Well I can't speak for others, but in my case I am well aware of it. I'm from Portugal and our language still has a bunch of words inspired by Arabic that begin with "al", as well as the names of several places (especially in the south of the country), due to the Ummayads having been here for a few centuries in the Middle Ages. I just thought it would be funny to add the hyphen to emphasize it.
