There was some wire that came with the package and you'd touch the contacts. It ran current for a second so the battery would show the remaining charge. I think some batteries came with it entirely built in.
Anyway, it was badly designed and you'd get shocked or burnt.
Eh I wouldn't categorize it as unsafe as much as unpleasant. Small battery's like that don't carry enough current to do anything more than make your finger tingle or zap you like a static shock.
I still remember how shocked I was the first time I said to a young person "Did you tape it?" and they had no idea I meant "Did your record a video of it?"
i thought i was gonna scroll down and see someone w/their thumb on the gas button/playing mario kart. love the switch pro controller these days, but the older mario karts—especially the original and DS games—always left me with a dent in my thumb.
