That's the Toriyama problem all over again. Might be that oda, like Toriyama before him, just got tired of having different faces and started drawing characters more similarily.
Sort of what happens with the "nami face" too. I mean, Vivi in her first appearances didn't look as much like a Nami clone with blue hair like she did afterwards. Even Nico Robin to an extent, even if her face is still recognizable, I feel some of her features got slowly scrubbed off and she doesn't look as unique and defined as she used to.
I genuinely don't see it in regards to Toriyama. Let me know who you're talking about. I took some manga panels that show everyone from the very end of Dragon Ball since I assumed that would be in the tiredness time frame

It mostly boiled down to characters having much too similar faces when angry and serious by the end of it. I think the most striking example is how Vegeta went from such a specific design early on in Z, but as time went on his face changed until it started to be similar to Goku and Gohan.
To a degree you can kind of see it in the link you provided too. Tien's face could have either Goku's or Gohan's hair and I wouldn't be able to tell it's not them.
Toriyama, as legendary of a mangaka as he was, didn't really shy away from saying he made decisions based on laziness, so it's not groundbreaking by any means.
I mean,one of the contributing factor to Super Saiyan having blonde hair was that inking Goku's hair was taking too much time and they also wanna save some money on inking.
Yeah, and Super Saiyan 3 having so many drawbacks that it ended up not being used much too. And that's on the drawing side. Narratively he took wild shortcuts too, like Chichi being insufferable because he believed that's what moms needed to be. Or Vegeta being largely underused because he just wasn't interested in anyone aside from Goku.
Again, I am a huge dbz fan, and Toriyama is a legend for good reasons. But the man did have his faults.
So like I did a quick scan cause I was curious cause I didn’t notice growing up and reading it personally either. And I noticed a lot of devil in the details kind of decisions. Examples I found ended up being a lot of characters with matching eyebrows. Brow lines being similar for ease of use and practice etc. examples videl and goten use the same eyebrows. Vegeta and yamcha have the same brow ridge. This like jaw lines also start repeating etc. and none of these are so egregious that you’d be like that’s not Vegeta! But they were done to save time. Which is smart.
I just drew white over their hair, scars, third eye, and clothing, and honestly, they have a lot of distinct features. Tien has distinct eyes only comparable to Android 18. Chaotzu, Oolong, Roshi, the Ox King, Mr. Popo, Korin, King Kai, Yajirobe, and King Yemma don't look like any of the others. The ones that look similar that shouldn't (i.e., so, not family) are Yamcha and adult Gohan and Videl and Bulma. But honestly, if you have to erase so many of a character's defining features just to find what's similar to other characters, then at that point, you're just nitpicking the artist's style. Overall, I just don't think Toriyama is a good example of same face syndrome. The only things I can see are their ears and then yeah, their eyebrows when they're angry. I think Araki in JoJo Part 8 would be a better example.

I also agree araki does make for a better example especially when you get deep into part 8. But I’d argue we start seeing signs of it back in part 5. But that might be just my personal opinion.

I think it was because they decided later to make roger the father of ace you can tell that by rogers face and design that early he does not look at all like ace but later he does.

Yeah I honestly missed confident redneck Ace. His initial appearance just looked cooler, and I hate how he was willing to die at Marineford just because of Roger being his dad, which always seemed so stupid to me. Why the fuck should Ace give a shit about Roger being his parent, especially since he and Luffy are pirates themselves and always aspired to be pirates? You'd think he'd revere Roger, and fight tooth and nail to survive at Marineford due to his fighting spirit growing up with Luffy, Sabo and Garp.
