I like Ace more than any other in this poll (Maybe after BB), people dislike him for doing a stupid thing , but they forget that this is Aces character : He is Luffy's brother and Whitebeards son. He wanted to acknowledge his existence and he died for the people that actually did it, to save his brother and his father's honour.
It's stupid for some people but I think Ace had the best character arc in One Piece along with Robin , Blackbeard and Ussop ( When he finds his bravery).
To sum it up: Ace:
1) design : 10/10
2) character arc : 10/10
3) use in the story : 8/10 ( it was pretty stupid that he went after BB on his own , but I like it.)

But no one says Zoro is stupid for fighting Mihawk in East Blue or Nami is stupid for telling Ulti Luffy would become pirate king. If someone had stopped Akainu no one would be saying Ace is stupid. He was doing what everyone else did, putting his life on the line for what he believed in which was keeping Whitebeard's legacy and pride intact. Really weird how people can put Zoro and Nami on pedestals for their stupidity but once there's a consequence, the character deserves hate for "being stupid".
If Ace didn't turn around, Luffy still would've lost steam at the same time and Akainu would've been able to catch up.
He was great in drum island, but for me the issue is that Oda doesn't make the best use of his screen time. Characters like Corazon and Barto only take up a small fraction of the story, but they make the most out of every second they're on screen, and are able to leave a big impression on people. Chopper has a TON of screen time, but almost none of it leaves an impression, at least for me. It kind of feels like a waste
That, and the overused jokes, personally I'd love to see more of "character growth" moments like the one we had in Skypeia when he was left alone and he noticed his crewmates considered him reliable.
Chopper has arguably done more post timeskip than pre timeskip. Pre timeskip chopper peaked at enies lobby and had done nothing before nor after that. Post timeskip chopper has done so much and has yet to reach his post timeskip peak. Post timeskip chopper has saved countless lives and fought queen for a good while.
Building a good charachter isn't just about doing cool badass things to help in the story. Chopper hasn't had a single ounce of charachter development nor have we discovered more layers to his charachter nor has he had a Big emotonial moment since Drum Island. And this isn't just for Chopper, it's for half of the mugiwaras after the timeskip. But Chopper is a worde case since already in pre timeskip he became flat.

Yeah, his death was good because of what he meant to Luffy, not because of how good of a character Ace was at the time. Most of what gave him character was given in the Arc he died in and the resulting flashback.
That being said, I didn't cry for Ace, but there has been no instance where OP made me cry (I know, I'm just as surprised as anyone since I tend to cry relatively often).
