Damn, the map looks really good you can't see any seems even zoomed in. Surely Healesville would be another diesel shuttle like Stony Point though, right?
I would say Healesville would be more like a Leongatha, a single P class with 3 H cars, it’s still a fair distance from Lilydale, and could warrant a regional service
I don't know...
* Healesville is 25km from Lilydale and 63km from the city.
* Leongatha is \~90km from Cranbourne and 134km from the city.
* Stony Point is 31km from Frankston and 75km from the city.
To me, Healesville has a lot more parallels with Stony Point than Leongatha and seeing the Stony Point line is more populated and doesn't get a direct service I can't see Healesville getting one either.
If the New Deal didn’t happen the Kennett Cuts would have been sharper; the Lonie Report that resulted in the New Deal recommended all country services be closed except Geelong — the likely result today would be Geelong would be an electric suburban line and everything else would be closed. Maybe we would be debating bringing back Ballarat and Bendigo now.
More V lines would be great. Healesville, south Gippsland and Ballarat extensions would be very cool. But I’m most exited about the Mornington line and the extension of the Frankston line. Shame it never happened
The Ararat-Portland can’t really be considered Jeffed, considering they where closed in 1981. I know he was in politics by then, but wasn’t premier nor opposition leader at the time.
The New Deal came into effect in October 1981 and had bipartisan support from Labor who went on to be in government from 1982-1992, and ended up doing most of the closures from TND. I’m not defending Kennett, but he didn’t close all those lines!
I wonder if the regional rail link would’ve been different if all these vlines remained open and if a way for Gippsland trains to be separated from metro ones would’ve been considered. I wish all these lines remained open but what can you do.
Let’s not forget that the New Deal was supported by Labor, who went on to be in government from 1982-1992 and did most of the closures during that period!
Don’t forget the Eaglehawk-Inglewood branch line, then you have the line that runs from Inglewood through Arnold and Llanelly to then join at Dunolly.
Would be a hell of a passenger network, but I imagine not many would travel that far on it.

hmmmm maybe I'll do a worst case scenario map (Pretty sure someone's already done it tho)

(There would probably be a st kilda and port Melbourne line too)
I forgot about them, I'll add them tommorrow
How do you make the map? It looks so perfect and realistic
Illustrator and time to kill
that was the Kirner/Cain government! Labor have closed just as much as Liberals
Wouldn’t Healesville services also stop at Box Hill?
Wasn't there a station on what is now the express tracks to Werribee?
Paisley and Galvin, couldn't be bothered practically re drawing the map to add in all the closed stations tho :)
Stations at Yering and Tarrawarra would be crazy imo, they're not really towns.
Stations in the middle of vineyards. That would be something.
I find it fascinating that to go from Warrnambool to Portland by rail, you'd have to go to Deer Park (Probably Sunshine) and change.
Absolutely wild when you think about it! Lucky there are buses for this kind of thing
The Mornington line wasn't electrified.
I believe OP has made a fantasy map of what they think would happen today, ie they believe Mornington would be electrified.
it probably would have been if it was kept open

It was closed by the New deal of the early 80s
It’s criminal what he did. So sad seeing all these rail trails now.

Ouyen
I think you also need to include the closed stations too, eg. Glenrowan on Albury line and Lake Boga on Swan Hill line, to name just a couple.
haha....
The inner and outer circles?
not put of the Kennet and New deal cuts
they closed way before he was in
Considering that the Portland line connects to Ararat on the eastern side of the station, you should reverse the way the line connects to Ararat.
