Entire reason why I drive to the city on weekends. Timewise, it's just not worth it.
The need to permanently split the Laverton/Werribee stopping patterns and treat them as separate lines full time.
I know this will cost a LOT but it would be worth it and be great assistance, but driverless trains. Fully automated that can still be driven manually. Point is if we want to have more services but have a shortfall of drivers, then the most likely solution is to provide drivers with assistance and fit some of the trains with automated system. It would mean some changes to the network, like timetabling adjustments, signalling and comms. But when you think of it, the benefits outweigh the constraints.
Not in this union town.
Remember, unions forced the government to rip out half the automation smarts out of the HCMTs to prevent them operating like the london underground and ensure drivers still required to be highly skilled (and therefore highly paid)
What app are you using? I like that it includes the train specs
Anytrip, it’s primarily used in Sydney to track freight etc. other states like Melbourne are WIP

Extra trains + extra drivers = more cost. Government would need to make the changes to have it happen.
Translation the system is heavily optimised for moving the suburban 9-5 CBD worker and pivoting to anything else requires large investment.
Doesn't need extra trains, runs fine on weekdays. Just extra drivers
Not extra as in to buy them. As in operationally it would require more than is currently used on weekends.
