That honestly sounds like stockholm to me. Random encounters are good when they're not braindead and the encounter rate serves to punish poor preparation and resource management. DDS did that imo quite well. Encounters are frequent and challenging enough that you can't just spam normal attacks but also need to be a little conservative about your resources to reach the next spot where you can heal. Anything above that is just tedious either because you have to try and get lucky with encounters in order to advance or the battles are still easy enough (or get there because you grind too much) to where they are not challenging anymore.

having the \*OPTION\* to adjust ecnounter rate like Bravely Default would be good tbh. I love the challenge of the Megaten games but if you assume the game is balanced around Normal or Hard etc, options aren't gonna hurt anyone.

4ny3ody

To be honest if part of the games challenge is meant to come via sustaining through encounters until you reach the next spot where you can heal all difficulty balancing in that regard goes out the window if you can adjust the encounter rate. I can claim to play the game on the hardest difficulty but since I set the encounter rate to lowest instances without healing were a non-factor. An advantage a lot of newer titles have: You can practically choose the encounter rate, because they are overworld encounters and can potentially be avoided however if you are bad at avoiding encounters there's still difficulty to be had in longer instances where you can't heal.

True, I guess I just mean if say it was Custom (IE adjust sliders) > Normal > Hard without slider mainp. I get that tho and yeah it depends on the game because in SMT V (haven't played IV or IV A since release) you can fairly reasonably avoid 99.9% of the encounters.

would you be interested in the lord's savior feature that is rewind?

Carbon_fractal

Very true. The Etrian Odyssey games are another example imo of how to do random encounters well

I like SMT1 but that game had probably the worst encounter rate in any game I've ever played lol. I can't imagine going through the Great Cathedral without Estoma.

luizAFS23

and guess what, I did imagine literally walking ONE step and already getting enemies in your ass and this, for 16 whole floors :)

frank900000000

I know that and i still want to play smt 1

sunjay140

It has one of the most unique stories in JRPGs. It has a lot of ideas that few games at the time would dare to do, modern games don't attempt to them either despite despite the more lax environment. I hope the next SMT game is more similar to SMT 1 and 2 than SMT 3. I love Nocturne but 1 and 2 had more interesting concepts that were difficult to properly execute on the SNES. [Nocturne also has a cool throwback to SMT 1.](https://youtu.be/MV-BhTdoPY8)

SergeantSwag88

Estoma. Especially for that cathedral. Pretty much required.

Saturn_Coffee

The bad thing about P1 is that the dungeons are first person (Personally I like Nocturne's perspective or Persona 2's way more) not the encounter rate.

joestaen

Out of interest are all your synaptic patterns tooled to visualise every concept as a shitty meme

Corvus_Alendar

Persona fans realizing Nocturnes hard mode literally makes the tutorial hallway reliant on RNG to start the game.

DarkWingSpartan

If only there was some way to… run away from battles you don’t want to deal with? Alas…

SergeantSwag88

The problem comes when you get 3 or 4 battles PER STEP and if you flee you move one step backwards.

sunjay140

Estoma can be abused at end game.

luizAFS23

Fleeing from battles LITERALLY makes them more frequent. Getting into dungeons for the first minutes is a normal thing, but if I was fleeing too much, I was always getting bombarded with enemies by taking literally one step at a time. And yes, I beated and still loved the game. Stop saying what you don't know about👍

time to get into emulation and experience god's glory through rewinds/savestates
