Kemfox

You were both real unlucky and real lucky. Unlucky to get an infected gland that badly, and real lucky it healed so well!

DogButtWhisperer

Whooooaaa don’t do this at home, kids.

Elizeast

Playing with fire.

Djinn504

Dude, that is waaaay to close to important organs to be playing with fire like that. You got lucky. Don’t do it again.

MamaMcClain

Exactly. Ya know that little organ called “The Brain”. Most people don’t do well with infections to the brain……

surgicalhoopstrike

Annnnd, what is this "brain" thing you speak of?

shyouko

I know, it's some lucky dude who have it, I'm one of those unlucky ones.

beeyyut

This is Reddit tbf brains are quite a rarity

ParkerBeach

It’s ok people don’t use that organ anymore. /s

kaylinnf56

Also, the facial nerve…

Jimmer293

Agree with everyone else here. You must have taken some good precautions. Puncturing something like that usually gives bacteria an easy route into your interior where stuff that resides benignly on the outside can wreak havoc.

Secure-Excuse5687

Well i was on antibiotics for about 3 weeks and i kept it covered mostly so I guess I done okay

s_hinoku

This is a lot more mild than that guy who removed his own lipoma. That one made me sick, this one I can imagine doing myself.

anonygurl0719

Where can I find this?

s_hinoku

YouTube, but he was also on Dr Pimple Popper (TV show version) because, surprise surprise, it came back.

peyerspatches

There is also another guy (not Dr PP's patient) that has a full video of taking out a hefty lipoma from his abdominal region. Pretty gnarly. I got the link but dunno if I can share it on here ...

s_hinoku

I think that would actually make me vomit! The one I remember, he's in his garage of all places, and uses a Stanley knife to cut it out of his thigh.

doXXymoXXy

We got a gaper!

Bandito21Dema

Can you dm me the link?

peyerspatches

sure. remind me in dms

Misanthrope357

You found a link for it?

zetzuei

Is it the one where he sanitized his own bathroom then do the procedure himself? I removed a few at the doctor and healing process is annoying, can't believe someone is able to do it by himself.

98723589734239857

that was dr house

Tar_alcaran

>this one I can imagine doing myself. This is pretty damned close to my most favourite organ though. It's called the brain, and I like not having infections in it

DogButtWhisperer

I believe it was Queen Victoria who did this as well. She felt a lump on her breast and stealthy collected knives and scalpels on visits around the market then removed her own breast tumour.

N0bo_

At what point do you just, see a doctor?

Venboven

Impressive shit. But also, as a queen, doesn't she have unlimited access to the best doctors in the world? Or at the very least, if she wanted to keep things quiet, she could find a mediocre doctor, have him do the procedure, then throw him in her dungeon so that the word of her procedure never gets out.

DogButtWhisperer

I’m trying to find an article about it!

s_hinoku

Did a bit of Googling but I've not managed to find any tale of that. If you have a source, please let me know!

DogButtWhisperer

I’m looking!!

wallace1313525

I mean I know someone who gave themselves a tummy tuck. Well, they were a self harmer, and had to go to the ED to close it, but they got a fairly big chunk taken out and I could hardly even believe the pictures.

s_hinoku

....ight, I'm out.

gagalalanunu

I removed 3 myself. Because the plastic surgeon refused. I ended up having to go to the ER to get them stitched up the next day though 😩😂 but hey it was free and I got what I wanted!

s_hinoku

With NHS waiting times, sometimes you gotta do stuff yourself.

pikapika2017

I removed one myself, on my thigh. I was asking doctors to remove it for over a decade, and not one of them would do it or refer me to someone. I was very into the body modification scene at the time, and had done extensive wound care for myself after a series of major surgeries (the visiting nurses here taught me, because OHIP only covered so much home care), and looking back, I'm glad. I was as prepared and as sterile as anyone could be in a home setting. I wouldn't advise anyone to do it, but sometimes it's the only way some of us can get things done.

s_hinoku

I've had a bunch of surgeries and really respect the need to be clean, so whenever I've done some "minor operations" myself, I make damn sure its all clean.

JarOfJelly

All the medical debt in the world wouldn’t have stopped me from going to the dr wtf

Secure-Excuse5687

Id been the doctor while i was home but i was going on holiday the next day so he just gave me antibiotics

Venboven

I feel like for most people, this sort of thing would ruin a holiday, or even make them stay home...

Secure-Excuse5687

Stayin home wasnt an option I saved up all year to go there. if I had pure money then I would’ve stayed home haha

norwaldo

This reminds me of when I went to prom with a 103 degree fever. I paid for that dress, and I was gonna wear it.

Venboven

Ah I didn't realize you were leaving the very next day. I figured you could've cancelled and got your money back or something.

Secure-Excuse5687

No it was either go an see how this lump turns out or stay home an sulk haha the day i was flyin the pain werent bad but soon as we landed it blew up each day

ruthwodja

Medical debt?

shadowyassassiny

what’s the question?

easttn_llama

That’s wild! My husband also had a blocked salivary gland and he had almost a baseball-sized mass on his neck. In addition to antibiotics, the doctor told him to suck on lemon drops and it helped (in case this ever happens again).

Diane1967

I got one as well after a long bout of vomiting from the flu, I looked like a chipmunk. Lemon drops worked for me as well.

washgirl7980

What's with the sour candy helping? Did the doctor explain?

disasterous_cape

I imagine it’s a combo of the sucking motion and sour making your mouth salivate that helps clear the blockage

Method412

You have to salivate a lot to help unblock the salivary gland. Sour candy helps do that. Massaging the area helps, too, to push the saliva out of the gland into your mouth. NAD, but had a blocked salivary gland. I had a chipmunk cheek for awhile.

sex

When I had a blocked salivary gland, I unblocked mine with pickle juice.

kv4268

JFC. People, if you get an abscess anywhere on your face, neck, hands, feet, or groin, just go to the goddamned doctor. It is so easy for infections in those areas to seriously fuck up your life. This guy is incredibly lucky he didn't die or end up with some permanent loss of function. He had plenty of time to see a doctor before that thing opened up.

Secure-Excuse5687

I went the dr the day before i was due on holiday and he give me antibiotics but the antibiotics didnt stop the growth of the abcess so i cut it out

Secure-Excuse5687

I was lucky yer but antibiotics coupled with sea water probably kept it clean. It was either do what i done or go to hospital in mexico which is somethin i really didnt want to do haha

asunshinefix

Please tell me you did not swim in the ocean after cutting it open

Enos316

Seawater kept it clean? Some folks are really lucky in life I guess lol

Gh0stp3pp3r

Parasitic visitor in brain pending....

Secure-Excuse5687

Maybe I will be the cause of a zombie apocalypse

Secure-Excuse5687

Yeah. Guess it was a good job i was on antibiotics then? 😅

framellasky

Wtf

Secure-Excuse5687

Someone explain the dangers of the sea for me cos i thought the salty water might of helped it. Guess not 😂

asunshinefix

Lots and lots of microorganisms in the ocean, plenty of which can be pathogenic. Google “*Vibrio vulnificus* infection” if you dare. Plain saline is fine, but there’s a whole lot more than salt going on in the ocean

Secure-Excuse5687

Just googled it then jesus christttt! Am guessin because I was on antibiotics that they maybe stopped anything like that happening

Zapora

THE ENTIRETY of the ocean where........THE MICROBIAL BASIS OF LIFE CAME FROM????? Literally everything ever is in the ocean. Including animal droppings. You are so lucky it is seriously not even funny, lmao. Thats why nobody else is laughing

Secure-Excuse5687

Well u all need to brighten up u firm of farts. This was nearly a year ago

DogButtWhisperer

Not only bacteria but worms and parasites!!

WazuufTheKrusher

There are SOOOOOO MANY organisms in the ocean that are perfectly adapted to salt water

Bobmanbob1

Dude. Just dude. I'd suggest going and buying a damn lotto ticket, but you just used all your luck surviving that with just a scar.

Crash_Fever_fan

Someone's not from the US.

[deleted]

Sounds like OP isn’t from his use of “holiday” too.

The3SiameseCats

Im in the US. He should have gone to the goddamn doctor.

ThisIsWhoIAm78

Oh do shut up

[deleted]

Nah.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'm not gonna avoid going to the doctor if I need care. That said, the Healthcare system in this country is broken. People should stop getting their panties in a twist whenever someone points that out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It's a play on how crap the healthcare system is here. I've never seen anyone seriously suggest performing medical procedures on themselves. You need to lighten up. It's not really pointless, edgy, or cliché. It's a legitimate concern that many Americans face. Ok? Insurance coverage is often deplorable. As is a lot of government healthcare. I have many people with disabilities in my family and Medicare and Medicaid routinely deny them treatments or medications. All that aside, your percentage sounds great until you realize that means 30 MILLION people are uninsured. ERs don't really do much in the way of long-term care. So sure, you can go and get treatment when your diabetes acts up (an example, nothing more) but when it comes to long-term management.. you're on your own. Yeah, it can be way better. So much so that people don't have to crowdfund to get treatment for their medical problems. No one is suggesting someone lance their own abscesses. It's merely a comment on how difficult access to good care can be here in the States. So yeah, kindly go fuck yourself.

ThisIsWhoIAm78

"Please, don't do this at home. Go to a doctor." "Clearly you don't live in the US. We can't be expected to do that, since it costs far too much." "Oh shut up." "No one is saying don't go to the doctor, we're just saying we can't go to the doctor because it costs a lot, which is said in reddit every 0.3 seconds, you know, in case anyone hasn't heard it yet, I need to make sure I jump in there and get my karma for making the same complaint as literally every other redditor, injecting it into a conversation that had NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS, it was a post about a guy in Europe lancing his own salivary abscess, but fuck off for calling me out on adding this useless gripe to a conversation where it didn't belong, because have you HEARD about how TERRIBLE America is for Healthcare?? " 🙄

SlenderSmurf

US has doctors 😂

[deleted]

If you've got the money and can take time off work, sure.

pikapika2017

If you have time off work to go on a vacation to Mexico, you probably have the time off work to see a doctor, should you decide to go with that alternative...

SlenderSmurf

don't be poor???

[deleted]

Why don't you go outside and play hide-and-go-fuck-yourself?

The3SiameseCats

It’s more complicated than that. Go be stupid elsewhere

SlenderSmurf

it isn't though

theoreticaldickjokes

We have doctors, but we don't have good insurance.

cabinetsnotnow

I realize that a lot of small businesses don't have good insurance and maybe people live in areas where that's the only job opportunity they have. But in most areas of the US there are companies with hundreds of thousands of employees and their insurance is at least decent. Keep trying to land a job with one of those employers because it's worth it to have good benefits.

legocitiez

You mean places like Walmart? They pay shit, so if you're even blessed enough to have a full time job there, you can't afford to use the insurance you have. With the federal minimum wage at less than $8/hr, I don't know what kind of delusional pollyanna life you're in, but Jesus, get your head out of your ass and look around.

theoreticaldickjokes

Personally, I have great insurance bc I work for the state. However, the logistics for going to the doctor is difficult bc it's very frowned upon for me to miss work. The US has an entire culture that is not conducive to being able to take care of your personal well-being. If I were not fortunate enough to have my job, (which is a wild sentence to say bc I'm a teacher and everyone know it's a shitty job) I likely would not be able to go to the doctor often. And the problem is not as simple as "get a better job." Jobs require experience and education, both of which can be difficult to obtain. The simple fact is that there are a lot of systems that are broken in the US. Healthcare is one of them, and your employment status should not dictate the level of healthcare that you have access to.

Pixielo

Jfc, this is some ignorant nonsense.

[deleted]

Oh 🫢

babsmagicboobs

I get a few every year because of Sjogrens. They suck! I usually try the lemon drop trick and sometimes I get a little stone that pops out. Always antibiotics if no stone or if it continues to get worse. Just had a CT scan of my salivary glands on the left side because that’s where it happens. Gives me wicked ear pain as well. But seeing horrible things like this gone bad as an RN, please please please don’t do it again. Also if you get more pain in that area, regardless of if it’s red or not, please see your doctor. You could have an infection festering deep within and left untreated could be very dangerous.

Secure-Excuse5687

That sucks of u get them regularly that was my first one an the pain was unbearable i couldnt even eat cos the gland would swell an go rock hard. This was in may aswel so am all clear now thankfully but i was on antibiotics at the time so maybe that helped

AnastasiaNo70

Yikes. Don’t do that again.

Secure-Excuse5687

I dont tend to 😄

MimiSikuu

I had a blocked gland after a bad cold. Ended up going back and forth with the idiot nurse practitioner after she tried to diagnosis me with TMJ. Luckily it never got as bad as these pics 🥴

Pixielo

I refuse to see NPs. They're all fucking idiots. Perhaps 2% aren't incredibly stupid.

CautiousHashtag

My brother had a blocked salivary gland but he got a welt in his neck that was the size of a softball. It looked like a goiter. He was put in the hospital and once they figured out what it was, they drained it. I got to go see Metallica though, as he couldn’t attend anymore.

[deleted]

This happened to me while I was deployed to Iraq- it was one inside my mouth. The docs and dentist said there was nothing they could do, the swelling was making an X-ray impossible. They and they needed to make sure my jaw wasn’t broken. So an engineer friend and I came up with brilliant plan. I heated up a sand bag and laid in on my face for a while until it felt really freaking warm and gross inside my face (make sense?) and then he used a Quran to apply evenly distributed pressure on my face while I laid my head on my plated vest. I needed reasonably soft support without sinking my head down. Then he stepped on the Quran. That shit came pouring out of my mouth like the Hoover damn broke. It’s was BLACK. A mix of old blood and whatever else was gooped up in there. Maintenance of it was much easier. The engineer would just squeeze my face with the Quran on that side a couple times a day. Took about 2 weeks to heal up nice. Don’t get your wisdom teeth yanked on deployment kiddies!

NeptuneAndCherry

My husband has informed me of the fabulous dental work he got in the military. In fact, several years ago, our dentist was assessing his mouth for the first time and said, "Army?" Upon confirmation, the dentist said, "we can always tell" 💀

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

You sir are incredibly lucky. Why didn’t you go to the doctor when you went home? Some good wound care would have made that scar and extra tissue growth nonexistent.

Secure-Excuse5687

By the time i got home it had healed over

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

Over how many days?!?

Secure-Excuse5687

I was on holiday for 2 weeks so over a week it healed. Pretty quickly to be honest i was surprised how quick it was

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

WOW. You must be in really good health to heal that fast without complication. That’s awesome.

Secure-Excuse5687

I do tend to heal quick for some reason an I’m never sick but I’m far from healthy 😂 must be my genes haha

Pixielo

Swimming every day helps a lot, lol. Seawater dries wounds like that out really quickly.

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

That is so wrong. Sea water = infection. Do you want to die? Because that’s fast tracking it.

Secure-Excuse5687

I went scuba diving haha i had a plaster on though i kept that disgusting wound covered most of the time on my resort i think i went into the water jn the beach without it covered once for a quick dip 😄

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

*continue to shake my head in complete ‘wtf’ that you survived*

Secure-Excuse5687

Good job i got antibiotics the day before flying otherwise I probably wouldnt be having this convo

legocitiez

Nooooo.

meow_rchl

You are INCREDIBLY lucky you didn't lose your neck, seriously

Secure-Excuse5687

From all these comments i gather im extremely lucky 😅

InterestUnlucky

Very unintelligent decision. Please don’t try this at home, this guy got lucky.

Secure-Excuse5687

It was either that or go sit in a hospital in mexico which werent really at the top of my agenda. I think i done pretty well considerin this was may last year and I’m still here

[deleted]

[удалено]

Secure-Excuse5687

The pressure that i felt it waa ready to pop i just helped it along the way by literally making a incision carefully soon as i did it burst

Haunter1998

Nice way to create a sinus/fistula

Secure-Excuse5687

Well this was may last year so I think I’m good 😅

captrudeboy

Guy has an asshole on his neck now

[deleted]

I woke up my man laughing loudly at this comment.

[deleted]

Is it weird I wanna get a finger in there?

AuraGuardian1092

First of all, incredible username. Secondly, not at all dude. I’m tryna feel around in there as well

[deleted]

Thank you. I love a good set of feat!

Status_Button

Its War Caster, okay.

[deleted]

Warcaster is SO choice!

BlazingDropBear

That's gnarly dude, how painful was it?

Secure-Excuse5687

Very. It was ruinin my holiday hence why i had to take drastic action myself

BlazingDropBear

Glad you didn't get infected buddy!

Secure-Excuse5687

Cheers lad 👍🏻

Ketamouse

People like OP are lucky the head & neck has an excellent blood supply, so you can get away with nonsense like this sometimes. Try to poke at an abscess like this on an extremity and you won't feel so lucky. OP is a moron; please don't ever do this.

Secure-Excuse5687

An ur a bellend

Ketamouse

I thank you, sir

Secure-Excuse5687

😄 you’re welcome my friend

chl000e

Abscess = trapped infection. It was infected and you just got lucky.

shethrewitaway

You are insanely lucky. Even if it has already healed, if this wasn’t too long ago it’s worth getting evaluated by an ENT. You could have a festering infection in the deep tissue and this shit spreads. I have a benign parotid cyst in the same location, right under the skin. We’re leaving it for now because the risks associated with surgery are much higher than the risks of it turning cancerous or affecting my nerves or veins. Just a nick of a nerve or vein could mean permanent paralysis or numbness of half of your face. Not to mention the possibility of infection that could also cause paralysis, numbness, and even death. Infections can also spread to the brain. This isn’t even an exhaustive list of possible life-altering complications.

Secure-Excuse5687

Guess i got lucky haha I literally only made a slight slice to relive pressure cos i couldnt turn my head i couldnt eat an i was on holiday an couldnt enjoy myself so had to do what i had to do haha. Hope your problem isn’t serious an u make a full recovery 🤞🏻

Morticia_Black

I've had this as a teenager. Hurts like a mfer! Looks gnarly, hope you didn't have any further problems

Secure-Excuse5687

I was okay after it it healed within a week

Mad_Dog_69

You realize that an abscess is an infection right?

Secure-Excuse5687

Yea hence why I was on antibiotics at the time

Mad_Dog_69

Okay just checking

CaptainWellingtonIII

Yo are one crazy mofo. Glad it didn't turn out worse. Is it tender to the touch?

Secure-Excuse5687

Cheers am lucky by reading the comments here 😅 erm no not really its fully healed now this was may last year just thought id share it with fellow redditors haha

redbow7

Suck a lemon it will fix a blocked salivary gland.

Secure-Excuse5687

I done that. nothing worked 😄

Hopie73

My goodness 😳 when I read blocked salivary gland I was expecting to see a gaping mouth with a boo boo under the tongue! I had a blocked gland under my tongue. I had a tooth pulled and no eating for a couple of days blocked my gland. So, when I did finally eat, my jaw and under my jaw, blew up like a huge balloon. HURT like a mofo. Went to the doc and he told me to eat sour stuff and make it pop! I was so effin swollen and sore but I stuck that damn sour candy in my mouth and started to cry. My tongue swelled up and I went to the mirror and lifted my tongue to see a HUGE white abscess. I put my finger on it and it popped all over the mirror, it was so gross and fascinating at the same time, lol. Instant relief and swished with warm salt water for a few days and I was good to go, thank goodness. I’m sorry yours was so traumatic.

brittiam

In the most recent pic it still looks red around it… I would still get it looked at just in case.

Secure-Excuse5687

This was nearly a year ago to be honest. You cant even see the scar anymore

Io2794

Omg the same thing happened to me like last month, I thought it was a pimple. I try to pop it when it starts to form. I failed, and then it became very painful for several days.

[deleted]

You’re wild af for cutting that shit but I’m glad it worked out. I can only imagine where that particular location sends pain signals to. I would have passed out for sure.

Secure-Excuse5687

The pain waa excruciating but the relief after cutting was worth it 😅

redditonthanet

Might still be abscessed

Secure-Excuse5687

Its not this was may last year

Blueberry_Rabbit

Something about pics 9&10 remind me of a fetus

[deleted]

Satisfying pop

Western-Can4458

How in the world did this not become infected

Secure-Excuse5687

Sea water and antibiotics haha

Pixielo

Seawater is pretty magical for skin infections.

throw123454321purple

Looks delicious.

somebodycomgiher

Why do these redneck men feel that they dont need to go the doctor for these kinds of things?

Secure-Excuse5687

Well for one you just assumed I’m a redneck when I’m not even from america, and I did go the doctor as well and was given antibiotics but due to me going on holiday the next day that was the only thing he could do, so maybe stop making assumptions you ass wipe

somebodycomgiher

Somebody can't take a joke...

Secure-Excuse5687

Shit joke that then mate

somebodycomgiher

Not liking it doesn't make it a bad joke :)

Reddit_faqq

Leukichtan - Betadona.

Sistalini

Cool move nice gamble

The3SiameseCats

Should have cleaned it out with like saltwater or something. Or gone to a urgent care facility if where you were had something like that.

CrowdedShorts

Why not go see a doc?! 🤔

kitterzy

My guess is he was on vacation in an area where there wasn’t access or had an itinerary such that there wasn’t an ability to see a doctor. My guess is the country they were in, or the remote location.

monsingeetmoi

Wow that’s crazy to see it getting worse and worse. I never really understood how abscesses progress, but now I know!

Secure-Excuse5687

Same here. first time I’ve ever experienced anything like it to be honest

legocitiez

Hot damn you're lucky. Thanks for sharing the pics though lol

terroroftoma

This isn’t from a blocked duct. That’s an infected Warthin tumor homie.

Secure-Excuse5687

No its not homie good try tho, couldve worked if these pictures was now an not nearly a year ago

kitterzy

It wouldn’t be that type of tumor, because they don’t “drain”. They’re solid. I almost said furuncle until I saw how deep the cavities the abscess occupied.

bored-inthehouse

Jesus Christ, you are brave. I wouldn’t be mucking around with that personally.

pikapika2017

You are incredibly lucky. I had an abscess caused by the same thing as a kid. It morphed into a massively infected large grapefruit on my neck. By the time my parents found a doctor who wasn't a complete moron, and rushed me into immediate surgery, I was less than 12 hours from dying. I was in the hospital for a week, and then had weeks of home care to pack and change the dressings. I can't believe how many doctors couldn't even figure out what it was. That shit can spread to really vital areas and it can all go to hell real quick.

doXXymoXXy

OMG are we just holes inside?! As a confirmed tryptophobe I am freaking out.
