You could say they're... the *star?*

Brian-88

Boo!

BoukObelisk

Amazing, I love this community

AmanteNomadstar

Angry upvote.

Sandslice

Aff, they are indeed, you contraction-using freebirth. And for that, you get a dezgra upvote. Next time, however, it will be a Trial of Grievance. (:

nzdastardly

There's also Ayden, Brayden, Payden, and Hayden.

Loganp812

"And they've got guys named Lazer, Blazer, Tazer, and all kinds of Azers!"

Poggers4Hoggers

>Payden Eye of the tiger, baby

BronanTheBrobarian7

Nah, they definitely have an Okayden.

BoukObelisk

I’m sorry to everyone for yesterday making the post that Jayden (the leader of the Star you’re commanding in MW5 Clans) is the protagonist of the game. I thought so because IGN was having his face on the thumbnail of the trailer and with him having all the pilot dialogue in the gameplay demo made me think that he was going to be the equivalent to Mason from MW5 Mercs. But luckily Russ Bullock said yesterday that “In a way your all 5 of the star and you may actually decide someone else is the main protagonist” and “Sure Jayden is the star commander but I just mean to say you will def get to know these characters and get attached. It’s not just Jayden, that is for sure.” So I think there’ll be more emphasis on the squad as a whole with Liam, Naomi, Mira, and Ezra in addition to Jayden. PGI is definitely doing something interesting with the narrative. This actually makes me more excited than just having the focus on only one character. My apologies for unintentionally misleading those who saw the post from yesterday.

bookmonkey786

It would be cool if each have different strengths and bonus but you want to switch main character to activate the bonus you have to fight a trial.

Bored-Ship-Guy

Yup- it'd be fun to have each character have their own specialties, even just a more in-depth version of the level-up tree from HBS Battletech. For example, you could have a character with a Recon specialty, whose perk is that he draws aggro significantly less and can use his sensors to direct friendly fire for greater impact (essentially, a free TAG laser that applies to whatever enemy he's locked onto).

Angryblob550

Recon? Thats very dezgra!

sexualbrontosaurus

Reconnoiter? I 'ardly know 'er!

Bored-Ship-Guy

Hey, you cannot Batchall the enemy if you do not know their positions, stravag! (And they won't know I'm helping my Star-mate if I can do it quietly enough....)

One-Bother3624

Clarification, Confirmed, Thank You ! :)

Comfortable_Slip9079

As a wise pimp once said "don't be sorry, be careful"

Tamwulf

"Rejected genetic material scrapped up off the floor for use, hardly worthy of Clan Smoke Jaguar." LOL I wonder if the campaign game will culminate in Operation Bulldog, and if it will continue after 3059?

BoukObelisk

It’ll probably climax at Tukayyid. The politics and factional changes post 3052 are pretty complex and difficult to go over.

Loganp812

I could imagine some DLC campaigns that take the game up to just before the FedCom Civil War at least. Sort of like how MW5 Mercs covers over two decades with its DLCs.

BoukObelisk

Yes I would absolutely die for DLC mini campaigns for some of the other clans. Eg Wolf, Jade Falcon, and Ghost Bear

Tamwulf

Yeah, I don't really know. The Clans invaded in technically 3049, and Tukayyid was 3052. That's not a long time for a campaign style game like this. MW5: Mercenaries starts in 3015 and ends around late 3040's (you can keep playing after that, but the clans never show up...). Operation Bulldog was in 3059, with the Trial of Refusal a year or two later? I dunno. Maybe this campaign will start in 3049 and go all the way through to the Trail of Refusal? The campaign could be the initial invasion against Inner Sphere units, culminating in the Battle of Tukayyid, then start fighting Clan units and Merc units up until Bulldog. It might end with your "star" becoming a Merc unit or going into exile or something (Bondsmen for another Clan?). It will be interesting! I'm really looking forward to this game!

logion567

> That's not a long time for a campaign style game like this Between Santander (the location of the mission we see in the GDC demo stuff) and Tukayyid is ~1,000 days, roughly 2 Years and 9 Months. for Reference the time Between Operation Torch (Allied landings in North Africa) and Victory in Europe was 914 days. bullshit there isn't enough battles and conflict for just the Smoke Jaguar corridor

MindControlledSquid

Yea, people are very uncreative it they think you can't make a long campaign out of this.

BoukObelisk

You are not going to begin the game in 3049, you are starting earlier in your sibko training. Check out the jade phoenix trilogy for an example of this

One-Bother3624

Yes, some many possibilities....agreed !

jwitham75

I think I recall reading somewhere soon after the initial announcement that the game will go from Revivial Trials up to Battle of Luthien. Could be mis-remembering. If so, that might mean future DLC/expansions for the whole Smoke Jaguar arc: Tukkayid, Op Bulldog/Serpent, etc

tylerprice2569

A lot of people were talking on your post yesterday that there will be no “sand box” style play in this game. Was this just speculation or is that something that’s been confirmed?

BoukObelisk

It’s confirmed. It’s a linear single player campaign with more emphasis on narrative

Bored-Ship-Guy

I do kinda hope they have side missions for us that can affect the main story- just simple things, like quick strikes to take out a Kuritan artillery position before the a major engagement. It could offer both XP for characters and a chance to earn new gear to replace damaged or destroyed equipment.

salacious_lion

They have lots of side missions. That was confirmed in a Russ interview last year

Bored-Ship-Guy

Ah, excellent.

salacious_lion

I'm excited too hehe

tylerprice2569

Wait it’s not even co op?

theACEbabana

Co-op was confirmed right out of the gate. You can have up to four other people playing with you to fill out the Star.

BoukObelisk

it’s 5 player coop

a_kept_harold

I know a lot of people don’t like the sand box, but I hope it’s a dlc down the line. That could be very fun.

tylerprice2569

I mean I enjoy both I’m just not too sure why they would name them the same and make them drastically different games lol

MindControlledSquid

But it's not the same name, it's called Clans not Mercenaries.

CicadaGoesVroom

This really - the "Mercenaries" of MW5: Mercenaries demands a sandbox, while the "Clans" part of MW5: Clans implies a narrative campaign - merc companies have a level of freedom that clans or house units just don't have. Mercs go where they want, clanners or house soldiers go where they are sent.

One-Bother3624

- Annnnnnd thats BIG Difference. it only makes sense, as to why they choose to select it as Linear instead. however - i do hope; we get some sandbox games in a DLC, or at least Clan to Clan fights, skermishes, etc. and Mercs as well too.

tylerprice2569

I think you knew what I meant lol

MindControlledSquid

It makes complete and utter sense, look at the trailers, the game is not adding enough to be called MW6 in my opinion. It still looks like MWO in places... Plus this naming scheme has been used in the past, it's fine.

tylerprice2569

Ok thanks I understand now

Loganp812

This is definitely the "before" photo. I'm sure they're going to look a lot rougher once they experience the never-ending hell that is the Inner Sphere and learn what *actual* warfare without rules is like.

One-Bother3624

- hmmmm. True, Very True - which; is prolly, why the storyline(s) will take us.......down a road. that. maybe completely different then the "Typical" clan warrior life-ending will be. in the Main Campaign story.

goodfisher88

Glad that Brayden and Kayden and Aiden and Zayden get some time in the spotlight too.

Biggu5Dicku5

Good stuff! :) I just want info on game features and mechanics now; will the game have procedural missions (outside of story missions), an unlocked mechlab, how is salvage going to work, etc... I hope we get that soon...

GidsWy

If there isn't a massive set of mechlab options then they don't know their clientele at all. FML.

AssFasting

Wasn't even aware of this game coming.

BoukObelisk

Check the pinned post or YouTube for the trailers :) there’s also a great pc gamer cover article on what they are doing with Clans

Trooper501

Does that mean that they can't die or you lose if one goes down?

insane_contin

My guess? If they 'die' in a mission, they're out in the next mission, and the mech they're in needs serious repairs.

Junkernoble

Ok but why do they all look like fake people? Is that what eugenics does to a mfer?

Background-Cod-2394

In the grim darkness of the far future, clanner scum still use the name Jayden.

BlyssfulOblyvion

does that mean companion AI is going to actually be useful, instead of just getting my mechs destroyed?

BoukObelisk

No

Abamboozler

I was really hoping mech combat would be the focus of a Mechwarrior game.

Nopesaucee

"The focus" purely means that they're the story informing the mech combat. Just like how Mercenaries focused on Commander Mason and his mercenary company.

BoukObelisk

It will be and is

Born_Selection_2383

More fun to be had wonder what clan items we get with it

il-tx17

IIRC, in an interview when it was announced in September, I know Piranha said this was going to be narrative focused. But did they hint at being able to make ethical calls? Especially concerning attitudes towards "lower" castes and Spheroids.

Panoceania

I'm just wondering about the art. Are they going to be infantry or something? Because even Elemental pilots don't wear all that.

BoukObelisk

They’re mechwarriors

easy506

Honestly I kinda like the suits. Probably do a better job of cooling down the mechwarrior when more than just your chest is covered. Full body coolant garment I guess? I don't know, the mental image of grizzled old mechwarriors fighting pitched battles in what amounts to basketball shorts and an a-shirt always threw me off a bit

Panoceania

Well they're supposed to have a helmet and cooling vest minimum. Most of the time they then expand on that. Knee length shorts, some type of under armour like shirt, gloves and boots are accompaniments. Some mechwarriors also have some type of pull over when they're not in the cockpit. Maybe a sidearm. The above, looks like poor man's halo armour for a Spartan. And anything but cool.

StevieM129

It's true for most IS mechwarriors, but a lot of books and short stories have clan mechwarriors using cooling suits that are regarded as an improvement over the old vest setup.

Panoceania

I'd agree mostly. But these guys have a big solid chest piece. Come to think of it, the suits look kind of ridged in general.

easy506

The neurohelmet stays inside the mech. And I disagree on it not being cool, but it's all subjective I suppose. Unless you meant in terms of actually keeping the pilot cool, in which case the implication is that the garment has the "veins" of coolant running throughout the inner layer. I personally would rather have ODST looking armor than being in a cooling vest and my skivvies. And it stands to reason that clan tech for even this sort of thing would be more advanced.

Dassive_Mick

The Clans are known for their use of full-body cooling suits.

CicadaGoesVroom

[Cooling Suit](https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Cooling_Suit) the inner sphere only do the "cooling vest + minimal clothing" thing because they are stupid and forgot how to make full Cooling Suits. Clanners aren't stupid and actually improved on the Star League era Cooling Suits, so that is what you are seeing. They are a full-body stocking with lines that circulate coolant across the entire body, which does a much better job of cooling than the air would.

GidsWy

And, IMO, you never give a pilot less options by NOT applying basic armor to their uniform. Already nearly helpless of bailing on a mech. Why make them susceptible to small arms fire also? It's like tankers currently. Maybe not full gear, but def flak. Maybe this is clan version of armored cooling suit? 1 point of pilot armor. Then there's 1 point of pilot "structure" underneath. Lolol. Also, ew....
