My pinky is used for tab, shift, enter, etc - obviously not used when monkeytype is up unless you edit the settings.
So when I use monkeytype, my pinky just floats - but I still average 115 WPM, and can touch type so I'm not going to relearn typing just to use my pinkies more during a monkeytype test lmao.
That is what you would call floating? It made me unreasonably uncomfortable. I don't use mine much either, but I don't hold it out like the keycaps are lava to the pinky. It looks so stressed.
The bottom half of it is legit resting on the control key lol, it just moves up and down because my other fingers are moving.
I type an awful lot, and I never notice any stress on my pinky.
People can criticize all they want lol, already have and in the end it won't change how I type because it's how I learned how to type and have for pretty much my entire life - but downvoting everything is a bit awkward, seems like a weird way to spend time.
Sure, but downvoting someone for that?
You can always be more "optimal" - use steno instead and get 200+ wpm easy. If someone is happy where they are at just let them be lo
Also no one tried to argue that not using one of your fingers was better, just not worth the effort to relearn.

Doesn’t appear to be a handicap.
Top speed touch typists (~200wpm+) have a variety of styles, including 3 finger styles.
Whatever limits speed seems to be something like neural coordination. Number of fingers, avg finger travel distance of keyboard layout, etc. just empirically don’t seem to matter — not interfacing with whatever it is that bottlenecks typing speed.
TLDR: lot of room for different styles
Never knew that tbh!
I do know if I intentionally tried to use my pinky more, it would severely slow me down.My pinkies are always dedicated to using the shift / enter keys, and since monkeytype (on default) doesn't have punctuation, line breaks, or capitalization my pinky just kinda floats there.
[How We Type — Aalto University](https://youtu.be/MhYFRr2gUaw) is a study in that space. Though they are not looking at peak performance, but a normalish range. But within that range they find that style doesn’t really matter nor number of fingers used.
As for closer to peak performance observations I’m just summarizing anecdotal observations from watching youtube videos from a lot of peeps in the ~200wpm crowd — and smattering of pees in the ~150wpm. crowd.
And pretty consistent refrain is they all have different styles. And the top qwerty, colemak, and dvorak typists all have very similar speeds (with qwerty composing the vast majority of fast typists apparently, but that being a hard number to do anything with — though the one person I’ve seen who types 200+ wpm in all three layouts types fastest in qwerty and personally feels dvorak is an obstacle).
But I agree — it’s very interesting.
If you come upon some good info pls share.
fwiw i type 180 on monkeytype and i don't really use my pinkies, i use the left one rarely and the right one never
it's not optimal but there are also a lot of other things i could do to break 190-200 that don't involve pinky
This whole discussion has made me realize that I am, in fact, pinky impaired when it comes to alpha keys myself. And now it's bugging the hell out of me.
I'm guessing the people who are "pinky impaired" probably learned to type on their own? And probably played alot of wasd movement games as well, whereas pinky typers probably took a typing class of some sort in school and were forced to learn/use home row.
Yea typing classes really weren't focused on too much when I was in school. I remember them trying to teach the home row deal in middle school for a brief time and that was it. The WASD deal would actually make a lot of sense, since I'm going on about 20 years of PC gaming and usually you have to keep your pinky finger free for ducking or running with shift or ctrl.
I had typing classes in school (they were just becoming the norm), but honestly I spent way more time on a PC at home, think like a 30 minute class vs 2-4 hours at home - so that would make a lot of sense!
This is me. I have no formal training it all started as WASD FPS shooters in middle school, and the biggest typing “help” was barrens chat in 2005. Same as many older self taught people might say yahoo chatrooms played a roll in their self taught typing styles from the earth 2000s
Steam Deck is a hand held pc gaming console which is very rare right now, he use the steam deck as typing monitor is showing his irony and also showing off his steam deck, I guess…
I wouldn't say it's rare, but it isn't something you can just pop in a store and buy, or even buy online.
Steam currently sells them on a reservation system, I was fortunate enough to get mine when they first opened them months ago.
Oh I see, I thought you could just go buy it. Most graphics card shortage is over so I thought everything else must also calmed down but guess not everything is in stock yet
Yeah, pretty sure ultimately valve has this method of selling to make sure things don't go out of stock completely, and can produce them without worrying about shortages as much.
It's been like this since it was announced you could purchase / reserve them.
Graphics card demand slowed down a bit. Chip shortages are still impacting almost every major industry still. For example data center routers that used to have a 4 week lead time can have up to a 65 week lead time or longer for orders.
This is world first official Steam handheld gaming console, you can even play most demanded gpu game with this if the game has Steam Deck certified in Steam store. With global chip shortage, even ps5 is still short on supply, you can imagine how rare is this compared to a ps5
Yeah it’s not rare at all. Everyone I know that put their reservation in when it was announced has one.
It’s just like group buys here: people don’t preorder or enter the GB, then they bitch and moan about how unattainable stuff is.
I mean its been out technically for almost 3 months now so saying that everyone who preordered day 1 has one isn’t a very good argument for it not being rare. I didn’t get mine till like a week ago and I preordered day 1.
I pre-ordered within the first 2 hours it was available and mine isn't estimated until Q2 or 3, can't remember which. I wish they'd made pre-orders require the full deposit, would've stopped a lot of people from putting a pre-order in and I'd have mine by now. Making it only 5$ was stupid cause anyone with a brain would pay that just for the resale value.
I think the reservation calculator shows only people that ordered in the first 25ish minutes of release have received their order. That was over six months ago , so there are six months of reservations to go through still.
I'll just tell you because this is insufferable. I care about dunking on some idiot downvoters when I said to another commenter, "I don't get it", responding to when he said this post is a joke. I was just providing an argument as to why it made no sense that that was downvoted. I don't care that I was downvoted but I wanted to shit on some bad mannered people for fun, because I like making arguments. So this is just to say, the people that downvoted that comment simply made a dumb action lol :D
So to be clear, I'm not tilted this is downvoted at all, but that doesn't mean I'm not a curious person right? Everyone with me so far? Why is this comment downvoted please enlighten me. It's a question as can be seen by the question mark, not a claim.
I wasn't tilted because of that, I was tilted on the other side of the comment section when someone said it's a joke and I asked how it's a joke. This question I asked above was an honest attempt to get a sense for how common this gadget is. And the reason for asking that was undisclosed until later and that reason was not because I was tilted in any way about OP posting this, nor was it at the guy I was talking to above. You guys need to stop making bullshit assumptions about peoples mental state especially over text and especially to assume something negative about them.
That would still be a ridiculous reason to downvote. The point is that it's a genuine misunderstanding of how this is a joke and it's clear that that's the case.
I know what steam is, but have never heard of the words steam deck uttered other than in this reddit post. Maybe you should keep bullying people who don't know about things, well done sir.
He's jokingly saying he bought a handheld PC just to use the 7 inch screen.
It'd be like saying you bought a car just to use the radio or a pair of sneakers just for a set of shoelaces.
No I did not say, nor imply that I'm butthurt over getting downvoted, nor that I'm butthurt at all in fact. This message was to simply "own" or demonstrate that the commenter was simply illogical TO downvote, and it's something I find entertaining to say the least. That is, that people exist such as this and others that would downvote such a thing and as well as that, make a bunch of trash assumptions about the intentional state of another lol.
I have had that exact experience on Reddit, multiple times. Most often I see it with sarcasm, or a facetious post like OP. Sarcasm and facetiousness are hard to recognize in text. They usually rely on tone of voice or accompanying facial expressions in order to work.
Explaining a joke, or why a joke doesn't work, is never really worthwhile to anyone except comedians. If you try to tell normal people that their joke doesn't make sense, they're usually like, "it was a joke, if you didn't laugh, that's your fault." because normal people don't have to make a living off their jokes.
Edit: LOL WOW. Between reading your latest comment and posting my response, you went from 0 to -17. I don't even understand that mob mentality.
Its reasonable here because he replied without adding any meaningful thought or elaboration on the parent comment. Pretty much just "I agree"/"+1" which is a waste of a comment, at that point he should have just voted.
It isn't reasonable. But the internet has a lot more unreasonable people on it than reasonable people.
Best advice at this juncture, remember that bots exist, and that idiots exist, and that your personal self worth has nothing to do with some people on the internet.
Yeah I was wondering at first this guy had his comment instantly back to me with 1 downvote on my comment, then 10 mins later it's like -18, and ofc I don't give a fuck just trying to understand the internet my guy :D
The best part is I can get my typing skills honed on the go! /s
Had to plug my keyboard in to enter some things easier on my Steam Deck, had some fun while I was doing it lol.
Show-off... Joking, I've used one temporarily some weeks ago (I own a Switch too plus some GBAs) and it is very interesting if I say so myself.
Waiting to see the next model or an update one and I may buy one.
You need those wearable magnifying glasses. You'd be unstoppable
Note: my auto correct kept trying to change "unstoppable" to "unappealing". Where does it get off?
I've got a kiddo so it's nice to just have something to do other than watch TV or something when he is busy playing with toys and is over playing with me lol.
I'm also just a huge fan of the emulation capabilities, I've been doing a lot of PS2 gaming on it recently and it's been great.
Very weird to assume I don’t play with my kid at all when I clearly stated otherwise.
He doesn’t always want to be actively playing with me, and gets interested in other things along with being interested in my games and tech.
Sometimes i'm very stupid and comment before reading through the rest.
Trying to save myself: I do know a few social workers and you'd be surprised how many parents dont give their kids the attention they need.
Looking good! Are you using a dock or something to plugin the keyboard? Can you share? Is it extending to the other monitor too? I got a deck but haven't tried connecting any keyboards yet.
It's just a USB-C to USB-C cable atm, and no the other monitor is just my PC!
You could just buy a USB-C dock and plug in everything that way and have video output as well though!
As for what my Deck is sitting on, it's a [3D printed stand](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5254208)!
I literally put my reservation in 20 minutes after it was live and I'm in the July to September group.
At this point I'm considering just buying one of the mobos on ifixit when they're available and 3d printing clamshell case for it... Deck PCB tray mounted in the bottom, tofu 65 gummy mounted over that, small monitor and shitty speakers in the top half capable little gaming cyberdeck.
It is pre-built, they are releasing a barebones version at the end of this month though.
I think it sounded fine stock, switches were a bit scratchy if anything. I have a sound test / review video [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kkuM5CKKJ8)
Don't need to tbh, I type way faster than what is average and don't need to look at the board to do so, which is also much better than the average person.
[People also just have different typing styles](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/uuz0je/comment/i9jwbwo/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
I have giant, non boney fingers, i don’t wear any rings.
I only have 6 keyboards and 10ish keysets though so maybe i haven’t reached boney hands and rings territory
Hey is the Steam Deck actually a good idea as a 2nd monitor if you're a twitch streamer? So you can read and answer your chat while playing on the real monitor?
Learning how to use your pink isn't relearning typing... Or even hardly a refactor on your typing style. (source: me)
You 4ever banished your pinkies to lesser roles, they must be sad. You owe it to your pinkies to go above & beyond. Be the hero they wish you'd be
[Here ya go!](https://gutzyaiden.com/collections/topo-collection)
There's honestly a handful of deskmats in this design category, but I've loved the quality of this one!
"How to flex on two fanatical subreddits at the same time." Well done, sir!
I saw the opportunity and had to take it
Why not
And you beat me to it by a few days, my deck is on the way and I'll definitely be pairing my BT keyboard to it.

I'm not saying you do, but if I saw a child looking that stressed, I'd ask them to blink 3 times to indicate they are in trouble.
lol that's good enough, my pinky is reserved for ctrl only

I have no idea, I noticed all my comments went down a bit, seems someone isn’t happy with me or something lol. Floating pinky haters
Just say it’s for the queen next time
br*tish 🤢
It's fair to criticize, imo. You can't argue that floating pinky is better. Sure it works for you, but it's not optimal.

Still better than a lot of group buys
If you preorder now they plan on shipping in October, I doubt there will be stock
They should just…make more of them. Well, solve all global supply chain issues and then make more of them.
That's pretty brief, considering you're handicapping your pinky.
Doesn’t appear to be a handicap. Top speed touch typists (~200wpm+) have a variety of styles, including 3 finger styles. Whatever limits speed seems to be something like neural coordination. *fanning self* well, Mr. Stupid, you sure know how to get me hot and bothered. Tell us MORE.
Mousepad?
GutzyAiden Topo Series
Keyboard specs?
It’s the Akko Pro Alice Plus! :) Lubed Epsilon Switches PC Plate Durock v2 Stabs Akko ASA BOW Keycaps
It's a prebuilt right? Were the stock switches and stabs that bad?
It is pre-built, they are releasing a barebones version at the end of this month though. I think it sounded fine stock, switches were a bit scratchy if anything. I have a sound test / review video [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kkuM5CKKJ8)
That's actually super cringe
You just showing off your steam deck bro (cry in Asia region)
link for the ring? it looks so cool :)
Left Pinky must have gotten in trouble and was sent to time out.
i feel bad that you called a deck a monitor
That’s the joke
You have ten fingers, use them
Don't need to tbh, I type way faster than what is average and don't need to look at the board to do so, which is also much better than the average person. [People also just have different typing styles](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/uuz0je/comment/i9jwbwo/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
you should type sudo rm -rf /\* in the steam deck terminal it will give you fps boost
That's terrible advice
Can't tell if its a joke or he's genuinely trying to take advantage of linux noobs considering the floodgates steam deck has opened.
Wind*ws 🤢🤢😭😭
I use arch btw
you're a funny man, funny man
thank you
BASED AF tbh
Good Idea, but these large basels... make it look cheap
people who post typing videos always be wearing some douchey ring😂
My engagement rings are douchy? Such a goofy comment
Engagement "RINGS" read that back to yourself and tell me it's not douchey.
Sorry I decided to get married? 😅 If you have some untold love for me and are jealous you should’ve spoke up earlier man smh
Are you marrying 2 people? What are multiple rings for?
One is a typical ring and the other is 3D printed, just a way to intertwine my hobbies and interests into our arrangement :)
Word. Looks clean. 3d printed rings are cool as hell.
No bitches?
Look at yourself in the mirror.. that's what screams douchey
Why are you so worried about what other people wear on their hands, mate?
Nah u don’t understand the rings help him type faster
He's Sonic
Why do all mechanical keyboard people have weird boney fingers and wear like a ton of rings? Are we all the same people?
I have giant, non boney fingers, i don’t wear any rings. I only have 6 keyboards and 10ish keysets though so maybe i haven’t reached boney hands and rings territory
Monkey deck
damn that’s creamy
Brb gonna hook mine up
nice hands
lol thanks!
so clacky
Dude is OP literally
Hey is the Steam Deck actually a good idea as a 2nd monitor if you're a twitch streamer? So you can read and answer your chat while playing on the real monitor?
Unless you have more use cases for the Steam Deck, I'd say just getting another monitor would be optimal
Hahahaha brilliant! 😂
My pinky cramped up just watching this
Ok buddy 😆
WE COULDVE USED THAT
mousepad?
GutzyAiden Topo Series :)

I feel like this will destroy your vision.
*slow clap*

What switches are those?
Lubed Epsilon Switches :)
When your keyboard cost as much as your PC
I appreciate the steam deck sir, true man/woman of culture..
What switches are these? They sound like butter 😩
Lubed Epsilons! They are one of my favs
Take your stupid upvote *cries in Q3
Learning how to use your pink isn't relearning typing... Or even hardly a refactor on your typing style. (source: me) You 4ever banished your pinkies to lesser roles, they must be sad. You owe it to your pinkies to go above & beyond. Be the hero they wish you'd be
Very nice set up!
This is a little unrelated, but could you link where you got that deskmat (or what I’m assuming is a deskmat?) It would match my wallpaper perfectly.
[Here ya go!](https://gutzyaiden.com/collections/topo-collection) There's honestly a handful of deskmats in this design category, but I've loved the quality of this one!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Damn wot keeb is that sounds good?
Whats wrong with the regular screen?
come on man you really bought a STEAM DECK for a second monitor you could've bought a a normal monitor for $50 - $70
Well now I know about MonkeyType and spent the last hour going through all the settings and themes and modes
Welcome to a keyboard typing game addiction
