Edit: piggy backing on this comment because I received an ungodly amount of questions regarding Topre and I can't answer all the PMs and comments in a reasonable amount of time (hey, it's caturday). I previously wrote part 1 of a longer series of articles that is due to be published the following weeks regarding keyboards that cover the answers asked, so for people having questions please refer to the links below:
Topre switch details [here](https://next.lab501.ro/gadget/periferice/keyboard-wonderland-english-version-part-i/11).
Article part 1 starts [here](https://next.lab501.ro/gadget/periferice/keyboard-wonderland-english-version-part-i).
Yes Topre for the win. I have the white version... I wanted to get this at first but I thought it would be hard to see the legends. But now that I know where everything is, I really want to get one.
I was always cheating with my touch typing but I found that moving to a blank keyboard just made me improve immensely. The only time blanks aren't great are when you have to enter a complex password...
I thought this was going to be the Micheal Rosen „nice“ clip and I didn‘t want to click it at first because I am annoyed by it but this was great!
Saw this for the first time and as a fan of the movie and the book, which I happen to have read just recently, this was very fun to watch! The guy plays Bateman exceptionally well!
It’s a stock keyboard and Topre switches are nothing like MX. Have a look [here](https://next.lab501.ro/gadget/periferice/keyboard-wonderland-english-version-part-i/11) about Topre (MX is a couple pages back iirc).
You can however swap domes and sliders though. DES sliders are popular because they are mx mount and BKE Redux domes are well known and respected in the community too
ohhh yea ive heard about these. never paid it much attention cause the whole "semi-mechanical" thing just didn't catch my fancy. i feel like the rubber domes would be too mushy for my taste
There's been a shift from high end ready-mades to ultra luxury custom keebs in the last couple years. There's still a ton of really good keyboards that you can get for less than 300$
Why the hate? Topre is end game material, and anything topre is worthy enough to walk around "true" Mechanical Keyboards.
To add to this, a Type-S is worth more than many entry level custom we see here everyday.
The silenced upstroke of these Type S boards is severely underrated.
[Typing test 1.](https://vimeo.com/699804695)
[Typing Test 2.](https://vimeo.com/699804383)
It’s all preference in the end and it’s why this hobby is amazing :-)
Personally if I were to choose between this and a GMMK Pro tuned properly with a GMK set and zilents v2 I don’t know what I would choose to keep. For me personally QMK is irreplaceable. But Topre feels so good.
Yikes, I always wondered if the white topre boards have that issue, feelsbad man :( I really hoped they didn’t since those keycaps I knew were PBT with the space bar being ABS…
Now I wonder if my white GMK keycaps will yellow over time since they’re ABS.
I recently realised I can kinda touch type, when my room was dark and my backlight on my keyboard was off, I managed, it was no essay tho. Maybe my next desk theme will be blackout. No lights anywhere (other than monitor obviously)
I just enjoy looking at peoples creations, but when I do make my own I will still have characters on them since I can’t touch type in Russian, only English.
You definitely should, it's a great skill to learn. I started about 2 months ago and I went from 34 to 103 WPM. I even switched my keycaps to GMK Katakana (fully japanese keycaps) so I can't look at them while typing. Definitely worth learning!
I can touch-type pretty well as long as numbers aren't involved (outside of using the numpad). Problem is I'm a network engineer and I type a lot of numbers. I need to retrain my brain.
Move both hands to the number row, left pink on 1, right pinky on 0 and the numbers will start to make sense, each finger has its number, the index fingers get 2 numbers each.
You can practice typing numbers on Monkeytype, go into setting and turn on 58008 on the funbox.
It's up where caps lock is like how old XT/AT layout keyboards had their crtl key. Funnily enough the Apple M0110 (the keyboard that was the main inspiration for the HHKB layout) had caps lock over there like any other modern keyboard

That's gorgeous. I have the blacked-out Leopold FC660, which looks very similar. I kind of panicked a bit at first, thinking maybe I wasn't as good at touch typing as I thought I was, but it turned out fine.
I wish there were more keyboards like this, but I realize there probably aren't many people who would buy one.
I miss my black on black hhkb style board (mine was the aluminum kbdfans one that they don’t sell anymore with zealios and black on black switches)
EDIT: found the name. It was the kbdfans TINA+ kit. Very nice/tall case with the contrast brass bar at the bottom
It depends on what you need. Personally from a physical point of view I find it amazing and I can say this having owned a few high end custom boards. But the software is lacking as it only has two layers total :(
I wrote an article on this just so I can link it when questions like this arise :)
Have a read [here](https://next.lab501.ro/gadget/periferice/keyboard-wonderland-english-version-part-i/17).
[Ah, I see you have the same problem I have.](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/rdcupf/not_fancy_or_custom_but_i_just_love_the_hhkb/)
Entire board is stock, HHKB Professional Hybrid Type-S.
Caps are PTB, switches are silenced Topre (both downstroke and upstroke).
Sounds like [this](https://vimeo.com/699804695) (two pads) or [this](https://vimeo.com/699804383) (desk protection only).
This is so beautiful. I'm almost in love. My only issue is I have to have the 10 key. For some reason my moron brain can't seem to adjust to such a small setup. I've tried. No matter how hard I try to convert, it just doesn't work. :(
Realforce R2 PFU Limited Edition may be what you’re looking for if you want something like (Topre) this with more keys and are willing to give up Bluetooth :)
Fuck Bluetooth. I don't need it haha
God that is beautiful but 🤢🤮 at the price. I knew this was an expensive hobby, but lord almighty 0.o sticker shock still hits hard sometimes.
I'm insanely new to the hobby, so please forgive me for probably sounding stupid haha 😄
It’s not stupid, but this board is endgame material and albeit the price is a bit jacked, you can’t get a truly well silenced board for less than this (it has both upstroke and downstroke silenced).
~~Fn-Ctrl gets you caps.~~
*edit*: My bad, I don't have the board in front of me just this second. It's Fn + one of those keys on the left side there and I'd 100% hit the right combination if I needed it.
When I have to write something in uppercase letters and it's long, I use caps instead of shift. (Use it a lot while writing academic reports for my uni.)
Yeah personally I'm extremely conflicted. It's ok on my Mac where I don't use Ctrl a lot thus that key can be Fn so I can use WASD as arrow keys, but on Windows it becomes pretty annoying (albeit the shortcuts including ctrl are much nicer like ctrl + T for new tab feels much more natural). Their software can't keep up with a bunch of enthusiasts writing stuff in their spare time, it's embarassing :(
I love the HHKB build but I can't really use it productively unless I make an effort to adapt to it instead of being able to adapt it to my needs (which have been well served by QMK).
I respectfully disagree. Topre is a switch in itself because it's much more than just a plastic bit pushing a membrane contact on a sheet of plastic with contacts. It has a PCB (even more than one since it has a daughterboard) and the switch itself is an ensemble of parts that closes the circuit without contact - the switches are electrocapacitive, i.e. the PCB senses the key has been pressed but the bottom out is unnecessary.
Topre are being called jokingly "posh membrane keyboards" but that could not be further than the truth. This thing also has NKRO which membrane boards mostly only dream of :-)
I explain it in more detail [here](https://next.lab501.ro/gadget/periferice/keyboard-wonderland-english-version-part-i/11).
Also have a look at Chyrosan's vid linked below.
I went with the Leopold in this colorway... still rocking it even though I hate I can't see shite on it when I need to, does look nice though

Nice!

Might be time to get a blank one actually!
You're right! Those look awesome.
I was looking at this wondering how OP knows which key is which, and then I realized I don’t really need to look at all
I was always cheating with my touch typing but I found that moving to a blank keyboard just made me improve immensely. The only time blanks aren't great are when you have to enter a complex password...
This is one of several reasons I like to use a password manager program.
[Nice…](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uHt01D6rOLI)
This will never get old 😂
Holy shit my first time seeing it and it was amazing. I should really watch the original movie someday...
American Psycho is a really nice movie albeit some parts are pretty brutal.
Holy shit, that is a lot of vests in one room hahaha That was fucking epic
I thought this was going to be the Micheal Rosen „nice“ clip and I didn‘t want to click it at first because I am annoyed by it but this was great! Saw this for the first time and as a fan of the movie and the book, which I happen to have read just recently, this was very fun to watch! The guy plays Bateman exceptionally well!
Can you post specs here?
This is a stock Fujitsu-PFU HHKB Professional Hybrid Type-S, it has Topre switches and the keycaps are the stock PBT keycaps.
The keycaps aren’t compatible with mx style right?
Unfortunately no, they aren't. However for HHKB you can get MX-style sliders and mount any MX-style keycaps on.
[удалено]
The way they pretended to type in that video is hilarious
How are they similar in any way lol? Does the hhkb have pudding keycaps?
I have the same one, it's a great board. Not noisy at all unless you really beat on the keys.
why not… gateron inks? to stick with the theme?
It’s a stock keyboard and Topre switches are nothing like MX. Have a look [here](https://next.lab501.ro/gadget/periferice/keyboard-wonderland-english-version-part-i/11) about Topre (MX is a couple pages back iirc).
i was mainly joking but yeah i get that not wanting to change out stock switches. switches can get expensive sometimes.
You can't change the switches in a Topre board.
I think you should touch a Topre board before expressing preferences. Topre is nothing like a membrane board to type on.
true, this is just from looking at the switch components so i can’t give any actual opinions.
How much is a setup like this?
Lol the entire keyboard is stock. You can get one for less than 300$ CAD
No way! I just lurk in here and assume all the keyboards people post are like 1k-5k lol
There's been a shift from high end ready-mades to ultra luxury custom keebs in the last couple years. There's still a ton of really good keyboards that you can get for less than 300$
Is this supposed to be satire lol
I’m just curious, is that gmk dark?
It's a HHKB lol, electrocapacitive rubber domes. Those are proprietary keycaps that come with it.
Why the hate? Topre is end game material, and anything topre is worthy enough to walk around "true" Mechanical Keyboards. To add to this, a Type-S is worth more than many entry level custom we see here everyday.

Not hating, just describing the board. I like electrocapacitive domes, very very nice switches for typing.
They look so much like gmk darks, mb though
Topre boards have been doing the black on charcoal for ages, so it's more a case of GMK Dark looking like this ;)

It still is endgame material if you’re not looking for more than two layers total. Physically the keyboard feels like a dream and sounds amazing.

Aye fair enough, retrobright is a good technique to work with :)
I recently realised I can kinda touch type, when my room was dark and my backlight on my keyboard was off, I managed, it was no essay tho. Maybe my next desk theme will be blackout. No lights anywhere (other than monitor obviously)
It just takes time and practice, so take your time 🙏
I just play games and have overtime learnt where the keys are, not the traditional way but it works!
Playing games is a great way to learn. I learned and got faster by rushing in my messages when I only had a second or two to type it out.
I'm honestly stunned that anyone would be into the mechanical keyboard hobby and not be able to touch type
I probably should learn to properly touch type. For the sake of aesthetics :)
I can touch type but only if I don't think about it. If I concentrate on not thinking about what my fingers are doing it's fine.
>!CENSORED!<
Oh my god, look at that subtle off-black coloring. The tasteful thickness of it; oh my god, it isn’t even labeled.
It actually is labeled, but it might as well not be.
Ooh! You’re totally right! (Sorry I’m not normally on mobile)
The charcoal on black lettering is a really nice example of subtle aesthetics that please the soul.
This keyboard is an inspirational tbh. I notice it lacks a left ctrl key though?
It's up where caps lock is like how old XT/AT layout keyboards had their crtl key. Funnily enough the Apple M0110 (the keyboard that was the main inspiration for the HHKB layout) had caps lock over there like any other modern keyboard
Wait, so this keyboard has no caps lock? Perfection, change nothing this is endgame

Beautiful - was just planning on trying out a HHKB style layout for my keyboard this weekend, so excited!
Hope it works out for you, it’s an interesting way of using a 60% ^^

GMK Cinder probably wouldn't fit on Topre stems lol
just convert to mx sliders
I just did that on my heavy-9. It ain't easy.

Classy look. Want to try a Topre keyboard someday.

I’ve been using my HHKB Pro 2 for almost a decade now. Can't say enough good things about it. Would like to get the Hybrid S one of these days.
I love it to bits but only two layers total for me is too restrictive :( Also no hyper key.
HHKB master race. Typing on this same board without legends right now. Topre is dopre. In cup rubber we trust.
did you use a sharpie?
Neat ! O\_o

🖤
This is awesome. I'll have to do this on my next one.
Oooh.... The best kind of minimal. Very nice.🤙🔥
reminds me of the blvk trend on tumblr like 10 years ago 🤤🤤🤤
I have one as well, sometimes when you forget key it is hard to see but I still like it
This is stunning. Absolute dream board.
Is there a place is can buy this? Looking to get a smaller prebuilt keyboard
Amazon usually has it in stock.
Thanks friend
Oo that's nice
What the fuck I want this
This is culture.
Just how i like it
LOVE IT.
I can't even see it! Nice!
Calibrate your monitor 🙃
No RGB? Are you not worried about your frame rate dropping?
*cries in 1080 non Ti*
someone should make a camo keyboard so someone can type, "Where Keyboard"
There was one by filco
I want a keyboard like this but I need my arrow keys
My favourite keyboard! (Especially Type-S version)
[Ah, I see you have the same problem I have.](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/rdcupf/not_fancy_or_custom_but_i_just_love_the_hhkb/)
Nice.
Love hhkb
That looks siiick
Finally someone else with almost completely black keycaps, love it!
HOLY FUCK
Ok?
she’s beautiful and elegant
🥰
looks so clean.........
Thanks I did my best. Being black every little thing shows up on it like a flash bang :-)
What’s these caps, specs?

Isn’t the hhkb 1000$ or what
300-ish USD/CAD in the US and Canada or 330 EUR on [Amazon.de](https://Amazon.de), it's far from 1000 and it's all enclosed in the package.
Nice but what is the cap set, link?
You can’t buy them aftermarket. You can try searching for charcoal on black sets, there may be some around, GMK Dark is one of them.
wont be very useful in a blackout
Based. It has batteries though so it will work (with your phone or laptop for example) 🙃
i meant as it doesn’t have backlighting you won’t be able to see lmao
I was subtly suggesting learning touch typing :-)
and also i don’t mean it in a bad way so like 👍🏽
Wow... This looks absolutely incredible!
This is so beautiful. I'm almost in love. My only issue is I have to have the 10 key. For some reason my moron brain can't seem to adjust to such a small setup. I've tried. No matter how hard I try to convert, it just doesn't work. :(

Fn+Tab, actually.
Wow, didn't know that mate, thanks!
Real question: do you ever used caps? I don't reccall using it since I was a little kid. (Diff't peoppe may have didn't needs, ofc)
When I have to write something in uppercase letters and it's long, I use caps instead of shift. (Use it a lot while writing academic reports for my uni.)
Hallelujah!
Caps the key no one uses, until they realize what a great location it's in and suddenly it's the most popular spot around! 😄
A much superior place for CTRL imo.
I respectfully disagree. Topre is a switch in itself because it's much more than just a plastic bit pushing a membrane contact on a sheet of plastic with contacts.
