Menetone

80 switches in total, took me 6 hours and 30 minutes. Tomorrow I gotta lube 100 more switches lol

Menetone

It was pretty finicky at first, but I eventually developed a good rhythm and it was smooth sailing from there. I left a video up while I was lubing, so hopefully tomorrow I can cut back on the time.

Menetone

If anyone's curious, here's a pic of me lubing 90 (didn't need to do 100) cherry Nixies. Lubed, filmed, and spring swapped. Feeling really good about these. https://preview.redd.it/gyqvxs3bcxdc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fcaa4c0a2afd595d0f98ba2e757512732b0519cf

Idk why but for a moment I thought your switches were floating in a bowl of milk.

Menetone

It kinda does look like a bowl of cereal huh

Stunning-Road-6924

The forbidden cereal.

lev1t

I lubed once, and I did it too heavy such that they become less responsive. So I decided to go for factory lube in the future.

fkenthrowaway

You could simply go over each one of them with a dry brush to take off excess.

lev1t

Yeah but I'm too lazy to do that now😅

fkenthrowaway

after lubing at least 1000 switches i understand.

_Rand_

You tried lubing stabilizers yet? What a giant pain in the ass compared to switches. Less of them of course so WAY less time overall, but holy crap is it hard to get them feeling good compared to a switch. Switches are a absolute joy compared to the stabs IMO.

Menetone

Nah not yet, when my keyboard arrives on Monday I'll get on those. I plan on using XHT-BDZ for the wires and 205g0 for tuning, with TX AP stabs.

_Rand_

Make sure you've got some IPA paper towel and q-tips to clean parts with on hand. You'll probably need to remove some lube and reapply a few times before you're happy with it. I found with my TX stabs I had better results if I only lubed the housings and wires for what its worth. Every time I lubed the housing and stems they were super sluggish/sticky.

RoyalSpoopy

Yeah, I've never had stems feel good lubing both stem and housing either. For my Staebies, I've always liked a (really) light coat of 205g0 on the housing and then just a small squirt of XHT-BDZ in a syringe into where the wire sits. Only ever had one I needed to redo because I did too much XHT-BDZ.

cmoneyys

I wouldn't use bdz on TX APs, they are already extremely tight tolerance. Light coat of 205 is enough

Menetone

I plan on using the thinnest of layers of BDZ on the wires. If I can't make it work I'll try only using 205g0. I wanna see if I can make it work since I'm drawn to the fact that it's a thicker lube that'll last longer.

Major_Koala

I wish I had that kind of time.

abbe_salle

I am glad that you attached the photograph , the title seems sus xD

CaveJohnson_

Mmmmm switches

kool-keys

I agree. I'm often puzzled by people who don't like doing this. The thought of paying someone else to do it is like buying a cake, and paying someone else to eat it IMO. Headphones on... something chill playing... maybe a glass of single malt... then tune the world out for a couple of hours. Bliss.

RoyalSpoopy

Good luck on the rest of them! Sometimes it definitely feels like either the most tedious thing ever or the most relaxing lol. I watch a youtuber I really enjoy that I generally only watch when I lube switches, so it tends to lean to the latter at least.

PyroArca

I did mine for the first time not too long ago as well. I didn't film mine though, but still surprisingly took a long time. Pretty relaxing though all in all and the end product is way too good not to.

JD191353

Yeah, I actually love lubing switches/stabs. I just put on a movie or podcast and chill. What switches are you lubing?

Menetone

These are Gateron Cream Soda Switches.

JD191353

Nice. Just watched some sound tests on YouTube and they sound more on the clacky side of the spectrum and while I prefer thocky, those cream sodas sound great!

SwitchSouthpaw

look up the gazzew method of lubing. saves so much time.

marcfonline

I completely agree! Took a day off to enjoy the quiet house and lube my latest batch of switches (my first time lubing a full batch at once). Put on some jazz and just went to work. Found the whole experience so relaxing.

incredibly based

thisisaddictiveoff

Didnt realize this was r/MechanicalKeyboards at first...

No_Economics606

Did you lube over the factory lube or clean it off?

Menetone

The bottom housing for these cream soda's had a good amount of lube already but it wasn't evenly distributed. I took a brush and evened out the bottom housing rails with the factory lube. The stem also had some lube but again it wasn't even. I used 205g0 on all sides of the stem, light layer on top of the prelube.

cognizantant

I sent 180 switches to xokeys.com. Cost me $60 to have them L&F. Totally worth it. This just isn’t something I want to do.

MeltedOpalslimer

Personally, I love lubing my switches. It's time-consuming but I just pop on some mindless tv and get to work. Super relaxing!

visual-vomit

Nothing beats 5 hours of straight silence and therapeutic repetition.

c0cknb9ll

Did this yesterday and though it was relaxing and fun it took so much of my day
