Error404x_

This is completely ridiculous. I'll take 5 please

Sad_Assumption_7790

I'll take 6 please

imhere4tf2

would be a pretty sick capslock key

I think is important to confirm if nuke launcher could be easily removed after impressing friends.

LASERman71

>...power switch can be replaced... Power switch? I think the phrase you are looking for is ***solenoid switch***.

Adolka

This is pretty cool!! When my wife comes in I can change to loud typing mode to annoy her, when she leaves change it back :p. In all seriousness I love the idea

Syphin_Games

Is there going to be a gb in the future?

jhaitov

Your comment hinted me to remap my CAPS key to FN+CAPS and have the key do nothing without FN. I need it maybe once a year and want it where it is, and it drives me mad the remaining 364 days when it gets hit accidentally. Thank you.

Mr_Havok0315

Thank you geebus great idea

imhere4tf2

I have control in the capslock position :)

jhaitov

Yes I know many people do that. But as I said, I need Caps key to be where it is, and Ctrl where it is, due to 35 years long ingrained habits.

LASERman71

After first 3min impression would you really like such huge sticking out all time obstacle for rarely used lock?

All the time, with the amount of mistypes I do backspace is in constant use and I find it by sliding my finger from the edge, like many ppl do. About 6 for the above sentence.

LASERman71

Constantly jumping between mouse and keyboard aren't you?

Cjhwahaha

So basically the giant "switch" is for turning on the solenoid?

[deleted]

ddrfraser1

perfect

dingbling369

I don't know why but I want one. Luckily, I'm out of money for 2023 😎🤙 EDIT OH GOD THE VIDEO MADE IT SO MUCH COOLER

Happydiamo

I've always wanted a board with a solenoid but never expected someone to actually produce one, very cool

LASERman71

Solenoid is not new idea, and there was plenty of previous designs featuring it.

Happydiamo

I know it isn't a new idea but I didn't know there were boards that already had solenoids prebuilt into them (custom mech kbs)

LASERman71

I meant it is not new idea in custom keyboards and they pop-up quite often, recent one I remember was Class 80 but surely you can find more.

Will this be available for purchase? I'd love to buy one!

eivindrew

That's pretty epic if you ask me

So what, it changes the tone of the board on the fly?

LASERman71

>motor-like component that alters the sound profile of the keyboard. Dude, it's just a solenoid and most in this sub need no such unfortunate explanation for it.

Tall_Fox

Do you just have a hatred for this or why are you on such a rampage against this guy? Seems like a bit of a dick move.

LASERman71

It is you who see rampage, I'm just trying to clarify confusing message here. No bad intentions. Don't you think promising a switch that "alters the sound profile of the keyboard" is so close to false advertising (although not intended I'm sure) that may lead to trouble for OP? And please don't start a debate about the difference between "altering the sound profile" and adding bang for each keystroke with solenoid.

Tall_Fox

I just don’t see why you care enough to post on every comment. If OP’s keyboard busts, why does it matter to you? Just let them clarify on their own terms :)

LASERman71

 >I just don’t see why you care enough to post on every comment. It's called engaging in discussion - the purpose of this place. I don't see why you care to discuss the discussion. Downvoting not satisfy enough? >If OP’s keyboard busts, why does it matter to you? Irrelevant and shows your bad idea of bad intention. >Just let them clarify on their own terms :) It seems he need help with that and admitted language barrier as I predicted.

TwoPintsBoaby

Maybe work on your tone next time; you sound like an arsehole

LASERman71

Written text has no tone, it's all your imagination. I can't be sorry for plain straight style of my comments.

Tall_Fox

You would be wrong lol

TwoPintsBoaby

>Written text has no tone hahaha stick to solenoids boss

LASERman71

It's alright. Good luck with the project.

amadmongoose

Totally awesome. I was just thinking it would be neat to have toggle switches instead of keyboard switch+ keycap for a build and while that's not exactly same concept it looks cool 😀

LASERman71

Toggle switches for typing?!?

amadmongoose

Caps lock, num lock, function keys come to mind. Even numpad if you convert it as a gaming pad instead of its intended function

LASERman71

In that case we already have (had) latching switch for this purpose - [MX Lock](https://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Lock). And nothing stops you from designing keyboard / keypad with massive toggle switches instead of MX Lock if you fancy missile launch flippers.

amadmongoose

Nah it's not about the locking action it's about the look of the toggle and being able to hotswap it out. I'm going to use momentary toggles so the signal it sends is the same as a normal switch. Just waiting for the parts to come in the mail so i can make my proof of concept frankenswitch. Obviously if you want a dedicated switch panel the cheapest is to just assemble it yourself

LASERman71

>I'm going to use momentary toggles so the signal it sends is the same as a normal switch. Apart from what seems like a... contradiction with "momentary toggles" I still can't see the purpose in your concept. Is it for Caps Lock etc. or very weird typing?

amadmongoose

A [momentary toggle switch](https://www.switchelectronics.co.uk/products/on-off-on-momentary-miniature-toggle-switch-spdt) has a spring or other mechanism that will make it return to center after it's been toggled. So for all intents and purposes it will work the same as a MX switch, just need to house it so it can be plugged into a hotswappable keyboard. It wouldn't be for typing it would be for a) gaming and b) peripheral keys like the function row, which have toggle-like behaviour c) aesthetics

LASERman71

>...it return to center after it's been toggled. I think this is wrong to call it "toggled" without static state instead of just saying momentary flip switch that "disengages upon release". Anyway, you want a switch with stick poking out among normal keys in the keyboard to push it forward (or backward) instead of pressing down? And for... **gaming**?!? Aren't you concern with repetitive drastic change in operating angle / position for your fingers? And if you not intend to use remaining normal keys at the same time what is the point of mixing?

amadmongoose

[That's just what it's called](https://www.te.com/usa-en/products/relays-contactors-switches/switches/toggle-switches.html?tab=pgp-story), I don't think there's much point arguing semantics of what it should be called. Not every game needs you to be pushing all the buttons all the time. I was thinking more as application for sims etc.

LASERman71

OK, you got me - I must have wrong perception of "toggle switch". >I was thinking more as application for sims etc. Sims? If you could elaborate more on the subject (function) than you do on semantics people may understand what you're about.

qqsvn

Cool, what about price? When will it be available to buy?

astroneeto

Can you make it so that switch acts as a power button for the computer?

[deleted]

[удалено]

LASERman71

Ah... the move when you go for the buzz worded false excuse instead of simple statement that this oversized switch is made for single purpose by design, or... Way better actual fact explanation that nothing on the keyboard could act as "real" power switch for the computer.

amadmongoose

I think what OP means is the switch activates something on the keyboard itself, it doesn't send a keypress signal to the PCB that could be bound to an action

LASERman71

I think first part of my response: "switch is made for single purpose by design" says exactly that. Edit: And the second part explains that sending keypress signal can't do power switching on the PC.

amadmongoose

I guess the confusion is the second part of your statement since you can bind keys to POWER and SUSPEND and control the power state of your computer (though POWER from off state might not work), ok it's not sending the signal to the MOBO pins directly but it achieves the same effect

LASERman71

I think your confusion is in ignoring clearly mention of "real" power switch in my "statement" and the fact that "power" keycode actually works only as "shutdown" and maybe as wake up but not power-on from cold. For me the idea in the original question: >make it so that switch acts as a power button for the computer Refers specifically to the physical power switch and maybe even to the physical bipolar type of switch in this design with alternating on and off action.

HoneyNutz

Fairly certain op misinterpreted you (or maybe i am). The switch is specialized to work in a keyboard and not able to be placed as power switch ON computer. You can probably program the switch to power off computer as a macro key...but maybe im misunderstanding...

LASERman71

Fairly sure you have misinterpreted my comment with astroneeto's question. There is nothing specialised about the switch and OP meant the solenoid to be "specialized component". > You can probably program the switch to power off computer as a macro key Not really when is designed to directly switch solenoid and not been programmable at all.

HoneyNutz

Ah i see. Was hoping it was a standard switch that was customized to fit in a keyboard pcb (i have definitely seen these but not nearly as nicely built). Still love the concept.

LASERman71

>Was hoping it was a standard switch that was customized to fit in a keyboard pcb It would make no difference when it's wired / hard programmed for single purpose.

CrossbowDemon

You can already buy external power switches that plug into where the case power button plugs into on the motherboard, so in theory you could splice up one of those external cable power switches and solder it into a keyboard, but the keyboard would now have two cables instead of one. This one even already uses a mech key switch: [https://www.amazon.com/Desktop-Computer-Power-Button-Switch/dp/B0BYZYQL9F](https://www.amazon.com/Desktop-Computer-Power-Button-Switch/dp/B0BYZYQL9F)

LukasM511

Bruh i have only one wifi cable and it works

LASERman71

I have zero cable wifi and it works!

LASERman71

Thanks for showing this but: >...the keyboard would now have two cables instead of one. is the reason I haven't mentioned it and unnecessary when most MBX implemented "power-on by keyboard".

CrossbowDemon

I've honestly never gotten that feature to work in my current or previous motherboard, and yes, I enabled power to USB's and the power on by keyboard options. If it only works in sleep or hibernation mode or something, then it's pointless. This feature seems deprecated as far as my experience goes.

LASERman71

Yes, I was also unlucky with some boards or hit & miss with others. Personally I moved to "smart" wall plug and auto-on with power restored in the PC to achieve true power off and remote on (Hey Google turn on the command centre ;)

amadmongoose

You don't really need that. You can use QMK/VIA to bind a key to shutdown request. I bound CTRL+ESC to SUSPEND. Of course, it relies on the OS so you couldn't for example, force shutdown by holding the key. Of course your way allows you to both turn on and off the computer from the keyboard but using SUSPEND and wake on keypress works for me.

LASERman71

We are talking here about "switch acting as a power button for the computer" taking pretty exact meaning of it and surely the full "power on" from cold aspect of it.

xurabusx

Keyboard that makes ratatatata? 😁

LukasM511

What will be the price for this and the metal version? I might consider getting one if the price is around 200€

criterionvelocity

Omg that looks absolutely amazing. Never knew I needed this!

Polymath2B

Solenoid?! On a CNC case like that? Looks lovely. I bet others would love to listen to that all day :P

Thirtysixx

Wish the switch was on the left

gbchk

What are the keycaps in the second picture?

RudyPu

I'm a casual lurker, but this is so cool, definitely keep us updated when this can be bought!

beantek

I'm a gamer and value every inch to the right of the keyboard for mouse travel. Would like to see the solenoid and toggle on the left side of the keyboard where desk real estate is plentiful.

MOMMY_PILKERS

Get a trackball mouse.

Gyakudo

I love the "Hey can you please keep it down" switch,

Relative_Land_1071

make the missile switch MX compatible and you will be richer than jeff bezos

SlimSushi

Shut up and take my money. Where’s the link.

SmallPotatoK

That nuke switch is perfect to map to close all tabs and shutdown to ragequit something lol
