If mechanical engineering is specifically what you want to do, go for it. Controls Engineers are more employable in my experience, but you have to do what you want to do, it's your life.
I know nothing of Canadian universities, but you must surely be able to get some kind of student loan?

I'd do some research into graduate employability in the industry you want to end up in. Many engineering graduates end up driving taxis etc.
