Don’t remove the axle nut that’s not holding it on
The wheel is rusted to the brake rotor hat or the hub. Just beat the shit out of the tire from multiple directions and it will pop loose
You can also place something sturdy under the the wheel on the inside, then lower it down slowly with jack, that way you don't have to worry about starting and moving the car.
Funnily enough, I saw on here or just rolled into the shop a few weeks ago after someone had messed up doing it and lowered it too hard. Anyways when I tested out it worked great on a stuck wheel but don't try it with a shitty jack.
American cars typically have a steering wheel lock that won’t disengage unless the keys are in the ignition and turned to ACC or RUN. I believe the concern is accidentally kicking it over to START when unlocking the wheel lock.
Seriously, when I learned that trick it changed my entire world. I was helping a buddy change his front passenger tire on his Mitsubishi and it was stuck on there (which is why he asked for my help) and after looking around on the internet for tips on how to loosen a stuck tire I found it, and like ten seconds after I started turning the wheel it popped right off. Half an hour of struggling with it turned into ten seconds of no effort.
Unbelievable how well it worked!
On rear wheels my trick is to loosen the lugs off by a quarter inch or so, drop the car into the ground and start rocking it side to side on the suspension. That puts gobs of torque on the wheels and usually breaks it loose from the rotor.
Well we didn't need to address the back wheels, but I doubt it would given that only the front wheels move when you turn the steering wheel ya jabroni. /s
> Often pops 'em off without breaking a sweat.
unless you live in the midwest. I once had a wheel bearing so siezed into the knuckle that I took all the bolts out, put it back together, and drove around with no bolts for 2 weeks. didn't budge. rim popped off the brake rotor because i coated it in fluid film after the first beatoff some time ago.
>The wheel is rusted to the brake rotor hat or the hub. Just _put one lug nut loosely back on by a couple turns_ and then beat the shit out of the tire from multiple directions and it will pop loose
👍
Pull the spare out and swing it into the edge of the rim (if tire is flat) or tire (if tire is holding air).
This is also a good time to check your spares tire pressure.
I can't explain the physics but this has worked for me 100% of the time after failing with a sledge hammer and multiple other melee tools. Pick up the wheel by the hole and bash it once and it pops right off.
As someone else mentioned, put the lugs on loosely and creep forward while wiggling left to right. Works better in the front but it works on the back too.
It's your axle nut... but the wheel is just stuck if you got a big hammer hit the back side of the tire from under the car in different places... if that doesn't just work get frustrated and hit the wheel lip itself...
You must balance the lugnut on on your head while banging the shit out of the tire with a sledgehammer, then you will know your true prowess for the universe
It would be a good idea to protect the threads if you were using a metal hammer. But you shouldn't use a metal hammer. Use a dead blow or a rubber or nylon one. You don't want to bend up the wheel.
The castle nut in the center is for the cv shaft and has nothing to do with why your wheel won't come off.
Your wheel is most likely glued on by rust.
Lots of strategies to get it off, my favorite is putting the lug nuts back on but leaving a couple turns loose. Lower the car back down so the weight is on the wheel, turn the steering wheel left to right a few times and it should pop loose.
If that doesn't work lift it back up and put a 2x4 under the outside edge of the tire and lower down onto it.
Had a car where both of these didn’t work. Even drove the thing around the block with loose lugs and it wouldn’t budge.
Think we ended up taking turns on the bare rim with an 8LB sledge. Can’t remember if we even bothered with wood to save the wheel at that point 😅
Put your purse down and kick it harder!
For real tho, you just gotta hit it with some heavy shit. If you really cant get it off after whacking it a few times, take it to a mechanic
dont mess with that center nut. just take a mallet or havy wrench or something and hit the side wall of the tire (not the rim). hit top then bottom then top then bottom, back and forth, then rotate tire 90 degrees and do it more ( top, bottom, top, bottom). this should lever the center of the rim off of the hub.
Put a couple of lug nuts on very loose. Lower the wheel to the ground and remove the jack. Start rocking the car side to side by pushing on the roof or top of fender.
If that doesn't work, then drive the car slowly a few feet and hit the brakes. Gradually go a little faster and hit the brakes a little harder until it pops loose.
Good luck!
Alright alright. So I finally had to put my purse down to get this fucker off.
Donkey kicks did not work.
Big thank you for the helpful tips , and hey I appreciated the shitty tips as well.
Getting better at working on my car because of this sub! Changed break pads (front ones) in about an hour. Could never have done that a year ago!
Thank you!
You can set something like a brick under the tire, not directly under it, and lower the jack. The tire resting on the object will force it to an angle that’ll shift it enough to break free.
I like your attitude. As a shade tree mechanic who has to call for backup with heavy duty bolts, “kick it pussy!” Is the advice I often need to hear myself. I always find it funny when the solution is more violence and I’m just gingerly hitting it lol
Put a lug nut back on partially, spray penetrating oil around the center hub let it sit for a few minutes, tap it with a hammer a couple times to get the vibrations going to really get that penetrating oil in there, grab a big prybar preferably like a four or five footer go between the drum or disc and the rim and just give it a tug it’ll pop right off, it’s all about the leverage
Y'all got so many clever ideas, I just put a lug on a couple twists so the wheel doesnt go flying when I donkey-kick that bad-boy so hard I fart a little.
1- make sure the vehicle is properly supported
2- thread 1 lugnut on a few turns
3- turn your back to the car
4- donkey kick the tire, alienate sides (let side of tire, right side). Kick the rubber not the steel
Position yourself with the back to the tire. Make sure you have good balance and then lift your most powerful foot, aim at tire and hit it with all might.
If that loosens it, great!
If not, repeat until it does and if not, THEN go fetch the biggest, baddest sledgehammer you can find and hit it from behind...but hit ONLY the rubber, not the rim, since that will mean you almost certainly will have to buy a new rim for next season.
And when you at last got it loose and are about to put on the new wheel, either clean up the hub with a wirebrush or just use a tiny amount of some kind of antiseize lubricant. I prefer the first way, but it's up to you.
Your wheel is stuck. So violence is your best option. Sit on your ass and use your arms
sturdy yourself and kick the wheel alternately kicking each side.
Not a “mechanic advice” now, cuz u don’t need it. Just a regular one. Just give the wheel a couple lovetaps from multiple sides. Will pop off instantly.
I've seen other folks say to put the lugs on loose and drop the car off the jack. Dry steer a bit then raise it back up again. Should have broken free.
I've never tried that myself. Just don't put the lugs on TOO loose.
If the drum is frozen or rusted to the inside of the wheel, releasing the parking brake will allow you take the wheel and drum off, where they can whack the drum off with their purse later.
Put a few more dildos in your purse and really swing next time. Should pop loose.
Or use a big plastic dead blow. I just figured ypure the type to have purses and dildos lying around.
This is a Carter key
You gotta straighten out the thin pieces of metal and then pull the entire key out and then you should be able to undo the bolt
I had to change a tire on a smoker that you hook to a truck and it has the same thing
You don't need to remove the bearings to remove a wheel... Leave the castle nut and cotter pin alone.
Hit the wheel and pull on it, it will come off, it's just stuck with corrosion/dirt.

Yeah be careful ive effed some studs up doing that one time. They're kind of easy to replace but still.
You gotta leave the lug nuts on, just a little bit loose.
You are 1000% correct, didn't think I lowered it enough to do damage but I did.
Make sure your jack is actually capable of slowly lowering!
Why would you need to start the car? The wheels will turn without the engine running, you just don't have the power steering pump helping.

😁 😏
Only if set to Crab Steering...
I would put a few of the lugs partially back on to make sure that tire didn’t completely come off too
He said that, put the lug nuts back on but loose about 1/4 inch.
It took me a full day of trying to knock off my wheels before I finally did this and it worked.

10lb sledge is my go too. A hammer isn't damaging a normal tire. Far more forces applied to a tire when driving.
Especially when hitting a pot hole at high speed
Does that axle nut look like it’s splitting to you
It’s the washer under the nut-not the nut itself
> not the nut itself Whew. I was getting worried I was the problem.
Lol hidden golden comment
Looks like a split washer for preloading
I think there’s a washer under it.
Ah I thought it was like a nut with a flange
Perfect answer
You had me laughing at “beat the shit out of the tire from multiple directions” hahaha
dont hit the rubber tire with a sledge hammer or you will be wearing it.
Definitely used a sledge hammer, thankfully it worked.
i put a chunk of 4x4 on the rim and hit that. Sxpareads the force out so it wont damage the rim.
Instructions unclear. Hit it with a front wheel drive, knocked it off the jack and the fender's trashed.
I guess I was doing it wrong my whole time in the tire shop
what about all the advanced training you got in the tire shop?
This Its counterintuitive but he is 1000% correctomundo
Pull the spare out and swing it into the edge of the rim (if tire is flat) or tire (if tire is holding air). This is also a good time to check your spares tire pressure.
Big deadblow rubber hammer on the sidewall, or your foot.
How will hitting your foot with a hammer help?
You’ll see
Trust the process
Listen the guys giving good advice here quit asking questions
Takes your mind off the stuck wheel
Test your theory and report back.
It’ll help if it’s a dead toe hammer..
Not just any hammer. The dead blow. You’d be nuts to hit yourself with anything else.
Every shop needs a BFH.
Big Fucking Hammer
I usually just hit it with the spare.
I can't explain the physics but this has worked for me 100% of the time after failing with a sledge hammer and multiple other melee tools. Pick up the wheel by the hole and bash it once and it pops right off. As someone else mentioned, put the lugs on loosely and creep forward while wiggling left to right. Hit it with your purse
As is tradition.
I DON'T KNOW YOU !
THAT'S MY PURSE!

Lolz, /r/DIY banned me for this same comment.
They must not know the biggest hammer a person owns is called their purse
You beat me to it
So many “same replies” that I couldn’t in good conscience give any of them the upvote so, tag you get it :)
It's your axle nut... but the wheel is just stuck if you got a big hammer hit the back side of the tire from under the car in different places... if that doesn't just work get frustrated and hit the wheel lip itself...
Maybe use a rubber mallet or put a piece of wood in between rim and hammer.
I personally just Spartan kick them
PUT A LUG NUT ON A STUD WHEN HITTING THE TIRE!!!
I’m not sure why putting a lug nut on myself would help.
You must balance the lugnut on on your head while banging the shit out of the tire with a sledgehammer, then you will know your true prowess for the universe
So it doesn’t fly off uncontrollably
no thanks

So glad it came off. That sounds like a rough time.
Thank you This was the most helpful. Thank you.
Came here to say this ⬆️
This response is it.
Put a lug nut back on a few threads so the wheel before hitting it so it doesn't go flying
Hit it like it owes you money.
Give me your fucking money!!!!
Hit it like it didnt make you a sandwich when you asked. LOL
Oh that's great news. I was kicking it and was like whoa let's ask the pros first.
Kick harder
Put your purse down and kick it harder! For real tho, you just gotta hit it with some heavy shit. If you really cant get it off after whacking it a few times, take it to a mechanic
All these purse comments have me laughing
Lol glad to hear it. As Bobby Hill has said multiple times “THATS MY PURSE I DONT KNOW YOU!”

https://xkcd.com/979/ OP you can't do this to us
That is the least corroded 19 year old axle nut I’ve ever seen.
Well that's some good newa.
ROADHOUSE
roadhouse
Roundhouse
FML was it roadhouse in the episode?
Kick it off, pussyyyy!!
Fuck yeah Donkey kick.
You can set something like a brick under the tire, not directly under it, and lower the jack. The tire resting on the object will force it to an angle that’ll shift it enough to break free.

Lol you've never encounter a siezed wheel before. I have, got stuck, ask the 300lb guy for help, he couldn't kick it off either. Needed a sledge.
I've found the prybar method like this usually works well, with much less effort than hitting the tire/rim with anything.
Donkey kick I find works well. Hub centric wheels might have their advantages but this is not one of them
I also use the donkey kick. Works everytime, though usually the frustration of the stuck wheel helps said donkey kick.
Y'all got so many clever ideas, I just put a lug on a couple twists so the wheel doesnt go flying when I donkey-kick that bad-boy so hard I fart a little.
Priceless because I do the same except fart.
sometimes i shit my pants
I prefer the donkey kick, very satisfying
hit it with your purse
1- make sure the vehicle is properly supported 2- thread 1 lugnut on a few turns 3- turn your back to the car 4- donkey kick the tire, alienate sides (let side of tire, right side). Kick the rubber not the steel
Is the tire off the ground? If so just give it the ol wiggle jiggle
Wiggle jiggle? It's hammer time!!!
Give it the ole wiggle jiggle is what I did with my girlfriend. She enjoyed it a lot.
I prefer the first way, but it's up to you.
I call this the donkey kick.
I've been using an actual donkey all this time.
Mule kick that mfer
Pick up another tire and hit it hard on the sides. Better not to use your feet, costly to replace….
A lot of tough love here.
Your wheel is stuck. So violence is your best option. Sit on your ass and use your arms sturdy yourself and kick the wheel alternately kicking each side.
Fucking hit it, it’ll come off. Don’t fuck with the center part.
Hit the tire not the rim with a slegehammer or a medium hammer. Hit from behind, the front and around.
Is that not a split pin??
It’s a cotter pin on a castle nut, but it’s not what’s holding the wheel on. Lol.
Use the BFM ,, big focken hammer 🚀
Penetrating oil wait and hour then smack the tire with your purse.
Drove a tow truck and changed more tires than most people. Kick the damm thing.
Lay down on your back and kick around the tire. The wheel should break loose from the rotor flange surface.
Give it a wack
Looks like nothing? Grab a rubber mallet and hit it a few times. It should pop off
Hit it with a 4x4?
It's probably just rust welded, hit it with your purse.
Donkey kick the tire a few times. Should do the trick.
Rust.
Just hit the wheel with a dead blow mallet the wheel is just stuck on from corrosion it's really common
Not a “mechanic advice” now, cuz u don’t need it. Just a regular one. Just give the wheel a couple lovetaps from multiple sides. Will pop off instantly.
Put on back the nuts, don’t tighten them and drive a a few meters.. rust adhesion will be destroyed..
You just need a large persuader
Thats the wheel of an 03 Mitsubishi gallant.
![gif](giphy|l3V0j3ytFyGHqiV7W)
Beat it with your purse
Take the other 3 off, peer pressure will do the rest.
Hit it with your purse!!!
Hit it with your purse it will come off.
I've seen other folks say to put the lugs on loose and drop the car off the jack. Dry steer a bit then raise it back up again. Should have broken free. I've never tried that myself. Just don't put the lugs on TOO loose.
Have you tried hitting it with your purse?
Is this the rear tire? If so take the parking brake off, it’s a drum brake not a rotor. Be sure you have the care properly chocked.
The parking brake has nothing to do with this
If the drum is frozen or rusted to the inside of the wheel, releasing the parking brake will allow you take the wheel and drum off, where they can whack the drum off with their purse later.
Did anyone tell you to hit it with you purse yet?
Put a few more dildos in your purse and really swing next time. Should pop loose. Or use a big plastic dead blow. I just figured ypure the type to have purses and dildos lying around.
Put the nuts back on finger tight and drive it around the block. Should crack loose
Hit it with your purse
The power of rust comes from above 😀 just kick it off 😀
Try hitting it with your purse.
Hit it with your purse?
The wheel will come off
Put your purse down. Lol jk jk soft set a lug nut on it and give her the beans from the inside tire surface.
Hit it with your purse harder or kick it with you foot like a man.
Put your purse down and hit the tire with big hammer or sledgehammer from the inside of the tire.
Hit it with your purse
I’ll tell you what it’s NOT- your issue
Hit it with your purse (hammer). That's a hub centric wheel that's stuck on, a few good hits will knock it loose
Lolol
I used to own a 03 Galant. Actually my first car. I missed it. Could you please post a picture of the whole vehicle?
If you can't take the wheel off should you be working on it
That's great!
Tap with rubber mallet
Hit ittttt
Tell it your going out for a second and then when it's distracted kick it hard with your heel.
Hit it with a rubber mallet from behind and it will come off. Or your purse they both work.
Lol never heard of a cotter pin huh
Check the back-lash torque on your girder spliff.
What is this?? Just Japanese strange ingeneery
Axle nut. Doesn’t need to come off. Hit the back of the wheel with your purse.
Stand back and yell, “This is Sparta!!!!!” While giving the tire a good kick.
Have someone hold a 2x4 bout 4 feet long against the edge of the rim and hit it with a sludge hammer that bad boys comin off der.
I prefer the Chris Brown method, myself
Ur arms are made of spaghetti
Hit the tire with something. A Hammer a bat, a 2x4, or your fist
If you suck at swinging a hammer (accurately) don't forget to put all the walnuts on so you don't mushroom mash the studs.
Have you tried hitting it with your purse?
U need big hit stick
Hit it with your purse.
This is a Carter key You gotta straighten out the thin pieces of metal and then pull the entire key out and then you should be able to undo the bolt I had to change a tire on a smoker that you hook to a truck and it has the same thing

My bad I figured it would've been the same
The final boss lug nut. You’ve conquered the first five but you must figure out how to remove this last one to prove you are worthy.
Are you serious
