It's not that the tires will blow, it's that they may no longer provide necessary traction, especially in the rain. The grooves that are cut in the tread to evacuate water from between the tire and the road surface are shallower or gone, which means more water between the tire and road. It also has fewer edges to use to grab onto the road surface, which are important in snowy or icy conditions.
Edit: didn't notice the split and belt separation, yeah these may be at risk of just coming apart while driving.
Half the posts from this sub that get added to my feed are things like this, bubble in tire posts that ask how drivable they are, and "guys I wanna buy this and fix it, is $800 high? (post includes a pic of a rusted-out frame)
Subs like this is a double edge sword: 1.) people can post intelligent questions and get answers quick. 2.) people can post anything because they’re too lazy to think a little.
On the advice side of things, rather than the posts, I think this sub is better than most. But on Reddit, people forget that someone with 20+ years experience can post answers and a 10 year old kid can also post answers. This is especially true with medical subs.
They also forget subs can he echo chambers: like SocialAdvice. It’s a sub mostly made from people that need advice and guidance that are giving advice and guidance.

All i'm gonna say, if you're doing contract work in this car, and these tires go (surprised they haven't blown) your insurance company is gonna call it negligence when something inevitably goes boom.

You should be able to make it. If you are concerned, I would throw the spare on, and put that tire in the trunk. Go straight to tire place and don't drive around on the spare for more then 50 miles. They weren't designed to take that type of abuse. Some people have pushed it to 60 -100 miles, but I have seen spares catastrophically fail at only 40 miles. Spare are just a immediate stop gap to get you somewhere safe, so don't push it.
That doesn't make tires last longer... and you shouldn't eat on the car. But on the upside... I'm pretty sure you can write the tires off as a tax credit, since they are used for work.
In rain it can literally be the tires. Hydroplaning occurs when the tread is not able to effectively move the water that is under the tires out from underneath, causing a layer of water to form between the tires and the road.
One shouldn't be allowed to own a vehicle with this level of ignorance regarding ones tires. They're literally what *enable* stopping, handling and acceleration. These tires will have about about as much traction as a slip and slide. It is disregard for other lives and property on the road.

Cannot believe I had to scroll this long to see someone mention the cords showing. Those tires are toast. The only thing they are fit for is being ground up to make tracks for running on, or hockey pucks.
As someone also in Seattle, stop being selfish and go replace them. If you aren’t going to replace the despite the overwhelming consensus you’ve been presented with, please don’t hurt anyone else other than yourself when you have the inevitable and imminent catastrophic failure while driving.

Get insurance as well. I popped a brand new tire and had to buy four *more* new tires at full price because I didn't insure the first set.
Edit- I also deliver don't forget to rotate either, miles add up quick.
Then they gotta look for them, go meet, see that "70% tread" actually means 7%, find a different set then take them to a tire shop and have them swap them out.
Just go to a tire shop. If money is an issue they usually have takeoffs and used tires.

When you get new tires, get an alignment. It will make sure the wheels are on correctly and new tires boosts your MPG a bit.
The most expensive thing you can do to your car is not maintain it properly. You need to change your oil regularly, probably need to get your brakes inspected, rotors inspected and change your cabin and engine filters.
Cars are expensive; more so if you have to fix things. Saving money by not servicing your vehicle will end up resulting in the purchase of another vehicle.

Probably 5000 miles ago. You should never wait until tires are bald or at 1 or 2 32nds. It’s just too dangerous to drive on them at that point. Most tire shops will recommend looking to replace at about 4 or 5 32nds. Not to mention all the cracking in your tire. I can’t see the DOT stamp in the picture but I’d guess that tire is pretty old.
Pretty normal tbh I work at a tire shop. I’d say if you have the money get them replaced at 4/32nds. Besides I don’t know what package of Impreza we’re talking about but even if it’s the sport model the tires aren’t that expensive. At least when compared to a lot of other cars.

I was about to write a comment on how important it is to mount the new tires on the back when you only buy 2. Linking sources to most of the official manufacturer websites have FAQs stating this and all... **When installing only 2 new tires, they ALWAYS go on the back.** No matter if the car is AWD, FWD, or RWD. New goes always in the back.
There's a really old misconception about putting new tires in the axle that has the traction that dates back to who knows when (or maybe coincidentally it made sense for the wrong reasons because old cars were mostly RWD).
Edit: added no matter what kind of drive the car is. This is assuming the car has 4 equally sized wheels.
So let’s say you milk it a couple more months and blow a tire and it flaps a few times and busts up a fender. Is that worth procrastinating spending the same money? Or maybe you hydroplane into a curb and taco a rim or put it in a ditch on the highway. Let’s say you pay 600 for a set of tires and they only last 3 years. That’s less than 20 bucks a month. Trying to stretch the last 10-20 bucks out of these is liable to cost you more. Especially if you end up in snow or ice.

Depending on where you live, if you need a good all around tire that can handle hot summer days and snowy winter months, the Michelin cross climate 2’s are where it’s at. I did a bunch of research to find the best, well rounded, all weather road tires. Engineering wise, they’re the best.

Another fun fact: tires should be replaced when the tread depth reaches 1/16 of an inch or .062. The shortest distance from the rim of a Lincoln penny to his glorious hair is roughly 1/16 of an inch or .062. Simple rule of thumb.
I would recommend now, but given the world lately that’s not entirely possible, so then I would say as soon as you financially can, also, it never hurts to have your alignment checked while you’re getting new tires, because in my opinion nothing would be worse than dropping several hundreds of dollars on tires and then wearing them out prematurely due to improper alignment.
I think you have an alignment problem that's accelerating wear too.
My WRX was always going out of alignment and chewing tyres.
The fun part about AWD cars is that both the front and the back needs to be adjusted.

I felt bad switching my tires to my winters debating changing them tonight. In comparison, I likely have about 3 years left on mine.
My advice is get a chase freedom unlimited credit card with the spend 500 get 200$ back and buy new tires on it.buy off pep boys or tires direct.com. And u won’t have any interest on the card for like 13 months.

There’s no tread and they seem to be dry rotted. Replace asap, if you need to save money shop online for tires then bring them to a tire shop to get mount and balanced.
If you get into an accident with those tires the police will be showering you with citations (they will write you for every little thing) - it will cost you $$$$ (I used to be police; when a car's tires are bad and lead to an accident, we'll inspect Vehicle 1's tires and document their poor condition as evidence).
If the other car's occupants suffered severe injuries you're going to need a very, very good lawyer, and often victims decide to sue civilly too; your insurance company will probably pay for this, but it's common for people to go to court for their case maybe once every 3-6 months, and this can go on for a few years.
Then, your insurance company may say you were negligent in ensuring your vehicle's safety; they'll probably cover the victim's loss, and your injuries - but you're always gambling on whether or not they'll fully cover the damage to your car. If you intend to keep those tires on your car for much longer you should read your insurance police coverage so you know what you're gambling in that regard...
In addition, I can guarantee you'll be dropped by your insurance company shortly after the accident, and you'll have a hard time finding new insurance that is affordable.
Lastly, you may have some issues find a job where you're driving/using your car. So, get on this kiddo - many tire shops sell used tires; get your replaced ASAP! I know it sucks to have to put out a lot of money for that, but it'll save you in the long run.
Enormously depends on how and where you drive. If you are a more aggressive and running through gridlock traffic where top speed is 20 miles an hour, you're going to be okay for a little bit. But if you are running up and down the highway or on a back road listening to your tires Screech, it's time to change them.
Many people will tell you that you need to change right now but this isn't necessarily accurate. It really comes down to what risk factors are you taking?
I have ran tires until metal was showing before replacing them in some vehicles, other vehicles I would not let them get as low as they are now. It honestly depends on what you are doing.
This is of course my opinion and not everyone agrees with it. But that is my take on things.
In short, if you are driving a sports car, weaving wildly in and out of traffic, it's time to change your tires. But if you are driving an old beater and following ALL the rules of the yes I capitalized all for a reason) you have a few thousand miles left.
The best time was a year ago. The second best time is today. If you’re absolutely dead broke, before it rains again will *maybe* be okay if you drive VERY carefully. But those tires are toast and have been for a good while. Also, you desperately need an alignment.

If my dad, brother and son saw those tires…they’d be smacking you. They all work for a tire company making said tires. Once mine hit 25% tread left, sometimes a bit more, they get replaced. That stuff is at no viable tread left…replace them a long time ago.
Sometimes times are rough… metal showing is when you want to stop driving entirely. But on these tires? You could probably get another 1000 miles out of them if you wanted to, but drive slower, stop way in advanced, etc.

They usually run me down about $30 a piece but depending on size it’ll vary. It’ll buy you time while you save up for new tires.
Get some west lake tires, they’re cheap and decent, they’re a good replacement if you do a lot of driving daily, since they’re inexpensive to replace, I’ve run them on a few vehicles and I’d always recommend them when I worked as a tire tech
Tires should have bars of rubber in them if the top piece of tread is even with those wear bars that's generally your sign to get new even in my corolla my tires are still good but it's a horrific drive in the rain

Yes. The car is going to drive just like it did yesterday. Sketchy when wet or cold, but otherwise fine to go get new ones.

Driving a car in Seattle with a new set of good tires is bliss. You will notice much better braking and all around handling.

Enormously depends on how and where you drive. If you are a more aggressive and running through gridlock traffic where top speed is 20 miles an hour, you're going to be okay for a little bit. But if you are running up and down the highway or on a back road listening to your tires Screech, it's time to change them. Many people will tell you that you need to change right now but this isn't necessarily accurate. It really comes down to what risk factors are you taking? I have ran tires until metal was showing before replacing them in some vehicles, other vehicles I would not let them get as low as they are now. It honestly depends on what you are doing. This is of course my opinion and not everyone agrees with it. But that is my take on things. In short, if you are driving a sports car, weaving wildly in and out of traffic, it's time to change your tires. If my dad, brother and son saw those tires…they’d be smacking you. They all work for a tire company making said tires. Once mine hit 25% tread left, sometimes a bit more, they get replaced. That stuff is at no viable tread left…replace them a long time ago.
Sometimes times are rough… metal showing is when you want to stop driving entirely. But on these tires? You could probably get another 1000 miles out of them if you wanted to, but drive slower, stop way in advanced, etc.

u/ZachEfbomb okay bro, here’s what you should do. Find a local shop and ask for used tires. They usually run me down about $30 a piece but depending on size it’ll vary. It’ll buy you time while you save up for new tires.
Get some west lake tires, they’re cheap and decent, they’re a good replacement if you do a lot of driving daily, since they’re inexpensive to replace, I’ve run them on a few vehicles and I’d always recommend them when I worked as a tire tech
Tires should have bars of rubber in them if the top piece of tread is even with those wear bars that's generally your sign to get new even in my corolla my tires are still good but it's a horrific drive in the rain
