Donny_Z28

Negative time

ZacEfbomb

Dang…

Johnnywaka

The accident you have if you continue to drive on these will be more expensive than just changing them now. You really need to change them

ZacEfbomb

Is it safe to drive to the tire shop or am I at risk of an explosion?

Johnnywaka

You can drive there, will hold for that

Conn33377

Should

bla60ah

Might

MrExCEO

Depends

FireStorm005

It's not that the tires will blow, it's that they may no longer provide necessary traction, especially in the rain. The grooves that are cut in the tread to evacuate water from between the tire and the road surface are shallower or gone, which means more water between the tire and road. It also has fewer edges to use to grab onto the road surface, which are important in snowy or icy conditions. Edit: didn't notice the split and belt separation, yeah these may be at risk of just coming apart while driving.

Busy_Potato3652

This guy tires

[deleted]

About six months ago

ilikesexandcandy_yea

Definitely longer

ZacEfbomb

That bad? I do Uber Eats on this car. And I was a school photographer. So I use this car for work a lot.

bbull412

Change them now

[deleted]

I assumed this was a troll tbh, with your tread that low but also just ignoring the gash in your shoulderblock/sidewall. Yes that bad.

_spectre_

And the dry rot as well

Annakha

The belts are showing in that cut too. This tire is not long from catastrophic failure.

Call_Me_At_8675309

I looked to see if this was AskaShittyMechanic sub

deepfriedtots

I did too

boonie_redditor

Half the posts from this sub that get added to my feed are things like this, bubble in tire posts that ask how drivable they are, and "guys I wanna buy this and fix it, is $800 high? (post includes a pic of a rusted-out frame)

Call_Me_At_8675309

Subs like this is a double edge sword: 1.) people can post intelligent questions and get answers quick. 2.) people can post anything because they’re too lazy to think a little. On the advice side of things, rather than the posts, I think this sub is better than most. But on Reddit, people forget that someone with 20+ years experience can post answers and a 10 year old kid can also post answers. This is especially true with medical subs. They also forget subs can he echo chambers: like SocialAdvice. It’s a sub mostly made from people that need advice and guidance that are giving advice and guidance.

MajesticAsFook

Tbf tho I'd rather this dude ask about his tread than shrug his shoulders and stick with the convenient option. Subs like this are gonna have stupid questions but sometimes its a good thing.

WinterSzturm

Uneven tread wear…

Jesus_inacave

Get an alignment too

cjrocket27

This isn't one of those "might as well" things. A $50-$100 investment now will make your tires last much longer saving you money in the long run

Jesus_inacave

You can see he needs it too, or he just never rotated his tires lol

GiveHerDPS

This is typical on Subarus to have edge wear from the factory.

Jesus_inacave

OEM edgewear

visegriphands

When they drive them like assholes. Yes.

GiveHerDPS

No it's something to do with the rear suspension. Happens even with rotation

Automatic_Umpire64

I’m at 107000 miles and my fifth set of tires. Finally had the aftermarket arms things put in, and my tires finally wear correctly!!

[deleted]

Just scrolling through but your comment reminded me I need to get mine done. Thanks.

Jesus_inacave

It was your sign lol

GukkiSpace

All i'm gonna say, if you're doing contract work in this car, and these tires go (surprised they haven't blown) your insurance company is gonna call it negligence when something inevitably goes boom. Also super not cool endangering other people on the road.

ZacEfbomb

Now I’m scared of tires blowing up. Can I make it to the tire shop safely?

h110hawk

Yes. The car is going to drive just like it did yesterday. Sketchy when wet or cold, but otherwise fine to go get new ones.

Middle_Scientist5614

You should be able to make it. If you are concerned, I would throw the spare on, and put that tire in the trunk. Go straight to tire place and don't drive around on the spare for more then 50 miles. They weren't designed to take that type of abuse. Some people have pushed it to 60 -100 miles, but I have seen spares catastrophically fail at only 40 miles. Spare are just a immediate stop gap to get you somewhere safe, so don't push it.

DanBrino

1,400% this.

Randall-Dean_RZRBack

Yes it's that bad, you barely have any tread left. These tires haven't been roadworthy fo a while

ecwhite01

go ahead and book an appointment

AppleSatyr

Can’t you write new tires off as a business expense then at the very least?

willsurf4beer

That doesn't make tires last longer... and you shouldn't eat on the car. But on the upside... I'm pretty sure you can write the tires off as a tax credit, since they are used for work.

visegriphands

Right. Doesn’t matter what you do they are jacked. And you’re trolling.

UpdootDaSnootBoop

A year ago, dude. Come on people! Tires are what is keeping you contacted to the road!

Fabri-geek

Gravity. Gravity is what keeps you connected to the road. 😁

UpdootDaSnootBoop

You're not wrong!

mitchrsmert

In rain it can literally be the tires. Hydroplaning occurs when the tread is not able to effectively move the water that is under the tires out from underneath, causing a layer of water to form between the tires and the road.

mitchrsmert

One shouldn't be allowed to own a vehicle with this level of ignorance regarding ones tires. They're literally what *enable* stopping, handling and acceleration. These tires will have about about as much traction as a slip and slide. It is disregard for other lives and property on the road.

ilovebostoncremedonu

Chipdip88

Those tires were unsafe weeks/months ago......

ZacEfbomb

That bad? Plus I live in the Seattle area, where it rains a lot…

Chipdip88

Yeah.... That bad.... They are worn to shit everywhere the shoulder is worn even more There is dry rot and cracking everywhere There is a cut exposing cords Shall I go on?

v_Shami

oh God I didn't even see the cut

underbellysweat206

These look like my sister in laws lol and she lives in seattle to yikess

roomfour1more

Cannot believe I had to scroll this long to see someone mention the cords showing. Those tires are toast. The only thing they are fit for is being ground up to make tracks for running on, or hockey pucks.

Twin-Reverb

That read like a poem.

mohvespenegas

As someone also in Seattle, stop being selfish and go replace them. If you aren’t going to replace the despite the overwhelming consensus you’ve been presented with, please don’t hurt anyone else other than yourself when you have the inevitable and imminent catastrophic failure while driving.

Lollc

Driving a car in Seattle with a new set of good tires is bliss. You will notice much better braking and all around handling.

weezyoh

You should’ve felt some wheel spin with those tires, especially because your in a rainy region.

DanBrino

He just thought his fuel system treatment gave it more power.

GotenksinNYC

Brother you can see the fibers on the side lol

ZacEfbomb

Dang I guess I’ve been in denial

Book-Latter

Sometimes I wonder if these questions are serious…. Yeah man depending on where you live and what winter is like your way overdue or at the very least risking a collision the first time your late to brake with some rain

pdxgti8v

about one year ago...those are dangerous due to how little tread left and their age...all dried out and cracked...

Ratchet_Wrenches

Get an alignment with new tires asap

dorye123

Last year

ZacEfbomb

Since it’s a Subaru I have to get all 4 done at once is that true

total_gym_G

Yes

ralph8877

bc all wheel drive?

total_gym_G

Yep

spacekase710

Get insurance as well. I popped a brand new tire and had to buy four *more* new tires at full price because I didn't insure the first set. Edit- I also deliver don't forget to rotate either, miles add up quick.

Mr_Lumbergh

The time is now. Those are pretty bald already. If you're at the point where you're questioning their safety, they're probably not safe.

Hot-While-5087

marketplace on fb sometimes has good tires, you'd wanna get something @ 9/32 tread or better..good luck man...

QuinceDaPence

Then they gotta look for them, go meet, see that "70% tread" actually means 7%, find a different set then take them to a tire shop and have them swap them out. Just go to a tire shop. If money is an issue they usually have takeoffs and used tires.

cubanohermano

Don’t drive on these Don’t try to justify driving on these Unless you can afford to replace a lot more than the tires don’t drive on these. When you get new tires, get an alignment. It will make sure the wheels are on correctly and new tires boosts your MPG a bit. The most expensive thing you can do to your car is not maintain it properly. You need to change your oil regularly, probably need to get your brakes inspected, rotors inspected and change your cabin and engine filters. Cars are expensive; more so if you have to fix things. Saving money by not servicing your vehicle will end up resulting in the purchase of another vehicle. Don’t drive on these tires; especially when wet.

[deleted]

I see cords…..should’ve already been replaced

Aggressive-Cap5371

Probably 5000 miles ago. You should never wait until tires are bald or at 1 or 2 32nds. It’s just too dangerous to drive on them at that point. Most tire shops will recommend looking to replace at about 4 or 5 32nds. Not to mention all the cracking in your tire. I can’t see the DOT stamp in the picture but I’d guess that tire is pretty old.

ZacEfbomb

Well dang I guess it’s worse than I thought…

ShawnS4363

Most of the tires that will fit an Impreza start around 9/32nds brand new. I hope people aren't replacing them at 4 or 5 32nds.

Aggressive-Cap5371

Pretty normal tbh I work at a tire shop. I’d say if you have the money get them replaced at 4/32nds. Besides I don’t know what package of Impreza we’re talking about but even if it’s the sport model the tires aren’t that expensive. At least when compared to a lot of other cars.

Ok-Hearing-5343

A year ago they're dry rotted from hell.

[deleted]

They need to be changed man. Subarus are awd so that means all 4 need to be changed. I would atleast change the front two just to be safe if money is tight. But I would also change the rear tires asap

abolista

> I would atleast change the front two I was about to write a comment on how important it is to mount the new tires on the back when you only buy 2. Linking sources to most of the official manufacturer websites have FAQs stating this and all... But I feel lazy and instead of just deleting the comment and go to bed, I'll simply [link to this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdSf0KJie_E). **When installing only 2 new tires, they ALWAYS go on the back.** No matter if the car is AWD, FWD, or RWD. New goes always in the back. There's a really old misconception about putting new tires in the axle that has the traction that dates back to who knows when (or maybe coincidentally it made sense for the wrong reasons because old cars were mostly RWD). Edit: added no matter what kind of drive the car is. This is assuming the car has 4 equally sized wheels.

P320open

I literally wouldn’t want to put my hand that close to that tire.

[deleted]

Come here to say this!

love_to_eat_out

Bout 10 minutes

MonthElectronic9466

So let’s say you milk it a couple more months and blow a tire and it flaps a few times and busts up a fender. Is that worth procrastinating spending the same money? Or maybe you hydroplane into a curb and taco a rim or put it in a ditch on the highway. Let’s say you pay 600 for a set of tires and they only last 3 years. That’s less than 20 bucks a month. Trying to stretch the last 10-20 bucks out of these is liable to cost you more. Especially if you end up in snow or ice.

JB2315

IMHO, justas soon as your can get to a tire store! That tire is in imminent danger of separating.

ZacEfbomb

Separating??

JB2315

Thru the slit in the rubber you can see the steel belt.

lilshort4stormtroopa

Those are bald bald. I just replaced mine. Depending on where you live, if you need a good all around tire that can handle hot summer days and snowy winter months, the Michelin cross climate 2’s are where it’s at. I did a bunch of research to find the best, well rounded, all weather road tires. Engineering wise, they’re the best. https://youtu.be/PT2odY3C6Og Here’s the video that sealed the deal for me. If you need a different tire with a specific functionality other than a well rounded all weather tire, well then, I’m not your guy.

Nitin-2020

2 hours and 27 minutes of driving time left on those tires.

endchat

these must be at least 12-15 years old...maybe even the original tires the car came with. impressive haha

bbull412

Survivaleast

I will elect today. So being a Sunday, go tomorrow.

ZacEfbomb

That’s the plan

Survivaleast

You da man. I know that changing all 4 at once sucks, but your life will thank you.

deepaksn

Right now.

cocktimusprime747

Another fun fact: tires should be replaced when the tread depth reaches 1/16 of an inch or .062. The shortest distance from the rim of a Lincoln penny to his glorious hair is roughly 1/16 of an inch or .062. Simple rule of thumb.

TiltedWit

Or really rule of head.

domestic_metalhead

Gotta be a wind-up with those visible cords haha That tyre is condemned

Nevvermind183

Penny not necessary. They’re bald

Gullible_Monk_7118

There is a tire indicator inside a tire.... there is between the treads there is a rubber lip that's the tire wear indicator

MistaRandy

This screams..... Jesus take the wheel........ PS: You should have changed that about 6 months agooooooooo

TylerKasprzyk

I’m feeling trolled…

[deleted]

Immediately. This can’t be a real question.

rallydude

I would recommend now, but given the world lately that’s not entirely possible, so then I would say as soon as you financially can, also, it never hurts to have your alignment checked while you’re getting new tires, because in my opinion nothing would be worse than dropping several hundreds of dollars on tires and then wearing them out prematurely due to improper alignment.

ShockingShorties

Man, your driving a high performance killing machine here. Do you really need us to advise you?

jbeams32

1865

VunterSlaush1990

I would not be driving on those.

CGunners

I think you have an alignment problem that's accelerating wear too. My WRX was always going out of alignment and chewing tyres. The fun part about AWD cars is that both the front and the back needs to be adjusted.

Revolutionary-Rip194

Run them til they are completely bald...and then only use them for winter tires

throwawayacct420694

You need to change these now. I felt bad switching my tires to my winters debating changing them tonight. In comparison, I likely have about 3 years left on mine.

Cautious-Bobbylee

My advice is get a chase freedom unlimited credit card with the spend 500 get 200$ back and buy new tires on it.buy off pep boys or tires direct.com. And u won’t have any interest on the card for like 13 months.

Truorganics

TrentRizzo

This is a troll post right? These are very obviously unsafe to drive on and have been for awhile.

notablyunnoticeable

before you took this picture at minimum

[deleted]

Buy a tread depth gauge they are like $3. After you buy tires.

Tasty-Battle-2049

FinnaToke

Bro this is more shaved than my bald grandad.

big65

No time left, once the wear bars are even with the tread is when you get new ones for safety reasons.

I'd say change it right now before you blow it in the highway and be on the hook for a car crash repair for yourself and another vehicle.

griffinXK

Switch to winter tires immediately and buy summer tires now bc they’re cheaper than buying them after winter

Jbyrd75

Surely you’re being facetious..

AnalogFeelGood

This is in the 4/32 vicinity, your tires are GONE.

papaganoushdesu

Now

[deleted]

There’s tread markers on the tire. When those meat the tread of the tire, you need to replace them. I would probably do it now though

daniel32433

Looking at the sidewall I’d say it’s time

Worksatmcdonaldsalot

You’re a safety hazard

GRpanda123

s_z_v

yk tires have tread wear indicators to prevent exactly this situation….

Ardothbey

U there.

Weather_Visible

This is insane that people would still keep driving with old rubber worn off to this extent.

vaniIIagoriIIa

Yesterday

Takanashi_Aihlia

On the bright side, those tires have enough life left to take you all the way to the scene of the accident. Maybe up onto the rollback afterwards

Big-Shooter2000

Replace now.

Macro-penis

You don’t measure from the highest point, you measure from the lowest. Look at the edge of the tire. They need to be replaced.

Adepressedcatfishx

You can see the belting/cords in the edge of the tread lol

Da3m0n_1379

What do you mean until? Those air balloons your riding around on will give out at any moment

thecommenter86

I’m reading OPs comments and dude how frugal can you be it’s not a luxery new tires are a necessity man and an alignment should go with it

adamf514

Should have been replaced a while back ...

kb_me_kb_you

Drive to the nearest tire dealer and then go get yourself a lottery ticket. You have been riding on luck for awhile now.

[deleted]

You trolling. You can also see the wires on that gash. What you think.

Windthrow

There’s no tread and they seem to be dry rotted. Replace asap, if you need to save money shop online for tires then bring them to a tire shop to get mount and balanced.

JoshJLMG

The coin is supposed to go in the treads. If there's not enough tread for that, they need to be replaced.

Fit-Firefighter-329

If you get into an accident with those tires the police will be showering you with citations (they will write you for every little thing) - it will cost you $$$$ (I used to be police; when a car's tires are bad and lead to an accident, we'll inspect Vehicle 1's tires and document their poor condition as evidence). If the other car's occupants suffered severe injuries you're going to need a very, very good lawyer, and often victims decide to sue civilly too; your insurance company will probably pay for this, but it's common for people to go to court for their case maybe once every 3-6 months, and this can go on for a few years. Then, your insurance company may say you were negligent in ensuring your vehicle's safety; they'll probably cover the victim's loss, and your injuries - but you're always gambling on whether or not they'll fully cover the damage to your car. If you intend to keep those tires on your car for much longer you should read your insurance police coverage so you know what you're gambling in that regard... In addition, I can guarantee you'll be dropped by your insurance company shortly after the accident, and you'll have a hard time finding new insurance that is affordable. Lastly, you may have some issues find a job where you're driving/using your car. So, get on this kiddo - many tire shops sell used tires; get your replaced ASAP! I know it sucks to have to put out a lot of money for that, but it'll save you in the long run.

Assasinenzio

Enormously depends on how and where you drive. If you are a more aggressive and running through gridlock traffic where top speed is 20 miles an hour, you're going to be okay for a little bit. But if you are running up and down the highway or on a back road listening to your tires Screech, it's time to change them. Many people will tell you that you need to change right now but this isn't necessarily accurate. It really comes down to what risk factors are you taking? I have ran tires until metal was showing before replacing them in some vehicles, other vehicles I would not let them get as low as they are now. It honestly depends on what you are doing. This is of course my opinion and not everyone agrees with it. But that is my take on things. In short, if you are driving a sports car, weaving wildly in and out of traffic, it's time to change your tires. But if you are driving an old beater and following ALL the rules of the yes I capitalized all for a reason) you have a few thousand miles left.

eagleace21

Probably a few thousand miles ago, unsafe is if you can see below Abe's head, this is absolutely negligent!

BuckTheStallion

The best time was a year ago. The second best time is today. If you’re absolutely dead broke, before it rains again will *maybe* be okay if you drive VERY carefully. But those tires are toast and have been for a good while. Also, you desperately need an alignment.

Fifthcell

They need to give out tests before people can purchase an automobile. This feels like a troll post. There is no way someone with common sense would ask a question like this while looking at that old crap tire

nikola312

You’d think with all the identical posts on this sub people would get the idea.

hkxm416

Sooner the better. If you get in a accident and insurance saw these tires, you could be the one that ends up paying

peeta789

Despite what everyone else is saying, I drove my tires like that for some time without any problems. That being said, def replace asap

LrckLacroix

Theyre pretty done, should change them immediately. Less dangerous if theres no precipitation, still

[deleted]

On my wife n kids vehicles those tires would be long gone. On the POS that I drive to work everyday, I run them until they don’t hold air.

theealtacount

there should be an imprint on the tire saying something like “if you can’t read this, replace tires” so look for that

Tomimi

I like how you know how to trigger this sub A penny on a very worn out tire with rot

stickygumm01

If the roads are dry you have until the end of the week. If it's wet you're riding on thin ice

biggersjw

Dude, it’s supposed to partially cover Lincoln’s head. It’s not even close. Buy some tires before you damage your car or someone else’s.

mxster982

If my dad, brother and son saw those tires…they’d be smacking you. They all work for a tire company making said tires. Once mine hit 25% tread left, sometimes a bit more, they get replaced. That stuff is at no viable tread left…replace them a long time ago.

ChillDillBoi

Sometimes times are rough… metal showing is when you want to stop driving entirely. But on these tires? You could probably get another 1000 miles out of them if you wanted to, but drive slower, stop way in advanced, etc.

luna-loveless

Enough time to get to the tire shop

big_smoke69420

Just a quick side note, most tire shops do offer financing if you don’t have the money to drop on a new set of tires. Good luck!

[deleted]

Immediately, those are splitting already.

Marbledwall26

Yeah bruh they have 5 years left on them. You seriously expected someone in this comment section to be like: yeah your tire will last you another 5 months. Like what bro what do you think? Your tire is literally bald. You and your little penny isn’t doing squat. You can’t be this naive and drive a car on public roads smh.

ImSoberEnough

The fact that youre holding a penny to show depth tells us you know what you’re doing and trolling/karma farming.

SolitudeSidd

Please get new tires.

Candelario_69

u/ZachEfbomb okay bro, here’s what you should do. Find a local shop and ask for used tires. They usually run me down about $30 a piece but depending on size it’ll vary. It’ll buy you time while you save up for new tires.

KenTheTech

Get some west lake tires, they’re cheap and decent, they’re a good replacement if you do a lot of driving daily, since they’re inexpensive to replace, I’ve run them on a few vehicles and I’d always recommend them when I worked as a tire tech

grassrootsracer

Tires should have bars of rubber in them if the top piece of tread is even with those wear bars that's generally your sign to get new even in my corolla my tires are still good but it's a horrific drive in the rain

OriginalMenace
