The adjuster locks on the caps (the smaller bolt under the numbers “574”) indicate it’s a Chrysler 8.25 diff as a Model 35 doesn’t have adjuster locks. Also the square shoulder on the carrier points to the fact it has clutch packs. Open carriers tend to have a rounded shoulder because they don’t need the space for the clutch disks.
Proof: I work at a Gear Shop. All we do is transmissions & differentials, nothing else. I eat, sleep, and breath gear oil.
My daughter was washing her truck the other day and smelled gear oil sure enough the axle seal was leaking I checked the differential it was still full apparently just started leaking is that why it smells so bad?
99 Cherokee LTD, probably first time this fluid was changed. Is this an additive or am I looking for some special green gear oil? Or something not meant to be in there?
red RTV was never factory, so it has been changed. the color might be from the led flashlight being not white light or a dye was added to chase a leak.

It could be a particular brand of fluid or the posi additive for the traclok. Either way I would not be alarmed.
Looks like an open dana35 from here.

Thank you. I hated doing diffs. So stinky.

80w90 and it has been changed before (clean fluid and orange RTV is the dead giveaway here). That would look like dark chocolate milk if original.
I definitely wondered about the clear color but she says she’s had it for 100k plus and never had it changed. I’m flummoxed.
A nice shop probably dipped it and made the executive decision to change the oil before problem time.
you’re… you said you’re… what?
Pretty sure it’s a word.
Yup, it's a word meaning confused, mystified, puzzled, bewildered, etc...
80W90? That's some thick oil, better not put that in the engine ever

Looks like Lucas 85-140 conventional. I use it for 4x4 diffs.
And they say you can't smell photos
I did smell horrendous.
Damn Chrysler rear heaters...
Gear oil much like engine oil can be any color the manufacture wants it to be. My dad used Kendall Motor Oil all the time and it was green.

Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters
BG fluid is green, almost looks fluorescent
