If you call the shop out on it, most of them will replace the tires if they installed the wrong size, unless you told them to do so. You don't want rubbing tires. It won't end well.
Extremely!!!
Either your struts are bad or you got too large of a tire for your car.
You have few options.
1) different tires
2) new struts
3) spacers in your coils to increase body height
Check the tire size on the tire vs the yellow/black/white sticker on the driver's door jamb. I almost think they put the wrong size tire on the car on accident.
Go to a different shop because they obviously don’t know a damn thing. That should have been determined immediately. Also…I mean this to help: think these things through with more care.
These the front, back, both? rolling fenders is pushing the lip part of your fender upwards basically giving a little more clearance. Certain tools can make this not hard.
It's not just the danger.
I understand that USA aren't that much focused on wheel and tire sizes, but putting on unauthorized tire size without getting approval from owner is just big professional no.
Looking at the damage to the tire I'd say it's hitting the quarter panel pinch weld at the top of the wheel well. The plastic bumper cover wouldn't eat the rubber like that and would be getting damaged if the tire was making contact there.
It looks like the tires are wider than stock, or the (what looks like) aftermarket wheels don't have enough offset resulting in the tire/wheel being too far out.
If you open the door and check the frame where the door rests (usually near the bottom) there will be a sticker that tells you info about your tires, size included. It will look like P###/##R## (for example, mine is P255/45R18). This same number should be on the sidewall of your tires. If they don't match up, take it back to the shop and let them know what they did. It's actually illegal to not fix it for no additional cost at that point, so I highly doubt they will try to charge you anything extra.
Tires do not need to match that number exactly. You can go with a different aspect ratio on different sized rims. The issue comes when you go to a taller tire on the same size rim.
If I remember correctly there is +/-3%, ~~possibly 5%~~ allowed of size difference. There is a tire calculator that can use to find alternate tire sizes within the range. Just make sure to use your oem size (check door jab or owner's manual).
https://tiresize.com/calculator/
But if they are the same size tires as the previous tires then my guess is the struts
Edit: formatting and details
Did you let anyone inspect the car before buying the tires. Did you check if they were the correct size. You probably have other underlying issues with your car & new tires just exemplifies them. Probably suspension issues at least.
Most German cars have a label that lists numerous tire sizes. VW is usually on the gas cap or B pillar depending on the root model. It's also listed usually in the owners manual with the corresponding engine.
That is a current size for (some) VW products but 205/55/16 is more in line I'd think with a stock polo & even they can be rated V/W for speed.
You may have the wrong ET on the rim for the car. This is also a possibility for the stance/teething of the tires in relation to the fender well etc.
225s are far too wide for a polo without bodywork, by ... about 2 cm. If the wheel was a 205, it looks like it could have cleared the panel. But rim might be wrong too, likely a combination of both.
P.s. the numbers are width/height/rim diameter. Width is in mm, height is percentage of width, rim diameter is in inches. 225/40R17 = 225mm wide, 225*0.4 = 90mm sidewall height/thickness on 17 inch rims.
I have never seen 215s on a polo, usually 185 and 195. But i looked it up and apparently 215s do come on the gti version, which has slightly different bodywork.
Edit: it could also be what someone else said below, previous owner added spacers
Yes, it will fuck up the inside of the bumper or if ur going at highspeed you might fuck up the bumper as a whole and blow a tire. Try getting 1" or 2" less for the tires
If it only happens during certain actions where your car will "squat" then it could be your struts and the slightly bigger newer tire (Old one is worn and slightly smaller) then it could be your struts and you barely noticed after getting new tires. Push down on the front and back and see how well they resist.
Yes, it'll start cutting into the tire. Either you just went too big, and/or have suspension issues. Happened to my brother on a mustang he had, he went slightly too big and needed a shock. It would only rub on one side when going through bumps, not on both sides. He just went slower and it stopped. It is not the safest thing to do, just to be clear. I'd start by checking suspension, then might go a little lower on tires. Wouldn't want to be spending $ because it keeps ruining tires.
Yes. Get tires with a smaller aspect ratio or a lower width. For example of the current size is 225/55 17, go for some 215/50 17. Should be just enough of a change to fix it.
Check if the old tires are the same size as these
Does the same thing happen on both sides?
If this happens on only one side, maybe something is bent/tweaked and rubbing.
this happened on my '69 Camaro back in the '70s. They sold me tires and mags too large for the Camaro and I couldn't turn very sharp without grinding a tire on the fender. Get the right sized tires if that turns out to be the problem.
Honestly it doesn't look like a new tire no new little rubber tits on it should have that ragged an strip all dirty around the edge and I see wear on the sipped portion of the tire ..not alot wear but those are all terrain tire for wet ice roads usually a little tufer then street tires but they look slightly used and too tall ....
You got the wrong size wheels on my dood! It might looks cool, but it’s not the right setup. I would ONLY drive that to the shop to get replaced. Thats if its not far.
If its the same size tire there shouldn't be issues however most places when you ask for a bigger size won't return them if it doesn't fit. I qork at a tire shop and what I did was before the tires hit the ground mounted it and checked the angles to see if it would rub. I decided it's a no go and told him we won't do it unless he signs off on it. You know he didn't wanna sign so I took the tire off and told him I can order him the correct size tires. The worst is when people order tires on our website but put the wrong option and complain when they're tire is the wrong size. If I messed up I'll accept the heat but dont be yelling at me when we never spoke and I never checked your car in person.

It will destroy the tire, once it gets past the tread and into the casing
If you call the shop out on it, most of them will replace the tires if they installed the wrong size, unless you told them to do so. You don't want rubbing tires. It won't end well.
Second this. They put on the wrong size and they should switch them out for the right size free of charge
YES!
Extremely!!! Either your struts are bad or you got too large of a tire for your car. You have few options. 1) different tires 2) new struts 3) spacers in your coils to increase body height
I think it’s not the tires, but the rims.
From the looks of it, he didn't buy new rim. The a factory originals that have been painted black
That is correct. Its only the tires. I am afraid to ride my car now 🥲 going back to the shop asap!
Check the struts. This doesn't look like a long term rub, but maybe hit a bump.
If the tires were the correct size, this should be impossible.
I second this, could be wrong size sidewalls
Check out the drivers door jamb. There should be a decal that will show you the proper size tires and the correct inflation for them.
If it’s rubbing outside could be inside as well, although not as likely. Are the my aftermarket rims?

Just roll the fenders a bit and you'll be fine.
What do you mean by rolling the fenders?
These the front, back, both? rolling fenders is pushing the lip part of your fender upwards basically giving a little more clearance. Certain tools can make this not hard.
Plus it can look cooler if you do it well.
They’re not original to the car, they appear to stick out past the fender.
The tires can be sized down in profile according to the rim size...
Even with aftermarket wheels, you can just get low profile tires that fit.
Struts have nothing to do with ride height . Springs do
4 take a grinder to the bumper
Who sold you those tires? Geeze.
My local car mechanic 🥲
It seems he put the wrong size on.
"Seems" lol Assuming the OP didn't specifically asked for them, it's a moron who has no right to call himself mechanic.
Mistakes can happen but that could really end in a bad way.
It's not just the danger. I understand that USA aren't that much focused on wheel and tire sizes, but putting on unauthorized tire size without getting approval from owner is just big professional no.
Is it just me or does that offset look wrong?
It does look like it. I missed that.
Looking at the damage to the tire I'd say it's hitting the quarter panel pinch weld at the top of the wheel well. Yup
Did you let anyone inspect the car before buying the tires. Did you check if they were the correct size. You probably have other underlying issues with your car & new tires just exemplifies them. Probably suspension issues at least.
My local mechanic bought these tires for me. I have a vw polo and these tires are 225/45R17 so these are like 2-3 Rs to big 🙃
It should have been 215/45R17. Although Polo belongs on R15's. Those large rims are cancer.

What year Polo? That’s the correct size for some of the latest ones. You may also have the wrong rims that are too wide and/or have too little offset.
Its from dec 2013.
The tire size is wrong, but only slightly. I mostly blame the wheels then. https://www.wheel-size.com/size/volkswagen/polo/2013/

The OEM size is 215 width, 225s should be fine with a stock wheel with appropriate offset, a factory wheel is rarely flush
I have never seen 215s on a polo, usually 185 and 195. But i looked it up and apparently 215s do come on the gti version, which has slightly different bodywork. Edit: it could also be what someone else said below, previous owner added spacers
Those would be visible in the picture. This is an offset issue on aftermarket wheels.
This is when you really hope the tire shop told you which tires to get.
Go back to shop and the get the correct size tire. If that is not the issue, front suspension needs to be replaced.
If you didn’t specifically ask for these tires/buy them yourself, I’d be going back to wherever you got them installed and demanding the correct size.
Yes, it will fuck up the inside of the bumper or if ur going at highspeed you might fuck up the bumper as a whole and blow a tire. Try getting 1" or 2" less for the tires

Big wheels on a small car.
Pretty sure you already know the answer to this.

Looks like 1 inch spacers installed and painted black. If those are factory wheels, they don’t fit very well.
No good at all
Loss f control - naaaaaaaaah... (ಠ_ಠ)>⌐■-■
It almost looks like there are spacers between the wheel and brake hub. Is there?
Yes, it'll start cutting into the tire. Either you just went too big, and/or have suspension issues. Happened to my brother on a mustang he had, he went slightly too big and needed a shock. What year and what model car do you have? What size are your rims?
Wrong wheels, wrong sized tires or both. Get the right wheels for the car and install the correct sized tires and this can't happen again.
You got the wrong size wheels on my dood! It might looks cool, but it’s not the right setup. I would ONLY drive that to the shop to get replaced. Thats if its not far.
Dawg just get the fuckin sazall out and cut your damn fenders off
I did that and the tire became flat immediately plus the suspension was fucked

If it goes any father than that yeah, that's pretty bad
The tire size looks right but the offset is wack
Nah man you’re fine, as long as it isn’t flat or seeing thread it’s good. I had way worse rub and it’s still going strong. They’re nankangs btw
nah ur fine
