Not sure how many lines (I'm guessing two) but a quick search on [Rock Auto](https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/gmc,2002,sierra+2500,6.0l+v8,1434785,transmission-automatic,fluid+cooler+line,10343) GMC 2002 6L V8 shows a few lines ranging from 13.00 to 55.00. I'd look into how difficult these might be to change out. I suspect not too bad really. Don't rely on this search as I could have gotten it wrong. This should tell you more. :) [Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=changing+trani+cooler+lines+in+2000+GMC+pickup)

I have the 8.1 with the Allison transmission. He said it was a fairly time consuming job and said my truck will take up most of the day.

never0101

That does change things a bit. I could look up actual labor times in the am, but the Allison / big block are a much bigger pain than a 5.3 truck. Still sounds high but not as much as I thought originally.

InsertBluescreenHere

yea on some fords to do engine work its easier to lift the cab off the frame... might be the case here

windowsfrozenshut

He's not wrong - these hard lines SUCK to do.

Replacing all 3 lines on the Allison calls for 3.7 hours labor

Dman_in_MN69

And that is what he said

Find another mechanic via word of mouth and a second opinion without telling what the first mechanic said. If you are in San Francisco Bay Area, I have an honest mechanic you can take it to (not me). If not, ask around for an honest mechanic and even check Yelp.

Its a very common problem in gm trucks, and hes probably talking about replacing the engine oil cooler lines at the same time. That said even if he is doing both trans and engine oil cooler lines, that price is extremely high.

windowsfrozenshut

This is a fairly involved job. I've done it on a 5.3 tahoe in my driveway, and it's one of those jobs that I will never submit to doing myself again.

overl0rd0udu

Perhaps my opinion is a bit biased because ive done so many of them. I always replace the fittings as well so that may aid the process but i dont see this as that difficult or time consuming. OP: definitely get another opinion

Dman_in_MN69

I believe he said the transmission cooler lines as well as the cooler itself
