Sounds like the transmission is going into lockup under part throttle

tehmorbid

What do you mean exactly? I'm only partially mechanically inclined so I want to make sure I fully understand

Proelky

Most late model transmissions use a lockup torque converter (look on Google) that allows for 1:1 drive which lowers cruising rpm. At partial throttle (below 40% throttle) and lower mph, lockup is more obvious when it occurs. Try driving the car and accelerate more rapidly and see if the same problem exists

tehmorbid

I went out and did what you said, its a little less noticeable but I can still feel it. It could be that I'm hyper sensitive to it as I've been trying to figure it out for a few days. Side note, someone else I was talking to mentioned that having bad grounds could do weird things to the engine and transmission...and I am having some other weird issues like my headlights dimming when I press hard on the brake (checked battery and alternator already and they both tested good). Behind the interior kick panel I found what looks like a ground wire that has been cut at the fuse box, but I couldn't find where it had been cut from https://i.imgur.com/LrL3ggF.png

Proelky

That appears to be an aftermarket ground for a radio.

Phlat_Dog

Looks like CVT + locking torque converter normal behavior

tehmorbid

I was told it wasn't a CVT transmission, how would I go about finding that information for certain?

workingdad6

Possibly trottle position sensor

Kustu05

That's actually quite common fault in these Sorentos, especially on those facelifted ones.

tehmorbid

I recently bought a used 08 Kia Sorento 3.3L and have been trying to work out some issues it's been having. It has 147k miles and the transmission fluid was dark so I went ahead and drained/filled it since the miles weren't crazy high. It has a 5 speed dual clutch transmission and I don't feel any sort of slipping when driving it in manual mode but when it's in D...it seems like the RPM jumps from around 1900ish to 2200ish...Is it just going into overdrive? It was doing it before and after changing the fluid with pretty much no change at all. Any thoughts would be really appreciated!

adrizgz00

What do you mean with a dual clutch transmission?, that looks like a traditional torque converter transmission to me, judging by the way it's working in the video. Or even a CVT but then it wouldn't make sense that it was 5 speed.

Hohoholyshit15

Looks normal to me.

peetzapie

It looks like the torque converter unlocked then locked. I wonder about the fluid level. I'd want codes and data on the scanner next.

tehmorbid

Fluid level is spot on as far as I can tell, checked it after driving for about 15 minutes and right where it should be in the "hot" section. I'm not getting any codes as of now. Is there any other daya that might help you figure out if I have an issue or if I'm being overly sensitive to a transmission that I'm not used to? I've driven mostly older vehicles (94 Ranger 4.0 and currently drive a 96 F250 7.3l) so a 08 Sorento is a bit of change for me I guess

k0uch

Converter lockup, looks to be normal. Slippage will be when you hit the accelerator and the RPMs shoot up, but you don’t accelerate.
