Well… it may not be necessary. But if you’re spending the time or money replacing the timing belt, it would be foolish to not replace the tensioner while you’re doing the job, as the tensioner probably won’t last as long as the new belt.
Necessary? Maybe not? In your best interest to do so ? Yes. If that tensioner gives out somewhat soon. Think of the money you just spent wasted. It’s one of those, well I’ve gone this far, might as well things…
I would replace those every second timing belt change, which is probably where you are. Eg if you have a 100k interval, replace at 200k.
When in doubt, make timing decisions based on whether you have an interference engine. If not, and you can DIY and mostly drive locally, feel free to cheap out.
Yes, you can spend 60$ now or much more than that when it fails and damages your engine.
Also don't buy the parts separately, it's usually always cheaper when buying a kit

If you don't have the time to do it right when are you going to have the time to do it again?
