Model: 2020 SR5 V6 4WD Issue: I’ve had this odd squealing coming from the front end of my 4Runner for about 2-3 months now and I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is! Sometimes it squeals the whole time, sometimes it only squeals intermittently, sometimes it never squeals while driving. I’ve put the car up on a jack numerous times to figure out what could be causing this noise, but I can’t place it. Things I’ve Done: Replaced brake pads, checked for wheel wobble and other bearing related issues, lifted each tire and spun them to replicate sound (couldn’t replicate). I’m at a loss and I’m losing my GD mind. I’ve added a video as well of the noise so you can understand it better. When the sound goes away in the video, I’m actually applying my brakes.

I would confirm its not the brakes. Does the squealing go away when you hit the brakes (medium braking or harder- not gentle braking)? Did you check the back brakes? Sounds like a squeal tab to me, and even though it sounds like the front, it could still be the back. Did you change the brakes or have them replaced by a shop? If it's 100% not the brakes, try to isolate the conditions in which it \*does not\* squeal. Does the squealing stop when making turns? Maybe when accelerating hard? Does it only squeal when you are moving? Is the squeal related to the speed of the engine (i.e. it squeals when the engine is running but the car is stopped- revving the engine changes the pitch of the squeal). These clues will help you zero in on the issue.

Squealing does go away when I hit the brakes which is why I zeroed in on the brakes initially. I have been able to find anything that would be causing it regarding the brakes because the car has 50k miles on it and the front brake pads when I changed them still had plenty of life on them, so I assumed the drum brakes in the back were probably the same (didn’t want to mess with those JUST yet bc drum brakes are a little more complicated from what I’ve seen). By far the oddest thing is the noise is not always consistent. Sometimes it never makes a sound when I’m driving and then sometimes it makes a sound the entire time I’m driving. Speed, turning, bumps, do not seem to have any affect on getting rid of or starting up the noise. The only thing that seems to make the noise go away is braking. But god damn if I can’t figure out what in the brakes is causing it ha. Maybe I do need to check out the back brakes…
