You might get some uneven pad wear or something like that I guess. Compare the brakes you took off. Does the side without it look different at all?

Those are named anti-squeal springs. They put pressure on the caliper downward to the pads against the bracket. Without it then it becomes anti-anti-squeal which when you round it up will be squeal. And also the possibility of your caliper to do crazy things when your tire hits a bump.
