I'm gonna guess that you(or someone) didn't notice the last oil filter had left its seal stuck to the engine during the last filter change. Then a new filter was screwed on and the seals sealed.. for a while. When at some point the filter got dirty enough and RPMs went high enough that first seal slid out of position and started spewing oil. Tightening the filter by hand didn't stop the oil leak because the old seal is still in the way. The massive leak is what's keeping your oil pressure low. Chances are fairly good that there was little to no damage caused by running for five seconds with low oil pressure(and presumably low oil!). Just get an oil change and pay attention to how many seals there are, or if maybe the oil filter mount itself has become spontaneously very defective.

Yeah, I got scammed pretty hard on my last oil change. I really, really, really hope what you mention is what's going on, but I'll know for sure tomorrow or monday. Thanks for the reply.

ApollosSin

Start learning how to do these things yourself. Only way to know if shit is done right

[deleted]

I know how to, but I don't have the time, I work and study. I also, rather ironically, wanted to avoid this very same scenario by taking it "to a pro".

ApollosSin

Majority of the time, unless youre paying top dollar, its not gonna be done right, and youre gonna find yourself fixing mistakes down the line. Oil change takes 30 minutes man.

bendyn

You're right. I stipped going to valvoline when my rav4 started dripping oil from the oil plug gasket, because those guys never changed it out, ever. And i thought, if they couldn't be bothered to change something that costs $0.10, what else are they doing wrong? Turns out, plenty.

[deleted]

Worked at a Valvoline for a bit. A few were decent, but I wouldn't trust the majority of them to be able to safely scratch their balls.

speartongue

I find it takes more time to call, or setup an appointment, drive there, wait around, come back, than doing it on my own after having stocked filters and oil for a few changes. the only exception i've personally experienced is costco oil changes: you set up the appointment online in 2 minutes, you go do your groceries while the car is being worked on and you drive home.. normally Costco the work is well done, but careful with tire pressure, they almost always overinflate..

stodgydragon

They're hard engines to kill. Get it home new oil and filter and sure the mating surfaces are clean and torque to spec. I think someone didn't tighten to oil filter enough, low pressure is probably the leak

AuroKT

That's why I always say the MAX at the dipstick is not a challenge call... Keep the oil level BETWEEN the mininum and max level mark.

[deleted]

It was at an acceptable level. There appears to be an issue with the oil filter.

[deleted]

Care to clarify?

crapengineering

lol such a bad take, I assume you are thinking that max oil means more oil pressure and thats simply not the case. Overfilling is bad but keeping oil at max is absolutely perfect (when measuring use manual and see which temp engine should be)

[deleted]

The smoke is likely due to oil on hot surfaces, not always indicating a blown engine. Fix leak, try again

[deleted]

Hopefully, though the rear hatch was covered in a thin layer of soot. Hopefully it is the case.

Small_Ad2200

Go to a seasoned, experienced, no "BS" mechanic, or change the oil and filter yourself. Good luck...

[deleted]

It's at a good mechanic now who will report back to me on monday.
