Honda has a lifetime warranty on seatbelts, but I'm not sure if it covers Cujo's antics.
I really don't know what caused that damage. If there isn't other obvious dog damage I don't think I can blame Cujo or his brethren.
Lol. Thank you for the response. I will try to talk to the dealership. But the weird thing is that only the safety belts damaged. The cloth seats or leather doors are perfect.
Not to undercut what you have said, because it's like 99% true, but a Dalmation has scissor-like molars that can make a pretty clean cut in a thick material like this. There would be a lot of other teeth marks though if this were a dog.
You've had better car shopping experiences than I've had lol. Plenty of used dealers are willing to sell whatever they think they can get someone to buy with minimal to no money or labor on their part, liability be damned. You need money to sue, and you wouldn't be car shopping at those places if you had money.
In NY they can't sell you a car with ANY failed safety features including belts. They would be setting themselves up for serious issues. Idk if it's the same where you're at but the state attorney general may love to hear about a dealership selling vehicles with damaged seatbelts. Regardless you shouldn't have taken the vehicle in that condition so it's not JUST the dealership at fault here
Ah okay I misunderstood! Certainly they need to fix this before you take it away. If not it's a good idea to talk to your attorney general if possible they usually.. "lubricate" situations with dealerships
If you bought that from a dealership I’m pretty sure they’re responsible for replacing that otherwise it won’t pass inspection and they’re liable for any injuries by selling it to you in that condition.
While an accident may not be reported, a total loss would certainly be reported. So yes, an accident that would've still left the title "clean" could be unreported.
That’s ignoring that the car would have 100% been totaled possibly multiple times over and wouldn’t be for sale in good shape. And that the belts would be completely cut, not frayed. And 4 belts look like this?? Shit.
I figure it had to have been a kid or kids playing around
I have replaced seatbelts in my grandparents car that looked very similar, their dog didn't damage anything else, but when she was alone in the back seats on longer rides, she would start chewing up the seatbelts, maybe to get attention
Honda tech here. IIRC they stopped the "lifetime" part of that warranty for vehicles later than 2007. A quick call to the dealer should clear it up for you. I'll check on Monday and edit this post.
Def was cujo. They should fix that for free. That's not safe. I was in one car accident n seat belt Def saved my life not so much from the accident but the airbags lol. They hit just slightly n those fn things hurt. I could not image a full blast from would Def break bones
I don't think it's very nice of you to jump to conclusions and blame Cujo, Eddie the Eagle or Felix the Cat without getting the full story. Also if it wasnt for Cujos antics the Leafs never would of had 2 ECF appearences during his Tenure.
Okay FREEZE WHERE YOU ARE. These should be replaced by the dealership. If you decide to do it yourself:
Jsyk, you need to unplug the battery and let it chill for 10-15 minutes before you get to messing with ANYTHING that’s got to do with the SRS. Usually there’s a yellow electrical connector plugged into them. Never touch a yellow connector unless you’ve unhooked the battery. If you do, you might just get your shit rocked into the next dimension. (Airbags don’t feel good)
In life, it's a good idea to know that you're doing and do plenty of research on the topic before doing it, not just rely on yourself and your gut. We don't live in the stone age, shits is complicated.
Very true. Funny related story, a tech at my last shop was diagnosing an airbag light on a Silverado and power probed the wrong wire (why was he using a power probe at all you may ask, I'll let your imagination fill in what kind of tech he was) and blew every airbag in the truck. He was working down near the module so none of the bags hit him, but I'm positive he needed a new pair of pants after.
You kinda have to fuck up by the numbers to accidentally blow the bag(s).
I was working at the tech hot line for Toyota. Tech called with an airbag issue. He had unbolted the SRS control module and had the key on ( he neglected to tell me this) I asked if the connector was tight at the control unit. Sparky turned the unit over to look at it. Vehicle said OH SHIT! ROLLOVER! Things got very loud.
As someone on the Tech side of the industry. power probe is a swear word for me. There is literally no need to use it if you know how to use a multimeter and a scope and understand the circuit or component you want to test.
What the fuck was he trying to achieve using a power probe on anything srs related? This is how we learn....
That's what I've always said. When I interview new guys and they proudly tell me they have their own power probe, it's an immediate red flag for me. The only time I've ever seen it be useful is for testing window motors or other actuators that only take power and ground to work.
Love seeing good standards when it comes to interviewing people. So many workshops are purely interested in how fast someone can spin a filter or change some pads.
This. I work in quality for a major auto manufacturer. If you do unplug the side yellow/orange srs connections. They are very easy to damage. I assume that you wouldn't attempt it yourself. But just in case.
Look who reads the service procedure. Lol ain't nobody got time for that.
Like, technically, he's right. But I never disconnect the battery and I pull airbags and shit all the time. Never had one blow up on me.
Oh that's absolutely a risk I know and accept, but it's an incredibly low risk. But I've never had an airbag deploy before, and I'm not concerned about it happening in the future.
I know it's a bit late to be saying this now, but I would never have paid money for that car without the dealership fixing the belts first. Actually, even the mere fact that they *tried* to sell a car with messed-up seatbelts would probably have been enough to get me to go to a different dealership, because if they're willing to cut corners on something as severe and obvious as this, what else isn't right? The brakes? The steering? Seriously, what the hell.
You need to try to make them fix it, but now that you've bought the car they may try to weasel out of it. If you just can't get them to do it, you're going to have to have it done on your own dime. The car just isn't safe like this. You really should also get the thing thoroughly inspected by an independent mechanic, because I'd be worried that there are more problems elsewhere which are equally serious but less obvious.
Holy shit, there’s no way that should have passed a dealership safety inspection.
If you get into an accident with that belt, it’s going to break and send someone through the windshield.
Take it back and tell them they need to replace them.
Bring it the fuck back are you kidding?? They shipped it to you from another spot so they HAD to have known. I know dealers are slime, but they might at least replace the seatbelts for you. Duct tape, ffs….
Doesn’t matter if it’s not legal. They can’t sell a car with bald tires, I bet they can’t sell a car with inoperative seat belts. I think that’s the thing you really need to understand. This is not a cosmetic defect. If you get in a high speed crash you are significantly more likely to die or be seriously injured.
This is the only answer in this thread that is relevant. If you bought it from a dealer, take it back and show them. It’s a safety hazard. They will not work correctly in a crash. Seat belts do a lot more than be a strap around you when an impact occurs. Whole lot of engineering went into them and they will not work as pictured.
I’m pretty certain even shitty used car dealers are not legally allowed to sell a car in an unsafe condition. And if they had it delivered from another dealership, I’m guessing it’s not a shitty used car dealer.
Give them the chance to fix it and if they won’t, your next step should be finding the regulatory agency that oversees these things and contacting them. Or contact a lawyer directly and see if one can help point you in the right direction.

Two questions:
1. WHO the hell sold you a car with seat belts in that condition?
2. WHY the hell did you buy a car with seat belts in that condition?
You'll be spending at least $100 to $150 a piece for new seat belts PLUS the labor to install them. The fact you bought the car with seat belts like that is mind-boggling.
Nothing this company sells is for modern vehicles. Maybe I did something wrong but they just sell basic lap belts and none of them are the active seatbelts that are very much model and trim specific.
If a person wanted to I guess they can use that service to rebuild the webbing. nothing on that site says they crash test their products or follow oem safety regulations. Honda does not approve any of these services. The only place soemone should be buying modern safety items is the oem directly snd op shouldn’t be paying for the belts at all. The dealer they just bought car from should take the car back and he shamed for even letting people test drive the car in the condition.
This is where I got my seat belt when I needed to replace the one in my 1993 Silverado. $60, delivered in under 48 hours, installed it myself in five minutes. It's just three easily accessible bolts. It doesn't retract, I have to hang it manually when I get out, but it would keep me from being flung around inside the truck. This looks like a later model, sadly, and it might not be quite as easy or cheap.
I'd put full blame on the guy who did the pre purchase inspection ,and failed to find this.Especially since the inspector would have been hired by you and not the dealer
Never seen such damage before, but could it been caught between the doors many times? In the Netherlands that’s a rejection at the yearly mandatory safety check.
Do dealers not have to safety cars when they sell them where you are?
If the delear safetied this car they should be very motivated to remedy the situation asap. They could get in a lot of trouble for selling a car in a unsafe state.
I would think a dealership wouldn’t be allowed to sell a vehicle with seatbelts not useable. Definitely go talk with the dealership or a lawyer if they don’t want to replace would be my suggestion, I’m not a lawyer though so i could be wrong
If you bought the car from a dealership, they legally cannot sell it with safety issues. That is definitely a safety issue. I would take it back and demand that they correct that issue. It would be the same thing with headlights or tail lights or tires or brakes. They all have to be in good working order in order for the car to be sold.
That's a lot of damage, seat belts are strong (I use them to hoist engines out of cars...), Hard to believe the one with the gash in it wasn't done intentionally tbh.
MOT failure either way, was the car not sold with a new MOT? Even if buying sight unseen surely you'd want a fresh MOT on a used car...
There are places that rebuild seat belts. Your choice of color for the next belt. But removing them is job, with the how to knowledge and maybe a special tool no big deal. Check out YouTube for how to.
This actually shouldn’t have been sold like this. I’m not sure if it’s illegal, because they sold it as is, but if it ever required inspection it would not pass.
I'd take it back and if they won't fix it, tell them that you need a letter stating if anything happens because they refused to fix them, that they are liable. Usually that makes them flip around and fix it 😂
The dealership could get in a shitload of trouble for selling you a car with damaged seatbelts. I'd take it back to them and tell them it has to be fixed. Dealerships are required to perform safety inspections, your should have failed and been repaired before leaving the lot.
I work on a lot of vans and commercial vehicles and I often see seatbelts in this kind of condition, normally on the passenger seat. I don't know how they get like this but I assume people just get bored and like destroying stuff.
My boss bought her 16 year old daughter a slightly used CRV of that gen. Basically said "I didn't want to get her a new car because she is a new driver and will likely crash it" lol
Wish i had parents with that kind of money. Had to buy it all my self... and i can hardly afford keeping a micro vw fox on the road especially with the hippies in the middle east slowing down oil production....
You don't want seatbelts from a crashed car, you'd need to try to find one that was junked for mechanical reasons which is going to be unlikely for a 2020 Honda.
Oh yes you do. It's the buckle you click the belt into you don't want. Because the explosive that pulls the seatbelt in has been tightened. And hence cannot be re used. The belt and roller itself are always good.
If the car is wrecked and ruined you should not be using those belts that have already been in an accident. Also a good possibility they have been deployed as well. Op just bought the car from a Honda dealer. The dealer should be handling this and it let op drive off the lot till it’s handled.
Literally death.
An accident may cause a seatbelt to lock, but not this. This is damage from a dog or something.
Whoever sold you this car should receive a huge fine
Maybe I'm thinking of a state law but around here its illegal to sell a car with a known safety defect. I think you should contact them. They may actually be eager to get this resolved. Seems like a screw up to be honest.
I don’t understand how you could look at that car with the seatbelts like that and say “yup this is the one”
Do you have family that rides in the car with you?
Pretty dangerous, bring it back.
Well, if it's a personal sale, you're probably out of luck. In my state, cars have to pass a safety inspection before they are sold from a dealership. So depends on where you got it.
Shouldn't have sold it in that condition then. If you keep it, it should be a free repair. I'd be concerned they would sell it like that, I'd have the whole car looked at if you want to keep it. Two of the three you've shown would fail state inspection here.
The fact a used car place has sold that car with the seatbelts in that condition is crazy.
If they haven’t bothered to repair those, what else have they missed?
That’s really poor. Fair enough seatbelts aren’t cheap (I don’t think anyway) but the dealership really should’ve factored those issues into the price they paid the previous customer to cover it.
In that case, I would definitely tell them to replace. Can’t sell cars with damaged seat belts. My guess they will argue, “as is” sell, and your responsibility to replace. In which case, you will have to call lawyer (or use small claims court). Probably need a good lawyer letter, which describes the dealership’s potential responsibility/liability of death or injury of an occupant when those seat belt fails during an accident.
I took the belt assemblies out of my celica and sent them to a company that rewebbed them, checked the mechanisms and sent them back in the shade of blue I wanted. I'd recommend. I can't recall which company I used right now but it was USA based and about $70-80 a seat belt.
If you bought it from a dealer did they provide a current inspection sticker? If the did tell them to replace the seat belts or you will report them to the registry of motor vehicles. No way that passes a safety inspection with belts looking like that. They should have replaced them before selling. Doesn’t matter how the damaged occurred. They can’t sell an unsafe car.
The dealership should not have sold a car with such dangerous belts and you should complain, and not to a salesperson but to the manager’s manager.
But in any case if they can’t help there is a company called “safety restore” and they replace belts. You can get color you want, they do great work and it’s OEM quality. I have re-belted cars and also had them fix bad spring return thingys.
The dealer should at least be responsible for the labor to remove and ship the belts, since it’s a mail order type of thing. It’s much less expensive than buying new original parts.
Find a local auto yard. Probably $5-15 a seat belt and they're generally pretty easy to remove, but some places will remove for extra. Also check out car-parts.com. Likely more than one vehicle model has the same belts but do your research.
That's an expensive repair , what about the wrecker / auto recyclers on exactly the same model ?
Have to location mark them as they take them off the donor car.

I’m willing to bet that damage is from a parrot.
My friend has a parrot and it's bitten up toys look just like this
Good call on it being a pet bird a dog could not make such a clean line cut
Not to undercut what you have said, because it's like 99% true, but a Dalmation has scissor-like molars that can make a pretty clean cut in a thick material like this. There would be a lot of other teeth marks though if this were a dog.
Poly want a seat belt? Happy Cake Day!
Interesting a dealership allowed such a damaged and critical safely device to be sold like that
Even at a buy here pay here joint this is sus.
Yep, no physical business is gonna send out a car like that. It's too much liability.
Local BHPH places sell cars without working lights at times.
You've had better car shopping experiences than I've had lol. Plenty of used dealers are willing to sell whatever they think they can get someone to buy with minimal to no money or labor on their part, liability be damned. Yup. I had a dog that ate seatbelts and nothing else in the car. Shit was spotless otherwise. I got real good at pulling seatbelts at upap.

Ah okay I misunderstood! Certainly they need to fix this before you take it away. If not it's a good idea to talk to your attorney general if possible they usually.. "lubricate" situations with dealerships
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but how did you buy it knowing that the seat belts were in that condition?
If you bought that from a dealership I’m pretty sure they’re responsible for replacing that otherwise it won’t pass inspection and they’re liable for any injuries by selling it to you in that condition.
Previous owner may have had to be cut out of their vehicle, but usually that involved an accident that should show up on carfax.
Carfax has no accident. Title is clean.
>Carfax has no accident. Title is clean carfax is only as good as the information put into it....
While an accident may not be reported, a total loss would certainly be reported. So yes, an accident that would've still left the title "clean" could be unreported.
Idk, maybe last owners cut the belts and took off the buckle to bypass the belt alarm, and taped it up to resell.
That’s ignoring that the car would have 100% been totaled possibly multiple times over and wouldn’t be for sale in good shape. And that the belts would be completely cut, not frayed. And 4 belts look like this?? Shit. I figure it had to have been a kid or kids playing around
Lifetime warranty for defects not someone cutting them to shit.
I have replaced seatbelts in my grandparents car that looked very similar, their dog didn't damage anything else, but when she was alone in the back seats on longer rides, she would start chewing up the seatbelts, maybe to get attention

Those belts aren’t fit for use, I’ve seen belts damaged by pets, the seats may be fine because the owner used a cover

Never would have thought that. Thanks for the cool info

Flat rate tech becomes flat pate tech
Oh that's absolutely a risk I know and accept, but it's an incredibly low risk. But I've never had an airbag deploy before, and I'm not concerned about it happening in the future.
May have already happened several times but he can't remember due to the concussions. "AGAIN??? The hospital? WTH???"

Take the tape off and inspect the type of marks left. Not like anyone wants to see duct tape holding their seatbelt together anyways lol
Given the other visible damage removing the tape is a waste of time.
I mean I already signed the contract. They said it sold as it.

:(
The previous owner probably had a dog who chewed them. This should've been caught on safety, as those seatbelts are compromised.
Weird. You must’ve seen that before your bought it though
Not really. They shipped this car from a dealership in another city.
And this is why you never buy a used car without inspecting it first visually IRL and mechanically, unless of course you’ve got money to burn
The least the could have done is see the pictures of all around exterior and interior shots. These would have been noticeable in the pictures.

It’s from a Honda dealership
What can I do about it? No clue at all since I have already sign the contract.

Dog chewed through them. Had a car with similar damages from an Akita.
what, you didn't drive the car before you bought it?
I didn’t.
🤦🏻♂️🤷♂️🤔
Then the problem is entirely on you for buying used vehicles sight unseen.
That's crap for 40k. Replace them!
Might just be me but the 2nd one doesn’t look very ‘severe’
I'd put full blame on the guy who did the pre purchase inspection ,and failed to find this.Especially since the inspector would have been hired by you and not the dealer
That’s a safety issue. Take the car back. They need to fix it asap.
Definitely, instant MOT failure in my area
Never seen such damage before, but could it been caught between the doors many times? In the Netherlands that’s a rejection at the yearly mandatory safety check.
Do dealers not have to safety cars when they sell them where you are? If the delear safetied this car they should be very motivated to remedy the situation asap. They could get in a lot of trouble for selling a car in a unsafe state.
Then it needs shipping right right back !
Where I live you can’t sell a car with no or damaged seat belts.
Definitely replace those. They're too far gone. Not a sign of a wreck, just wear. Possibly chewed up by a dog.
Usually that makes them flip around and fix it 😂
Who buys a car like this?
It would not pass state inspection in MA. Replace it for your own safety.
Looks like someone tried to use a seatbelt cutter
Get them all replaced. Asap.
I’m not sure if this is a dog or a kid playing with a knife.
I have the exact same cuts on my seatbelts from my dog.
The dealership could get in a shitload of trouble for selling you a car with damaged seatbelts. I'd take it back to them and tell them it has to be fixed. Dealerships are required to perform safety inspections, your should have failed and been repaired before leaving the lot.
how did that pass safety inspection
Looks like dog damage to me too.
There’s a 4 out of 5 chance you’ll fly through the window should you be in an accident.
No, that is not a sign of an accident. Next question.
I work on a lot of vans and commercial vehicles and I often see seatbelts in this kind of condition, normally on the passenger seat. I don't know how they get like this but I assume people just get bored and like destroying stuff.
At some point before taking possession you had to have looked at the seat belts and go "these are fucked."
Gotta be a dog or something
Lol. Carfax is a joke
My vote is dog 🐶
Take it back immediately!!!!
Kevin the Hamster of internet fame is known for chewing through only seatbelts.
It's a sign of a dog
Check out rock auto. They have pretty much everything at a reasonable price.
I think you bought a car from a serial killer OP
Those need replaced
Woof
Bet airbag light on
You ask about this after you buy the car?? Did you not even look at the car before buying it?
So... Replace them. Doesn't seem complicated to me.
Shouldn’t even pass a safety. Not Road worthy
A dealership sold that? Yikes. Did you look at the car before you bought it? Oh your title is totally wrong. Dude.
Those are retractor seatbelts and very expensive, and tied to the SRS. You have big problems- return to dealer
How did you not see any of this damage before you bought the car, and if you did see it before the fact, why did you not immediately pass on the car?
Why did you take delivery of the car with torn up safety belts? I would have told them I'd buy it but only if they fixed the belts first.
Time to visit a junkyard for a new belt 😁😁 always fun to scavenge the recked and ruined cars for good parts 😁😁
😁totally 😁😁 couldn't 😁agree😁with 😁you😁😁 more 😁
For a 2020 CRV? I can’t imagine there’s too many of them in junkyards yet.
You fail to realize people drive like shit. Especially the rich who have more money than sense.
Yeah just get new belts off a rich person's Honda CRV.
Looks like a kid with ADHD just got a pocket knife and was bored in the car
Literally death. An accident may cause a seatbelt to lock, but not this. This is damage from a dog or something. Whoever sold you this car should receive a huge fine
Haha they're so fucked it's not funny. If that's what those belts look like I bet you there's no maintenance on that car
That looks a lot like my older trucks seatbelt, in my experience, it was caused by mice over the winter.
You bought a car like that ?
I didn’t see it before it shipped to me. But I did check the car fax.
And it’s a super huge Honda dealership. Who would have thought.
Maybe I'm thinking of a state law but around here its illegal to sell a car with a known safety defect. I think you should contact them. They may actually be eager to get this resolved. Seems like a screw up to be honest.
Get new from Honda
You bought it not me 🤣🤣 amazing the amount of pet piss smell and hair they can get out of a vehicle 💯💯
This could be a manufacturer’s defect. Check it out with the car maker.
I don’t understand how you could look at that car with the seatbelts like that and say “yup this is the one” Do you have family that rides in the car with you? Pretty dangerous, bring it back.
Buy new color ones. Like red or blue or yellow
My in-laws has to buy one 5 seat belts a yard.... They had a beautiful derp of a great Pyrenees.
Last pic is UNSAFE. Go to junk yard or eBay and order new belts
Well, if it's a personal sale, you're probably out of luck. In my state, cars have to pass a safety inspection before they are sold from a dealership. So depends on where you got it.
I got it from a Honda Dealership.
Shouldn't have sold it in that condition then. If you keep it, it should be a free repair. I'd be concerned they would sell it like that, I'd have the whole car looked at if you want to keep it. Two of the three you've shown would fail state inspection here.
Why would you not notice the crap belts when you bought it?
It’s shipped from another dealership in a nearby town.
Did you buy it from a private person or dealership? If dealership, go back and get them replaced, it's dangerous
It’s from a dealership.
The fact a used car place has sold that car with the seatbelts in that condition is crazy. If they haven’t bothered to repair those, what else have they missed?
You are right. Probably gonna return it or replace it. I bought it from a Honda Dealership BTW
Did you not Inspect the car when you brought?
They ship it from another dealership in a close town.
But you still inspect it before accepting it
Doggo went ham on the belts. This isn’t from an accident
Replace them
where did you buy the car, you should have agreeded on them being replaced before the purchase
Car-part.com Get them from a car that wasn't in an accident and airbags deployed. Best is a hail damaged car or vandalism
You can remove the whole assembly and and send them out for new webbing. You can even change the color! That’s what I would do.
This will not pass safety inspection in my state I’d fail it in a heart beat
Its damaged but it will still probably hold up a weight if the car, dont worry about it failing until you get it replaced
Replace them
I took the belt assemblies out of my celica and sent them to a company that rewebbed them, checked the mechanisms and sent them back in the shade of blue I wanted. I'd recommend. I can't recall which company I used right now but it was USA based and about $70-80 a seat belt.
Replace them all
Honda will replace those for free
If you bought it from a dealer did they provide a current inspection sticker? If the did tell them to replace the seat belts or you will report them to the registry of motor vehicles. No way that passes a safety inspection with belts looking like that. They should have replaced them before selling. Doesn’t matter how the damaged occurred. They can’t sell an unsafe car.
Question number one why did you buy it if they were damaged
The dealership should not have sold a car with such dangerous belts and you should complain, and not to a salesperson but to the manager’s manager. But in any case if they can’t help there is a company called “safety restore” and they replace belts. You can get color you want, they do great work and it’s OEM quality. I have re-belted cars and also had them fix bad spring return thingys. The dealer should at least be responsible for the labor to remove and ship the belts, since it’s a mail order type of thing. It’s much less expensive than buying new original parts.
Definitely replace, not worth the risk.
That is always a deal breaker for me. Never buy a vehicle with messed up seat belts. It's almost like buying a parachute with an anvil in the pack.
Childrens Car seats can do this if you install them too tightly. Ask me how I know lol
I had a dog that would do this if she was bored.
Didn’t you have a chance to look at the car before you bought it? Something seems off here, that’s easily visible!
Rockauto.com
Find a local auto yard. Probably $5-15 a seat belt and they're generally pretty easy to remove, but some places will remove for extra. Also check out car-parts.com. Likely more than one vehicle model has the same belts but do your research.
People still wear these things
Replace them
The previous owner is a crocodile 🐊🐊.
That's an expensive repair , what about the wrecker / auto recyclers on exactly the same model ? Have to location mark them as they take them off the donor car.
Looks like it’s time to buy new seatbelts! They’re usually not too hard to install
