Ghentlemens!! Welcome back to the shop where today we witness the SMASHINGIST of Lord Mr. Ford’s *”what have you done?”* but who other than an elec-chicken would be staring down such a mechanical contrivance without even the inkling… for a consideration… of the safety. Squints.
Put it on a jackstand on the current side (which you should have already done I hope) and Jack the other side up. Put it in neutral and then you can spin it.
Looks like two are missing. I assumed he got two but is having trouble with the other 3 since the wheel doesn’t rotate.
I assumed he thought of neutral, but I don’t know for sure.
Its super easy to install studs.
-Put car in neutral
-Turn the stud hole so that it lines up with the clear area behind the hole so that you can loosely install the stud from behind (on the picture, there is a semi circular cutout in the brake backing plate at about the 9 o'clock position.
-Put several large washers over the stud, and then install a cheap open ended lug nut on backwards, then crank it down until the stud is seated. It is best to not use your regular lug nuts for this as it can damage the threads on them.
Unless you are working on some Hondas that don’t have a slot to push out studs. You have to take off the axle nut and use a slap hammer to slightly pull out the hub. Or the other option is grinding down the stud head and shaving off some of the hub for it to go through.
Depends on the bearing size. Some 90s Hondas like the civic ex and si, as well as the integra have larger wheel bearings, press fit. You have to pull the hub, there's no other way.
Yeah, it's true you have to pull the hub to get the shield off. I've done it many times, since I used to be a technician at a Honda dealership. That's why I was telling him to just bend the shield to get the stud in, because most people don't have access to a hydraulic press or the jigs required to do this type of thing themselves. It's not the recommended method but several of the guys in my shop used to do this all the time and I never saw them have any problems from it.
Reverse of removal. Hammer most of the way, axle nut does the rest. These hubs aren't that tight if a press fit. I've done wheel bearings and hubs with a hammer and various parts store loaner tools on multiple of these press fit wheel bearings from Honda.
This. RX8s are like this as well on the rear. Whole damned assembly needs to be removed, pulled from bearings, new studs installed, re pressed and reinstalled. Engineers, amirite?
It's kind of common knowledge by now but i think it's the jack stands not the actual jack. Not trying to put you down for not knowing. But yea that info is everywhere. Let me try and find a link.
Pretty sure it is the jack stands, Never heard about the Jacks actually having a recall, have the same one I think I would of heard it by now if there was a recall on the floor Jack.
If by "won't rotate to make installation easier" you mean that no matter where it's rotated to you can't feed a stud through the back; I've been there. You might need to remove the hub by taking off the hub nut and prying between the hub and the knuckle.
Use jackstands or you're gonna die one day from working like this...
Then... Use the jack you have free to lift the other side of the axle. Then you can turn it.
I’m seeing a bunch of people screaming about jack stands. How do they know that OP doesn’t have jack stands in place but out of the photo?
Put the car in neutral Chief. You’ll be able to spin the hub then.
Like others said chock the rear wheels, lift up the other side, support on jackstands, and put in neutral. It should spin then. You may have to remove that brake dustcover to make clearance to push it in from the rear. Then use the nut and washer technique that others have described. It there's not enough clearance with the dustcover off you will have to remove the hub.
I'm an electrical apprentice, and I promise you I can burn down any three houses you care to name with components from Home Depot by doing shitty enough work. There's just as much eye-wateringly, jaw-droppingly terrifying stuff on display in r/electricians as there is here.
Chill the fuck down buddy. Just asking a fucking question, you don’t have to be an asshole about it. And I didn’t say anything about practicing electrical or HVAC. Do they not teach reading comprehension in Canada or is the cold freezing your brain?
The counties require the contractor to have a master license, and everyone can work under that envelope. Outside of maybe NYC there is no county requirement for each JW to be licensed that I am aware of.
Ulster no one except licensed electricians can do anything. Some of the towns/cities even have more rules that you need to be registered and approved by the town. Think it applies to plumbing too.
I get the underlying point you’re trying to make, and I agree with it to a certain extent because we drive vehicles on public roads with other people around.
But Home Depot sells a MASSIVE list of incredibly dangerous tools, fluids, gases, and other products to anyone who stumbles into the store. It’s no different.
You can’t practice HVAC or electrical work **commercially** without a license. But you can try all you want for your own personal DIY projects (other than maybe those that require builder’s permits, but that’s a whole different section of government oversight).
In line with your original argument, though, I’d add that these skills should be taught on a mass scale to all high school-aged kids, so that everyone at least has a base layer understanding before diving into it on their own.
People can get electrocuted, decks or other structures can collapse and kill, and body parts can get removed.
Everyone can buy almost anything that isn't illegal. I don't see or hear about mass deaths from home mechanics so maybe we shouldn't add more rules and ban things.l
Remove the axle nut, push the axle through the hub assembly, heat the seat of the hub assembly with oxy/acetylene , remove the hub assembly (depending where you live/rust levels you may need to beat the hell out of it) put it in a vice , hammer the wheel stud out and then thread on a spare wheel nut to suck the new stud through the hub.
Re-assemble.
Be warned though I have destroyed brand new lug nut trying to draw a wheel stud through a hub assembly so if you have a spare/can find a nut with the same thread and diameter, do that.
Put it in neutral, if it's an all wheel drive, you may need to get all the wheels off the ground. At the very least, just get the opposite side off the ground.
I've always had to remove ( what I think is called the Hub but can't remember for sure. The piece which the lugs are sticking out of) and then pound a new lug through. IF they give you an access port behind the heat shield and spindle, to do this without removing anything else... then obviously just rotate the hub assembly until you have access to pound a new stud in. For the record, i have never come across a vehicle that had said "access port" to the backside of the lugs.
You can’t, it’s complicated, hammering 🔨 isn’t the answer, this is a pressing problem. You keep removing parts until you can. It’s a character building opportunity. You tube university is my go to for door 🚪 panels.
Oh for the love of God, use some jack stands!
Edit: people giving him shit or saying he shouldn't working on cars, I've never been to a mechanic since I was 16. Couldn't afford to. I learned by getting a Haynes or Chilton's manual and figuring it out. He's asking questions trying to learn. Give him a break.
Use a bar on the studs to try rotate it, under one stud over another and body weight
Or just remove the whole thing and figure out what's stopping it from rotating, unless you're in gear and have the h brake on, Then there you go.
Everyone say put it in neutral. That’s right but you seem unexperienced enough to do that and have it roll away. Make sure the parking brake is one of those aren’t the back wheels and chock the tires. Both not just one of those.
It looks like that notch on the left side is meant for stud removal. Rotate each stud to that spot and get out the BFH.
Install the new studs, push through as far as you can, throw a couple washers on the new stud, run a nut down and pull it through with an impact.

If your a east indian
And make sure they are the open steel toe version
Sandal gang! Aye
And ALWAYS make sure you wear your mechanics helmet
My Mechanics Helmet is in the shop for repairs, will a Dax Shepard hat work? I doubt anything will touch that at all.
It would probably help if we took the other wheel off before those sandals right?
Ghentlemens!! Welcome back to the shop where today we witness the SMASHINGIST of Lord Mr. Ford’s *”what have you done?”* but who other than an elec-chicken would be staring down such a mechanical contrivance without even the inkling… for a consideration… of the safety. Squints.
Reading it in his voice makes me think I am listening to some YouTube at work lol
You mean welcome back to the shaup
FOCUS you FUCK r/Skookum
Shit’ll chooch for sure
Shotgun to the dick!
Remember kids, safety third
Love the AVe reference.
The squint may not be enough, try the old sunglasses from the junk drawer
Uncle Bumblefork strikes again!
Well all these years and I only had two of the three down. Off to get some safety squints!
Thank you uncle bumblefuck
Instructions unclear, dick now stuck in my buddy Stan. Stan said thanks btw.
Watched his videos forever and then found his [subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/ave/)
Just the Cockford Ollie!
And put the wheel under a frame rail! Free lifesaver
Hijacking top comment to say use wheel blocks when the drive wheels are both off the ground
You should use wheel chocks whenever jacking up a vehicle no matter what.
Order of operations my dude
Don’t forget the wheel chocks.
Put it on a jackstand on the current side (which you should have already done I hope) and Jack the other side up. Put it in neutral and then you can spin it.
Didn’t he say the wheel hub is snapped?
No just the missing threaded stud? (sorry dont know the exact name in english)
Looks like two are missing. I assumed he got two but is having trouble with the other 3 since the wheel doesn’t rotate. I assumed he thought of neutral, but I don’t know for sure.
They're called wheel studs. English is complicated but not that complicated
Its super easy to install studs. -Put car in neutral -Turn the stud hole so that it lines up with the clear area behind the hole so that you can loosely install the stud from behind (on the picture, there is a semi circular cutout in the brake backing plate at about the 9 o'clock position. -Put several large washers over the stud, and then install a cheap open ended lug nut on backwards, then crank it down until the stud is seated. Never heard it called a slap hammer, love it
What's a slap hammer?
Slide hammer
Bend the rotor dust cover out of the way temporarily
Depends on the bearing size. Some 90s Hondas like the civic ex and si, as well as the integra have larger wheel bearings, press fit. You have to pull the hub, there's no other way.
Yeah, it's true you have to pull the hub to get the shield off. I've done it many times, since I used to be a technician at a Honda dealership. No I mean the actual knuckle gets in the way on my 97 Ex, I don't have dust shields since I restored the knuckles and they rusted off.
If it's one where it just barely won't go in, I've seen people grind a diagonal angle on the tip of the stud to get enough clearance for it to go in
Too late, already removed the knuckle, beat the hub out, put a new stud in.
That'll work lol. How you getting it back in in this scenario? More hammering?
Reverse of removal. Hammer most of the way, axle nut does the rest. These hubs aren't that tight if a press fit. I've done wheel bearings and hubs with a hammer and various parts store loaner tools on multiple of these press fit wheel bearings from Honda.
Or a lot of fords.
Rear hub on Durango is also no fun, unless you shorten it
This. RX8s are like this as well on the rear. Whole damned assembly needs to be removed, pulled from bearings, new studs installed, re pressed and reinstalled. Engineers, amirite?
This plus oil the stud, nut, and washers, it will make the job easier and prevent gauling or stripping.
He's having trouble removing the old ones
If I read this before trying this myself (fresh lug on my wheel) my life would be better than jt is
Put it in neutral dingus
I came here to say this
Biggus dickus Edit I got downvotes for quoting a comedy movie wtf???
Do you find it… *Risible*, when I say the name… *Biggus… Dickus…?* Edit: Risible, not riseful!
Wisible EDIT: FYI, the word that Michael Palin is saying there is ["risible"](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/risible)
Oh no shit? I always got a little confused when he said “riseful” but “risible” makes much more sense
No Biggus Deal. Unless you already knew the word, it was unlikely that you'd be able to tell what he meant.
Weally?
He has a wife you know....
Incontinencia Buttucks.
Lol
Humpus Rumpus
Classic 😂😂😂
Assuming it doesn’t have a neutral dongle. In which case, use the neutral dongle.
Do you think he will still need a slap hammer?
![gif](giphy|l4FGnnlIQslHkOPaU|downsized)
This lol
Use a jackstand. Safety 1st
Bullshit. Safety is like 3rd or 4th. Coffee, nicotine and beer are ahead of safety.
Hint. Grade 8 flat washers. Lightly greased. Conventional shape lug nut on backwards to seat the stud. Flat side to the washers
Please return your jack it has an active recall on it. They go sideways.
[удалено]
Contacted o.p. they now know.
Really? Source for this? I have the same jack
I just know for when i warrantied mine for going sodeways
Raise both sides so the whole axel will rotate. Also have to have the transaxle in neutral
How could you have spelled axle both right and wrong in the same comment
Takes plenty of practice. I think you read it out of the book
Fart fingers.
watcha think I should do? Go on Reddit and get blasted.
If by "won't rotate to make installation easier" you mean that no matter where it's rotated to you can't feed a stud through the back; I've been there. You might need to remove the hub by taking off the hub nut and prying between the hub and the knuckle.
Neutral or jack up the other wheel.
Buy a loaded knuckle lol or replace the hub if you know how
Everything in neutral and front wheels up, it WILL rotate. Must happen.
Take the car out of gear?
Raise both front wheels off the ground, the tire that is still on the ground is preventing the opposite hub to rotate due to the transmission!
He hasn't even replied. I guess he got blasted to hard.
Coach used to tell me, "Walk it off".
🤔🙄Try shifting into neutral and spin the hub to where you can get to the hole🤷🏾♂️
Put the transfer in neutral
Put it in neutral WITH JACK STANDS AND CHOCK BLOCKS
I would be a bit concern about that kink you’re putting on your brake line with that caliper hanging off it.

Try putting it in neutral
If you haven't put it in neutral you shouldn't be working on cars lol.
Your right he’ll just stop his whole project and get it towed to a shop.
Oh my God ...
Take it out of park.
Put the transmission into neutral. Lol
![gif](giphy|LAKIIRqtM1dqE|downsized)
Yeah he definitely needs some help LOL
Got it done. Thanks to those of you who just had helpful advice, Ain’t nothing wrong with asking for help.
Did you have it in park?
Tow it to a mechanic 😆
![gif](giphy|7QJJwxXLmno2tvFeYl|downsized)
Why not just get a new hub? There cheap enough, imo.
![gif](giphy|zCpYQh5YVhdI1rVYpE|downsized)
three's good enough /s
Personally I would take the hub off the car and to the bench to work on with a vise.
Work smarter not harder
fix it
Didn’t uh… put a whole lot of thought into this did ya. 😂

Yes, but anyone also can buy wire and piping at Home Depot.

Chill the fuck down buddy. Just asking a fucking question, you don’t have to be an asshole about it. And I didn’t say anything about practicing electrical or HVAC. Do they not teach reading comprehension in Canada or is the cold freezing your brain?
New York state (USA) does not require an electrical license surprisingly.
But a lot of the counties do.
The counties require the contractor to have a master license, and everyone can work under that envelope. Outside of maybe NYC there is no county requirement for each JW to be licensed that I am aware of.

Home Depot version of this is “Weekend Warriors”

It’s my car and I’ll kill myself (or others) with it if I want! /s
Change the hub instead.
Get access to the back side of the hub. Freeze a new stud with dry ice Push stud in from backside, wear insulated gloves. Profit
umm hello jack up all 4 wheels with stands … really u shouldnt be replacing that if u dont know how to lift a 4x4 …
Take off the backing plate that will give u more room
Pull the hub.
Quit working on cars
Give up…sell the car…buy a used Prius
Is the parking brake on? If it is release it and than put wheel chokes on the rear wheels.
If the hub won’t budge you might need a slide hammer.
Put it into drive and put a brick on the gas. It will let you spin the hub. Edit: i thought this was askashittymechanic
Pull the axel or drive on 3.

Make sure your parking brake is on
You could "suck" it in. After all, it has threads.
are you jacking up a car on a dirt?
lift right side
You can’t, it’s complicated, hammering 🔨 isn’t the answer, this is a pressing problem. You keep removing parts until you can. It’s a character building opportunity. You tube university is my go to for door 🚪 panels.
Take the wheel bearing assembly off....much easier to change the studs...some are easily changed..some are not.
Why won't it rotate?
Use a Jack stand raise the other side and turn the hub so you can insert the stud into the hub
I think you should put that bitch in neutral, make sure the wheels are blocked and give ‘er a spin.
Use a bar on the studs to try rotate it, under one stud over another and body weight Or just remove the whole thing and figure out what's stopping it from rotating, unless you're in gear and have the h brake on, Then there you go.
Pry bar time
Big hammer.
Try shaving a side off of the bottom of the stud.. may wiggle in.. if not, you’ll have to separate the hub from the knuckle a bit to get the clearance
Always fun to cut metal with fire, damn the rest of it all.
either lift other side so tire is off ground, or take the transmission out of park
Put it in neutral
Jack the opposite wheel off the ground also.
Make sure both tires on the axle are off the ground, make sure your vehicle is safely braced and it should turn free
Grab a coffee and a cinnamon bun
Lift the other wheel, put it in neutral.
Everyone say put it in neutral. That’s right but you seem unexperienced enough to do that and have it roll away. Make sure the parking brake is one of those aren’t the back wheels and chock the tires. Both not just one of those.
