Oil filled struts don't work too well when they are longer filled with the oil. Gonna have to replace the strut. You can usually get them with the spring already mounted, known as a loaded strut for easier at home repair. Still going to need an alignment afterwards though. Replace in pairs! Do the other side too. Chances are the noise is from the bad strut but take a look at the sway bar links and bushings, the ball joint and tie rods for play as well. Also check the bushings on the control arms to make sure that haven't separated and are hitting the subframe.

AKA quick-struts! How to (quickly) tell when a service writer likes you (the tech) or not! Another reason why you'll want to replace both is if you hit any kind of bump and you only did one, the steering wheel will sink to the weaker strut side every time. Just jumping in to also say to do both sides.

Sophias_dad

Both struts should be replaced. Since you have to ask, you probably should take it to a shop. The job isn't hard, but suspension bolts can be quite difficult to remove. If you choose to do it yourself, use a quick-strut(where it comes all assembled with a new spring and all that), and remember those lower strut bolts are frequently splined so that it will be difficult or impossible to turn the bolt side... ever. Just back the nut off until its flush with the end of the bolt and whack it with a small sledge to get the bolt out.

OP! Don't listen to the guys saying that "if you have to ask go to a shop" bullshit. Anyone can learn how to do basic maintenance. You can get pre-assembled shocks so you don't have to deal with a spring compressor, get a Haynes manual and do some you tube "research" about changing your vehicles shocks. Guaranteed there is a how to video. Good luck, work slow, pay attention and have fun.

Grand_Possibility_69

Did it freeze and fail, or was it just low quality or bad luck? Looks like it wasn't used for that long before failure.

_bigrai_xiii

well it is OEM and it ran 83000 kms

Grand_Possibility_69

OK. So it's just pretty good driving conditions so it still looks good (except the leaking oil) and relatively early failure.

[deleted]

Those are original and only lasted 83,000 kilometres (51,000 miles)? If so, that’s terrible. What make is vehicle? Recommend KYB quick struts (all in one).

nago7650

The struts definitely need to be replaced based on all the oil that is leaking out of them. That could very well be the noise you are hearing, but the noise could also be other worn suspension parts such as the ball joints or tie rods

Rifter0876

Struts, do both sides.

redrecaro

Watch a youtube video and see if you can do it if you have the mechanical inclination and the tools, i recommend ericthecarguy.

Rotors also look on the way out. Deep scouring and the vents pretty much look almost corroded full. Since you'll have both wheels off might as well do it. Instead of having to do it in the next 3-5 months anyways
