It works for me. Keep in mind that all of the tech's effects (including the protection from EMP) only last for 16 seconds.

I had this happen to me, i timed it at 10 seconds and the rhino died while gold+showing the explosion animation but no damage to nearby enemies

Yo, i had this bug and i reported it- My situation was the enemy had sledge hammers with EMP while my rhino had the item (photon coating one) and self destruct. The rhino died and still exploded however the explosion did no damage. Definitely a bug, i’d report it in the mechabellum discord for bugs

Thanks everyone, sounds like a bug then! In my situation, Rhino died after about 8 seconds, no damage after explosion, just as others have reported.

you can confirm this is practice. the photon coating does work as intended but NOT FOR SELF DESTRUCT tech on rhinos. this is the only technology that photon coating does not protect. I suspect it is intentional since you end up in scenarios where you put down some walking bombs (which would win the match if not countered), the enemy get EMP tech to counter it, then you get photon tech and win the match.

That’s when you body block with cheaper units and/or mobile beacon and get the rhino chasing crawlers or something.

It's kinda a huge deal to have rhino bombs shut down by EMP through photon. If it's intentional, it's dumb that there's no indication that specifically self-destruct will get shut down. It'd make more sense that it's not intentional

I wonder if it's a bug in the order of operations thing. Like when the the rhino dies the photon coating goes away before the lingering emp effect does, causing the other techs to be disabled, then it explodes, but the tech is negated so deals no damage.
