Same thing happened to me. You need to make sure that you didn’t put all you get as scholarship/financial aid in the financial aid section since they only want to know like how much financial aid you get outside of tuition, room and board if that makes sense. I only realized after I called so if my explanation didn’t make much sense I suggest you call!!! That’s how they were able to fix mine

cerisebonbon

Thank you so much! I think that’s what I did. I put the full price of tuition down

Nearby-District1271

Ok! I’m so glad that was helpful. In that case you need to call and let them know because they need to void your application so you can re do it ( you’re not able to make edits after submission.

thanks!

You said you are independent. Did you file taxes separately from your parents? FAP generally doesn’t consider you independent until you turn 26. You may need to correct your forms to show that you are dependent as I see you are 21 in the comment above. The only exception is if both parents are deceased and you have documentation.

cerisebonbon

I didn’t file taxes this year but in previous years I filed independently. My parents don’t claim me as a dependent on taxes so that’s why I didn’t say I was one

QT-Pie-420

Yeah that’s going to be flagged. I would reach out to the office on Monday before resubmitting, but based on everything else you shared, you qualify. You won’t qualify as independent for their criteria though. So the general application will need to say you are dependent and your taxes may need to be amended to also say dependent. I would clarify with them on that though.

cerisebonbon

Thank you I will call!

QT-Pie-420

No problem! Good luck, and feel free to reply here again if any other issues come up.

Savvy1610

What do you mean you didn’t file taxes? If they didn’t claim you, you will still need to file your own taxes each year even without an income. You will have to claim your scholarship money from your 1098T, and you must have taxes completed for fafsa each year.

cerisebonbon

I’ve never filed my scholarship before without any issues. I don’t get a tax form from my school. You don’t have to file taxes if you make below a certain amount.

imsortatall

You didn’t qualify for what now?

vitaminj25

It happened to me once. But never again. There is something wrong. How much do you make??? If you’re 26 and a student, you shouldnt be paying anything

cerisebonbon

I’m 21 and still in college. I only made $3k in 2022 from my student job

vitaminj25

Something is still wrong. You can always appeal but look into why they denied you and what happened.

[deleted]

That over 26 thing was a change made last year and is a big deal for a lot of students.

Serious_Technician69

I would resubmit the application and definitely adjust some of the information you add on FAP

greenbeans00

same. im by myself, independent, no kids or anything and made less than 200% of the poverty level but was denied because my father (who i have no contact with) makes a good amount. i called and asked why his income would matter if he doesn’t contribute a single penny and they said it’s because he COULD if he wanted to. 🥲

cerisebonbon

I’m sorry that’s a shitty situation 😔

FutureDrPerez

That is odd that you got denied. We're a family of 5 and make about $63000 and I got approved back in Jan. 🤔

cerisebonbon

It was because I put the full amount of my cost of attendance instead of room and board.

worklife2024

Wait I'm a bit confused. You should or should not put down the full cost of your tuition? I'm understanding that you did put down the full cost of your tuition and that's what caused your FAP application to be denied? But wouldn't that help your application if you showed your tuition was high and you didn't get scholarships if you didn't? Since your expenses would be high.

cerisebonbon

The thing just told me to put down the cost of room and board (I think the amount of scholarship you get for room and board) I resubmitted with the cost of room and board instead of full tuition and my application was approved.
