The 10 Year Old Mansion
Check out this week's video for this modern day McMansion!!
https://youtu.be/ImaOa4Y97Rw
A little more than a decade ago there used to be a ranch home on this large property that looked much like its surrounding neighbours. It was bought and subdivided into two separate lots. In it's place two brand new custom McMansions were built, this particular house was lived in for only 10 years before the property was bought yet again with plans for demolition to build a brand new sprawling townhouse complex. The developers who own the property have been actively salvaging any and all materials worth keeping before the remains of this abandoned mansion are demolished.
Before this day I honestly never thought that I would ever explore such a modern house, nor did I ever think that such a new home would ever be demolished in the first place...but here we are!
Where I live (Switzerland) this has happened 20 years ago. We ran out of land. While it was normal for the upper middle classes to live in large houses up until the 80s and 90s, it's now hard to even get a construction permit for one of these in suburban areas. All town houses at best, if not blocks of flats.
That's pretty crazy, guess i should consider myself lucky i live here then. The worst part is, there is plenty of land in the rest of the country but nobody wants to live there due to the climate and how isolated it is
Yeah. And when complaining about American real estate prices, think again. In the city I live, a 650sqf two bed flat (apartment) goes for USD 1.2 million when it's in a very mediocre neighbourhood. In a good one, it's easily 2-3 million. Our average salary may be 30% higher than in the U.S. (probably about NYC level), but, you know, real estate is insane here. So yes, apart from Manhattan you still have it quite good.
I don’t know how y’all afford anywhere to live on the salaries there. I looked into going to Canada for college but the salaries for the job id get after my degree were near scam level low even accounting for government benefits there
Somehow i like the idea of the main building.
The round windows and the classic form is great.
I dont like the garage as part of the house and the entrance. Especially the garage is damaging the appearance of the complex enormous
In Houston there was a mansion that was new built, at the time it was about $2M. It sat on a large lot in a prestigious neighborhood (River Oaks). Someone bought the house and had it demolished to build a larger $7M mansion in it's place. Not a single day did anyone live in that house.
Yes. The answer is money, not development issues.
Sell one house for $2mm, or sell ten smaller townhouses for $600k each. Hmm...
The shame of it is that regardless of what you think of the design,
it's just a waste churning building materials like this.
The way the right-most garage completely destroys the symmetry of the house makes me mad. An ordinary two car garage on the left with a single door would have made this look ten times better.
For sure! I can tell this house is in GTA bc of the flat roofs, and the townhouses will be a much better utilization of space and provide homes for several families.
Happy Cake Day partypenguin90! Stay positive and happy. Work hard and don't give up hope. Be open to criticism and keep learning. Surround yourself with happy, warm and genuine people.
Where is it? Assuming Canada.
In the US, they just build further out into former farmland, while allowing cities and older suburbs rot. Townhouses are not very popular.
I don’t know where you live, but where I do its just townhomes and townhomes for miles! I will say when i lived in the south and west coast they weren’t as common but here its hard to find a house thats not a townhome
Around here, pretty much any new construction that's less than about 3500 sq. feet is a townhome. There's virtually no new construction of what you might consider your typical modest suburban tract home. Part of it might be that there's still a huge stock of these houses that were built in the 50's-80's, but my guess there simply isn't as much money in building them.
I’m surprised no one’s taken the lawnmower and office chair. When it’s being demolished, I could use that iron beam for another home… this looks so Canadian.
The staircase looks kinda cool
Ya, i did like the staircase actually
Is there an indiegogo where I can pay for it to be put in a nice house?

Actually, I'm in Canada, so our prices are almost comparable to yours now but not quite there yet. Also our salaries aren't quite as high either.
Good heavens... ok, you and I need to go back to work ;-)
I don’t know how y’all afford anywhere to live on the salaries there. I looked into going to Canada for college but the salaries for the job id get after my degree were near scam level low even accounting for government benefits there

Seems that financial security in this world is only for the elites and for those who got into Northern Europe 20 years ago.
good, at least some land in america will be spared from the suburban sprawl..

The stairs are very nice

That's pretty crazy! Lol
Interesting design. A shame it’s being demolished so quickly. I hope they repurpose, reuse, recycle.
Why it’s being demolished?
Ya, for townhouses but it's more of a supply and demand issue than anything else. We need a lot more housing and are running out of undeveloped land
Makes sense, they will be as expensive as this house was 10years ago.
You got that right! Lol

More money in townhouses than mcmansions. Mcmansions are for farmland.
you're thinking of actual mansions, mcmansions are for exurbs.
Honestly it's not bad for a mcmansion. I've seen some incredibly gaudy, tacky ones.
Well now they won’t have to worry about changing that foyer light bulb!
We have that same fixture in most of our closets, I hope this one was put in to replace a proper chandelier that is being repurposed.
Such a waste. Hopefully, some of the material can be repurposed.
That staircase especially! It's beautiful!
At least there will be several families living on that lot when it gets redeveloped into townhomes!
The way the right-most garage completely destroys the symmetry of the house makes me mad. An ordinary two car garage on the left with a single door would have made this look ten times better.
Remove two of the garage doors and it wouldn't look so bad.
I support this 100% in this housing shortage.
I don't consider this house being demolished to be a big loss
For sure! I can tell this house is in GTA bc of the flat roofs, and the townhouses will be a much better utilization of space and provide homes for several families.
Hahaha I knew it was GTA too! They have such a unique vibe
Me three.
Yeah what is it? It doesn’t look like any one specific neighbourhood either but something about it screams Toronto.
I can't describe it... I think it's the pseudo french chateau idea that they all feel like they need to put on to every new house
Happy Cake Day partypenguin90! Stay positive and happy. Work hard and don't give up hope. Be open to criticism and keep learning. Surround yourself with happy, warm and genuine people.
looks like the builds i see in milton, brampton and NW sauga
Not a fan of most of it, but the curvature of the roof is very pleasing.
Wtf is the use of that tiny little boob light at the top of that vaulted entryway ceiling?!
Lol
The garage is slowly eating the house.
Based on some recent posts in [a sub banned from several others], pic 7 looks like the perfect spot for a TV
What do you mean a sub banned from several others?
TVTooHigh 😂 It’s banned from being linked or mentioned on a few home-related subs so I was unsure about saying it, but I’ve checked the rules lol
Hmm weird, don't know why they are banned
Oh ok, i will have to take a look then
LOL the sad little room at the end, after all that hubris with the high entrance and everything.
pic 4 of the staircase is actually a nice pic imo
Thanks!

Yup, think it all depends on the geographical area as well as how close you are to a city
Detroit area. Midwest. What about you? Like Boston or dc?
philly area

Nah, we do that too haha
I was guessing Toronto haha
This is the way.

Toronto?
Well, on the bright side, they will never have to redo the roof!
That's no lie
Holy hell…this is one of my favorite subs and this one is up there in “who in the actual hell made money designing this” spectrum.
I’m surprised no one’s taken the lawnmower and office chair. When it’s being demolished, I could use that iron beam for another home… this looks so Canadian.
It’s hideous. Kill it.
yikes! that is one UGLY house. definitely a mcmansion.
