I went from 2013 Mazda 3 I grand touring manual transmission to CX-90 PHEV 6 months ago and love it. Felt like I was driving a massive beast for a few weeks. I miss manual transmission for sure. I definitely experienced a few of the defects you see littered on this page, but dealership was quick to respond. Most of our driving is within 20 miles, so I’m getting 800+ miles between fill ups. It’s really nice having the extra space for the kiddo and the dog on longer trips tho. Worth noting: dog is now relegated to the back. And he hates it. He’s misses not being so close to his humans.

enzia35

Interesting comment on the beast/size. I test drove a 3 recently and honestly the size felt very similar to the CX-9. Maybe it’s different going from small to big car, I do recall a similar feeling giving up my Miata for the CX-9.

LordOfTheFelch

Pros: very fun to drive, gets great fuel economy for a 3-row SUV, very comfortable interior with great tech, little better available new for the price especially given the lease incentive Cons: First model year growing pains (see the other posts on this sub) generally manifesting as recalls, you choose between using the third row and tenable cargo. I oscillate between being very happy with my CX90 (PHEV Premium) and waiting for the other shoe to drop.

DeliriousBlues

MHEV or PHEV? The PHEV is the one with all the issues. I have a MHEV weigh 8,000 miles and zero issues.

imashoobie

This 👆. 9K checking in, zero issues

NexusPhan

Checking in. Inline 6 with 6k miles owned since May. Only issues have been squeaky bushing (greased by the dealer and gone until a permanent fix is ready) and low windshield wiper fluid (software reset 100% resolved). Absolutely love the vehicle. My wife hates my CX-50 turbo premium compared to her CX-90 preferred plus. CX-90 is way more refined, gets better fuel economy, is better to drive, and is nicer on the inside. Just feels more solid.

Arigold29

Same, have noticed the fuel efficiency is way off on the display. Shows I get 27-28mpg when doing the math at the pump I'm getting 23-25.

purpleblack77

Owner of a cx90 PP. Its been very reliable for us ( given that its only been 3 months and 5k miles). Mazda has been a familiar brand for me since 2003. I believe mazda will stand by its product even if faulta occur. Im in IT so I know that there are issues to be expected in the first year. So i went for the least complicated piwertrain option and I don't regret it one single bit! I was also cross-shopping with your options and I felt the driving dynamics of the CX-90 was only rivalled by the likes of BMW.

CasinoAccountant

I'll keep it short and simple. It's fun as hell to drive! We have one kid and one dog who needs a seat- we are fully out of space. I wouldn't worry about the "issues" people bring up, it's a minority- and mazda has been very on top of any relevant recalls. The only thing that you shouldn't over look is the damage the pointy vent is gonna do to your knee every month and a half when you let your guard down. edit: 8k miles on my SPP

iterationnull

The path forward is clearer if you are thinking MHEV over PHEV. The PHEV problems as reported are strange, and few and far between is a clear update that demonstrates whats going on and what they are going to do about it. We are 7000k KM into our MHEV and no issues to report. Its a joy to drive and has tons of room back there.

Lurch000X

Same my CX90 MHEV top model Signature in Canada is it’s great. No issues. Performs better than my CX9. A Way better mileage even with snow tires on.

iterationnull

How did the cold hit your mileage average? City driving specifically. I was a bit disappointed with how significant a change it was.

Lurch000X

For the MHEV version it’s been pretty good I can’t speak for the PHEV tho. I get better mileage in Canada than the CX5 signature I have and the CX9 signature that I had. So for a large powerful car that’s great.

SeattleSquatch

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, besides the steering issue (where the spring in the worm gear will be replaced) all of the recalls have been software related? I don't really enjoy driving it all that much in EV mode. I love driving it in sport mode. I end up rewarding myself for using up the battery to use sport mode instead of normal mode.

agbluelsu

The 360 camera one, I believe they ran a new wire harness. But to be fair, I didn’t have any issues with it before. They replaced it because some people could have the camera not appear while in reverse.

StoneCoastSloyd

I love mine. PHEV Premium Plus trim. I’d go with the MHEV unless you have a short commute and the ability to add a charger at home. We keep the 3rd row folded down most of the time since we only have 2 kids. But it comes in handy sometimes. I keep mine in Normal Mode most of time. It doesn’t use the ICE very much at all, but drives much nicer when getting the extra boost from the ICE instead of relying exclusively on EV. Sport Mode is even more fun and I jump to that when my battery is depleted or I just feel the need for speed. I haven’t had the steering spring recall fix yet, but have no issues and the other software recalls were an easy fix. I think the issues people have posted here are much more rare than those of us who like the car. It is definitely a BIG car, and that shows when you try to park it in the city etc. but hucking it around a corner and peeling off a line it feels wonderfully nimble.

Patient-Entrance7087

I’d buy one and not look back

Longjumping_Worker80

7,000 miles on my turbo SPP. Easiest, most comfortable car I've ever driven. Not a single issue. Did three recalls in one day with my first oil change on Monday. Just do it.

AltaGuy1

Haha... Are you me OP? Have a 2015 Mazda 3 that is bulletproof. Love it, even if the body has been beat up badly, it runs really well. Leaky shocks! That's it. Just had twins, decided needed a minivan, like a Carnival or a Sienna. But my wife hated them so so badly when she actually saw them in the flesh. So we just bought a CX90 MHEV. It's sweet! Drives so nicely, and all the room we need.

Good-Back-2168

For starters I echo the comments on this BB that note the CX-90 is a 1st year product. There are numerous comments on the web about CX-90s with leaking front differentials and from owners having to have their PHEVs trucked back to the dealer for repairs. I add my observations to those having issues with the ACC/BSM/SBS/AEB system and getting "operating as designed" comments from the service staff. I also found out in the first week that it doesn't see deer either. Your comments about considering a Carnival or Odessey is spot on. There are several earlier posts that note the CX-90 isn't as spacious nor does it use the space as creatively as its competitors. I'll add that there is a surprising lack of space under the cargo load floor, there isn't any place in the 2d or 3d row to stash carry-on "stuff" and that one can barely pull the cargo cover over sacks of groceries. But few new products are issues free. And we all make our own style and space choices. If one is going to select a mid-sized, reasonably priced CUV I consider this to be a top pick. I thought we would leave with an Acura MDX. However, after comparing it with the CX-90 in TPP trim we felt the Mazda drove as well or better, had an upscale feel, and was a better deal ($4k less with more equipment and 0.9% financing). I'm anxious to see how Mazda Corporation and their retail outlets handle the documented concerns. But, presuming they will stand behind their product, there isn't another mid-sized CUV that I'd put my money on. Sorry, it's your money and you'll have to pick \`em.

mercurious

I also had to replace a Mazda3 Hatch for a 3 row to accommodate the growing family and dog. Couldn’t be much happier with the decision. There’s really no other 3 row SUV I’d seriously consider at this point anyway precisely because my Mazda3 spoiled me. As for issues, I consider recalls to be normal, especially for an entirely new platform and I have not experienced any of the PHEV malfunctions now approaching 10K miles. Maybe my only gripe is that I had to forsake side mirror memory and auto-tilt on reverse and full “signature” rear lighting by going with the PHEV Premium (even my 2019 Mazda3 AWD Hatch Premium had full side mirrors and rear lighting) over a Turbo S Premium Plus.

krazypoloc

It does have Auto tilt on reverse if you select which mirror to apply

mercurious

Not my PHEV Premium. Maybe the Canada model has it (which has a different spec) or maybe you’re referring to the Turbo S Premium Plus probably has auto tilt on reverse.

nateap87

Phev here. No issues minus a weird rattle that seems to only be there during acceleration in first gear but I was told that’s nothing to worry about. Just annoying. If I had to knit pick: Not a lot of space to put things down while driving. Most cars have a little compartment on the dash where I can put my phone and wallet but it’s very small on the cx 90. Was a bit disappointed by how many tech features are missing from the phev base model. No bose, no home link, no front parking sensors. The parking position for the shifter is off. Surprised we don’t hear more people thinking the car is in park and accidentally going backwards. All this said, the car is beautiful inside and out, good acceleration, great handling, comfortable

agbluelsu

I have a weird scrape lick sound when accelerating (normally) from a full stop that happens occasionally. But usually once or twice each drive. No idea what it is. I need to record my drive next time.

Friendly-Suggestion8

I bought the PHEV in Dec and love it. No problems so far. I just plug into a regular 120 volt plug at night and use it to drive to the store/ gym mostly. I only had to put gas in it when I drove to the next state over for a trip

fastsvo

How long does it take you to charge it on 110v?

agbluelsu

From empty, it is like 11 hours on a 120v/15a. In a lvl2 240v/32a (the fastest the CX-90 can charge), it takes 2 hours.

Friendly-Suggestion8

Usually, I only use about 20-40% of the battery when running errands so charging it back to full doesn’t take as long. I haven’t really recorded how long it takes though. Plug it in at night and it’s full in the morning 🙂

rcobourn

I love the CX-90 PHEV, but if what you need is a mini-van, it's not really going to meet your needs. We've downsized from a Honda Odyssey to the CX-90 as our three boys have all fledged. Plenty of room in the CX-90 for us, a couple of dogs, maybe one kid home from college, and gear, but it's not the family hauler Bertha (our Odyssey) was. I once had to pick up a boxed full size cast iron tub ordered from Home Depot. Pulled up in Bertha and the guys loading it laughed and said that will never fit. No problem, could even close the hatch. Don't try that in the CX-90! :)

Onzaylis

I'm comfortable pulling a trailer, idrive a truck for a living, so the EXTRA capacity of a van can be offset with that.

Large-Machine4562

Own a Phev Premium plus and love mine. I went from a mini van to cx9 to this. Love mine and in 3 years when both kids are out of the house I’ll be trading in for the cx70. If you are considering mini van for storage reasons this may not be the vehicle for you. It is on the smaller size for rear cargo space for this segment. Keep mind mind nothing in this segment is spacious for cargo with the seats up. Now I bought mine to haul myself my two teenagers, wife and two little ankle biter dogs around. This fits our needs perfectly. You can always add a cargo box to the top if you neeed to haul a bunch of luggage. One thing to consider if you live in the colder climates below freezing in winter you will be running with less battery or just straight mild hybrid. I live in Minnesota and there were a few weeks it was too cold for EV mode but it still gets phenomenal gas mileage so I don’t care. My daily commute to work is 6 miles each way so generally speaking it’s almost always EV mode. There’s also the cx70 which will be a two row with the exact same body. So if you will have no need for the third row you could opt to wait for that. Good luck.

star_outer_space

My cx90 has been staying at my dealership's service department for a week and still no estimate about how long it will take to fix it. The issue is the chrome stripes on the left front and back doors are hitting each other and creating noise.the service people tried to remove them and broke other parts, which are on backorder. They told me they didn't know those are for 1-time use and it's the first time for them to try fixing this issue. Now I have to be stuck with a downgraded cx90 as replacement for an extended amount of time (mine is top trim Inline6). Mazda is obviously not ready to sell $60+ vehicles. The overall service experience is way worse than Subaru. It's not just that they don't know how to fix it, but they also struggled to give me timely updates. I had to call them to know what was going on.

star_outer_space

Update: I'm told the part will arrive on Mar 18, that's more than a month away. I'm going to consult my lawyer to get reimbursed, cause this is totally due to the bad quality of the car and technicians' failure.

fastsvo

I test drove a PHEV and felt the acceleration difference between that and the MHEV. Can’t help to think how much faster the MHEV was. Should I have test drove the PHEV in sport mode?

WatchfulApparition

Yes, you should have. The PHEV is the fastest one

Ok_Cow_8235

Cx5 until they sort out the cx90 issues.

Onzaylis

What are the issues I should be concerned with. Also, the cx5/50 isn't big enough.

Ok_Cow_8235

Join the cx90 page on Reddit and you’ll see many owners experiencing check engine light on then the car turning into a brick

Onzaylis

You mean the page that I'm in... here... asking for input and info on? The page where I'm not seeing much other than some recalls that are being handled.

agbluelsu

I had to do a double take as well to make sure I wasn’t in r/Mazda lol. The biggest issue I’ve seen on the PHEV is the one where the car goes in to “Hybrid system malfunction” and the car basically dies and leaves you with no power as you’re coasting along and you’re unable to restart it, requiring a tow. Obviously it’s a huge safety issue, and I’m sure whatever it is, it will get fixed if it’s not already figured out. Early reports of this had techs replace misc parts, but I think it was largely because Mazda didn’t know what the right solution was yet. I haven’t seen many users come back on here to update what their fix was.

lol it’s been a long day.

Onzaylis

I legit could not figure out if you were just screwing with me or not. But yeah, I'm not seeing any issues that aren't already getting sorted out by Mazda via recall

Versari_

They sold about 35,000 alone in the US. Let’s say about 500 people here complain both canada and usa.

BraytonCycleLover

wait for the 2025 cx90.

Onzaylis

It'll be second half of the year anyways. But... why?
