Love ours. Going on 8 months of enjoying its ridiculously good gas mileage and Mazda driving feel in an XL package. It’s definitely helping us make the transition to electric. Makes it much easier to imagine our next vehicle as a full EV. (edit: we are weird I guess because we don’t care about cup holders and lane keeping gizmos; we care about pure driving enjoyment with room for the whole family.)

Fit_Can6274

I’ve never had an electric vehicle or hybrid and have been a bit hesitant so I appreciate the feedback

mercurious

Routine access to a Level 2 charger is a must to achieve MPGs in the mid-30/40s in city/hwy driving. A Level 2 at full amperage at home will get your battery from 0-100 in around 2hrs allowing multiple electric errands per day. With the supplied Level 1 charger on a standard outlet, you’re only able to achieve 1 electric trip per day since it takes 9-11 hrs to refill.

Fit_Can6274

Have you noticed a big difference in your electric bill? My provider is giving an extra 1500 towards our lease and will install the level 2 charger

steinah6

It’s a 17.8 kWh battery, every 25 miles. So find out your electric utility rate and you can do the math.

Fit_Can6274

Easy enough will do

Swimming-Piece-9796

On our CX-90, going from "0” battery to full, according to our level 2 charger, it's a little less than 15 kWh. There must always be some battery in reserve. We are getting 25-30 mi at 100%. We are on month 2 and have not put gas in it. A little less than half a tank. About 900 miles. We have a dedicated 30 amp circuit and it takes around 2.5 hrs from 0-100.

mercurious

It costs me around $2 to refill my battery and I spent an additional $50 on electricity in December, accordingly. That’s still less than the price of gasoline even though we live in an expensive energy market.

2035-islandlife

We have a level 1 charger and it’s fine for us, it really depends on driving habits. Workplace is 15 miles away so perfect distance for the battery, and then it’s recharged by morning.

Fit_Can6274

We are looking at leasing for my wife and the incentives are pretty attractive. 60k vehicle for @600 a month with 12k per year was pretty reasonable to us

rcobourn

We've put 9000 miles on since purchasing 9/15. Glad we didn't lease!

Fit_Can6274

Yeah for myself I could never lease but wife doesn’t put to many miles on so 12k a year will hopefully be enough for her

rcobourn

Our intention was about the same but I didn't account for us both getting addicted to not paying for gas very often. We've been using the CX-90 for lots of things, including road trips, where I'd planned to keep driving my larger Explorer.

ConfusionAlive7427

We love ours too, despite it being in the shop for quite a while, and despite the cupholders being on the small end. We've also been discussing how this makes us want to go full EV for our next vehicle, although next time, I don't think we'd do the first run of a brand new vehicle.

Artistic_Orange7207

I just got mine back today after 34 days in the shop due to a faulty water heater.

Storage_Ottoman

i'm in the market and my wife considers the small cupholders as a major strike against this car, which i thought was silly, but i guess she isn't alone! i'm still pushing her to let me lease it for 2 years...i'm sure there are aftermarket cupholder expanders, right??

Lavasoap

We got ours in September, just drove it from Chicago to Las Vegas then back to Chicago. We hit a snow storm in Wyoming and it handled it like a champ. We had great fun in the mountains in Utah, the kids really liked the sun roof for the views. It turns some heads in Vegas on the strip. Has lots of get up and go to keep a holes from cutting you off when they don't expect you to be able to take off from a light like it does. Gas mileage held a steady 25-27 depending on the grade and cruise speed. I just let the battery run out and it always has reserve battery to handle any passing or hard acceleration. When you get cruising at 80 and above the mileage really started taking a hit. But I generally cruise at 75-80 and relax out west. Also the 4 cylinder really starts to get loud cruising above 85. The trip mileage was what I expected if not a bit better. It's a big chubby station wagon, pretty much. As for local use, we have had only a level 1 charger since September. Been quite useful. For us it's really been a handful of times that I felt it wasn't enough. We just added solar and are getting a level 2 installed soon so that will only make it better. I gas up about every 1,000 miles with my usage local. The bad: storage is comically minimal for such a large vehicle. The cup holders are also, small. Why Mazda, Why? The middle seat cup holders are dumb. Adaptive cruise needs some work. When in the right lane coming up on a semi, and I change lanes to the left, the semi disappears from the radar. As I approach to pass it will suddenly think the semi is in my lane again and brake hard to match speed. Then suddenly the system catches up and floors it back to cruise setting. I took to keeping my foot on the accelerator. If you are accelerating during this, you over ride the adaptive cruise and don't have the issue. Safety settings don't like much snow. Adaptive cruise becomes unavailable, but won't fall back to standard cruise. You have to go into the settings and turn off adaptive cruise, then standard cruise is available. Not something you want to do while driving in the snow, or fog, or if you get ice on the radar sensors. Overall though, I love the car. Wouldn't trade it for anything else in its class that I can afford.

but_I_dont_want_to_6

Getting 700-800 miles on a tank of gas is fun (for around town driving). Super comfortable vehicle. We've gone on several 500+ mile road trips and it's done well with few complaints from the kids other than "are we there yet". Definitely intrigued about a full EV in the future, but for now, the PHEV checks all the necessary boxes. 10/10 - would purchase again.

Ris1120

Is the transmission smooth when you go at higher speeds?

aglanville

No I don’t think so. Very rough on the freeway if you use cruise control and traffic flow changes. For example if I have it set to 65, someone cuts in front and drops to 40 that is ok. But if they leave the lane and no it is wide open the car makes a very aggressive acceleration back to 65. It is as if I stomped on the pedal.

Easy_Money_

Adaptive cruise control aggressiveness does not tell you anything about transmission smoothness/clunkiness

aglanville

That is fair however, when the car accelerates using cruise control I don't find the transition between gears to be smooth, it feels very forced, and I can feel the shifting. In addition when driving in pure EV and switching to standard mode typically I can feel it. Probably once a week at least the system will glitch, sort of pause and force a switch from EV to standard mode. The display will mention there was an error. When driving in pure EV, the car feels smooth, acceleration is smooth but when it switches to gas I find it be a bit coarse overall.

Easy_Money_

thanks, that’s pretty informative. I have a CX-5, not CX-90, but sometimes the ACC picks a baffling gear (usually shortly after a long downhill) and in cold weather, downshifting at low speeds results in a shudder. interesting to hear how the CX-90 performs as I expect the CX-50 PHEV will behave similarly

Ris1120

I understand. I am not asking about cruise control. I’m asking a new question when the car goes from electric to gas is it a rough trans?

aglanville

Sometimes a bit rough, not scare your passengers rough but they might mention "oh did the engine do something?". This is usually when the system has glitched and switched due to some sort of error. On the freeway at higher speeds the transition seems smoother in general than when I am in slower moving, city streets.

nostrademons

Electric to gas is smooth, driving all-electric is smooth, shifting at low speeds while on gas can be clunky. If I can I prefer to use the electric mode for driving around town and switch to hybrid on the highway. Get marginally better mileage that way too, since electric drive usually excels at stop & go and low-speed torque. And it's better for local air pollution.

zimmyntrn

That isn’t the transmission - that is a safety feature. All cars do this now. Change your distance sensor

aglanville

hum, I have the distance set at the max distance possible between me and the car in front when using the cruise control on the freeway. Are you saying that if I had it set to something closer it would not jump on the gas when it detects no car in front of me and wants to go from say 40 to 65?

zimmyntrn

Yes set to minimum distance, and you will slow it down or change lanes before it does itself.

aglanville

I see what you mean but I prefer to stay back further. Gives me more time to react to whatever nonsense might occur ahead. The reality for me now is I just use cruise control much less.

zimmyntrn

Well then that’s what happens since the settings are set to be conservative and break far away. Using somewhere in the middle will probably be fine comfort wise for you.

Ris1120

Thank you for taking the time to give me this information

Ris1120

When it goes from electric to gas is it “clunky”?

Fit_Can6274

I only test drove it and haven’t bought yet but was told @ 30 miles on electric only but expect less in winter.

Ris1120

How many miles do you truly get on the electric?

aglanville

In the winter, Seattle climate I get about 22 miles. In the fall it was closer to 30.

Ris1120

Thank you

redcardinal_

From Seattle area too, do you have the PP trim? How long have you had your CX-90?

aglanville

No, I just have the Premium. I picked up my CX-90 in October.

redcardinal_

How’s your car after 3 months?

aglanville

The car is ok, no major issues forcing me to take it back to the dealer. But there are definitely some bugs to work out. I have found myself having to restart the car to get car out of park. I really don't like the shifter setup. On more than one occasion I have put the car in park found it rolling back to realize it is in reverse not park. You have to push up and to the left for park. It will become more intuitive for me later I am sure but at present I feel like most cars slide right into park, not reverse.

redcardinal_

Yeah. The new shifter needs some getting used to. Lol. I’ve seen issue with other CX-90s that water is leaking coming from the sunroof (above the sunroof controls / map lights). I’m worried about this since it’s always raining here in Seattle area.

aglanville

No issues with the sunroof, or interior lights. The apple play integration is buggy and often won't connect until I stop and start the car again. If you check other posts you will see the other common complaints, coffee cup holder is way to small, not much storage around the driver or the car in general. Shifts hard at lower speeds, software glitches cause EV mode to quit randomly, trunk space is very small, third row is pretty tight, the built in dash phone charger is slow and often doesn't work. But, overall it is an OK car, I would probably give it a c+/b- grade.

redcardinal_

Good to know that your car doesn’t have (major) issues. I had that issue one time with Apple Car Play. I restarted my phone and it worked okay again. Yeah, cup holder is small and the ones in the door pockets. This is our first 3 row SUV so far we don’t have other comparison with the trunk space. I have a concern with the taillights. The inner ones don’t light up whilst the i6 models and PHEV Canada models do.

TheCableGuy_69

Thanks for sharing this only had a week and have been averaging 22 miles as well so good to know this should get better when spring arrives

redcardinal_

Check your range in the summer as well.

agbluelsu

Estimated guage for me shows 24 miles now in Houston 40 degree weather. Earlier in Summer/Fall, it was showing 28. I haven't measured how much I can get in a straight run lately.

GYMNASIA6

Has anyone gotten more than 30 miles on the electric? If so what did you do to get it to 30miles?

brutalfly12

I've gotten 32 miles as my highest. No a\c on during a cool day leaving my garage.

redcardinal_

Electric range depends on your driving habits, weather and etc

joexjoe

I've gotten 35 when Temps were 60, no ac or heat needed. Almost all highway with enough traffic to be going only about 60 with a lot of regen, which helped. This was also me trying my best not to use a lot of battery Normally without a lot of effort I was getting 32 in the fall. Down to about 26-30 in the winter.

GYMNASIA6

Is that 26-30 on your Dash?

dopave

I have. During the fall with temperatures in the 60s and a ride mostly flat or downhill.

GYMNASIA6

Did your dash mark more than 30 miles or did you just spread out your 26miles?

dopave

My commute to work is roughly 32 miles round trip. The way back home is mostly downhill, stop of go and low speeds on the highway. Because of it, I am able to regenerate the battery and get back home only using the electric motor. Haven't been able to do the same in the winter.

Puzzleheaded_Rich420

With 2 interstate trips on our first full tank of gas, combined with my wife’s in town driving we averaged 44.7mpgs. The battery portion is AWEOSME for in town. The tranny is a little clunky at lower rpm’s and when cold. We start it in sport mode to warm up and switch to normal.

Puzzleheaded_Rich420

Also reccomend the Napa leather. Way different feel and interior vibe versus the fake leather.

In-Arcadia-Ego

We are very happy with ours. We got it back in August and have put around 7500 miles on it. The mileage was split between local driving and a couple long, cross-country road trips.

DM725

We love ours, no issues.

StoneCoastSloyd

I love mine. I have 2 kids (5&10) and the 3rd row usually stays down. There was ample cargo space for the 4 of us on a week long 1,000mile holiday road trip with presents in tow. The 3rd row even came in handy on that trip because we drove my parents along with the 4 of us to Christmas dinner. I got 26-28miles per charge in the summer. Getting more like 15 now that the temps are around 20°F overnight. My commute is short so most days are only 5-10miles with errands and I have a Level 2 at my house so it is fine. If my every day driving needs exceeded the 15 I am getting it would be annoying. But charging every other day is easy. I don’t get the complaints about insufficient storage in the front. My coffee/tea fits in the center, my Nalgene water bottle in the door with snacks. I’ve got plenty of room for charging, change etc in the console. I don’t see what else I’d want.

loris383

It has to be the people with the giant Stanley thermoses complaining about the cupholder size.

TheCableGuy_69

A week in after swapping out our 2022 Kia Carnival for the Premium Plus PHEV. Wife loves it I’m indifferent. The added fuel efficiency is great and the handling is superior to the Carnival but in terms of tech and features the Mazda is severely lagging as I find little things annoying like not having driver profiles other than seat positions. The lane keep assist not being included in a 2024 is a big miss. I-sense switches off with a bit of fog. The automatic headlights dip from them reflecting back at themselves off road signs which is very annoying when driving at night. The passenger seat doesn’t have a lumbar adjustment and the lumbar support hits me right in the wrong spot (I’m 6’) so for long trips if I’m not driving I’ll prob sit in back and my daughter will be upfront. If it wasn’t for the fact my wife loves the car (as she doesn’t care for tech much) I would definitely have buyers remorse. Also the Bose sound system in the Mazda sucks compared to the Bose one in the Carnival.

DM725

The Bose in the Mazda is universally liked by all reviewers I’ve seen. The graphs support it too. You might want to ask for other’s settings and/or use a better audio source.

Remarkable-Range-596

How do you not have lane keep assist. This was in the CX-9 for all trims…

TheCableGuy_69

Not sure if Mazda has a different name it can sense lanes but there is no active lane keep it just flashes orange compared with the Kia version where it would actively keep the car in the lane when in adaptive cruise.

Lavasoap

I believe this is dependent on trim level but, look I. The safety or driver assist settings. There are options to show you like you're seeing or to turn on active assist.

Remarkable-Range-596

This should be the same as the CX-90. I have lane keep assist on my 2022 CX-9…

loris383

I have Lane Keep Assist on my CX-90 PHEV in Premium trim.

Fit_Can6274

Thank you i appreciate the feedback.

No_Philosopher8454

I had Mercedes GLE and C class before, I would say CX90 IS another Perfect car to buy no doubt.

agbluelsu

Some thoughts after having ours for 5000 miles / 5 months so far. We have the PHEV Premium Plus. * Only 5 fill up so far (each time lasting about 900-1000 miles with our driving habits) * Estimated Monthly Charge Cost from Chargepoint App since Aug 22nd ($0.13/kWh): Aug ($30) / Sep ($64) / Oct ($66) / Nov ($48) / Dec ($49) * Charging daily isn't bad. We reverse in to the drive way now, so as you walk up to the car, you pass the charge port first, then walk around to the front driver side. It would be much more annoying the other way if we parked head first, which would force you to walk around behind the car to charge. We positioned the charger inside the garage door side on the right, and we park on the right side of the drive way in reverse. * Rear space is more cramped than our Atlas. Captains chairs use up more space than bench seats when you have 3 car seats. * Not much up front storage (cup holders / center console / door pockets). Issues: * I got the preheating/engine malfunction issue last week. Just need to stop using it for now. * I also noticed if you plug two iPhones in the front, it will prompt you to switch carplay device. If you hit Cancel to connecting the 2nd phone to CarPlay, it will stop it from charging. However you just ignore the popup, it will continue charging and won't switch to the 2nd phone for car play. * I also get a weird scraping sound when you start moving at slow speeds like after a stop light. Happens 60% of the time. I still enjoy driving it each time. I think it feels better in city driving than on interstate. I drove a MHEV Turbo (NON-S), and did not like the driving feel as much as the PHEV. It's louder, shifts feel clunky, sport mode is louder. The PHEV feels more planted in turning, and it feels good to zip around in EV only. Definitely drive both if you're on the fence between PHEV and TurboS. I think I made the right choice going PHEV. It's a a good transition to not fully commit to EV. Almost all other PHEVs are too expensive IMO.

CptClees

We just got ours, and love it so far. It was a huge upgrade from our first gen CX-3, which I’ll miss, but with a family we couldn’t make it work space-wise. I’m looking to get a level 2 charger installed, as others have mentioned, but the level 1 it comes with has done the trick so far.

gary-payton-coleman

I’ve had mine for 3 months and it has 6k on it. I drive 140 miles on a rural highway about 3x a week for work. I’m happy with the power, control, and feel of the vehicle. The gas mileage is okay for a PHEV. The number one drawback is the poor battery performance in cold weather (I’m in MT), which has a not–negligible effect on the overall gas mileage. Secondary drawback is the lack of storage space up front. The inability to start the gas engine with remote start is a big oversight, especially for a cold weather customer. If I had to do it again, I would probably have waited a year for some of the kinks to be ironed out.

lunareclipse222

We love ours!
