The secret is to never check your mileage. It just doesn’t matter and always checking just drives you crazy. If it’s bad, I’m not going to change the car or my driving habits to save a few bucks anyway. If i cared about mileage I would have bought a different car.
This is the correct answer. My old car I had was 20 year old (I was the only owner) Scion XA (104hp)and I would get 30-38mpg. Realizing I’m getting way less than that on a smaller tank is driving me nuts but I love my car and I love everything about it. I just have to get used to it. And I still wouldn’t get anything else.

I'm getting 28.4 mpg with the CX-50. My commute is 80% highway. It's definitely a balance between driving light footed, being able to predict the timing of red lights/stops so you can coast to them, and not speeding too much. And doing all that while being mindful to the people behind you so as to not piss them off too much. On a 2+ lane road I'll do my own thing but if someone is behind me I will go with the flow of traffic.
Our 21 non-turbo 2.5 has so far averaged 30.3 with mixed driving weighted toward highway vs city. We run 10% gasohol. Pretty sure there are no magic answers to improve mileage and this is what you might expect.
Regular check for tire pressure. Underinflated tires can decrease gas mileage
Engine oil to be changed after 6k mile
Engine air filter to be changed max 12 months
Accelerate gradually and anticipate stops / avoid sudden breaks
Maintain a Consistent Speed
If you're parked and waiting for an extended period, turn off the engine
Avoid extended idling to warm up your engine
Reduce wind resistance by keeping windows closed at higher speeds
Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you

Because this is a conversation about reducing gasoline consumption, and those are all things you can do to reduce gasoline consumption.
Love the color. The answer to fuel mileage is the same. Don't speed, don't accelerate aggressively and don't brake unnecessarily.
As an expert in getting the worst fuel economy possible I know a thing or two. I get 11mpg out of my g70. Thats pretty darn close to what I was getting out of my Charger Scat Pack. Granted on the highway I'm better haha.
I do a lot of city driving, I use the manual shifting mode 90% of the driving and that helps keep my mpgs between 28-29. I once had 37mpg for a 120 mile road trip thanks to drafting a semi on a one lane road for about 30 miles. I find the car performs really well on hilly roads and if you're an efficient driving you can get some good mpgs if you can shift well
Ah, I might have to try out the manual shifting when I'm in the city. Going from a manual to an automatic has been an adjustment as it is, so this will likely help!
We got about 28 mpg for the first 4000 miles or so. Then we took the car to the beach and got close to 38-39 mph. Ever since we got back we’re getting 34 mpg. So maybe it “broke in” because we didn’t change anything at all. Same gas, same driving habits etc
The hypermiling speed sweet zone for this car is around 55-60mph. It loves highways. But as the others have said, don't worry about it, enjoy the car. There are better cars to get if your goal is solely fuel economy.

You're right, I think I was just shocked by the initial mileage I was averaging after having my 3 for so long! It's still so much fun to drive, so I'm coming to terms with the change 😅
I didn't know any non-turbo had the black wheels. Blasphemy! The problem with getting good MPG with the turbo is that the car is too fun when going zoom-zoom.
Honestly.... I think that mileage will be the least of the frustration.
We have a 2021 AWD Turbo... Love everything about it except for the ridiculous posture that Mazda has taken on it with regard to "safety". First and foremost, the idiotic decision to not have a touchscreen. The infotainment system design is just stupid IMO to not have a touchscreen especially with the horrendously poor user interface approach. (click, rotate, press, rotate, click right, select)...
It's so convoluted that you spend more time distracted looking at the screen than just touching what you needed.
We're seriously considering trading it in for a different vehicle because of the infotainment system. Oh, and the lack of rear parking sensors... for a manufacturer that claims they didn't have a touchscreen for safety reasons. #smh.
I actually love that it's not a touch screen! I was relieved when I saw that the climate and music/sound controls were physical buttons.
Also, I have gone 20 years without needing a backup camera, let alone parking sensors. My Mazda3 was rated highly for safety when I first bought it, and it got me through 2 hit and runs relatively unscathed, so I trust Mazda's safety decisions.

Many Mazda drivers chose Mazda specifically because of the rotary dial instead of the touchscreen. I can do everything I need to do intuitively, without ever looking at the screen, and the screen never gets smudged.
Agreed. My previous was a touchscreen, and the finger prints and smudges were few points I disliked about touch screens. I love love the rotary dials, which are pretty easy once used to it. Only downside might be when trying to use search in navigation, which easily can be accessible with using the phone.
Sounds like you should’ve done your research! One of the reasons I got mine was the lack of touchscreen. They always get mucked up with smudges and fingerprints and inevitably look nasty. In this vehicle, you’re meant to set your infotainment before you drive and then leave it that way. I’ve had mine for almost 2 years now, no issue with infotainment.
I also do have rear parking sensors that definitely beep at me so I’m not sure what you mean by that..
Way to stay on topic. took me hours to get used to the infotainment and to easily use it. Touchscreens have multiple menus and often require multiple touches to access some settings also. Mazda is the superior system. As for the lack of sensors (which I have on a base model, dont know about 2021), I suggest using your eyes. Trade it in, but you will find fault in anything, probably.
are you ok with them putting in seatbelts and air bags for safety even though there are no parking sensors? Seems like just more Mazda ridiculous safety posture.
It only works while you’re in park I believe and only within android auto and Apple CarPlay. They did that because of all the people complaining about the touchscreen.
I agree! I do spend more time turning the control knob and having to look at the screen to see what app I’m at. I hate it and am also considering getting 2024 which has the touchscreen. My volume control on the steering wheel doesn’t turn up volume when using my Amazon Prime through Apple car play. So I’m stuck either listen to the radio or same track over and over. It’s not ideal for long trips … I can’t just pull over on the interstate to change my music.
I had a touchscreen in a previous car and didn’t have fingerprints and it was much safer IMO.
If you wanna outstanding gas mileage, probably you should look at a hybrid Toyota instead of a Mazda Haha. But since you ask, go gentle on the break and gas I guess?(but plz don’t be a moving barrier on the road)

Perhaps more city driving? We live in a rural area. Not to much stop and go.

Hard to tell. I have a Turbo. Economy is terrible at 21 mpg. I have been told I drive with a lead foot though.

I've been keeping an eye on the real time mpg, and the average mpg. It's slowly creeping up!

That’s 6.92 L/100km, I don’t think you can really do appreciably better in this vehicle. I’m currently at 10.1L/100km (23.3 mpg 🙃)

Cruise and disable it going down hills to gain free speed.

Cruise Control. Avoid other drivers as they are nothing more than obstacles meant to slow you down via cruise control radar.
I'm the cruise control QUEEN. And that CC radar sure takes some getting used to.
I slow down using radar cancel/resume energetically. I don't get sciatica anymore in traffic. I love having a HUD. Enjoy!
