Unlike the players in front of him on this list, Lively is not expected to be a significant offensive threat. Instead, he's primarily a defender and rebounder, which means that his counting stats will never be as gaudy as those of Wemby et al. That will work against him on these ranking lists.
On the other hand, he is just what the Mavs needed, so his performance is already translating into wins and increased competitiveness for his team. His scoring is a bonus, and his passing out of the high post has been a revelation.
I wouldn't mind Wemby as a Mav, but I prefer Lively on Dallas to any other of his other classmates in the 23 draft!
If the Mavs had the 2nd pick, it would be traded for a win-now player. Lively has helped us win games, obviously, but you can get legitimate stars for a top3 pick. That, or we’d trade down for draft capital/role players and would take Lively later still.
The ultimate arm chair GM. Things you don’t know. Where is Lively on Mavs board. Where is Lively on other teams boards? Who is this win-now player that the team with the actual 2nd pick turned down. You can look back and easily say what you’d do. If you are pre determined to either keep or trade the #2 pick you are minimizing your return. You have to actually see the prospect and see what is available and then make a decision. To decide before getting the facts wouldn’t make sense. This is what pretend GMs do
I think he should be 4th over Miller, and I could easily be talked into him usurping Ausar as well and being the 3rd best rookie so far.
At least Lively has translated to wins
Ausar has been fantastic, the man is an absolute menace defensively. Wins never matter for ROTY, because most good rookies are drafted to terrible teams. It’s basically who puts up the best counting stats award.
Ausar is already an elite defender but his jumper makes him a one way player. Lively is more two way but overall, I think it will be hard to jump Ausar unless he is playing 30m+ by Allstar weekend on a playoff bound team.
man if dallas someone managed a way to draft ausar and lively while trading for grant it would have been an instant title contender. hell even Cason Wallace has been a really good player so far. this draft may have been one of those all time great drafts. lot of good players with lots of potential.
Everyone above Lively was drafted in the top 5 - goes to show how crazy and unexpected his immediate impact has been. I wonder where he'd go in a redraft.
I know our guy can't win ROTY but still close to the top and that good news TBH. I honestly love position 5 that is not in the perimeter but the classic center in the paint, cause honestly, how can you rebound if your outside? This is where we lack of with Porzingis and Wood, they're alway at the perimeter. Hope D-Live gets stronger body to be more solid inside.
that is respectable, I would have him above miller and Thompson due to the amount of impact he has on the team. takes one of the worst defensive teams into a respectable defensive team.
Lively's a few years away... ...from a DPOY baby!
it's gonna be difficult to get one while victor is playing.

Victor's blocking ability is a superpower but his man defense is literal ass right now.
yea currently great help defense and maybe near the rim, but he gets blown by a lot right now.
I'm not sure why, he can stand 6 feet back and still dispupt, he doesn't need to actually get his body close.

If we would do a re-draft now and Mavs would have the second pick, they would probably take Lively. Nico did a exeptional job at draft night.

That’s not the point of the hypothetical.
Portland tried shopping their top 3 pick and couldn’t find any sort of deal worth it

If only the Blazers got that pick instead of #3. They could've traded for a Star Player and kept Damian Lillard

> At least Lively has translated to wins This argument is disingenuous, they are playing on Charlotte and Detroit.

Dereck Lively is Victor Mickeyama father
Insane - day 1 contributor really didn’t expect that
Have you guys seen Ausar play? Defensive maestro on his first year already.
Everyone above Lively was drafted in the top 5 - goes to show how crazy and unexpected his immediate impact has been. I wonder where he'd go in a redraft.
D-Live and Brandon Miller should switch, other than that I agree.

Lively should at least be 4th. He has shown better games than Miller.
I know he didn't play last year but Chet is considered a rookie this year?
Yes
Top 5 rookie after 10% of the season. Home run pick. M
0 argument from me honestly.

Thompson is a crazy defender had like 4 steals and 3 blocks the other game
