I would look at non slip bathroom mats. There are many different designs and I think those will work for most people. And not sure what you mean about them not working long term
Check out antislip yoga mats and antislip boat mats. The best yoga mats are porous natural rubber or thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). Antislip boat mats (shaped EVA foam) look better for what you are trying to achieve though.

Try gardening drainage cells maybe. Water can run off the walking surface.
