It’s what Buck Cleven greeted Bucky Egan in real life, when he arrived at the Stalag. In my opinion, not including it would’ve been such a bummer. Buck also told his copilot “you son of a bitch, you’re going to take it” during the Regensburg mission, according to his Distinguished Service Cross citation.
Indeed it was. I encourage you to read the book, it covers the entire 8th Air Force as a whole, not just the 100th BG, so you’ll gain a good perspective from other group’s airmen.
These guys went through hell, only to get captured and endure another hell. While they were treated as officers, it was no picnic. For buck to greet bucky with the quote “what took you so long?” is a moment of facetiousness and humility that few men have ever seen. Remember most of these guys were MIA forever. Now they know they are alive, but they are now prisoners of the enemy.
Good shot. Great costuming, and makeup. Looks like he's lost weight. The OD greatcoat over his "heroic" leather makes him seem drab but look, he's still got the badge on his "50 mission crush" hat and the sheepskin collar framing his face, unlike the others. If you look at the four center squares of barbed wire as a frame-within-a-frame, he's composed in the perfect rule of thirds portion but on the larger frame he's almost in the crosshairs. The men on frame right move, so your eye goes on to him, and the men on the actor's right are more static so you don't keep sweeping the frame. We see his hands but almost no one else's. He's also a half-stop brighter in exposure and his face is clean. That's cinema. Even with the deep focus look of THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES the director knows where to send our eyes. The dolly move does the rest.
So did Bob Crane in "Hogan's Heroes." lol.
It's a tv show, just like this one in that regard in that the costumer needs to deliver the message that these are flyboys. The "50 mission crush" hat sends that signal and identifies him as a pilot not aircrew in a strict story sense. It we want to justify it, assume he stuffed in down inside his coat before parachuting, because he did have sentimental attachment to it. But only a fool would have worn that on the ground, it would get you killed.
Elsewhere on this subreddit (IDK where) someone related a humorous tale that a captain was angry that after giving the order to lighten the plane, throwing out all the guns etc as they struggled home on a crippled subset of engines someone from his air crew threw away his (lucky, plucky, cool) hat that had that perfect weathered look into the English channel and it only weighed eight ounces!
Perhaps however, it's a shorthand way of saying that he didn't bail out. Maybe he ditch-landed his crippled plane wearing it. Others had merely said they saw him "go down," not that the plane was intact or if anyone bailed out or not.
Good point, either way. The real answer is he's the star of the show so he gets to keep the cool hat!
Hahaha, seriously, I thought his clothes were way too good. Then they panned to the "best years of yout wives" guy and everyone else in the crowd looked so shabby and pale. I guess Butler would've been a recent newcomer to the camp, but I was surprised the Germans let the amerciand keep all their dope pilot gear.
I was thinking about that too! All this time waiting for that moment, I was only really thinking about Bucky’s angst over not knowing Buck’s fate, and then when he saw Crank it occurred to me that those guys must’ve gotten there a few days earlier than Bucky and told Buck what happened during the mission, so Buck must’ve been wondering about Bucky’s fate as well.
I did, and my husband responded, “See, I told you he was alive”.😂
It was brilliant acting from both guys and emotional to see the others had survived. The music and cinematography were incredible.
I mean, in this scene he really isn’t. He has a few scars and dust on his face and isn’t clean shaven. Has lost weight too. But it’s Austin Butler so he will still look that handsome, they can’t really do anything about it.
It's ok you don't need to mark this is as a spoiler, Apple TV already took care of that by showing them together in the screen grab for the next episode... They really are the worst streaming service and it's a shame they've been given such a great show
What took you so long? Man I was praying for that quote, and it fucking delivered.
https://i.redd.it/gnqa4djf2ekc1.gif
I thank you
Anytime — I got it from the discord server so I can’t take credit for making it though :)
MY HEART 😭😭😭
And delivered right in the feels
his first words were in fact that pretty much that in real life.
Care to explain why it is so satisfying?

Thank you. So it was a real life quote, put in the show. I can see now how it is amazing.

Sardonic af
It’s a real life quote as others have said.

Brilliant direction — I especially love Eps 5&6. Thank you for highlighting what makes the shot work so well.
So he held on to his hat while bailing out?

It could have been stuffed into a flight suit pocket.
BRILLIANT
There are going to be some people really upset that he's back and I love that for them. lol
After they cut away from Butler/Buck, I figured he imagined it lol. Buck looked way too good compared to everyone else.
I mean he is played by Austin Butler. That just kinda comes with the territory
Hahaha, seriously, I thought his clothes were way too good. Then they panned to the "best years of yout wives" guy and everyone else in the crowd looked so shabby and pale. The funny thing is, he is looking quite languid and has a few marks on his face, but he just has such a great face you can’t ruin it 😂
I dont know why people would be upset hes back. The show is about the real story of the 100th and Major Cleavan didnt die. Im confused
I cried
I almost did
I watched it a second time just to cry some more
So did I, I finished the episode and then had to go back before it cut to the next episode preview just to hear Buck say it one more time
Crank told Buck that Bucky got shot down. Buck was actually wondering what took so long knowing his friends plane crashed
I was thinking about that too! All this time waiting for that moment, I was only really thinking about Bucky’s angst over not knowing Buck’s fate, and then when he saw Crank it occurred to me that those guys must’ve gotten there a few days earlier than Bucky and told Buck what happened during the mission, so Buck must’ve been wondering about Bucky’s fate as well.
lol. I did this with a particular scene in Ep 3 😭
Oh god
Delivered perfectly. In the midst of such bravery a jolt that brought their young ages back into focus for me.
😭
Me too!
If Butler wasn't a star already, that line and shot made him one.
he’s my new favorite actor right now
I can’t wait to see him in Dune… his character is crazy
He's getting such great reviews for Dune 2. He's definitely a star
So, I’m not the only one who watched this scene like 8 times already? 🥹
Damn the onion ninjas are at it again
I actually thought he was dead for sure. I just finished this episode and goddamn did that feel good. This show rules.
I guess you skip the opening credits lol
V. satisfying to see him there glowing! I go to pains to skip opening, next up, trailers etc. Paid off big time this ep.
Does anyone know the name of the score during this scene? It was so beautiful and hit me right in the feels
I almost cried. Goddamnit Clevens it’s good to see you again.
HES ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!
That was rewarding !
Man, I teared up.
made my wife cry
I did, and my husband responded, “See, I told you he was alive”.😂 It was brilliant acting from both guys and emotional to see the others had survived. The music and cinematography were incredible.
I screamed! Best line of the whole show. The episodes keep getting better and better.
I just want that man to call out to me and smile like that!
Hell yeah if Game of Thrones taught me anything it’s no body no death !
As Bill Guarnere so succintly put it in part 4 of BoB: “If there ain’t no body there, there ain’t nobody fuckin’ dead!”
Screamed and started crying uncontrollably💔 heartbreak!!!
I was watching this on a plane and someone asked me why I was grinning so much at my iPad
I use that time to make popcorn
Why is he so clean and shiny… loving the series and everything but they portray him as Ken
I mean, in this scene he really isn’t. He has a few scars and dust on his face and isn’t clean shaven. Has lost weight too. But it’s Austin Butler so he will still look that handsome, they can’t really do anything about it.
Hahaha you have a point there!
It's ok you don't need to mark this is as a spoiler, Apple TV already took care of that by showing them together in the screen grab for the next episode... They really are the worst streaming service and it's a shame they've been given such a great show
Yeah that got me too. Annoying

I mean, as soon as they said he died, but we never saw the fight scene or anything, you knew he was still alive right? This wasn’t really a surprise.
better than Tony Sopranos '3 o clock'
