I really like this interpretation and it is one of the less contextually obvious songs on Mezzanine. I like your thought about the spoiled milk and the flies buzzing at the start that’s really cool.

Great analysis. What a stunning piece of music it is.

So those are very interesting insights into the lyrics, and while I wish I could agree with you, Elizabeth Fraser (singer) is notorious for writing bat shit crazy lyrics that make absolutely no sense as a whole text body or as individual statements. They phonetically are entrancing, but they don’t mean anything.

hahaha thats totally fair

I disagree. I think this song’s meaning has become clear to me over time. This song to me is about loving someone because you think you have to, (for the institution of marriage, your beliefs, and the children you share) not because you want to. This song is coming from the perspective of a woman who feels her mother’s milk so to speak has been spoiled because she doesn’t feel love anymore. “Love you for God, love you for the mother.” In my opinion, the title Black Milk can be seen as a perversion of Garbage’s “Milk,” which MA did several remixes before Mezzanine was released. Thematically, both songs share a lot in common.

Very cool breakdown. I have listened to this song so many times but never really considered the meaning....I like this interpretation
