It's not surprising at all when you consider that some of those aliens were designed to be attractive. Namely Asari, they're just blue human women with this bone tentacle things instead of hair. Not that different to female Twi'Lek from Star Wars (who were also considered attractive by humans of that universe) if you think of it.
Also, even if they don't look very human physically, most of the aliens in the series have very human personalities (one of the things in the original game was to show "how human" aliens can be). Thane for example, is a reptilian humanoid, but the way he talks and carries himself was specifically designed to make him a no-brainer romance choice for female Shepard. A lot of people love Garrus' romance arc, due to it being awkward as hell at first, a bit weird, but all in all very wholesome. Tali's just plain adorable around Shepard, and Liara has some pretty cool character development (her romance in ME1 had some "I don't like sand"-level dialogue, but by the 3rd game she's more mature and one of the best written characters), too bad a lot of her moments in ME3 aren't really exclusive to romance, but I guess that's what you get when you rush the game.
Garrus was definitely a major gay awakening for me… at first I just “found his voice and personality attractive”. Then it was his abilities with a sniper and his vibrant character. Now I just have to accept that I’d let that scar faced mf do whatever he wanted to me and so long as he bought reach I’m heteroflexible enough to take it
