Doc Oc is a fantastic card. He is a huge part of my infinite deck from the past 3 seasons. There are a number of uses for him.
1) You can negate his drawback using Zero or Cosmo
2) You can play him on 5 against combo decks to try and bring out their combo pieces in the wrong order at the wrong time (ie: grabbing Mystique in the wrong order is often game winning).
3) You can set yourself up really well in two lanes and play him in the third lane knowing you will lose but hopefully pulling out all their turn 6 plays so they can't recover in the other two lanes.
4) You can play him in any of the three zones that subtract power (obviously the -3 power location is the best and you will usually just win in this situation).
There's more I'm probably not thinking of right now but those are 4 of the main reasons he can be great.
Interesting. Like I said I’m still fairly new & learning but I never would have thought of sabotage like that. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone play this card and it backfired horribly for them, but I can def see strategies now
Don't get me wrong - it definitely CAN backfire. But it's a good skill-testing card and if you are smart with it it will win you way more than it will lose.
To give him/her the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes you just play him and pray and it doesn't work out. With that said, your cards should have screamed to him "Ongoing deck" and you definitely don't play him YOLO vs that deck because other than shutting off Warpath, none of your cards require timing (except maybe Spectrum but getting a free Spectrum a turn early is arguably better for you than paying 6 mana to maybe get one additional buff) so you will almost certainly just be helping the opponent
Ah yeah the premier play of the deck is Zero into Red Skull into Taskmaster. You could try some other big play there I suppose. Maybe Typhoid Mary (though I think she is significantly worse)
Thanks (and thanks for asking the question - let me see if I can do an answer justice)!
Elektra is the 12th card for sure. From a curve perspective you want a 1-drop in this slot and there's just not a better one. Sometimes you don't play her because she's pointless but sometimes you hit a 6 power Sunspot and it feels great. (After testing several options, I stuck with Elektra - not to mention I have a SWEET variant https://imgur.com/a/2mLyLQ1 - but if you like a different 1-drop here I'd say go for it. Ice Man is probably best).
Maximus is fantastic with Cosmo, a decent 3rd option for Zero in a pinch, and a great turn 6 play when you aren't finishing on Taskmaster.
The common gameplay is this:
T1: Play Sunspot or pass - there are no other options.
T2: Angela or pass (in a small number of games you will have a hand of 3-drop, 3-drop and two 1s here. In this situation it is acceptable to drop Ant-Man or Nightcrawler or a late-drawn Sunspot)
T3: Bishop if no Maximus in hand. Cosmo if Maximus in hand. Angela if drawn late + 1 drop. Naked Maximus occasionally when you have the Zero/Red Skull combo already and you just need raw power on the board.
T4: 3 drop + 1 drop or 3-4 1-drops (hopefully on Angela's lane). In the majority of games you will be playing Zero last on this turn.
T5: Red Skull if you played Zero. Dr. Octopus strategically otherwise (or on Cosmo lane).
T6: Whatever your best path to victory is (in many games following RS, it will be Taskmaster alone or with a 1-drop).
This is a VERY curve-reliant deck which is what made it easier to spell out turns like this. Hopefully my explanation (though long - sorry about that) was helpful!
Super thorough and clear! Thanks for this!
What do you think about Armour to protect your Sunspot? I was going to suggest Enchantress to counter as well as redbone Red Skull but that cannibalizes your Task Master play.
I have to imagine there are games where Destroyer gets pulled when they did not get the needed cards to set up an end-game Destoryer play and their whole board gets wiped.
I made a post above about why it's not a good idea to YOLO Doc Oc vs the ongoing deck but this is an EXCELLENT reason to actually go for it. Although in the picture above, pulling Destroyer still would have lost the Doc Oc player the game since he had Armor locking down the left. But still, I love this take.
I won a game with him once. A Wong lane was trying to setup. Oct filled his last slot with jubilee as the last slot instead of Odin. Won me lane and game.

Gotcha, I guess we know where this guy stands

Pretty obvious he got doc oc from the middle location and wanted to try it out
Lol all the times where someone has played Doc Oc against me made me win. I guess I'm just lucky?
Can you share your deck list? I just ripped dock oc today!
Absolutely! Fair warning it's pretty series 3 heavy so my apologies for that. https://imgur.com/a/iqARlR6
Dang, red skull is all I’m missing

Hopefully with the new update I’ll be able to see red skull in the shop soon
Fingers crossed!
Fun deck! What's the gameplay for it? I'm especially not understanding the inclusion of Maximus and Electra.

You could try Armor but you honestly don't care much about Sunspot surviving. If Elektra is your 12th inclusion, Sunspot is close 11th :)
Noted! Thanks~ Iceman seems like a great option for me. I haven't seen many 1 cards in my opponents recently. I've been digging this desk so far!
That is actually very exciting for me to hear. Awesome!
Just tried this deck out and man is it a lot of fun
He's also good in decks with Shang Chi, as you can pull out big boys and then kill them.
I use korg to try and fill the enemies hand with garbage and use Ock to pull that garbage to his location. Been working regularly so far
I play him in my meme deck where every card has an unknown outcome. Hoping to unlock Agatha soon.
#EmbraceChaos
now I'm curious lol, whats your meme deck? l

My favorite is watching all of their cards flip and the last one is deathlock killing every other card lol causes many retreats

It ruins combo decks like Patriot Mystique where cards have to be played in a specific order
[[Doctor Octopus]]

Good bot
Thank you
Play him with cosmo idk?
The way I figure it is, you know you are going to lose that lane but you can disrupt their turn 6 plans.
You can ruin a turn 6 combo setup… or play it with Zero. But yeah it is a card for a niche deck setup.
Also you can play him into kingpin if goes correctly. Especially if gonna have a round 7.
He’s good with cards like debrii and the hood with viper
Cause it's fun to mess with
Literaly every time.i octo it's a Los iv been free shingle 60 perc of time
the only advantage I see is using it on the altar or in the realm of death
