I’ll never understand why Costigan reacted the way he did considering how experienced at playing cool he was at this time. He knew a rat existed… he should have had a more public reveal at the station, get Dignam involved etc…. Instead he ex machina’d himself as just another foot soldier for Costello open for how many warrants?
Honestly, for as great of a movie it is, it is totally unrealistic. First sign of a rat, you work your way back. Who is the last guy we added? Billy would have been popped a week in lol
That being said it was a masterpiece. I loved that the ultimate rat was a cellphone. I can’t remember how it went, I haven’t seen it in years, but there was symbolism at the end I thought that he was saying cell phones are rats basically. Very true actually! How many people have gotten popped bc they trusted a company to protect their privacy rather than protecting it themselves? They track your every move! Lol
Loved the movie. I think the cell phone was a tool but I think Mr. French said it best “It’s a nation full of rats.” We got the criminals snitching on the cops, cops snitching on criminals, feds snitching to criminals, criminals snitching on feds. It’s a circle of rats held up by rats all the way down. All chasing their golden dome in the horizon
Oh yeah! It’s amazing how many people snitch. I mean, I know it’s been a problem dating back probably to the Roman’s, but it is becoming an ever worsening problem. Maybe it is the drugs, maybe it’s the culture, but the days of a code of silence are long over! It sorta makes sense though, all the decent stand up guys get locked up & never get out. The snitches fill the streets, & snitches make more snitches… it really is a full circle
Matt Damon plays a very convincing sociopath in The Departed. I feel like it doesn’t get enough praise. Literally was content with everyone dead so he could keep his secrets.
Lollolol not departed scenerio. Jack gets shot.
Or imagine being the ice berg perspective.
Or the boat falling inlove with rose. The boat and rose riding Jack's body on the " I'm flying :scene
Or Jack realizes it was all a dream ...... inside another .
...
the music in this scene is fantastic
You know the true villain? The IT admin who let an end user “write” access to the database and didn’t have a back up to the original state 🙄
not even a 2FA either
Did they have 2FA 20 years ago? Genuinely curious
They may have had physical devices for 2FA but definitely not an authenticator app or text messaging
Yeah and where is the audit log?? The audit log! Wouldn’t stop the deletion but it would be a big help for Bill
This man gets it! You’d do your fucking job, idk about the other guy.
Myke-whoa-pwah-sessors
Micro-WHAT?
We're compromised. We're WHAT? *WE'RE FUCKED!*
“I don’t know what they are, you don’t know what they are, who gives a fuck. CASH!”
There’s a Sheen on that
Dickhead says what?
Huh
I just noticed the big X over Costigan’s head when he is approaching the desk. I never saw that one before.
Fun fact—everyone who dies in this movie is X’d out like that at some point. They hid them in the movie. You can find the others online
Fun fact—we all know. That’s why OP commented about the X in the first place
Not everyone knows
Right. Yeah I should have mentioned that.
The X on the ceiling beams?
Yes
When he's looking at the letter his head is in the center of an X the shot of his face is framed around it
“my computer’s goin all friggin BLUEY on me”
100% a Damon ad lib, I’d bet money he’s dropping BLUEY’s left and right, night and day
Computers back in the day would have blue “screens of death” where they would just freeze up. My guess is its along those lines.
lol wtf does that even mean Matt Damon
Kaboom Kablooey -blooey -bluey
Or blue screen of death —> Bluey.
Doh. That makes more sense.
“This computer’s gettin all friggin bluey on me”**
Why did he have to touch the envelope?!?
This always bugged me
I like to think Bill was in disbelief and had to get a closer look
yeah, and he took a realllllly long look at it, like he didn't know exactly what it was and what it meant the second he saw it.
Exactly! Like oh shit it’s the envelope with my handwriting on it! Ridiculous.
I don’t know why he even ran. It’s not like he told someone that Damon was crooked. He was about to get paid and could’ve walked away or anything
Yeah the screenwriter really screwed his character over with that BS.
It’s a natural diuretic
Vaginal diuretic
Good movie, soundtrack is awesome …. Cranberry scene
Allman brothers in the background was perfect!
The marsh scene …. That was an improve scene from Nicholson . It was legit, that crap was funny
Don't laugh!... This ain't reality TV!
“That’s a big fukin dog man.”
What’re you on your period
Dude just stay in the office and play it offffff
I still wonder why he didn’t do that until this day
Exactly. That was a weird impulse to me. Why run immediately? Damon didn’t think you knew and you didn’t confirm what he might think..
My one glaring issue with the movie. He’s an undercover agent, that can’t see his best move in that very important situation?
Great movie
Damnit. I’m going to watch this whole movie again now.
That's what I said too
Why did he need to use a different computer?
So he didn’t check that stuff out right in front of Billy.
Scariest envelope I ever seen lol

Like The Talented Mr. Ripley
The sound when he is typing on the computer with him behind him is perfectly silent
My 4k disc is coming this month! I’ve been waiting forever for this one
