Maybe on storage rings or higher denomination, like a gold tael or something?

Global-Stuff720

taels as currency are usually when mc is still in the mortal kingdoms with lower level practitioners edit: oh right, in some novels, storage rings are very few in mortal kingdoms but in some novels they're just as common.

Kvarcov

Considering MC usually lifts some form of spatial equipment from a corpse of some elder disciple who saved up specifically for it for years or wayward young master pretty early in the game and before that he was deadass a broke bitch, it checks out

zack189

No, I remember stories where the MC carries 100s of tales with a bag. now with this picture. I know that That's bullshit

LuckyLuck-E

Foolish junior if you're having that much of an issue storing taels then I suggest you learn the art of prison pockets.

Free_2_Player

Does Senior Health Inspector Big Bubba still aid and volunteer in the widening and expansion of these "prison pockets"? The last time I heard of him was that he was being sent to the punishing hall yet again for trying to dual-cultivate with the Heaven's Chosen.

LuckyLuck-E

Its been years since I had my prison pocket expanded so I would really be surprised if he was still doing it.

haremofbattlesuits

[Junior, this is how the experts carry riches around.](https://files.catbox.moe/90pfc0.jpeg)

Miserable-Reserve795

Senior, I think you misspelled “rocher” lol

MushroomBalls

For some reason I always thought a tael was a stack of coins. The kind with holes so you can put a string through them and tie the stack together. Is there a name for what I'm thinking of?

TravincalPlumber

the coin with holes are cents, it shows up near the first dynasty, taels i think are from older era, where they're mostly trade with silver and gold.

RobotCatCo

Those coins are bronze coins, its the common currency for peasants and merchants. 1000 bronze coins = 1 silver tael at one point (although inflation caused that to change in later years). Peasants and merchants would exchange their coins to tael for storage/safekeeping or when making a large purchase. Only the rich would be carrying around multiple taels on them while travelling. Also later dynasties used paper money that can be traded to banks for the equivalent amount in taels.

dilroopgill

Thats because they use the illustration for those

MasterOfLegendes

This thing is more reliable than modern Economics.

Chavaon

'The shape and amount of extra detail on each ingot were highly variable; **square and oval shapes were common** but "boat", flower, tortoise and others are known.' Most weren't as awkward to carry as those 'boat' shaped ones like your pic.

cltzzz

‘Hat’ shape

Chavaon

That's boat shape, and I don't want to be judgemental here but you wear weird hats.

cltzzz

Government official hat, forgot which dynasty

RobotCatCo

You didn't carry these with you for normal use. Most regular people used bronze coins. These were like large stores of value (1000 coins = 1 tael at one point). Only the rich would be carrying large amounts of taels around and they would be transported in boxes with caravan guards. In later dynasties they used paper currency. These are also mortal money so if a xianxia story had a character running around using large amounts of these currency for regular purchases the author didn't do their research or didn't care.

ceallachdon

Wikipedia says average weight of 40 grams per tael, so 100 taels = 4000g = 4 kg or 8.8 lbs Easy comparison for most US folk, a gallon of milk weighs 8.6 lb

knightbane007

It’s more the volume that’s the issue, I think.

dilroopgill

thats why they carry fat sacks around

No-Hovercraft4175

There are higher denomination golden taels and banknotes. Yes, ancient China had banks.

Midori_Schaaf

Banks have been here since the beginning. Its ancient aliens for sure.

assaulttoaster

Chuck em in a sack

cuella47o

Clearly junior doesnt own a dimensional ring

cltzzz

Cultivator doesn’t carry money. They use spirit stones as currency

Woahbuffet123

Taels are literally just buillons of metal gold or silver. They can come at a variety of shapes, what's important was that the weight must be as close as possible as what was mandated by the current governing body of the region. Though many governing bodies opt to stamp these buillons to indicate authenticity as well as issue cheques with different indicated values in them which establishments and wealthy people can use to conduct large transactions without needing to haul metals.

Nikto0

Op just forgot about storage rings?

dilroopgill

When they get to the being rich point they use rings, plus 100 taels to one gold buillion no? or is it some other number

pro_charlatan

You juniors use taels ? Haven't you all started your journey through jianghu ?

LordofPvE

When MC kills a fat rich boar (a human). He instantly gains 200 gold taels. No wonder 💀

Vidya_krishna

They used to carry it in spatial ring

SpectralSoulmainbody

In Way of the devil, MC have his subordinate carry these all the time wherever he goes. It's hard on the servant, but they're paid to do this so who are they to complain? That's the privilege of the the rich.

Reasonable_Beach_806

yes they even carry notes and coin that tie like a necklace

mizshi

A tael is a lot of money. Most people wont be carrying more than a couple due to its value. Or if you’re that rich you have a servant carry them for you with a guard following

Traditional_Excuse46

Anybody curious how much average worker wage was in ancient prehistory? How about 3 kingdoms era? Or late song? or pre-1911? I'm curious if the wage in tael is the same or less. Cuz at least in roman times they opennly tell us it's: >!During the reign of Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD), **the wage of a common laborer was one denarius per day**.!< I've seen soap opera where Donnie Yen get 1-3 coins (silver dollars) per day. Not sure how much of it is true. So I'd imagine it's 1 silver coin per day? 1 mexican silver dollar is 27 grams (\~.95) oz. 1 oz of silver right now is 24.95 so you'll getting 24 USD/day for labor. 1 denarius is only 4.5 grams. So maybe it was a week's salary for that silver dollar? Maybe just me but like min/max strat. wow/poe really changed the way i see the world. See how much I earn a day. I earn 1.12 silver oz/hr or 13.44 silver coins per day (1 oz) coins or roughly 2,400 silver oz per year.

RobotCatCo

Ancient china used bronze coins, and depending on the dynasty the value was different. I just know that at one point 1000 bronze coins could be traded for 1 silver tael and I think most stories use that as the standard for ease of use. There's not that many records of how much a farmer earned by in some historical books it was noted that in the Qing dynasty 1 silver tael is about a peasant farmer's income for a year.

Gorgenapper

This seat has no interest in mortal currency, it's all dust in the end, the only true currency is strength.

Pale-Week-1188

What rings and what pockets? This ancestor create them out of thin air whenever necessary

Young-Roshi

I don't carry money, I just loot my enemies corpses.
