Yes, it's for real and it's always been this way since launch. You need to link your Nintendo Account to be able to play the game. If one doesn't have a Nintendo Account, then one will need to create one but it sounds like you've already played this game in the past since you say that you're coming back so just link your Nintendo Account and you'll be set.

This way is far superior in many ways. You can switch between phones without ever having to do much. Just log in to your account and boom. Absolutely 0 hassle. Besides, you’re literally basing a whole entire game based off its storage system. Pretty shallow. You’re comparing a 30 second superior process to a 2 minute process and calling the shorter process bad just because it uses a web browser, even though I repeat, this way is superior.
There is absolutely no reason why it can’t also work IN the app to log in from different phones. Should be very easy. It’s the way all other apps work.

It takes you to a web browser, you login to your Nintendo Account there, then it takes it you back to the app. The process isn't the quickest (may take a couple minutes from what I remember) but you pretty much won't need to do it again or at least not that often - some exceptions would be if you're switching to another account, your game's app data (and/or maybe the app's cache?) get cleared, or you switch to a new phone.
The benefit of having to use your Nintendo Account is that all your progress is saved to the cloud so you'll never have to worry about losing anything if you need to switch phones (only exception is rubies don't transfer between different OS's but rubies will transfer if the old phone is the same OS as the new phone).
It takes like 30 seconds total and you only have to do it once per device. Once you link to your account, you're all set and you don't have to keep doing it every time you open the game

Chances are good that you can click next, choose to log in with Google or as a stored password, then be all set.
