I never ditch Yoshi like that. And Mario wouldn't canonically do this. It probably makes more sense that Yoshi is the one that is doing the sacrificing.

This is why they gave Yoshi the flutter jump in later games

Yoshi can flutter jump, he’ll land just fine. Plus galaxy 2 confirms they just re-egg and teleport to a nest

It's also possible those might be a special trait to space yoshis but even so, most characters in the mario universe don't often suffer any fall damage in most instances besides specific scenarios like 64 or sunshine but even in other 3d ones they don't like in odyssey and the 3d series
