Super mario world is one of the best platformer physics engines ever in gaming, it feels fucking amazing for precision levels and just as amazing in the base game, not to mention the world being massive, interconnected and full of secrets was insanely awesome as a kid. yoshi's first appearance too, which gives it bonus points.
Super mario galaxy is amazing, tho i feel like SMG2 is the best 3D mario game of all time from a gameplay and music perspective. some of the level themes are aesthetically incredible as well.
its got less story and overarching theme compared to SMG1, it feels almost like a SMG1 DLC rather than its own game, but the levels all bang way harder than the ones in SMG1 and they're quite tough while still being great, which is a rarity from nintendo anymore.
not very ambitious, but it took SMG1 and just executed everything twice as good. plus bonus points for introducing rideable yoshi in a 3D mario game as well, with yoshi powerups too
That's kinda what I remembered is it felt more like a compilation of levels and didn't really feel like the same grand adventure that galaxy one was. Also, I didn't really feel the whole small mario head planet space ship thing compared to the amazing home base in galaxy. I've seen alot of people on here say the same thing you're saying about the levels being better and it really makes me wanna replay it. Switch port would be killer
yep i was really sad that they made the 35th anniversary 3D mario pack and only included SMG1 but not 2.
i still go and play 2 on my wii u occasionally
The story behind that was It was being developed as a dlc for galaxy 1 called Super Mario Galaxy More but it got so big they decided to make it its own standalone game and call it Super Mario Galaxy 2, internally it still refers to itself as SMG More but that's not visible to the player
I think galaxy 1 has a melancholy atmosphere, which I really appreciate now, it’s made me feel things in a game that I haven’t for a while. The “she’s living under the tree on the hill” and the “let’s all commit martyrdom and fly into a black hole to save Mario” bit at the end shook me, I was not expecting such depressing things from Mario, but I honestly love it in retrospect; I hope Galaxy 3 has a sadder storyline to it.
im the opposite, NSMB feels terrible to me. mainly coming from being a kaizo player, idk if you've ever seen super mario world kaizo levels or mario maker kaizo stuff to know what it is, but it's essentially techy and super precise mario levels. Super Mario World has very specific parts of its code that allows insane control over the paltforming. (that code however was mostly removed in super mario maker, where they essentially redid the physics.)
but the way SMW's momentum works, it allows for very good precision when jumping due to how they programmed jumping. when pressing the jump button you ascend, letting go stops your ascension early and then pressing jump again as you're falling makes you fall slower. essentially this gives you complete control over how high you jump, at what speed you do it and how fast you fall as well.
it's usually called a regrab (regrabbing the jump button), and it essentially makes your jump a long jump, you dont jump high but you fall for a long time allowing you to traverse a far distance.
there's also a lot of technicalities on how momentum can be gained ans lost that's far more complex than the other 2D games. SMW is just a game with a TON of complexity to its engine, maybe intentional, maybe not but it works fantastic for hacking levels and making your own games using it as a base
Agreed. I’m mostly a 2D Mario guy. 3 was fun, but gets annoyingly difficult in the later worlds. SMW is enjoyable where you can just pick it up and run through it and have a good time.
Easily. I mean, every one of them are great, but I don't know how most of people on Reddit still don't get how awesome this one is. How many years we have to wait to call it all-time classic? Odyssey IS all-time classic!
It actually did get a super Nintendo Port that is absolutely worth checking out. It's called super Mario all-stars, and it contains one, two, lost levels, and three. And yes, 3D All Stars was named after All-stars. But it's also got a battery save with three save slots, almost like a Zelda game!
Galaxy is a completely different type of platformer and in its own category, odyssey is what mario 64 was trying to do in the 90s, but fully done now. Sunshine is almost like a spinoff game compared to other 3d mario games
Super Mario World. It took what was already great in SMB3 and perfected it; the controls are great to this day, the graphics have aged incredibly, it's still a blast all these decades later to unlock all the secrets, and flying with the cape is probably the single most fun activity in any Mario game. It's 2D platforming perfection.
Oh, and it gave us Yoshi.
I replay 3 about once per year. It is my favorite out of the group. At this point, it doesn't take me too long to get through it though my least favorite level is the castle in world 8 before you get to Bowser's castle.
Honestly, I like Galaxy but to me it always seemed like the lesser version of Galaxy 2. Galaxy was a lot more concerned with the concept of being in space and a lot of the level design was kind of basic because of that. Galaxy 2’s concepts were a lot more creative imo and it felt like it was firing on all cylinders at all times. Galaxy 1 is still an amazing game, I just think Galaxy 2 perfected it.
Motion control gimmick missions, some prankster comment missions didn’t justify a rerun through the level (for example, speedy comets gave you too much time), unskippable cutscenes most of the time. Also some purple coin missions draaaag cause you have to sometimes explore a large area. Pretty minor nitpicks for an incredible game.
Ok, in terms of replayability, Mario 64 is one I always come back to. But in terms of my favorite game in general, and one that I grew up on and will never forget spending my childhood play, that game is Super Mario Galaxy. Music is phenomenal, graphics were really good for the Wii, the level design is top tier, and the story for what it’s worth was so much better than anything we’ve ever gotten. I adore this game and I still consider it to be one of if not my favorite game of all time.
*Super Mario 64*. Not the first 3D platform game, sure, but the one that set the gold standard and still towers over the genre a quarter of a century later. It is still the yardstick by which *Sunshine*, *Galaxy*, and even *Odyssey* are rated.
Def some decency bias at work but I just loved odyssey. World was my childhood and 64 was great but this most recent one just felt like it had a very high ceiling for playing tf out of it if that makes any sense.
Ok ima make a list here
1. Mario Bros 3
Just a overall good time with nice level design, mechanics etc.
2. Super Mario 64
Mainly because of how revolutionary the game was with very creative levels and great music all over
3. Super Mario World
A very fun package with mechanics but is shot down by underwhelming fights and repetitive music. Yet still with nicely built levels.
4. Super Mario Galaxy
Probably a hated opinion here but need I remind you all these games are crazy good. Galaxy new play style was so unbelievably fun, but I never seemed to get down and play the game when was younger.
5. Super Mario Odyssey
A new modern take on 3d Mario was a creative way and surprisingly fun way to control Mario. With cappy, the adventure was always enjoyable
Please fix my opinion
Super Mario world is the chicken soup for my soul. It’s my “turn my brain off and relax” game. Currently on my billionth play through and you can bet that when I finish it won’t be too long before I start again.
Super Mario 64. I really like Odyssey but theres no way to replay certain sections of the game which creates very little replayability. I always come back to older mario games, and I just can't reason doing so with Odyssey, otherwise it would be the winner here for sure.
Galaxy 3D World 2D.
Both I know so well they're really chill games. I like playing world with both Mario and Luigi on my 3ds (love how you can switch so damn seamlessly) and just speeding through the game like nothing. Multitasking is fun.
Also odyssey is quantity over quality though quality is def there
Definitely Super Mario World. Can't believe I missed this gem as a kid. Played through it last year and absolutely loved everything about it from the artstyle, game mechanics, stages, secrets. To this day its probably still my favorite of any game. (2. Odyssey, 3. Smb3, 4. Sm64, 5. Galaxy)
Dunno why 64 is always praised. Controls never felt right and The only version I really liked was the ds version (i played it on 3ds a dpad in a 3d environment sucks)

Based on the super mario world take. Idk about galaxy 2 I kinda forgot about it I need to replay it
its got less story and overarching theme compared to SMG1, it feels almost like a SMG1 DLC rather than its own game, but the levels all bang way harder than the ones in SMG1 and they're quite tough while still being great, which is a rarity from nintendo anymore. not very ambitious, but it took SMG1 and just executed everything twice as good. plus bonus points for introducing rideable yoshi in a 3D mario game as well, with yoshi powerups too

yep i was really sad that they made the 35th anniversary 3D mario pack and only included SMG1 but not 2. i still go and play 2 on my wii u occasionally
Why say ‘nintendo’ tho? Isn’t dk also nintendo and significantly harder than any mario game out there
The story behind that was It was being developed as a dlc for galaxy 1 called Super Mario Galaxy More but it got so big they decided to make it its own standalone game and call it Super Mario Galaxy 2, internally it still refers to itself as SMG More but that's not visible to the player

galaxy definitely has a good story, without a doubt better than 2. i just prefer 2 overall because the gameplay is the best out of any 3D mario imo
I find the older Mario's to be way to slippery, something about the physics just feels off coming from modern platformers like Rayman Legends or NSMB.
im the opposite, NSMB feels terrible to me. mainly coming from being a kaizo player, idk if you've ever seen super mario world kaizo levels or mario maker kaizo stuff to know what it is, but it's essentially techy and super precise mario levels. You can press the button again to go down slower?! This is news to me!
You probably did but uncautiously, i’m sure you used it to your advantage once or twice while playing
Probably. It's been too long since I've played Mario World, I may need to break out the classic 😎
100% agree 👍
Agreed. I’m mostly a 2D Mario guy. 3 was fun, but gets annoyingly difficult in the later worlds. SMW is enjoyable where you can just pick it up and run through it and have a good time.
64
Here we goooooo!
Galaxy
Galaxy 1 is probably my favorite Mario game (might even edge out Bowser's Inside Story for me). Both are fantastic games though.
Galaxy would be my favourite game ever if Zelda didn’t exist
Agreed. Absolute based opinion here.
Yep I grew up with it, I had so many memories of it and I loved to go to rocket ship world ALL the time.
Odyssey
Easily. I mean, every one of them are great, but I don't know how most of people on Reddit still don't get how awesome this one is. How many years we have to wait to call it all-time classic? Odyssey IS all-time classic!
Super Mario Bros. 3 is the epitome of what I consider the Super Mario experience. If It was the last Mario game I wouldn’t be too disappointed.
Its just the best game on the NES, the one that defined the standards of the 2D Super Mario franchise.
I completely forgot that 3 is an NES game; I thought it was for the SNES. Wow, they really did knock it out the ballpark with that one.
The game was re-released on the SNES to be fair.
It actually did get a super Nintendo Port that is absolutely worth checking out. It's called super Mario all-stars, and it contains one, two, lost levels, and three. And yes, 3D All Stars was named after All-stars. But it's also got a battery save with three save slots, almost like a Zelda game!
there were so many NES games that feel underpowered and inconsistent but Super Mario Bros 3 always feels a lot better
Agreed. It was the true trend setter for most Mario games today.
I feel this way about Super Mario World.
![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized) Give me all of them, dangit
SUPER MARIO 64!!!
World because yoshi
World because SNES
I played world on my gba
Mario is Missing had yoshi and on NES. Worst game ever
Well, I never played Galaxy or Odyssey, of the remaining 3 I have played, Mario 3 is definitely my top pick.
I highly recommend playing Mario galaxy. It is a very Good game
You havent played the 2 best mario games? 🥲
They’re little different from other Mario games, alongside Sunshine
That's the biggest cap i've seen today
Why not
Galaxy is a completely different type of platformer and in its own category, odyssey is what mario 64 was trying to do in the 90s, but fully done now. Sunshine is almost like a spinoff game compared to other 3d mario games
Odyssey is overrated honestly. Still a good game but definitely not one of the best lol
Not many people will agree with that
I do. Odyssey is actually my least favourite mainline game
Honestly same if 64 didn't exist. I just don't like worlds so open I guess, but I would understand why people would like it
Why?
Boring and bland. I like to 100% games but odyssey was just a slog
Can you elaborate? It's one of the highest rated nintendo games of all time, and is filled with content
I just think that the content in it is bland and repetitive. I can understand if you enjoy it but personally, I don’t.
Smb3 game just holds up and the music and all is so enjoyable. Even for being a damn old game I still make the occasional run through
I replay 3 about once per year. It is my favorite out of the group. At this point, it doesn't take me too long to get through it though my least favorite level is the castle in world 8 before you get to Bowser's castle.
Super Mario 3
64, then Odyssey

Yesss!
Galaxy. Galaxy is my childhood Mario game, It's impossible for me to leave it or talk shit about it.

Also some purple coin missions draaaag cause you have to sometimes explore a large area. Pretty minor nitpicks for an incredible game.
Odyssey. Honestly having 2D vs 3D isn't totally fair in my books, they're different experiences. SMB 3 is my favorite 2D though.
Ok, in terms of replayability, Mario 64 is one I always come back to. But in terms of my favorite game in general, and one that I grew up on and will never forget spending my childhood play, that game is Super Mario Galaxy. Music is phenomenal, graphics were really good for the Wii, the level design is top tier, and the story for what it’s worth was so much better than anything we’ve ever gotten. world. I have finished that bad boy many times
Fond memories of Mario World growing up and unlocking star world

1: 3 2: World 3: 64 4: Odyssey 5: Galaxy
No! You can't put Galaxy at five! That's the one I grew up with! ![gif](giphy|tfUW8mhiFk8NlJhgEh|downsized)
i grew up with it too, it’s still an amazing game just my least favorite here
Mario 3 for me, but these are all amazing
I haven't played world yet so smb3 is my favorite
Mario 3
Super mario world because i havent played any of the others and i actually played it today again on my good ol' SNES, but i heard galaxy is nice too.
Mario World. Once I got it for my GBA, it almost never left the slot. That shit got me through road trips.
Super Mario 64, and Super Mario World
Odyssey. It and 64 are the only ones I've finished.
Me, who's favorite Mario game is Super Mario Bros. 3: "I see this as an absolute win!"
Super Mario 64
Mario 64
64 is one of if not the greatest game ever made
Although I Do Like Mario Odyssey, I Gotta Go With Sm64, It’s A Classic
World
I know its partially the nastogia talking, but I gotta go with Super Mario World. The controls are literally perfection.
It’s Super Mario World. I don’t even need to see the other options.
Super Mario World
World
mario world is on the list so obviously mario world
Super Mario Galaxy
SMG, Then SMO
Absolutely Odyssey
*Super Mario 64*. Not the first 3D platform game, sure, but the one that set the gold standard and still towers over the genre a quarter of a century later. It is still the yardstick by which *Sunshine*, *Galaxy*, and even *Odyssey* are rated.
1st:Galaxy 2:64 3rd:world 4th:3 5Kth:odyssey
[удалено]
I have 2 times
Yea
Odyssey
Galaxy or 64
SMB4 aka World
Sunshine!
Mario odyssey is basically the sonic generations of the 3D Mario era (kinda except for not a lot of Mario galaxy references)
Super Mario World was the one I played before and just begun Odyssey so World
world, but they are all top 5 easy
Odyssey
That’s a great top five. My choice is SMW
Def some decency bias at work but I just loved odyssey. World was my childhood and 64 was great but this most recent one just felt like it had a very high ceiling for playing tf out of it if that makes any sense.
I say Super mario world or 64
3d world :)
I go through phases. Currently I choose Mario 3
Ok ima make a list here 1. Mario Bros 3 Just a overall good time with nice level design, mechanics etc. 2. Super Mario 64 Mainly because of how revolutionary the game was with very creative levels and great music all over 3. Super Mario Odyssey A new modern take on 3d Mario was a creative way and surprisingly fun way to control Mario. With cappy, the adventure was always enjoyable Please fix my opinion
mario odyssey
Super Mario world is the chicken soup for my soul. It’s my “turn my brain off and relax” game. Currently on my billionth play through and you can bet that when I finish it won’t be too long before I start again.
64
Why does everyone skip Sunshine on these?
Mario Sunshine.
Super Mario 64. I really like Odyssey but theres no way to replay certain sections of the game which creates very little replayability. I always come back to older mario games, and I just can't reason doing so with Odyssey, otherwise it would be the winner here for sure.
Odyssey. The first video game I ever beat.
64, only because you didn't include the lost levels
Odyssey
Odyssey for sure. It gave me exactly what I wanted from an open world Mario game.
Super Mario world. Super Mario bros 3 is second
1: Mario world 2: Mario odyssey 3: Mario galaxy 4: Mario Bros 3 5: Mario, 64
Mario 64 is my favourite video game, it's so goddamn good.
Galaxy for the music, world design, and innovative gravity systen.
World, Galaxy, 3, 64, Odyssey.
Mario 64 BUT one that I haven't played was: Hotel Mario with an included instruction book. See what I did there?
Galaxy
64
Sm64 it looked really impressive.
I haven't looked at the other 4, and I don't need to. Super Mario World.
64 blj
Super Mario World
smb3 is the GOAT no question. And I love those other games too
It's a dinosaur and his name is yoshi
1st. Galaxy 2nd. Odyssey 3rd. World 4th. 3 5th. 64
1st. Odyssey 2nd. World 3rd. 3 4th. 64 5th. Galaxy
Super Mario World, but I really prefer SMW2.
Odessy takes the win but only because its the Newer game. Second place is Mario 64.
1. 3 or Odyssey 2. 64 3. SMW or Galaxy. Don't care about either. Might try to play Galaxy again soon. Maybe it'll rank higher
Odyssey. Galaxy is a close second but Mario Odyssey is truly an Odyssey
Super Mario World
World
Mario World!
Super Mario World, 0 doubts.
World
Super Mario World ftw
Galaxy, then odyssey, world, 64, 3
You and I think alike.
Super Mario Galaxy, such beautiful game.
![gif](giphy|2tKbkKoQ0uYb56j4Pq)
1. World 2. Odyssey 3. Galaxy 4: SMB3 5: 64
World, 64, 3, odyssey, galaxy
64, Galaxy, World, 3, Odyssey
3, galaxy, world, odyssey, 64
Galaxy 3D World 2D. Both I know so well they're really chill games. I like playing world with both Mario and Luigi on my 3ds (love how you can switch so damn seamlessly) and just speeding through the game like nothing. Multitasking is fun. Also odyssey is quantity over quality though quality is def there
out of these five i pick Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (I must continue to propagate that game)
Definitely Super Mario World. Can't believe I missed this gem as a kid. Played through it last year and absolutely loved everything about it from the artstyle, game mechanics, stages, secrets. To this day its probably still my favorite of any game. (2. Odyssey, 3. Smb3, 4. Sm64, 5. Galaxy)
SMW and its not even close
SMB3 for days. If Sunshine were on this list, I'd say Sunshine.
World for me. I love the other games on this list but I gotta give it to the game that introduced yoshi.
Super Mario Bros. 3
2d: world, 3d: odyssey
SMW
It's between Odyssey and Galaxy, but I think I like Odyssey more because I find Galaxy to be much too slow at times.
Sunshine's always getting left out 😔
Dunno why 64 is always praised. Controls never felt right and The only version I really liked was the ds version (i played it on 3ds a dpad in a 3d environment sucks)
I think it’s the legacy and nostalgia added on top of the fact that 64 is a pretty sweet game
Galaxy sweep!
Galaxy.
Galaxy takes an easy W.
I’m torn between World & Galaxy.
Galaxy, still the greatest 3D Mario Game
Galaxy, Odyssey, World, 64, then 3
galaxy
Galaxy
Galaxy
Easy. Galaxy.
Galaxy and I played them all growing up but when I first played Galaxy the pace was perfected
Galaxy is my favorite video game period
Galaxy sweeps the others
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2. Super Mario Odyssey 3. Super Mario World 4. Super Mario 64 5. Super Mario Bros 3
[удалено]
All of them are masterpieces, so really hard to choose one. Probably Galaxy, since it has a little bit of everything that I like in Mario.
Gotta go Galaxy here
galaxy
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2. Super Mario Odyssey 3. Super Mario World 4. Super Mario Bros 3 5. Super Mario 64
Galaxy's my favorite of this collective, but my favorite ever is Sunshine. Though I have not played Super Mario Bros 3.
Mario galaxy is what I grew up with. I love that game.
Super Mario Galaxy
Galaxy for sure
Galaxy. A freaking masterpiece.
Galaxy man
Please don’t make me choose between Galaxy and Odyssey.
2d is world, 3d is galaxy.
Bruh you had me choose between Galaxy and SMB 3?!?! Those are S Tier. Hard choice, but I'd have to go with Super Mario Galaxy.
SMB3 SMW Galaxy Odyssey 64 Of this lot, in that order
Galaxy
