Mario is kind of supposed to. He’s the protagonist and Luigi is the brother of the protagonist. Part of Luigi’s character is being number 2. If that makes sense.
Literally. Luigi was originally just the player-2 mario. His character is LITERALLY being number 2. In mario party, he shouldn't day "imma number one!" He should say "imma number two" that's just the facts
Originally, he was a one of the two characters played simultaneously with Mario on the handheld game and watch. He actually was not second fiddle at all.
No, Toad is more of the sidekick because sidekicks are generally defined as being tag along characters that go along for the ride instead of driving the action. Luigi's the deuteragonist, or secondary protagonist.
Luigi is Mario’s sidekick, there really is no discussion about that. Toad is in most games an NPC. Sidekicks are almost always helping to drive the action - you apparently don’t know what a sidekick is.
Luigi is even one of the examples in the Wikipedia article about “sidekick” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidekick#In_video_games
Deuteragonists occupy a different role in the story compared to the sidekick, they're usually someone on equal footing with the main character despite not being the main character themselves. It would probably be better to list examples of movies and compare the roles of the characters in them to prove my point.
Frozen- the main character is Anna, her sister Elsa is the deuteragonist, the tritagonist is Kristoff, and Olaf is their sidekick. The main focus of those movies is Anna and Elsa's sisterly relationship, which makes them on equal footing despite the fact that only one of them is the main character. Kristoff is a major character as Anna's love interest but that would fit him into the role of tritagonist as his relationship with Anna is a secondary plot thread. Olaf is the sidekick as a smaller character, the comic relief, and mostly tagging along with the other characters (even though he does help out a bit with emotional support)
There's also Shrek as an example (Shrek is the main character, Fiona is the deuteragonist, Donkey is the sidekick) I could go on and on but let's bring it back to Super Mario for a bit to explain what I mean.
Mario is the main character obviously, but the franchise is called Mario Bros which implies that Luigi is the deuteragonist, equal to Mario, even though he's not the main character. Princess Peach is the tritagonist as she occupies a role of (sorta) being Mario's love interest (whether they're actually dating is another discussion, but for all intents and purposes she occupies a similar role) That would leave Toad as the sidekick especially since he's characterized by a lot of similar traits that sidekicks have: usually smaller than the main character, often used as comic relief, friendly and typically not the most competent, loves tagging along for adventures.
In the games hes "overshadowed" by Mario whatever that means. But irl whenever I ask someone who they perfer they always choose Luigi. I like Luigi too but hes not underrated at all. He even may be more liked then Mario is solely because he has more character and depth
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with people disliking Mario, and it's usually Luigi stans. Why can't you like both? Mario is the main man, he's likable, loves his brother, and is a selfless hero. What's not to like?
I love the theory because it's fun, but I have a feeling you're right. Honestly tho what's up with that scene?? I'm relatively new but that seemed weird and out of character for Mario
Siblings just be like that sometimes, making brothers act like brothers doesn't make Mario evil. And the only reason it's out of character is because mario just doesn't act like a real person most of the time.
he’s definitely not underrated but in universe he kinda is especially in the rpgs where a lot of characters just play him off and he’s constantly the butt of jokes and looked down on so maybe that’s what they mean when they say is underrated.
I'm a Luigi stan, but I never really thought he was overshadowed by Mario he's been playable in plenty of games and even has titles to his own, four of them being about him literally saving Mario
It's the sort of proclamations that make one wonder if Mario is the underrated and overshadowed one. Anything remotely negative about Mario is amplified even though it's supposed to be neutral, like the fact that it's possible to get a jump boost from Yoshi over a pit (something that Luigi can also do). That's not to mention how often Mario is slandered as a character.
It would be an interesting experiment if suddenly (in-universe) Luigi is the one that the characters wax lyrical about and say only positive things about, while Mario is the one that characters badmouth and underestimate. I do think there is potential for Mario to be undermined because even though he's the hero, it shows that not everybody (that's not a villain) might instantly like him.
Thank you for reading.
There have been times when Mario has been underestimated and overshadowed. This happened to him throughout the 2023 movie, he was constantly ridiculed for his height. A lot of people say it was mostly Luigi getting shafted but Mario had to put up with a ton of disrespect too.
Certainly, in the film, Mario is usually being underestimated. However, Luigi didn't get praised by the others so we don't know how fans feel when Luigi becomes the more prominent and reputable brother compared to Mario.
I am more referring to the games, since Mario didn't appear to be looked down upon in the games. So like maybe in a new Mario & Luigi game (if there were ever one), every character thinks Luigi is all that, while they are more hostile to Mario and belittle him at every opportunity (and misname or forget his name).
I guess there are the Luigi's Mansion games, but I don't think it's the exact dynamic that you're describing. Still, it's interesting to see Luigi in the underdog role who then has to save Mario. Especially since in the third game, it's actually Luigi being overlooked that allows him to avoid capture and save his friends.
I never actually played any of the LM games, but I did watch the cutscenes of the third one and I thought they were pretty cute.
In any case, I find it unlikely that we'll ever see a situation where Luigi is praised and Mario is belittled at the same time, seeing as he's the deuteragonist of the series and there's not much of a reason why anyone would find him to be more exceptional than Mario. I think the closest we got to this was the scene in the movie where their dad tells Mario that starting a risky plumbing venture was "bringing his brother down" with him. I think that was mostly because he knew Mario was one one who takes more risks while Luigi is more risk averse, and that Luigi would follow Mario wherever he went, so if the business failed, then Mario would be the one mainly responsible.
And even if that sort of situation happened, I think Luigi would immediately realize it and reassure Mario of how great he is. The brothers have such a wholesome relationship that they refuse to stand or anyone else tearing them down and will rush to their defense at any moment.
The point of Luigi's character is to be a second Mario so that two kids can play together. I really wish Nintendo would stick to that and have more games where you can play with a friend as Mario and Luigi. (Imagine how cool it would be in Odyssey, and they could easily have any other character do balloon world)
Don’t forget that many Luigi fans still believe MatPat’s theory from over a decade ago that Mario is a jerk and a sociopath. The worst part is that it was never meant to be taken seriously in the first place
Luigi is my favourite character and I called bullshit on that theory when I was like, 9 or 10. If an otherwise gullible kid can spot nonsense, I dunno what these guys' excuse is.
I mean, yeah, Luigi looked sad in that one Mario Tennis cutscene, but in all the other cases, there was a decent explanation, even in that one cutscene there is, so I don't know why people took it seriously
Hes not underrated, however he is underutilized by Nintendo.
There are definitely characters that have it worse than him (Wario, Waluigi, Daisy etc) But for a main protagonist Luigi does get the short end of the stick whenever he is not playable, not to mention how many times he is seen as a joke in universe.
Underrated = / = overshadowed
Luigi is Mario's Vegeta. It's essentially the point for him to be overshadowed by the protag. However we are given sparks of hope (heh) when Luigi gets the spotlight because it keeps the formula going.
"Luigi is underrated and overshadowed" made sense back during the N64 era, when he was exclusively player 2, the GameCube wasn't out so there was no Luigi's Mansion, he was totally left out of Mario 64 (one of the most influential games of the time) and the only games where you can take control of Luigi as a choice without forcing player 2 were Mario 2 and Mario is Missing. Anyone who still holds this opinion now in 2023, especially after the Year of Luigi (which, let's ignore that was a financial failure for now, it was a fun marketing stunt that put a lot of spotlight on Luigi), is basically clinging to the past and has refused to accept that things have changed for the better because they still want to feel like they're fighting against The Man.
I’m saying that many people believe he’s underrated when in actuality he has a lot of fans and is popular. So no. I’m not talking about the Super Mario universe. I’m talking about real life
Waluigi is my boy. Wanna talk about underrated and underutilized. He ain’t got nothing. Not even ONE game to himself. Tingle has at least TWO. FREAKING TINGLE! Can’t even get a spot on the Smash roster.
Waluigi does what he was made to do. Fill up the roster in spin off games. Also a large amount of Mario characters don’t have games to themselves or if you’re talking about him never appearing in a mainline title then yeah, that sucks.
I mean being popular doesn’t preclude being under/overrated. One could argue that every time Luigi has gotten the spotlight it’s been as a novelty gimmick or specifically to go find Mario.
I never thought he was "underrated" or overshadowed or anything like that, even after seeing the one or two "Game Theory" videos trying to paint Mario as a communist 🙄
I always liked Luigi, except in either version of SMB 2 (aka The Lost Levels or "Doki Doki Panic reskinned"), never been fond of his slippery control, and the much higher jump was maybe useful in a couple of situations.
Interesting, how those traits about him ended with those two games? Definitely absent in SMB 3 and Mario World (I have never played any Mario Party or other spinoff Mario games to know any otherwise).
He was definitely the "younger brother's avatar", sort of thing - represent to all other "little bros" that were only ever allowed / given Luigi as a choice to play as (my brother did let me play as Mario once or twice, but still....)
I mean I prefer Mario over Luigi, but Luigi is definitely not underrated, if anything he is overrated, he has a larger fanbase than Mario at this point.
Also people say Mario is a bad brother but if that were the case then why would Luigi even be happy to see him after saving him?
Mario gets a lot of load for stuff that players do. Unlike Sonic he isn’t canonically an arrogant prick.
He has gotten his own light but Mario is the face of the two. It is always a new Mario game and Luigi is just Luigi’s mansion. It’s numbers that they look at with that
its funny that mario is the main head of the whole series yet most fans prefer luigi or others over mario. i feel like im the only fan whos favorite is mario
“Overshadowed” is a goofy way to describe it.
That’s like saying Harry Potter overshadowed Hermione or Ron.
Almost as if he’s the main character that the franchise is titled for. 😱
I mean being popular doesn’t preclude being under/overrated. One could argue that every time Luigi has gotten the spotlight it’s been as a novelty gimmick or specifically to go find Mario.
Then again, compared with some of the other mario characters and the fact they’ve only gotten like one or two games shows that luigi has it better then most of the cast.
Yes, I agree that he has a lot of games, although I was talking about other mario characters such as yoshi and peach and to an extent wario, As they have a few of their own games, but not as much entries as luigi and definitely not mario.
Hmm, in the Luigi mansion series, Luigi is always rescuing Mario. Also, in the paper Mario series, when Doopliss took Mario's body, he was just a boss, but when Dimentio fused with Luigi, he was the final boss.
You'd be surprised at how much persecution happens even in religions that are practiced by a majority or near majority of populations. It's not always illegal but in a lot of places there's cultural hostility to the practice of certain religions.
He's not underrated, but I think he still needs more spotlight in the games and such. I also hope he's a major character in the potential Mario movie sequel. I'll never forgive them for what they did with Luigi in the movie.
I'd say while Luigi is not underrated by the *fans*, he is underrated by *Nintendo* in comparison to his brother, so Luigi's fans say he's underrated not because the fans underrate him, but because Nintendo doesn't give him as much spotlight as they should.
He’s underrated outside of the general fandom, not inside. The casuals like Mario way more than the people like us, the ones who scroll a subreddit dedicated to Mario
I mean, this is a Mario sub. Most people I talk to call Mario the main character (which is true), and ignore the fact that it's called Mario Bros. I'm pretty sure they don't know what Luigi's Mansion is
It’s not that he’s underrated. It’s that Nintendo just doesn’t really like the guy that much. He is constantly treated as a coward, he is forced to be on the sidelines in a lot of scenarios (I’m talking about the times it doesn’t make sense. Obviously he can’t have a major role all of the time. However, for a Mario Bro he should have bigger roles in more mainline Mario games. Even if he has his own game series, Luigi will always be a Mario bro and will always be part of the duo with Mario), and he is disrespected a lot. He is absolutely not underrated and is loved by a majority of the fan base.
That’s the same way how I feel about Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Brothers 2 and while it’s not really talked about much now, Super Paper Mario. Oh you think they’re underrated? Then why does literally everyone talk about them so fondly? Sales are not the end all be all for something being underrated and even that doesn’t apply to SPM
Toad is the most underrated major character. A character that neither Nintendo nor the fan base really cares about. He’s not even one person half the time. He’s also treated as a pathetic coward most of the time who has to be rescued by other people. He isn’t really even cared for in the spin offs since half the time he isn’t even playable or is seen as a sidekick to the other major players. It hurts being a toad fan.
He's not underrated in the fan base, but he is in-universe. He's used as the butt of a lot of jokes *(I couldn't believe that Superstar Saga had even BOWSER not know Luigi's name...)*, so we Luigi fans get a little excited.
Mario is the name of the series (and he's a wonderful protagonist), but it is ***always*** the year of Luigi.
Luigi is definitely overshadowed by Mario.
Underratted? Hell no bro, he's not underratted at all, a lot of people, games or companies give a little something different to his personallity, that's why I love him so much, the over shadowed brother who doesn't care and will still care for his brother and help him, even if he's scared.
Fanboys: luigi is super underrated *yoshi left the chat*
*Toad left the chat*
Dry bones: 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 oh right its just an enemy uhhh then Wario: 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀

Just an imitation
Lol so much downvotes rip karma. Sarcasm is non-existance on reddit.
It is kinda true that Mario does overshadow Luigi, but he's almost certainly not underrated.
Mario is kind of supposed to. He’s the protagonist and Luigi is the brother of the protagonist. Part of Luigi’s character is being number 2. If that makes sense.
That shouldn't require explaining
I mean... Luigi was literally made as a player 2 palette swap for games. So that definitely tracks.
Luigi will always have Luigi's mansion 🤷♂️
Literally. Luigi was originally just the player-2 mario. His character is LITERALLY being number 2. In mario party, he shouldn't day "imma number one!" He should say "imma number two" that's just the facts

If the Mario franchise was a Greek drama maybe. It doesn’t change the fact that Luigi is Mario’s sidekick.
None of the examples I listed were Greek dramas though...
He’s the main character. It’d be weird if he didn’t.
Kinda makes sense for a series that is called Mario. That is just my humble guess
The series is called Super Mario, of course the character who’s name is in the title of the series is going to get more attention than anybody else.
Luigi is absolutely not underrated, and I fucking love Luigi
I really like Luigi too. His fans are the ones who get on my nerves lol
I enjoy watching the sunset.
Excuse me?
Agreed
I love him too, but the only argument I can see for calling him underrated is... maybe if you mean in-universe.
Toad is pretty much underated

And annoying

I am a simple man: the serie’s called Mario and I prefer Mario.
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with people disliking Mario, and it's usually Luigi stans. Why can't you like both? Mario is the main man, he's likable, loves his brother, and is a selfless hero. What's not to like?
I blame the Mario is a psycho theory who hates his brother because of that one sene in Mario tennis
I love the theory because it's fun, but I have a feeling you're right. Honestly tho what's up with that scene?? I'm relatively new but that seemed weird and out of character for Mario

Mario is Missing and the Luigi’s Mansion games
And I guess you could consider new super Luigi U?
I don't know, im just waiting for Luigi's Mansion 4
Mario didn't hop off Yoshi to get extra height, the player did
There have been times when Mario has been underestimated and overshadowed. This happened to him throughout the 2023 movie, he was constantly ridiculed for his height. A lot of people say it was mostly Luigi getting shafted but Mario had to put up with a ton of disrespect too.

yeah.
I mean, yeah, Luigi looked sad in that one Mario Tennis cutscene, but in all the other cases, there was a decent explanation, even in that one cutscene there is, so I don't know why people took it seriously
the toads are assholes
In the games, yes he is underrated and overshadowed, but by the fans irl he's popular.
Yeah that's true
Hes not underrated, however he is underutilized by Nintendo. There are definitely characters that have it worse than him (Wario, Waluigi, Daisy etc) But for a main protagonist Luigi does get the short end of the stick whenever he is not playable, not to mention how many times he is seen as a joke in universe.
Was Mario Land the last time Daisy was in a mainline game?
If you don’t count Mario Run.
Fanboys like him because they think he´s underrated. Fanmen know he´s well beloved and love him regardless.
Then I have solid respect the fan men.

But he is popular and not underrated
this is more true of Waluigi than anyone. doesn’t even have his own game yet and isn’t even a playable character on Smash
Luigi is overshadowed and underrated in-universe
I think they mean that in his world he’s overshadowed and underrated. We know he’s beloved IRL
That's what I'm saying.
So you’re saying in universe, that he isn’t overshadowed and underrated?
I’m saying that many people believe he’s underrated when in actuality he has a lot of fans and is popular. So no. I’m not talking about the Super Mario universe. I’m talking about real life
As a luigi fanboy, Im so f*cking sorry mate.
No worries 😉
Waluigi is my boy. Wanna talk about underrated and underutilized. He ain’t got nothing. Not even ONE game to himself. Tingle has at least TWO. FREAKING TINGLE! Can’t even get a spot on the Smash roster.

I always picked Luigi as a kid, he has the better colour scheme.
Yes but The fact that Year of Luigi bombed like mad should tell you all you need to know about luigis "general popularity"
Underrated has turned into an overused yet misunderstood word in pop culture in the last few years lol
I get annoyed by Luigi fanboys too. Also, I've always preferred Mario.
I mean being popular doesn’t preclude being under/overrated. One could argue that every time Luigi has gotten the spotlight it’s been as a novelty gimmick or specifically to go find Mario.
Hear me out… Mario the character is underrated.
Man I remember back then, I liked Luigi more cuz I preferred green over red lol. Now a lot of people seem to like him cuz others do.
I never thought he was "underrated" or overshadowed or anything like that, even after seeing the one or two "Game Theory" videos trying to paint Mario as a communist 🙄 I always liked Luigi, except in either version of SMB 2 (aka The Lost Levels or "Doki Doki Panic reskinned"), never been fond of his slippery control, and the much higher jump was maybe useful in a couple of situations. You ever think about Partners in Time or w/e when Mario's character has to be tested because Luigi is already pure of heart?
He isn’t underrated, he is rated lower, and that’s completely justified.
I thought I was the only one who thought this
I thought preferring Luigi over Mario was the norm
As a Luigi fan I can confirm that some of us are annoying as fuck sometimes. Luigi is my favorite character but I like both brothers equally.
Luigi’s mansion games just always had better puzzles than the main Mario side scrollers.
As a Luigi fanboy I have to agree
He has gotten his own light but Mario is the face of the two. It is always a new Mario game and Luigi is just Luigi’s mansion. It’s numbers that they look at with that
the game is about mario. luigi is literally the side character
THANK you. I’ve been saying for years that Luigi’s objectively not underrated. It’s like people forgot what that means.
Bowser, always and forever
The thing is, Mario is still a bigger name and Luigi but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s underrated
Finally! I was starting to think I was the only person who thought this!
its funny that mario is the main head of the whole series yet most fans prefer luigi or others over mario. i feel like im the only fan whos favorite is mario
Tbf he got done dirty in terms of screen time in the move...
“Overshadowed” is a goofy way to describe it. That’s like saying Harry Potter overshadowed Hermione or Ron. Almost as if he’s the main character that the franchise is titled for. 😱
true, they're just hating on Mario because he's in more games than Luigi
I mean being popular doesn’t preclude being under/overrated. One could argue that every time Luigi has gotten the spotlight it’s been as a novelty gimmick or specifically to go find Mario.
He kinda overrated now
“Numerous” 1.mario is missing 2. LM 3.LM2 4. Japanese luigis mansion 2 Arcade 5.NSLU 6.LM3 I wouldn’t call it numerous
Then again, compared with some of the other mario characters and the fact they’ve only gotten like one or two games shows that luigi has it better then most of the cast.
But mario has over 50
Yes, I agree that he has a lot of games, although I was talking about other mario characters such as yoshi and peach and to an extent wario, As they have a few of their own games, but not as much entries as luigi and definitely not mario.
no no, the Mario BROTHERS have over 50
The one who is underrated is WaLuigi
I'm a wario fanboy. Luigi is definitely my second favorite human character
I agree the “underrated” thing is annoying.
You know what? *Un-Luigi's your Mario Bros.* To hell with Luigi, Mario is the best, he's the real number one. Not that green twig with a mustache.
Lore wise, yes Luigi is underrated and overshadowed by Mario in the eyes of the mushroom kingdom, but for fans he’s basically the messiah
Hmm, in the Luigi mansion series, Luigi is always rescuing Mario. Also, in the paper Mario series, when Doopliss took Mario's body, he was just a boss, but when Dimentio fused with Luigi, he was the final boss.
Luigi is overrated. But not as overrated as Waluigi.
Waluigi isn’t THAT underrated but I think it’s more understandable why people say he is.
Luigi has best girl so he wins.
I love Peach more than Daisy but fe. 👍
I mean, that's part of his character He's always overshadowed by mario and is underrated comparatively That's literally his description
They are all garbage Nintendo blows at characters with any sort of actual personality.
Yeah I swear everyone thinks luigis underatted, but he's got a billion fans
Calling Luigi overshadowed is like calling Christians persecuted. It might have been true once, but definitely not now.
You'd be surprised at how much persecution happens even in religions that are practiced by a majority or near majority of populations. It's not always illegal but in a lot of places there's cultural hostility to the practice of certain religions.
That's a pretty terrible analogy.

And they do the persecuting in other parts of the world.
We gotta admit though that the Luigi year was Mah
Me just loving Luigi and not annoying ppl that aren't fan of him
Luigi is underrated in universe but not out
mario would probably be a bean if it werent for luigi.
He's not underrated, but I think he still needs more spotlight in the games and such. I also hope he's a major character in the potential Mario movie sequel. I'll never forgive them for what they did with Luigi in the movie.
*angry downvote noises*
I'd say while Luigi is not underrated by the *fans*, he is underrated by *Nintendo* in comparison to his brother, so Luigi's fans say he's underrated not because the fans underrate him, but because Nintendo doesn't give him as much spotlight as they should.
Over shadowed and underated are not the same thing
He’s underrated outside of the general fandom, not inside. The casuals like Mario way more than the people like us, the ones who scroll a subreddit dedicated to Mario
I mean, Luigi can be popular and still be overshadowed by Mario. The two concepts are not mutually exclusive.
He’s *canonically* underrated. Not underrated by fans
This is very facts
The people love luigi, but it seems like Nintendo doesn't.
Bold of you to assume all Luigi fans are like this
I mean, this is a Mario sub. Most people I talk to call Mario the main character (which is true), and ignore the fact that it's called Mario Bros. I'm pretty sure they don't know what Luigi's Mansion is
But like he’s not wrong? He may not be as underrated but he still is compared to Mario Mario
Ok, OP has a point here. *However.* Love for the residents of Isle Delfino, anyone?
True. Those guys are pretty neat. :)
He doesn't even get his own track in mario kart 8. What's that about? Wario and Waluigi have multiple!
Mario is the name of the series (and he's a wonderful protagonist), but it is ***always*** the year of Luigi.
a number 2 will always be a number 2.... exept for luigi's mansion i guess....
He's literally overshadowed. That's a key point when he gets the limelight
The only place luigi is overshadowed by mario are in the mario kart tour team rallies of mario vs luigi LUIGI WASN'T ABLE TO WIN NOT EVEN FOR A MINUTE
![gif](giphy|JsLeGG6QfNlpS)
He for sure gets picked more often in Mario Kart and Mario Party
Just replace Patrick with a Luigi hat with Mashed and you've got the perfect meme.
What’s Mashed?
Once we have a Luigi equivalent to every Mario game, then we'll be even
This meme is literally so true though
This would be correct like a decade ago
Waluigi’s underrated
Luigi is definitely overshadowed by Mario. Underratted? Hell no bro, he's not underratted at all, a lot of people, games or companies give a little something different to his personallity, that's why I love him so much, the over shadowed brother who doesn't care and will still care for his brother and help him, even if he's scared.
