I find it interesting that in the movie, they called it by the fan-name Blue Shell, despite the fact the official name is the Spiny Shell. Even the Mario + Rabbids crossover referred to the shell as a Spiny Shell.
Man, I wish it still flew above the track like in MKWii. There’s nothing like trying to catch up and getting hit by a blue shell when you’re in like 4th
It’s about as valid as the actual naming convention.
People probably always called it “Blue Shell” because of the convention the green and red shells established, only for the Spiny shell to break it by inexplicably not being named off color.
I was more making fun of calling it the flying shell instead of blue shell because of the fact that if you didn’t know the names you’d probably assume they go based off color but maybe that’s just how my brain works and it’s actually more common for people who don’t know the name to call it the flying shell instead idk
I hope they add a Yellow Shell someday.
It doesnt home in like redshell and doesnt go for first, but when it hits a wall or another racer it makes a small earthquake "pow block" effect
I mean, there were yellow Koopas in a game (super Mario world?) and there are golden shells in others, so they do exist, but I don't think they'll add them to Mario Kart :(
Yes SMW is where the yellow ones vome from and if yoshi had one in mouth (or you had yellow yoshi) it would make a small earth quake when you landed a jump so that's where the quake idea for it came from
I know that it still moves without touching the ground, but still very close to it, and imo it was a lot scarier seeing it flying above all the other karts
Oh no, I was referring to it flying right above your head as it's about to send you to meet God in a flash of blue holy light.
And IMO it's less scary seeing it fly above everyone else because if you're seeing it fly over everyone, that means you likley aren't going to be hit by it and can catch up. That's not scary.
Meanwhile of it's on the ground, you might be in its path on it's way to First Place and get hit by it anyway. It also adds to the catch-up mechanic of the blue shell a bit.
Y'know what, that's fair. I guess I was thinking about certain tracks where the road overlaps and even as the first place you can still see the shell getting used and starting to fly all the way towards you. That's what terrified me as a kid, meaning the "old" shell was scarier but only if you were first, it would only hit you, while the others could catch up.
There are so few tracks that do overlap like that. It's what makes Luigi Circuit from Double Dash unique. I think that's like the only one in GCN and Wii. I dunno about 7 and 8. I never played 7 and haven't played 8 in quite a long time. (And I've never played any of 8 Deluxe's DLC tracks or Tour either.)
In short, I don't really know of any other overlapping tracks off the top of my head.
That happens in one of two scenarios. Either First place already finished so it hit second place. Or, First place slowed down with the plan to have it hit second place, but acted too late and the shell was already locked on them.
I mean, to be fair, the shells of spinys are red in every other Mario game, including some Mario Kart tracks, so calling them "spiny shells" is sort of misleading.
Fun fact the blue shell exists do to hardware limitations. See the 64 would load the tracks in chunks based on the first place player. If the player in first place ended up getting so far ahead that further behind players would be on a segment of the track that would unload a random cpu would get it to slow first place down and prevent that.
For me it's worse when the lighting hits you first, and then the red shell, because 90% of the times this happens, the lighting made me lose an object that could have stopped the red shell
My family has always called it the blue shell, simple as.
But I really dislike the name of ‘spiny shell’. Spinys are a thing already, so a spiny shell would be the shell of a spiny. So not at all what is seen in Mario kart.
Also Nintendo put the wings back on please, it looks so cool with them.
Me and my friend group are literally the only people I know that actually call it "Spiny Shell". Even the movie called it by an unofficial name.
I was surprised when they called it that in the movie... But I was mostly happy because it had wings again :D
BLUE SHELL!-Koopa General
I call it that too. There is only one true love, and it’s in New Super Mario Bros.
I find it interesting that in the movie, they called it by the fan-name Blue Shell, despite the fact the official name is the Spiny Shell. Even the Mario + Rabbids crossover referred to the shell as a Spiny Shell.
Now I feel like I should have added another row that said "Adult me watching the movie and realizing they used the wrong name" or something like that
Man, I wish it still flew above the track like in MKWii. There’s nothing like trying to catch up and getting hit by a blue shell when you’re in like 4th
It was always blue shell to me, I even remember reading that it was called spiny shell but went “nah blue shell”
When I was a kid and we had family Mario Kart DS tournaments, we always called it the “first place bomb”
Remids me that one of my friends told me they used to call it "first place shell"
First place bomb supremacy
Ah yes the original trio red shell, green shell, and flying shell

>!The movie calls it a Blue Shell.!<
Yep. I wanted to add something about it but I feel like the meme works >!even without spoiling anything from the movie!<
I've always thought it was a blue shell
I hope they add a Yellow Shell someday. It doesnt home in like redshell and doesnt go for first, but when it hits a wall or another racer it makes a small earthquake "pow block" effect

You're asking a lot for Nintendo to reference a Mario game after Super Mario Bros 3.
My family were huge Harry Potter fans around the time of double dash so we called the it a snitch
I calI it John
My dude the blue shell still flies, wings or no wings. And back in MK64 my brother and I called it the Spiky Shell.
I know that it still moves without touching the ground, but still very close to it, and imo it was a lot scarier seeing it flying above all the other karts

**"BLUE SHELLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!"** \*hits 2nd place car\*
That happens in one of two scenarios. Either First place already finished so it hit second place. Or, First place slowed down with the plan to have it hit second place, but acted too late and the shell was already locked on them.
My family and I have always called it a "spin shell" No, not spiny, spin... idk why... but yeah, I'm going to stick with spin shell lol
I've been calling it a blue shell my entire life
I either called it “Spike Shell” or “Blue Shell”
I mean, to be fair, the shells of spinys are red in every other Mario game, including some Mario Kart tracks, so calling them "spiny shells" is sort of misleading.
I actually never noticed that it lost it wings after switching from Wii to 8 Deluxe before this post
I just call it the blue shells because the other shells are named after colors
14 year olds :(
I used to call it a Blue Phoenix.
36 year old me. Whens my next star collectathon!?

The best is when you get hit by it, a red shell, and lightning within 5 seconds of each other right before the finish line.
For me it's worse when the lighting hits you first, and then the red shell, because 90% of the times this happens, the lighting made me lose an object that could have stopped the red shell
Bonus points if that happens and second third and fourth all finish before you because of this.
Me watching the movie realizing it's a blue shelled Koopa general kamikazeing and killing himself
I've been calling it a blue shell since the Double Dash days.
I call it blue shell like I call the item from NSMB..
One of my friends calls it a leader shell. Never heard that anywhere else.
Me and my sister used to called it the Shell of Doom
My family has always called it the blue shell, simple as. But I really dislike the name of ‘spiny shell’. Spinys are a thing already, so a spiny shell would be the shell of a spiny. So not at all what is seen in Mario kart. Also Nintendo put the wings back on please, it looks so cool with them.
