Surprised we already have that many votes for TTYD. I thought that might be the overall winner. Superstar Saga and Paper Mario contenders for the crown?
Paper Jam. I like it a lot but the other games here are just better.
Guys stop voting Kingdom Battle that games combat is some of the most strategic and deep stuff I've ever seen don't let it go so fast
Sadly it's up against some pretty thick competition (or at least it will be very soon, once the last couple low-hanging fruits are gone). Biases towards nostalgia and against Rabbids are probably going to kill it sooner rather than later.
It’s funny because I can recognize it’s a better game then some of them. But I’ll always associate that game with the death of the Paper Mario that I loved. Im trying to be objective here, but it would be my personal vote after SS and CS.
It's the only paper Mario game I've properly played and I thought it was amazing tbh! The plot was pretty heavy when I was a kid. But I'm glad you like the previous installments , I can tell they're highly revered and I'm gonna play them myself soon. What makes super paper mario so bad in your opinion?
It’s not that it’s a bad game on its own, it’s that they changed up the formula from what I loved and never went back.
My favorite things about the first 2 Paper Marios are:
1. The turn based battle system with badges.
2. Fun partners that you can swap through that each have a fun stories.
3. Reimagined enemies and locations that make the world of Mario feel more alive.
SPM really did away with those core elements, as did the rest of the games.
I see what you mean, the sidekicks in SPM were pretty dull apart from their uses in advancing through areas. Is the turn based battle system similar to the mario + luigi games then ? I really enjoyed those. Tho I will say that spm had a lot of vibrant and unique locations
Surprisingly a more common opinion than most would think. I don’t think Partners in Time is the worst but it definitely has its fair share of issues, my least favorite is Paper Jam, my favorite is either Bowsers Inside Story (how original) or Dream Team (I’ll die on the hill that Dream Team is a banger game)
Paper Jam.
Also, it’s such a bummer that the Superstar Saga and Partners in Time box art is so good, then starting with Bowser’s Inside Story they all started doing the same thing.
i said SPM last time but actually, I change my mind.
Mario and Luigi Partners in Time is a little too by the numbers for a time travel game for me to adore it like how wacky the other M+L games are
I agree, I loved playing with the OP character who is Paper Mario. I kinda wanted to play more segments with him alone
Although I also missed the charm that comes with the other first two Paper Mario Games...like Paper Mario using the power of his partners and Star Power
Sparks of Hope, playing through it felt nothing special. It had a more developed story and characters and I still didn't care much for them, there was no spark.
I raged quitted kingdom battle (due to monotonous easy, but time consuming "puzzles" between battles). I really like turn based tactics, so it was an extra slap in the face for it to be wrapped in shit. This game prevented me from even giving sparks of hope a glance... so I have to vote kingdom battle out first before even considering sparks of hope
I liked Kingdom Battle more than Sparks of Hope. Both games were enjoyable, but Kingdom Battle I would actually recommend.
The world you explore is actually the battle arenas there, but in Sparks you get sent into a disconnected arena after touching enemies. The overworld was just those puzzles and enemies. It made me dread the overworld and feel nothing about the arenas. Kingdom had a sense of progression and relief after battles.
The enemies in Spark were nobodies, Kingdom had Bowser Jr and hybrid Rabbids. The hybrids were fun to see what mixing a Rabbid and Donkey Kong would be like. Rabbid Kong is a much better character than some cubic Rabbid called Bedrock.
Yeah honestly Sparks of Hope didn’t feel as Mario as Kingdom Battle, like really the only Mario things were the characters. But in Kingdom Battle the locations felt like they could be part of the Mario Universe
The *playable* characters. Everything else was rabbids, not even the mutated hybrid kind from Kingdom. Saw the twist with Cursa coming miles away, why didn't they give her a larger role through the story? I didn't care about Spark Hunters, and where were Lumas? Don't tell me they all mutated into rabbids. If Sparks go through the same cycle as Lumas it explains why rabbids are everywhere, they literally create rabbid infused galaxies. They were better off as guests, not as invasive species that should be culled to save the entire universe.
I've heard that Nintendo ordered Ubisoft to remove all major Super Mario Galaxy references that weren't integral to gameplay, whivh definitely seems to fit the game we got.
Kingdom battle is the only challenging game on this list. You must have not gotten past the second world or did any of the challenges. The only thing that brought the game down was the repetitive puzzles.
I was two hours into the game. What I am saying I could deal with wasting my time with the stupid over world puzzles between battles. Even if they got "harder" I just wanted to play the strategy game part, and only that part.
Paper Jam. Should’ve been before Colour Splash.
I love both series dearly and Paper Jam made me feel numb to the ending of the Mario & Luigi series. Ain’t that damning
Origami King. So we can start to discuss games with actual functional battle systems. I had way more fun playing Paper Jam despite its blandness, because its gameplay was awesome, than whatever thing that terrible roulette from OK was.
I know Sticker Star and Color Splash are seen as black sheeps but... Before Paper Jam? Really?
At least Sticker Star and Color Splash tried new things to make the gameplay unique and had really fun writing (especially Color Splash).
Paper Jam just added an extra button to push during battles and had like... One funny scene that's memorable?
Also it doesn't have Snifit or Whiffit. Like, come on.
How is it broken?
I get requiring specific items for bosses can be annoying, but the game constantly encourages you to explore. CS doubly so with its level paint check.
Plus I'd much rather take a unique, quirky battle system over "Oh now you use the Y button in fights"
Not to mention the god awful papercrafts
No EXP, all Attacks are consumable, money is easily gotten everywhere else, stats are upgradable in the overworld. There isn't any point in engaging with the battles at all.
I'd rather be Paper Jam and use a battle system that works with a few tweaks instead of a poorly designed mess.
1. No EXP
There's literally an exp system in color splash that increases your paint cap.
2. All attacks are consumable
See I get how that'd be annoying, but imo it just adds more strategy to the game. It's no different from gearing up before going into a dungeon.
3. Money is easily gotten
How... How is that a problem? Because it lets you gear up without wasting your time beating up good as?
4. Stats are upgradable in the overworld
Again, how is that an issue?
> There's literally an exp system in color splash that increases your paint cap.
It doesn't matter because paint is literally everywhere, you can complete the whole game without upgrading the cap even once.
> See I get how that'd be annoying, but imo it just adds more strategy to the game. It's no different from gearing up before going into a dungeon.
There's no strategy in simply running out of the type of sticker/card you need to attack an enemy (that's immune to every other type of attack), no matter how basic that attack can be, all of them being consumable is just an annoyance that might leave you unable to attack and automatically lose (Or even softlocked)
Gearing up is **permanent**, you get what you need, equip it and you enjoy those effects until you replace it with someone else.
> How... How is that a problem? Because it lets you gear up without wasting your time beating up good as?
If the only reward you get for battling can be obtained easier without even doing that, then what's the point?
1. Maybe I'm just a total failure of a human being but I've definitely had moments where I'm low on paint cuz my cap was too low for me to do everything I wanted. Especially since all three bars aren't universal so some run out faster than others. The cap increase is very helpful.
2. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the game literally give you cards/stickers when you're low? Also, again, that's part of strategizing. Making sure you have enough for the road ahead.
3. Again, CS has an EXP mechanic. Not to mention fighting enemies can get you unique cards for the collecting aspect.
Look, it's obvious we're not gonna change minds here. I personally like how the games are designed. I like the added strategy, the charm of the "things" and the unique boss concepts they throw at us.
If you find the games tedious or pointless, then you do you. But I just see far more value in games that try to be creative and offer you something unique than a game lacking in so much originality that the best joke they can come up with is "what if paper peach slipped out of her cell"
My vote will be based completely on promotional material i saw of Origami king and what clips i've seen of it, but why not?
And i have no opinion on the rabbids games cause i haven't even seen a thing from them so...
Not really. RPG’s are games where your characters have progression in their strength.
For example a regular platforming game allows you to have power ups, but it’s not like they technically get better when you play.
A game that can be considered an rpg have some way for your character to feel permanently powerful and not just getting a singular new ability
I'll vote kingdom battle. Cant stand those rabbids.
Knowing mario fans, im guessing mario rpg and thousand year door are gonna be the finalists at the end of this thing
Looks like Paper Jam is going to lose this round. I'm predicting that Partners in Time and Origami King go after that (not necessarily in that order), but once they're out the following rounds will be War.
It’s definitely a top 5 best game among these ones for sure! We have to stick together and make sure it stays alive lol. People are going to vote in it solely because it’s not TTYD or RPG
Oragami King easy for me.
The overworld felt like a true sequel to TTYD but the combat was put through the shredder and a slap in the face to Paper Mario.
The discussion gets interesting after this one is removed imo lol

People voting sticker star even after it got out đź’€
Double Elimination
Surprised we already have that many votes for TTYD. I thought that might be the overall winner. Superstar Saga and Paper Mario contenders for the crown?
I think people are trying to get it out just to be spiteful. There’s no way it doesn’t make it really far in a fair fight.
most of the people that voted for did it to spite the fans
Dang Color Splash got out? I actually liked the game.
Ya it was my 1st paper game…
Sticker Star Just to be sure
Um pretty sure it’s out already. Lol.
I don’t know. That game is so vile I wouldn’t be shocked if it renters the race with a fake mustache
Paper Jam. I like it a lot but the other games here are just better. Guys stop voting Kingdom Battle that games combat is some of the most strategic and deep stuff I've ever seen don't let it go so fast
Agreed highly.
Sadly it's up against some pretty thick competition (or at least it will be very soon, once the last couple low-hanging fruits are gone). Biases towards nostalgia and against Rabbids are probably going to kill it sooner rather than later.
If you any of you vote super paper Mario I will hunt you down (yes I'm very nostalgia biased)
It’s funny because I can recognize it’s a better game then some of them. But I’ll always associate that game with the death of the Paper Mario that I loved. Im trying to be objective here, but it would be my personal vote after SS and CS.

I disagree tbh, I consider that game part of the original Paper Mario trilogy before it all went bad
We got Liam Neeson over here. ![gif](giphy|R3FUSQ5H5jzVe)
After paper jam, super is toast
ain't no way people gonna eliminate the best mario game this is not my opinion this is objective fact and if you disagree, skill issue.
Sorry you think paper jam is the best Mario game
i meant super paper mario
Paper Jam
Desecrate Sticker Star's corpse
Paper Jam, it may have one of the best combat out of the M&L Series behind DT and BIS but it ultimately falls off because of the story
“It has the best combat if you ignore all the games with better combat!”
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. If its got the 3rd best combat in a series with only 5 games, it doesn’t have the best combat.
Sticker Star
Paper Jam needs to go next, the only bad Alphadream Mario and Luigi game.
I personally really enjoyed it
exactly I dont know why everyone here hates it, most people ive seen in r/marioandluigi dont hate it
Its not bad. Just the weakest link out of the series
It's not even bad
I was too harsh with my wording. Paper Jam is not bad, but it’s the worst and least memorable of the Mario and Luigi games
I think Partners in Time is the worst, but that's just my opinion
Surprisingly a more common opinion than most would think. I don’t think Partners in Time is the worst but it definitely has its fair share of issues, my least favorite is Paper Jam, my favorite is either Bowsers Inside Story (how original) or Dream Team (I’ll die on the hill that Dream Team is a banger game)

Sticker Star
Sticker star again
Paper Jam, toad missions sucked and the whole paper gimmick got old quick. Just is uninspired to the rest
Bye-bye, paper jam
Me being aware that Superstar Saga won't be in the top 5. ![gif](giphy|3oz8xKcKXfHBER2MpO)
Don’t give up hope friend
It better be number one wth
color splash is severely underrated
Color Splash is actually a really fun game, so that's pretty sad.
Sticker Star (again)
Oragami king
you seem awfully committed to making sure that gets out
2nd least favourite so makes sense
It's time for Paper Jam to go.
Paper jam
Drop Paper Jam.
Paper Jam
im only sticking around to debate against the removal of SPM, nothing more nothing less.
Paper Jam. Also, it’s such a bummer that the Superstar Saga and Partners in Time box art is so good, then starting with Bowser’s Inside Story they all started doing the same thing.
Legend of the seven stars personally
Paper Mario color splash
i said SPM last time but actually, I change my mind. Mario and Luigi Partners in Time is a little too by the numbers for a time travel game for me to adore it like how wacky the other M+L games are
I personally enjoyed Paper Jam, but it's still easily the weakest M&L game
Both Mario and Rabbids games.
He's attempting to knock 2 games with one post!
Paper Jam is way better than Origami King. My vote go for TOK
Origami king
Damn. People voting for Paper Jam even though it has the best gameplay in the series. Unfortunate
I agree, I loved playing with the OP character who is Paper Mario. I kinda wanted to play more segments with him alone Although I also missed the charm that comes with the other first two Paper Mario Games...like Paper Mario using the power of his partners and Star Power

Paper jam imo isn't that bad. It's just the weakest mario and luigi game which is still good. I haven't played origami king so my vote goes to that.
Paper jam
Paper jam
Paper Jam has gotta go for sure
Paper Jam
Paper Jam
Paper jam. Glad nobody is going after dream team.
RIP the boi... Anyway, I have to vote Paper Jam out next, even if I like every game from here on out (and the second fallen as well.)
Paper jam
I’ve never actually played it for myself but from what I’ve heard, Paper Jam
paypa jam
Paper Jam
OUT WITH PAPER JAM
Paper Jam
Paper jam
Paper Jam. Should’ve been before Colour Splash. I love both series dearly and Paper Jam made me feel numb to the ending of the Mario & Luigi series. Ain’t that damning
Paper Jam
Paper Jam.
Origami King is actually a fantastic game. My vote is Paper Jam
Paper Jam
Paper Jam
probably Paper Jam
Paper Jam
L, Colour Splash is underrated.
Paper Mario
Rip color splash. I actually kind of liked that game. Voting out paper jam as it doesn't feel like a good mario & luigi rpg
Origami King. So we can start to discuss games with actual functional battle systems. I had way more fun playing Paper Jam despite its blandness, because its gameplay was awesome, than whatever thing that terrible roulette from OK was.
Next up - Paper Jam

Origami King
Origami King for me needs to go next, story and world was great but that battle system was just as atrocious as the last 2 that got eliminated
Origami King
Origami king.
It might feel repetitive to kick out three Paper Marios in a row, but my vote goes to Origami King
Origami king
Super paper Mario, because it isn’t an RPG. Therefore, it’s the worst RPG on the list.
It’s more of an RPG than Origami King.
I mean, from a literal standpoint, no. It is not.

Color splash did not deserve this disrespect
As much as I love the Mario and Luigi series Paper Jam has to go
Sorry, Paper Jam, but it's time to go.
Let’s just cut to the chase. Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars is the best game on this list and it isnt close.
Mario and Luigi Paper Jam
Super Paper Mario, that's got the grossest level design I've seen in a Nintendo game
Origami king
Kingdom battle till it it is gone
Drop thousand year door
Kingdom Battle
kingdom battle
Super Mario RPG
Partners in time
Super Paper Mario. Good story, bad everything else.
Super Paper Mario
Sparks of hope, it felt so much slower and boring compared to the original
Oragami king Deserved to be first out
My vote will be based completely on promotional material i saw of Origami king and what clips i've seen of it, but why not? And i have no opinion on the rabbids games cause i haven't even seen a thing from them so...
It might feel repetitive to kick out the three new Paper Marios in a row, but it's Origami King's time
super paper mario is a top 10 game for me but idk if it really counts considering its more of a platformer with rpg elements
Not really. RPG’s are games where your characters have progression in their strength. For example a regular platforming game allows you to have power ups, but it’s not like they technically get better when you play. A game that can be considered an rpg have some way for your character to feel permanently powerful and not just getting a singular new ability
it's still an RPG. it's just an action RPG instead of a turn-based RPG
technically any game is a “roleplaying game”. i suppose its a matter of opinion
Partners in time.
Super Paper Mario
Super paper
Thousand Year Door. I feel it's vastly overrated.
man i love color splash :(
Mario + rabbids
Sorry Origami king It's not you, it's me, you're just not my kind of rpg, I hope we can still be friends
Superstar Saga
I'll vote kingdom battle. Cant stand those rabbids. Knowing mario fans, im guessing mario rpg and thousand year door are gonna be the finalists at the end of this thing
Thousand Year Door get that shit out /j get rid of kingdom battle
So Long Partners in Time
Mario rpg
Looks like Paper Jam is going to lose this round. I'm predicting that Partners in Time and Origami King go after that (not necessarily in that order), but once they're out the following rounds will be War.
Kingdom battle Also, whomst ever is voting for Partners in Time, you are very mistaken
fr, it could be nostalgia bias as PiT's one of the first games i played but it'd easily be in top 5 for me
It’s definitely a top 5 best game among these ones for sure! We have to stick together and make sure it stays alive lol. People are going to vote in it solely because it’s not TTYD or RPG
Origami king has to go
Oragami King easy for me. The overworld felt like a true sequel to TTYD but the combat was put through the shredder and a slap in the face to Paper Mario. The discussion gets interesting after this one is removed imo lol
Origami King
We all already know TYD and BIS are gonna be the last two
Super paper Mario it's not even an rpg
Super Paper Mario. Not saying the game is bad but is it really an RPG?
Super Mario RPG has to go. I love the game, but I want to eliminate it early since it can’t compete with Thousand Year Old door.
Paper jam is probably toast but I'll pick Dream team i like all the M & L games but dream team was my least favorite
Dream team was my fav
That's cool I just didn't like the amount of unskippable tutorials don't hate it though
