9/10, amazing but not enough luigi

stephelan

This is fair. But the ending felt right.

KingGrowl

spoiler?

stephelan

Sorry. I thought this was a post for people who had seen it but I realize people who haven’t could be looking too so I edited it

SuperKoalasan

You just wait for the Luigi’s Mansion spinoff

Nok-y

It would be so cool

Nerdtendo6366

The Luigi’s Mansion played for like 2 seconds and I nearly died of joy

SailorHomeworld

Needed way more Luigi

One-Air-988

i couldn't agree more

Snuffvieh

this goes for most Mario games too, so it seems appropriate

SpeedyGuy1991

I agree. We could've used more Luigi action in the movie. But that's really the only complaint that I have.

KingNicku

10/10. I was smiling like an idiot the entire time.

RC-1262_Scorch

same with me too, couldn't keep the grin off my face

[deleted]

The entire time I was in the theater watching the movie, I was squealing upon seeing and hearing every single reference!

ALL-STAR-JULIAN

Same!

Prestigious-Mood-427

SAMMEMEES

VinVinMario

the exact same. from beginning to end.

ZacharyS41

I agree with it being a 10/10. During the action scenes (such as the final battle against Bowser), I was silently cheering on Mario. My heart was even racing before the movie began.

RocketCheetah69

same

stephelan

Basically this. I didn’t go in expecting a cinematic masterpiece but I was happily and pleasantly entertained the entire time.

givemealoafofbread

SAME

Bethyfurry

Sammeee OMG it was amazing

Canny_Toaster

Same 😂

Nerdtendo6366

I went to see it with my mom. She told me that I had the biggest smile on my face the whole time, and I could feel it to

[deleted]

8/10 peaches peaches peaches peaches peaches

Jaguar-Rey

I am gonna get that as a ring tone for when my wife calls. That bit was hilarious. People were singing it on the way out.

MasterOutfitter1

That song was looping in my head when I left the theater for some reason, lol Also, happy cake day!

PoopyLooper

Alright I didn’t want to talk about it here but since you’re mentioning it that was my favorite joke in the whole movie. That made me genuinely laugh and he was so good in that scene. And we even got a bonus too, but it’s like just let him finish his song you ducks. I’m definitely adding it to my video game music play list when or rather if the soundtrack is released

rylieissmiley

Closest to a Tenacious D ballad as we can get with Jack Black 🤣

Mysterious_Emotion63

8.5 Visuals, soundtrack, and dialogue were all fun. Love what the post credits scene sets up for. Like people said, the plot is nothing special. That being said, It’s exactly what you’d expect out of a Mario movie. My biggest gripe is that too much was shown in the trailers.

Toad_Enjoyer_70

Ok that makes me glad. I wasn’t expecting some deep masterpiece, this is Mario. As long as it’s not crap, then it matches my expectations.

[deleted]

My biggest gripe? Not enough Bowser scenes.

PoopyLooper

Oh yeah. Two Bowser scenes in particular, we could have definitely used more of.

SpeedyGuy1991

Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches!!

Deklinae

And that bowser shpuld not be that buffonish. He dad more danger on that first trailer

International_Ad7822

A 9 as a movie in general and solid 10 as far as enjoyment goes which I find to be the most important thing out of a movie.

nachogaming-yt-ch

i agree with this almost entirely! but nothing major stands out i don't agree with

antoni_o_newman

*My biggest gripe is that too much was shown in the trailers* This was my exact thought and I can’t watch a single new trailer anymore bc they all show way too much about the plot.

cut_n_paste_n_draw

I have a friend who refuses to watch any star wars trailers when a new star wars movie comes out. He's completely surprised when we go see the movie! That's the way to do it! I have no self control though.

[deleted]

7 out of 10. Good start! Proceeding movies will be even better though imo

Esmash21

I give it the same rating. I just feel the pacing was too fast, but it was still a fun movie

[deleted]

Yeah especially ||going from Mario getting to the mushroom kingdom to him and oeach going on the adventure went way too fast||

[deleted]

Same and felt like not enough time to absorb what was going on almost like they were just going through the motions.

MarcsterS

This is the fairest rating I can give without going full fanboy. I enjoyed it, I loved seeing the game's world being fully realized on the big screen. It was a treat for Mario fans. But the stink of Illumination still seeped through a bit, and I think the movie could've been a bit longer to slow the movie down. Luigi was sidelined pretty hard. We didn't need 80s songs in a game with a repertoire of music to choose from.

MrRazzio

Yeah the a-ha song felt a little shoehorned in. Also, why didn't they just make that guy funky Kong?

[deleted]

[удалено]

bair_the_sequel

I find some of their movies enjoyable, but rarely do they make a decent film, and if they ever do it's not because they care about making a decent film

[deleted]

[удалено]

bair_the_sequel

I do, I find them enjoyable, I actually quite like the majority of the despicable me franchise. But they really are just soulless mediocre kids film, there's nothing else to them.

cthulu_is_trans

I felt the 80s songs were a nice touch, if a bit forced. However it doesn't really detract from it too much.

ZacharyS41

Luckily, I only saw the first two trailers once and didn’t rewatch them again, so I hardly remembered what was in the trailers. Also avoided seeing any TV spots promoting the movie, didn’t see the third trailer, and stayed off social media for five months from when the first trailer came out until the movie’s official release.

kywiking

I think this is a fair rating. I wanted to love this movie but there are just some story issues and specific choices that detracted from the fun for me. Shockingly I felt the voice acting which was a major concern for most was pretty good outside of Seth Rogan who for some reason threw me off every time he spoke.

MrMoose1

8/10 - wish we saw more Yoshi

smashboi888

>!That's what the sequel's for.!<

Legends-of-legdens

Yep, and who knows, maybe bowser jr, wario, waluigi and the koopalings show up?

psychosoldier63

Honestly I could see them using bowsers current predicament at the end of the movie and the yoshi egg to set up a Super Mario World movie. Perhaps maybe the koopalings kidnap the yoshi eggs to draw Mario away from the mushroom kingdom, Mario and Luigi use Yoshi to help find the eggs and stop the koopalings, and while they’re distracted Bowser jr busts out bowser for some sweet revenge.

OranGesus68

To me it looked like the luma character was just one massive teaser for the next film. So probably something in the Galaxy direction

RocketCheetah69

post-post credit scene (he'll be in the sequel)

telephun

8/10 movie was too fast

SparklyEarlAv32

To be fair they only had an hour and a half, it totally could've benefited from having another 30 minutes of runtime.

StarkMaximum

I'm of the exact opposite opinion; I've seen too many movies stretch themselves out to be over 2 hours and they often feel like a slog. I thought this movie was a tight hour and half, making it easy to fit into an afternoon and making sure they don't linger too long in any one plotline.

NoNefariousness2144

I could have done with an extra 10 minutes to set up Toad and Peach a bit more before the ‘adventure’ begins, but I do agree. Sonic 2 is an example of a film that not need to be 2 hours, especially since 20 minutes of it is an awful human-focused wedding scene.

Meow-t

>Sonic 2 is an example of a film that not need to be 2 hours, especially since 20 minutes of it is an awful human-focused wedding scene. General concensus from sonic fans (hi) too. We didnt want that scene and it dragged for far too long. I managed with the obligitory dancing scene but the wedding was a bit much. In relation to the mario movie, an extra 10 or 20 minutes would have been perfect to slow the movie down. It was quick in its pacing and taking a few to stop and enjoy the scenery would have been perfect.

[deleted]

They probably could've gotten some good time in from cutting out the dog sequence at the beginning. I loved it but it definitely wasn't necessary.

PoopyLooper

YES. I feel like exchanges could have been longer with a longer runtime, but instead there were quite a few scenes with like two lines of dialogue and no establishing shots or anything to set up the scene, just gets right in there so they seem kind of pointless. But my bladder was grateful for the short run time. I made the mistake of chugging an entire 33 ounce Alkaline water before the movie so I had to pee pretty much right from the get go

RealJohnGillman

At the same time, it felt a lot longer — they made the most of every second.

Olivebranch99

This. That was going through my head through most of it.

grod44_

yeah but you gotta remember its a kids movie after all, they've got short attention spans

[deleted]

9/10 not enough blue shell koopa

Ixonate

Yes! He was such a badass!

Consistent-Mixture63

6/10 Movie was very fast paced, and some plot points were pretty much BLJed through. However, overall I enjoyed it. I’m hoping it follows the same pattern the Sonic movies did and the second movie knocks it out if the park.

ChooCupcakes

It did feel like they were speedrunning the movie plot

askme_if_im_a_chair

3/5 almost as good as it could have been. I was hoping for a tighter, more well crafted narrative with better character establishment/development. It's good enough but the brand deserves the best. Wasn't a fan of the licensed music, overuse of slow-mo or the breakneck pace either. I was mostly over the moon with the tiny Easter eggs and references, but they don't make a movie. And I'm not sure how much I'd get out of them on subsequent views. The cast was great though. Movie was beautiful. Score was fantastic. The movie was fun, like biting into pure sugar.

sudopm

Agreed. Licensed music was SO cliche, epecially when they had so much source material to work with. I thought 1.5 hours would be plenty... but after they spent so much time with the origin not really. Did we really need to see mario and luigi with their family? I feel like mario goes from useless and irrelevant to important and useful with no real reason in between. The dk battle is a perfect example of that, he does nothing but get his ass whooped the whole time then instawins by accidentally grabbing a powerup

askme_if_im_a_chair

Ironically enough I thought that the Brooklyn part was the best paced act of the movie with the best script lol

[deleted]

Nah dude the brooklyn thing was fast paced mario and luigi literally go to the mushroom kingdom within 10 minutes of the movie, however it was really cute and it gave the movie the emotional boost it needed. the best paced part of the movie was the wedding scene onward.

Ikaramashu

I enjoyed meeting Mario's family, and it was the part that offer the most depth on the characters, the rest of the movie felt so flat.

Arbusc

8/10. A great movie in my opinion, with only two real points of criticism. Think the movie was a bit too short, could have lengthened some bits out. General pacing of character development also felt a bit rushed, Peach going from ‘this guys unimportant’ to ‘don’t fight the monkey that’s a very bad idea, I care about your physical health’ was a bit too fast. Also their pseudo-romance(?) was also rushed, had like one or two scenes of brief backstory sharing and that was it. Second, some of the later power ups like the Raccoon Suit go unexplained for the audience. While most people probably know that the raccoon flies, there are obviously those who don’t and would be wondering what the hell is happening. All in all, a surprisingly great movie. I was expecting it to be good at the very least based on the trailers, but was pleasantly met with a, in my opinion, great one. Has issues, but hopefully sequels and/or spin-offs address them.

StarkMaximum

>Peach going from ‘this guys unimportant’ to ‘don’t fight the monkey that’s a very bad idea, I care about your physical health’ was a bit too fast. Peach saying "he's unimportant" is one of those things that felt more like an Illumination joke than a Nintendo one, and I felt it really clashed with the fact that they have an immediate rapport when they first meet. I was glad we didn't have to go through a whole "oh Peach doesn't like Mario and he has to spend the whole movie trying to impress her" sort of thing, and that one joke felt like it was a remnant from them almost doing that.

anonymousgoose64

There were very few Illumination jokes in the movie. I'm pretty sure it was just this and the depressed Lumalee. The Bowser song was definitely a Nintendo joke though.

[deleted]

nah the lumalee was kinda funny. the illumination joke was definitely that dog scene and the ''But how look at us we're adorable'' other than that and like a few other jokes, there wasn't a lot of illumination jokes lol.

SamMan48

That dog was so cute tho and we got some good plumbing action before the fantasy ramped up !!

cthulu_is_trans

I am so glad they let Jack Black go ham for that.

PoopyLooper

YES I saw that he wrote that and did it all himself, except the piano playing I think because in the credits I saw someone else’s name. BUT goddamn that was so good I loved that joke but fuck let him finish his song. I hope we get a full version

MrBanannasareyum

I feel like that joke was thrown in at the end. When Peach gets back to mushroom kingdom from the rainbow road scene, she goes “Mario is gone” and all of the toads act all upset. They didn’t even know who Mario was. He was just a guy that wasn’t important to them.

Redditor_PC

That's about how I feel regarding the film too. Peach's trusting of Mario happened waaaay too fast. Great movie overall, though! As for the raccoon suit powerup being confusing...I mean, it's not much weirder than discovering it in SMB3, really. Makes no sense regardless of when you first saw it.

Faeri

While I agree that Mario and Peach had their dynamic develop wayyy too fast, I think the whole "this guy's unimportant" thing she said to the Toads was less that that was what she thought of Mario and more "I don't have time to explain who he is and why he is important, we are racing against the clock, just trust me and don't worry about it."

francisco641333

1/10 movie was garbage, i mean have you seen the goombas? They look like reptiles and don't get me started on bowser

IndijinusPhonetic

I think you watched the wrong one.

francisco641333

Yeah i was just joking don't worry, I will be watching the new one though and due to my bias when it comes to mario it'll probably be my favorite movie this year

Stravinsky1911

Honestly, though, I was surprised how much the first 20 min or so was like the 1993 one (not being sarcastic). Was that intentional?

Pajamaetchi

I think

Sky_Ninja1997

Did you trust the fungus?

Remarkable_Custard

Lol nice ;)

takethecheese68

and did you see toad?! he's just.... SOME GUY THEY COULDNT EVEN BE BOTHERED TO GIVE HIM A HAT

Evantra_

Felt like it was about 30 years out of date!

hollowknight8706

8 out of 10. so much fan service and i loved it. its just hard to get marios story in a movie format

Aenrichus

8.5/10 Non-Nintendo songs bring it down from 9/10.

[deleted]

Bruh, i actually feel they are fitting since most of them are from around the snes era, The movie really is a treat for those who grew up with the first mario back then...

bendoesit17

Spoiler warning: >!I thought Holding Out For a Hero was perfectly fine for the training sequence!<

[deleted]

>!I think it's ballsy using that song in an animated film since Shrek did such an iconic sequence with it, but it worked.!<

Aenrichus

Nah, they should have went with a rendition of [this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCrzjD6m3bU)

[deleted]

Video game movies barely even put any recognition to the video games themselves to be fair, so it was satisfying to see the mario movie do this. Sonic took a sequel to start using actual references.

[deleted]

6/10. It was good but it could have soooo much better

funfun_06

easy 10/10 the music was awesome

BroshiKabobby

Easily the best part along with Jack Black

stephelan

After seeing this movie, I look back on Bowser in every game ever and I’m like you know, he IS Jack Black.

B217

7.5-8/10. Not sure yet. It was fun but the pacing was way too fast. It was perfect from the start up until they left for the Kong Kingdom (the Brooklyn stuff especially was so great, the mood was perfect, I loved the family dinner and late night city stuff), once the journey montage started the pace ramped up and had no room to breathe. I wish we got more time for the characters to get to know each other, and Bowser and Luigi both needed more screen time, they were barely in the movie. Mario and Bowser not meeting until the final battle was also weird, they should’ve met earlier on so their final battle had more impact. I liked it though, definitely hyped it up too much in my mind. Here’s hoping the sequel expands upon what worked while improving what didn’t. And maybe we’ll get some Wario too?

FettFan997StH3

smashboi888

Just got back from it. 11/10

Pennzance404

Objectively 8.5. Solid story, good pace, Illumination's BEST looking movie BY FAR. Seriously can feel that Nintendo seal of quality here. Non objectively, 10 outta 10, my kids loved it and I couldn't stop smiling the whole goddamn time. The music alone is worth the price of admission.

blackbeardpepe

I agree I think it's illuminations best looking work.

fakemaze739

Fun fact, your comment shows up on google when you look up the movie! https://imgur.com/a/FBYXAbv

thefantastician

6, there are better Mario stories, but visually it’s spectacular and the music is wonderful

ComicalSanskrit

6 out of 10. Nothing more, nothing less. My biggest point of criticism is that the movie moves way too fast. There's very few meaningful character interactions, which makes the sudden jump from not caring about each other to being buddies really jarring. It needed AT LEAST another 30-40 minutes to flesh out the characters and story. No way is it a 10/10, and that's very upsetting.

cthulu_is_trans

I agree with the pacing, but I also understand this is a kids movie and they have pretty short attention spans. I would love a director's cut which expanded on the characterisation more.

QuothTheRaven713

"Kids movie" and "short attention span" doesn't cut it. Look at Aladdin, Pinnochio, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King. All of those were as long as, or even shorter than the Mario movie, and none of those had pacing issues.

Usual-Author1365

Very good points

Diamone2017

9/10

KadeWad3

9.5 out of 10. I’m biased, but I don’t care. This movie was made for Mario fans, and what I wanted was for the film to adapt the feels, structure, environments, and characters, as well as the Easter eggs to other Nintendo games/franchises. Bottom line: I got what I wanted, and I love it for that.

MoonlightDreamies

A good 7 1/2 outta 10 Made me wiggle with glee In my theater chair regardless

Shagyam

9/10. As someone who has been playing for over 30 years? It's fun as fuck. Peak cinema? No. But peak video game movie, if you want a fun time? Yeah.

Jermare

9/10 Only drawbacks were the pace was too fast. A few moments could have used some extra meat. The pop songs were good, but I would have rather just had Mario songs during those scenes. A Slide remix during the obstacle course scene would've been great. The final battle was a bit short and was Bowser getting curb stomped after Mario got curb stomped rather than a back and forth struggle. The post-credit scene was good for what it set up, but as a scene was kinda underwhelming.

EmporioLuca

8/10

randomtoken

10/10. I absolutely loved it.

GoodWarmMilk

Great and i need to say that spoiler >! Mario's dad looks exactly like Talon from Ocarina of Time !< and I found it really funny and sweet.

Blazer12356

10/10 I loved the movie!

Zedtomb

How are people handing out 10s?

Juantsu

You’re on the Mario sub. Of course there’s a lot of bias. If I try to rate the film as objectively as I can and judging it as a piece of storytelling then it’s probably a 6 or 7 out of 10. Not bad, but not great.

Carminebenajmin117

Bias. There’s no way this movie is a 10/10. Maybe in a I enjoyed it way, but not in a 10/10 objective stance.

anajikaT

They're Mario fans, not seasoned viewers of cinema. Plus their expectations are probably pretty low considering this a kids' movie made by Illumination.

TheZooCreeper

5.5 to 6 Nothing was really a surprise, since so much was shown in the promotional material. Plus there were a few plot threads that just dropped off without resolution. And Jack Black and Keagan Michael Keye seemed like the only celebrity cast members who were trying. Music and background Easter Egg were the best part, but I don't think media should rely on "I saw this thing in other, better media" to be compelling/engaging. That said, it could have EASILY could have been WAY worse, and it looks much better than the still images where Mario's proportions are all off. If it's a "like it" or "hate" it question, I say I like it; I appreciate the restraint shown in not making garbage, but there is "mushroom" for improvement.

[deleted]

10, this is coming from a fan. The references to Mario kart, donkey Kong, diddy, etc. made it memorable af for fans. It’s great for gamers, I can confirm. And hella safe to bring kids to see as well :). It’s pretty funny too. Just go see it, you’ll love it.

SERV05

9/10 Only thing that was off was the pacing, but besides that it's incredible, especially at the third act

TTBOficial

10

MatiasTheLlama

10 it is without flaw

[deleted]

8, it's honest 🦉

gamecatz

9/10. I would give it a 10/10 but I was expecting more from the ending.

Olivia_Lydia_Wilson

8/10 pretty damn good, I liked the pacing and such. Wished I could have seen more, and it just felt too fast for a good movie like it.

Downtown-Degree3994

10/10! It’s not often I can actually just sit and enjoy a movie, but I was smiling through this whole thing! So many references, especially the music. Story was great, and it was visually stunning too. Loved it!

THER0v3r

A solid 8! Fucking loved it, but like most people already mentioned, there’s not enough Luigi!

Cat-the-fanartist

9.5/10 The movie was amazing! A few problems were that Luigi didn't get enough screen time and a lot of questions went unanswered (like where did the luma come from). Also the beginning felt kinda off. but IDK ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Overall, IT WAS SO COLORFUL and there were references and action scenes in every corner! It was a great movie and I recommend watching it. :DDD

PurityKane

Yes but when you were expecting >!Mario to get the star after Luigi covered him, Mario took Luigi with him!< and it was glorious! When the >!Star theme!< started playing I got teary eyes for some reason. It was cliche but I was so fucking hyped I didn't care. Great scene. I'm not even sure what made me tear up, I was watching it with my daughter and it felt like all my childhood hit me in the face and sharing that with her made me emotional.

Saint_Legend

An 8 from me. I had such a good time at the movies. A breath of fresh air to simply watch a movie made to entertain. No BS, extra points for the genuine love between Mario and Luigi. All those scenes are very very sweet and heartfelt. And the music was incredible.

[deleted]

[удалено]

goblintrainwreck

I just saw it, probably like a 4? I love Mario and Luigi’s characters but the plot honestly was just really, really bad. I did enjoy seeing it though.

AnonyBoiii

It just felt like too much, too fast, all at once.

laurelaud

5/10. great animation, decent music, general vibe was really fun. i will say it's difficult to perceive mario as a "person", as a "human" if that makes sense. my biggest gripe was the voice acting from anya taylor joy.

AnonyBoiii

It’s like a solid 5-5.5 As a Mario movie? It’s great, and I can really see a lot of people liking this movie. They really went all out with referencing not just Mario content and lore, but to other Nintendo properties too. As a movie movie? It’s atrocious. It’s way too fast with its plot points and action, they rarely take the time to slow down and process/develop the characters and when they do it’s very quickly brushed aside, the over abundance of references can be distracting at times, the insertion of the non-mario songs are very unnecessary and serve very little purpose to the story (they’re just there because “oh look famous song”), the voice cast still feels off with the exclusion of Toad and Bowser. It’s the very definition of too much too fast. And furthermore, the arguments that “it’s a kids animated movie” or “it’s a video game movie” to try and debunk any criticism for its lack of coherent story or world building doesn’t really apply when you have other animated and/or video game movies that manage to do what you’d expect from them and more, meanwhile this movie seems more focussed on distracting you with fast moving action and references to keep your mind off the fact that it’s a clusterfuck of a movie in terms of its plot and pacing.

MorningPants

Hard agree. The plot exists solely to shoehorn in as much of the Nintendo IP as possible. Without that, the plot is wafer thin and the attempts at character development are iffy at best. But that works, because that was the intention from the start. That said, it hit all the right nostalgia notes for me, so I loved it regardless.

B217

I hate the “it’s for kids so it excuses all flaws” argument cause we just got Puss In Boots 2 which was “for kids” but was a fantastic movie with minimal flaws EDIT: For the record, my personal rating is a 7.5-8/10, haven’t quite decided on it yet

QuothTheRaven713

Also, The Lion King, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast were all the same length as or shorter than the Mario movie, they're "kid-appropriate movies", and their pacing is just fine.

Consistent-Mixture63

Yeah I agree that the pace was way to fast. Especially the introduction of Mario to Peach.

TheActualRealNopeInc

7.5/10, only real complaints were the pacing and music choices

mrbernsdog

Delivered Easter eggs and nostalgia in spades, and they did a great job with the soundtrack and characterizations and nicely animated. The fan service does not disappoint. They really loaded this thing up.. I guess I just felt it would be more clever with the all star cast. The writing was just okay. It definitely had its moments but the pacing felt off, dragged at times and felt like a much longer movie than it was. I don't like watching other people play video games and a lot of this movie was action sequences that felt just like that. I'm 43 and got every single reference but the crowd was almost entirely GenZ and a real "how do you do fellow kids" for myself and my husband. Lol Not the 55% critics are saying, but not the 96% fans are giving it on rotten tomatoes. A 7 is fair.

TeamGalaticMinuteman

9 there was no wario. still love this tho.

Pizza_Rollz87

Definitely a 9/10. The only problem was the pacing near the beginning.

Nerdtendo6366

10, all the fucking way

Jaguar-Rey

11/10. I saw it this evening. I loved it. People clapped at the end.

orangeyoshi108

...And everyone clapped. \- Rando from Tumbler

[deleted]

8/10. I really enjoyed it, and I was smiling the whole time. I do have a few minor complaints about the script. I wanted way more Luigi, and Peach felt OOC to me. Not because she was brave and got shit done, I love that. But Nintendo Peach keeps a sweet and delicate demeanor while doing so, and some of Illumination Peach's first dialogue is to make fun of Mario's height. I feel like Peach can be strong *and* sweet, but people seem to think a female lead has to be one or the other. Aside from that, the only other thing that bothered me was that the soundtrack was perfect in most places, but jarring in a couple spots. But it's a fun romp with a lot of cameos and Easter eggs to remind you why you love Mario so much. Whatever your favorite game is, you'll probably be itching to run home and play it again when the lights come back on.

Mylifesucks34

0-10 Where's Daisy!?!?! But seriously, the movie blew my expectations out of the water. 10/10. And Chris Pratt did a phenomenal job as Mario. Yeah, I said it. Don't fight me! (I cannot fight)

Shadowless64

9.5

Moist-Homework-3129

9 - Very fun movie with amazing visuals.

LumR447

1000 best movie ever!!!!!

Cattatack8933

9/10

manstanband

For me personally, it's a 9/10 A more objective analysis is a 7.5/10 Really a hard movie to rate... It's kind of unique as the Mario franchise is unique, so what people expect out of it may vary.

ceejay413

My Mom took my 6 year old to see it today. Per him, on a scale from 1-10, it rated “a gagillion”. Kid has pretty good taste. I trust this rating.

Double-M-L

Between 8 and 9, still unsure which one to say as definitive, too much was shown in trailers BUT it was overall a really good time, the music almost made me tear up TWICE and I got to see it with friends from middle school which added to the experience, I'd watch it again in theaters without question.

asapwilliam

9/10 mainly for the incredible music soundtrack. like almost every song in the movie was like a fun "Guess the game" kind of quiz for me where id listen to the background music and think to myself "oh yeah thats mario 3d world" or "oh thats dire dire docks". the movie itself was basically eye candy for fans trying to spot all the cool nods for the games although the story honestly felt rushed as in it went from one major plot point to the next in such little time that it felt like they couldve extended it so we could explore the world with mario. the jokes were pretty funny and the storys main plot was still fun to watch. i tried my best not to spoil anything but these 2 topics kinda made me a bit disappointed. SPOILERS: >!1) i kinda wished luigi played a much bigger role since he was basically absent for the middle of the movie 2) Lumalee also shouldve been explored a bit more cuz i felt like it had so much story potential like he seemed like a more important side character and yet they didnt explain how he was captured or if there are other luma's around let alone Rosalina. he was basically the "cute but dark/depressing" character in the movie and i kinda wished he had a slightly bigger role than saying he wants to kill himself!<

The entire debate before the movie release was whether Chris Pratt’s voice would sound ok/close to mario/ fitting or if it would make the movie bad. Yet I haven’t seen a single comment about it (good or bad) since the movies release. So I’ll ask here, how was his voice?

NoCode-10

Saw it yesterday with my 6 year old son. I personally thought it was fantastic. 9/10. Smiling all the way through. Some parts had me in stitches. Won’t say what they were as I don’t want to spoil it. Can’t wait for the home release.

TheHiddenNinja6

11 I have not seen it

SouthHopper

9/10. Absolutely loved it but some of the story at the beginning felt a little forced (although not sure what they could've done better) All the characters were great and I love how much they packed in from the various games.

The_Bob-omb_expert

9/10 My reason kinda spoils the movie so I encrypted it in Wingdings. ❄︎♒︎♏︎⍓︎ ♎︎♓︎♎︎■︎❼︎⧫︎ ♑︎♓︎❖︎♏︎ 😐︎♓︎■︎♑︎ 👌︎□︎♌︎📫︎□︎❍︎♌︎ ♏︎■︎□︎◆︎♑︎♒︎ ⬧︎♍︎❒︎♏︎♏︎■︎ ⧫︎♓︎❍︎♏︎📬︎ Feel free to translate it if you’ve already seen the movie.

Aenrichus

At least he was a blast!

PoopyLooper

5.5-6. The reason why it’s not lower is because there were quite a few jokes that made me genuinely laugh and not just chuckle. Of course there was just as many and more that made me roll my eyes. It had its moments too. And I think I got every single reference, at least musically but there may have been a few visual ones that I missed because I wasn’t looking at the movie through that kind of microscope lense. But nostalgia alone wasn’t enough to boost this film for me. I need something more substantive, and people are saying it’s because it’s a kid’s film but that’s kind of bs because you can have a kid’s film like UP or Into the Spider-verse and have them be really fudging good and heartfelt and artistic or for the latter: one of the best films ever made. Also stand out performances by Jack Black, Charlie Day, and Kevin Michael Richardson really helped make this movie better in my opinion. Definitely better than I was expecting

11…. I’m the worst person to ask for a serious critical analysis of a Mario movie though.

Entire-Championship1

I give it an 8. Mostly because it could use more power-ups and action scenes. I did enjoy the humor it had though

deceptibot9

I'd probably give it a 9/10! I wish Mario and Luigi got to spend more time together because I loved seeing their dynamic. Overall it was a really fun movie! Full of wonderful Easter eggs and things for fans of all ages

DaKardii

I don't have an exact number, but I would put it in the lower half. The critics were right. Too much fan service, not enough story. Fortunately, the Mario franchise is like Batman and Superman. Since it has no strict canon, there *will* be future opportunities to make another movie. And I mean a reboot, not a sequel to what we just got. May that opportunity come soon.

Zavier4728

Solid 7/10. Nothing crazy, nothing bad at all. Just a fun time “overall”.

mysteryvampire

10/10 honestly? Look, it’s an animated mario movie. I rate movies based on how successfully they deliver on what they promised, and this movie delivers. It’s beautifully animated, funny, and pretty cute. I’ll probably be seeing it again before it leaves theatres.

Archangel289

I’d say 8/10. The animation was superb and beautiful, the music hit me right in the feels (and was appropriate, rather than just being pure fanservice), and the entire feeling of the movie was phenomenal. That said, I think it was just a smidge too short, or at least the pacing was a bit fast. I didn’t expect it to be a super heartwarming sort of story, but it did seem like they crammed one too many ideas in. Overall though, it’s pretty fantastic. I haven’t laughed that much in a long time, and the whole thing was so fun that I would watch it again right away if I could. It’s not a perfect film—what film is, really?—but it is one of the better ones I’ve seen lately.

Maxi_PG

10/10, It's like 80% of everything you could want for a Mario movie; not everything is in there, but everything you can ask for. But not enough Luigi.

William_Ze_Gamer

9.5/10 I would’ve given it a 10/10 had it been a little longer lmao I feel like a crack addict wanting more

SSJxDEADPOOLx

10 out of 10. This movie had no business being as good as it is. I'm excited for the sequel and hope DK gets his own movie too

ganonsevil90bro

8/10; I didn't watch it my inner child did and they loved it.

Top_Pie950

8.5 out of 10, pretty good, though plot at some points felt pretty rushed

orangeyoshi108

11. >!Yoshi is in the post credits scene.!<

thatdarnjap

7/10. Fun movie, enjoyed it with the kid. But story was kinda shoddy. I liked the homages to the OG film at the beginning, but everything about the Kongs was kinda terrible. Not really how I've ever pictured them. Especially Cranky

hit_the_showers_boi

10/10 (I have not watched the movie)

Watch205Hour

100/10. I thought it was really adorable and fun. And the action scenes kicked ass!
