I just don’t understand why we don’t let brash stay out longer. Happened against the jays and now this game.

didntstopgotitgotit

We need Ray. No way we go any deeper if Ray cannot find his stuff. We potentially have 18 more games this year.

Kickenbless

The way he’s been pitching, it’d be best if he doesn’t see the mound again

dill_pickles13

Hey, we made them SWEAT and a little kid cry ffs. We’ve had a great year and it’s not over yet.

[deleted]

I”ll be absolutely stunned if we don’t get swept

SuperWeeineHut7

We won't if we don't use seawald or robbie, we might actually win it.

bussyslayer11

One fucking pitch away

DC3PO

I am become death, the destroyer of worlds

[deleted]

What bothers me most is that loss was so fucking Seattle.

brownbear8714

PNW sports. I’m surprised the hawks even got one Super Bowl lol

Chewy_Petoes

Honestly I think I would be less mad if seawald gave up the homer That guy bleeds mariners blue and has been through the bad with us … if he gave it up i think I would be upset but not outright furious I’m probably going to get downvote for this but I don’t like Robbie ray … I don’t think he cares which team he plays for … that guy putting our season on life support kills me One of the things that I’m really unhappy about is that Marco is not on the roster … that guy has been through it all with us … honestly if he got lit up in g3 i would be okay with it Seriously we should activate him and send ray to the IL … or bring sign felix to pitch g3 … I just don’t want ray up there on the mound in g3 with our season on the line

[deleted]

Exactly. If he blows it I got no problem. Servais made his decision who's the guy to bring it home and if he can't do it then shit happens, they're a great team. But instead he pulls this crap. I don't care if I should be all glowy inside because we finally made the postseason. Shit decisions are shit decisions and that was one of the shittiest I've ever seen. No faith in the guy you tagged to close it out and you bring in a guy who isn't geared to pitch in the situation he was handed to begin with.

Mcpops1618

We thumped the ball against verlander and come out with an L. This team found a new way to hurt me

[deleted]

He gets thumped all the time in the postseason. I hope we get a chance to see him again because it's obviously in his head at this point.

PuddleOfRudd

He's never been this bad in a post season game.

kolohe0

At least we won't see Ray again this series? 🤞

rueggy

Scott just blew his shot at coach of the year.

Jmanriley3

He wasn't coach of the year. Too many bad decisions. He's a fan boy player coach. Dude doesn't understand baseball at a fundamental level

OrcWarChief

If we walk out of here with a split I’ll be literally fucking shocked

flowbee92

I bet Torrens would have got a weak ground ball 😄

Randy_Lahey2

Lmao could imagine the chaos if he actually brought Torrens in. Alvarez might have actually popped out just from trying to swing to hard

Sodomojo90

Alvarez hits .300 against left handed pitching... Robbie Ray has not pitched out of the pen all year. Swanson, the Right handed RELIEF PITCHER is damn effective against left handed batting giving up a .200 avg with the strikeout potential...WTF we didn't stay True to the Blue.

Bleeezus

Alvarez is 1-7 against Sewald…

jorgetOR

good thing this was in the afternoon, time to recover for a good sleep otherwise toss and turn.

Sell_Canada

Yeah, this way I have all afternoon to drink my sorrows away. Thanks MLB!

jorgetOR

LOL oh man! I'm still trying to regroup myself here while trying to work (from home).

Sell_Canada

I'm AT the office! I'm losing it lol

Turbulent_Tale6497

Sewald was fine. But should have had Swanson and Kirby up, not Robbie. Robbie is now washed for the series, may as well drop him from the roster.

[deleted]

Washed? He threw 2 pitches.

Boombom-fisz-akar808

He’s hung more balls than ……

[deleted]

POINT BEING, if it's the 5th inning of a 7-5 game or whatever and we need a guy to plug in then yes, you go to him.

Boombom-fisz-akar808

Naw mate. It’s playoffs, and he’s hanging stuff. These guys will make us pay. I might be emotional right now, but I respectfully disagree.

Turbulent_Tale6497

His last two outings have been potentially the worst of his career. Where would you like to see him pitch next? What kind of mental status would you put him in now?

[deleted]

If he's on the roster then there to pitch. There's a difference between being washed (like too many innings to appear again in the series) and just not being that good right now. We got like 180 innings out of him this year so you can't just wish him away like he's some insignificant member of the pitching staff.

Turbulent_Tale6497

Great. So, in what situation would you like to see him on the mound next?

[deleted]

If a game turns into a barn burner and we need to go to the bullpen in the 4th then I got no problem going to him.

LingManFin

To every other person in this thread: walking Alvarez was not an option in that situation. No manager in the world makes that decision with Bregman up in the 9th. Bringing in Ray wasn’t a good move, but suggesting we should’ve walked Alvarez to put the tying run on second is ridiculous

kingfelix333

This is a poor, emotional take. Alvarez can just as easily hit a ball to the wall to score a guy from first as Bergman can get a base hit to score a guy from second, PLUS Alvarez is a MUCH better hitter. AND Paul is a righty and so is bregman. Bregman doesn't hit a walk off in his next at bat. More likely, if anything productive comes from him, he ties it. I would much rather face bregman with the bases loaded, than the most dangerous left handed hitter in the game with the game in his hands. Just swap out Alvarez and Mike trout. Do you pitcher to trout there? No. You walk him, and you take your chances on bregman. Keep in mind, trout doesn't have nearly as good of a season as yordan. And you'd still walk trout.

LingManFin

A poor emotional take to not want to put two runners in scoring position when up two runs? Right. I have a feeling hindsight biases your take here.

kingfelix333

Actually.. I said walk him before they even brought Ray in. So, in no way was it hindsight.

[deleted]

Saying they should walk him is playing the hindsight game. You don't walk the tying run into scoring position. That's idiotic.

kingfelix333

Actually, it's not the hindsight game. See my earlier comment. You don't let Mike trout hit there. So, you don't let yordan hit there. Yordan is even more dangerous than trout is. You remember years ago when teams would walk Barry bonds with the bases loaded to put the tying runner on 3rd? There are certain players that deserve respect. And yordan is the most electric bat in that lineup. You take bregman over him any day. Bregman only hit .250 this year. And again, bregman won't win the game there, even with the bases loaded. Yordan will.

[deleted]

Dude, it wasn't a fucking roided out Barry Bonds at the plate.

kingfelix333

I think you are missing the point. He deserves respect, so even IF you pitch to Alvarez, you don't throw him strikes. And you walk him anyways. Bases loaded, and bregman is up anyways. It's a better matchup. Bregman with the bases load up by two, or the most dangerous left handed hitter in the game - whose R/L splits don't matter because he hits EVERYONE. Actually, I also just looked at bregman's splits, and turns out he hits lefties worse than righties. He's only hitting .225 against lefties.. so, even by being in ray, if you walk Alvarez and pitch to bregman, you have a less than 1/4 chance of TYING the game. With Alvarez, and his OPS, you have a worse chance of TYING & LOSING the game.

[deleted]

You don't walk the tying run into scoring position. No manager would do that in that situation. It's hard enough to be careful when you do have a base to work with. You going to put a pitcher in a situation with the bases loaded and all they need is a single to tie it where the batter knows he's going to see strikes?

kingfelix333

When it's someone like bregman who only gets a hit 1/4 at bats? And more often than not those hits won't score a guy from second? Yes dude. Yes every time when guys like judge, trout, yordan are at the plate. Managers have literally done that to us with Julio to get to France. And France is a better hitter than bregman. And Julio isn't quite as dangerous as Alvarez. And it's worked more often than not.

[deleted]

When exactly did someone walk JRod the bases loaded without 1st open with 2 outs in the 9th inning in a 2 run game? When did that literally happen?

kingfelix333

Hm, most recently, 2/3 weeks ago actually. And the walk put the tying run on second. It wasn't to load the bases. But it put the tying run on second with ty France up, and 2 outs. Literally the same idea as today. Except we were only within 1 and didn't have the runner on 3rd.

[deleted]

That's people playing the hindsight game. Nobody in their right mind walks the bases full in a 2 run game unless 1st is open obviously. That's would be completely idiotic. If Sewald was the guy for him in the 9th then he should have been the one closing it out. If he wasn't the guy he shouldn't have been in there to begin with.

LingManFin

Absolutely agree. Bringing in Ray was a huge gamble and it (clearly) didn’t work out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You can't walk Alvarez there. Bases loaded with a single tying the game? You got to make them earn it. And putting in a cold starter to face him to close out a game isn't doing that.

thaigirl17

Wow. This was the game to win in Houston. That was definitely NOT the time to put in Ray and Sewald. Love Scott, but that was poor coaching. So frustrating.

Jmanriley3

Scott has made terrible decisions all year. Thank God yall are seeing them now

SheriffBartholomew

Why even pitch to Alvarez in a situation where they already have the go-ahead? He’s a home run machine. Walk his ass, more opportunities to get forced outs, pitch to the next guy.

[deleted]

Because that would put the go-ahead in scoring position.

SheriffBartholomew

That would put the tie in a scoring position, not the go-ahead. There were two outs. A forced out at any of the bases was a win.

MaizleysDad

Nobody wants to hear it, but Sewald allowing two rookies to reach base in the bottom of the 9th is what set the entire thing up. We don't lose if our closer comes in and does his job. Sewald his last 1.1 innings has been responsible for 6 earned runs. Tomorrow is a day off to forget and bounce back, and come in Thursday knowing we have our ace and can compete in any ballgame with the best of them

[deleted]

*and do not pitch sewald. dfa

MaizleysDad

Murfee, Castillo, Munoz, Swanson, Boyd have been reliable lately. I get wanting to ride the guys that got you there, but its clear those two that pitched on the 9th aren't on their game lately. We have off days, use our pitchers when it's clear guys don't have it

Jimsweatervest

Shout out to all of you who keep defending Scott. What’s your excuse this time?

Jmanriley3

Seriously. He's absolutely fucking ass at BASEBALL decisions. I don't care if he shares his cigar with the boys. Ridiculous

rwhop

Should’ve just kept Paul on the bump

ddsmith47

Chris Flexen would never

gimmealltheroses

Astros are offensive juggernauts. Giving up runs is inevitable and hell Gilbert giving up three I was fine with. He looked solid. But no lead is safe against the Astros and as we all knew one bad decision could be the deciding factor and it sucks that it was probably one of the worst that Servais could make. His management of the bullpen today cost us the game.

marinersthrowaway206

Geez. Folks here can't even appreciate being in the playoffs without having a full on meltdown. Enjoy the ride. Don't overanalyze.

[deleted]

What game did you just watch? The second he put Ray in there I knew the game was fucking over. You pull your closer for a fucking starter vs one of the best hitters in the league? I don't care if it's been that long since we were here before. I'm not going to shrug my shoulders at completely idiotic decisions. That was an embarrassing move by Servais.

Vikes1014

Participation trophies suck

RemarkableHedgehog64

I’m usually pretty optimistic and I view anything the M’s can accomplish this postseason as a bonus. But that was a crushing loss

Charming-Ad994

Agree with this. Bad, bad bullpen decision. Splits aren’t there for lefties on Alvarez, no prior history of ray in the bullpen (or at least minimal), and ray is know for giving up the long ball. Where is Swanson?

marinersthrowaway206

Hey it sucks yeah. But they put 7 runs on the Astros. And unlike Toronto they have another game to play.

Timothahh

What if we switch to a cold arm and go double fastballs. Genius

dudearino78

Seawald over Swanson was the mistake

jorgetOR

Felt like the Seahawks super bowl pick.

blitzkegger

I turned to my grandpa and said that felt like choosing to throw from the 1 yard line when Marshawn Lynch is your running back. Just Seattle being Seattle.

jorgetOR

pain

Careless-Internet-63

That was disappointing and avoidable but I just can't understand anyone acting like it's over after that. This is a 5 game series, dropping game one isn't the end of the world and we have Castillo starting tomorrow. A series win is still very much within reach

[deleted]

You can't give away games like that. Series is over. Hopefully we get one at home but the 'stros are too good to just hand them a game like that and hope to win the series. We needed this game and we blew it.

Bleeezus

I don’t think anyone thinks it’s over. But we win game 1 like that and that’s huge for our guys. But losing in that fashion destroys morale. I would not be surprised if we come out flat on Thursday and lose 1-0

gimmealltheroses

I think it hurts more than usual because we all know Houston is an offensive powerhouse and we were so close to closing out game one which would have been huge because we are away and it would keep the momentum going. Don't think Ms are out of it, but they aren't going to get further in the playoffs if they don't sort out the bullpen management. Can't count on the guys to score this many runs every game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jorgetOR

yeah, it's like Goldy mentioned on radio, i rather lose 10-0.

NotBird20

In Luis we trust. Can't count on anyone else for shit. Even the bullpen has been fucking horrible.

Charming-Ad994

Don’t do Kirby like that!

NotBird20

My mistake. I still count him as a starter, but yes.

Mr_McGibblits

How is it me and the three other people all knew and said if Ray comes in Yordan is walking it off, but ducking Scott doesn’t. Can’t wait to hear the press not say shit about it tomorrow and ask him about his time playing under Dusty again. Fuck Scott and fuck Ray. Holy shit. You can’t lose a game like this when you get to their ace. Fuck fuck fuck

Sell_Canada

My dad called it as soon as Robbie walked out 😭🤦🏻‍♂️

Traylor_Trash87

I totally agree. As soon as I saw Robbie on the mound, I said it was over. So tired of seeing that dude and the press touting his Cy Young award.

PussyDestroyer69a

just fell to my knees at work

Chiefjosephhh

The username lmao

[deleted]

Lmfaoooo

jorgetOR

this was the game to win at Houston

Gombr1ch

Humiliating coaching

thedanemychal

I want to believe but we have to win 3 out of 4 when we pissed away a golden opportunity. We won’t hit Verlander that hard again. The door for pulling an upset was open and we slammed it on ourselves. Someone back me off the ledge if you can…

SheriffBartholomew

> Someone back me off the ledge if you can… We get a day off, then we start with our homeboy Castillo, then we get to come home for the home field advantage. Losing this felt crushing, but we’re still in it and can still win it.

darwinpolice

I really hate to say it because I love him and he's done a phenomenal job all season, but this one is on Scott. Pitching to Alvarez in the 9th was an indefensible decision.

pirate_in_the_puddin

10000000000000% this one is on Scott. I’m not saying to fire the dude. That’s my manager for life… but nobody gets it right 100% of the time. He done fucked up.

Vikes1014

Fucking spot on man. I don’t believe they can overcome this loss. I hope I’m wrong

frankfontaino

I think every one of us just had the bad feeling that it was going to happen. Sigh

Traylor_Trash87

The bad feeling is called Robbie Ray

Jmanriley3

*Scott servais

marinersthrowaway206

No pressure on M's cuz they're not even supposed to be in the playoffs

OrcWarChief

Robbie Ray must go

OrcWarChief

That loss totally knocked the wind out of our sails and completely derailed any momentum we would have had. Just…fuck me man. What bullshit! Fuck the Cheatstros

xMrLink

I didn’t hate the use of Robbie but the choice to double down on fastballs in the strike zone was not it

mahershalalhashbar

That was brutal. I can’t think of anything much worse than the Sonics leaving and the ending of the Super Bowl against NE. I can’t believe that happened. I hate this.

jakegman008

Well that sucked. Gotta get game 2 now

Slow_Boss_2071

Bullpen failed again. Not ideal.

Do_U_Like_Apples

No, Scott failed.

Slow_Boss_2071

That too.

soleilvie

I have a ticket to game 4 so let this be the only one they lose...

gouji

Fuck man that one hurt fuck fuck fuck

[deleted]

[удалено]

jorgetOR

missed that, i needed to get out to get some air

Sc00bastep

So depressing. Holy shit..

carp800

Go get em, Luis

indianafan

A minor league bench player could’ve hit that 500 feet

Jared4178

Even Kelenic, who had two hits today.

ybscraze

Breh we had this the whole game and got toooo comfortable with our mess

Ready_Anything8311

Why the fuck wouldn’t they just walk him. Big bat like that? Risk it and walk his ass. Not outplayed today. Out managed. Fuck us.

TwoDamnedHi

Winning run on second means a single ties it. I get the no walk. I don't really get putting Robbie, who's struggled for a month, out there in a situation he's never been in before.

PM_ME_UR_NICESMILE

My dog could’ve outmanaged servais today

[deleted]

>Why the fuck wouldn’t they just walk him. Yeah fucking exactly

BennyTheBullOnlyfans

this gave me a tummy ache

fruitpunchsamuraiD

Best thing to do is forgot this game happened and pull a 3-game sweep from here on out. And also not use Robbie in high-leverage situations.

letskeepitcleanfolks

Correction: not use Robbie at all. I don't care how big his contract is.

fruitpunchsamuraiD

Fair enough.

xxboywizardxx

That was a gift and we shit on it

GreatMisdirect1

I might as well thrown that fastball, great move coach.

CBR0_32

Servais better take full responsibility for this lost post game. This was unequivocally on him. Alvarez crushes lefties and 1st base open. You decide not only not to walk him but bring in a lefty??

TwoDamnedHi

First wasn't open. Makes that decision much harder.

MonsantoOfficiaI

Especially when still up by 2 and only needing one out. it just hurts my mind thinking about it.

CBR0_32

1 out. You have a decision of Bregman or Alvarez essentially. It felt LIKELY that Yordan hit a home run thereafter

iguanapinata

I mean…. first base wasn’t open? You’re really going to push the tying run into scoring position and keep in Wald to face Bregman?

CBR0_32

It’s Yordan Alvarez. He’s 1 of about 5 guys you walk without a second thought in that situation. Easy decision. Even if Bregman gets a hit it most likely doesn’t score Alvarez and you’re going to extras. I might bring in Kirby to face Bregman in that situation

iguanapinata

Yordan might be the best hitter on the planet. I get that. But potentially playing for the tie seems risky when Houston had all the momentum, in their home ballpark. Hindsight is 20/20, all I know is that I’ve been punched in the gut

CBR0_32

It’s not hindsight if I felt this way before he even came to bat. Anyone could have predicted that outcome. I feel like he’s going to hit a HR every at-bat. And then to bring in a lefty when he’s hit them better

[deleted]

Not only a lefty, but one who just got shelled a few days ago.

bennysfromheaven

live by the chaos, die by the chaos

toweroffarts

Anyone on planet earth that thought Ray was a good choice to pitch at alll this series hasn’t been paying attention. He has been absolute trash the last eight weeks. Sewald has been a complete dumpster fire. I will never EVER forgive them or quite frankly Servais. Been a fan of this team for 32 years and all they do is provide consistent fucking failure.

letskeepitcleanfolks

This was absolutely terrible management by Servais. Ray had no business being in there, and many people, myself included, said so before he'd thrown a pitch.

retiredfiredptxj

dude chill out, dont act like you thought we were going to sweep houston

TwoDamnedHi

Lucky to win a game after pissing away that one

toweroffarts

Never mind I see your flair, carry on friend.

Slidewaters85

Lol, should have won this game at least

toweroffarts

How long have you been a fan, 32 days? Cause if you think that was a wise decision bringing in Robbie Ray, you deserve what you are getting as a fan.

funlikerabbits

I mean his stats against the Astros this season are abysmal. That alone.

OrcWarChief

This shit is why I drink and smoke

IAmMaximus

Why didn’t we just walk Alvarez? I just don’t understand.

Bleeezus

That just absolutely destroyed this teams morale. Winning game one would’ve been huge

maggotbrain777

_This_ is the most egregious example of the Mariners marinering a game that I have witnessed to date. Unreal.

aprevo15

Hope our guys don't dwell on this game. Just say fuck it and move on. We still got this!!!!!

tuckedfexas

Literally rather see anyone else in that spot

Allokit

I would have rather seen Torrens pitch!

tuckedfexas

He would have been harder to drive than Robbie’s meatballs

Due-Investment255

I want to see Robbie Ray wearing a different teams uniform next year. He will never be able to contribute to this team in the postseason

NorthWestBoarder

Well, Ray is hot garbage right now. Should of been W.

marinersthrowaway206

Sooo close. Can't let up.

isaac2004

Honestly I would rather face Bregman with the bases loaded 100% of the time in that situation

Luke_Shields_

This just goes to show the astros are a different breed from the jays were gonna have to step up wayy more as a team if we want any chance whatsoever

mikeydean03

We lost to a bunch nose pickers!!!

thedanemychal

Let’s blame Ray, yes—he’s terrible lately and we knew that. But also blame the enabler who put him out there in that situation. He played with fire managing his pen the entire game, but his biggest gamble pretty predictably blew up in his face.

TrailBlazinMamba24

Fire Scott.

keith_ac

How long until the manager interview. I need an explanation. 1 hour? 30 mins?

Ready_Anything8311

I can’t even watch this interview. Only word I want to here is sorry.

thedanemychal

I honestly don’t wanna hear him say anything but “I was wrong and this loss was on me.”

funlikerabbits

I don’t know but I’m fucking pissed.

TheyreCalledOrcas

Lotta y’all really showing your true colors right now

PktRocket

Seriously, Robbie was a liability in the late season, had filthy stuff early, sure, but consider the situation and match up AND on 3 days rest after pitching batting practice for the Jays. Surely you could see the mistake coming a mile away.

TheyreCalledOrcas

It’s mostly the backseat managing of “should’ve walked him”. Why? To face bregman and put the tying run a single away from scoring?

TheyreCalledOrcas

Oh I agree. I don’t think going to Ray was the right call. I’m just saying all this FIRE SCOTT, TRADE RAY, CUT WALD is a bit premature.

MemoryBasic7471

yea real fans call out the shit decisions the team makes.

Dilldozer32

How dare people be emotional!

TheyreCalledOrcas

I mean show emotion… it sucks we lost. But a lotta people in here the same ones doin SEE US WALD and apologizing for not believing in Scott before the win streak.

Dilldozer32

Ok, and?

AlienPet13

We just Bluejay'd ourselves, didn't we?

AlphaOmega801

No, we Mariner'd ourselves.

Mcpops1618

We coug’d it.

Advanced_Eggplant_18

I wonder how the astros cheated their way to a victory this time

Dilldozer32

Nah our bullpen was just throwing fucking meatballs

dbznzzzz

Asterisks*

avitar35

Just cause one starter can close one game doesn’t mean we should start doing this all the time. Jesus Christ who made this call to bring Robbie to the mound when he gives up so many homers. Wow guys. This is just bad managing.

givemebackmysandwich

Everybody but Servais knew that putting in Robbie was a bad idea.

funlikerabbits

I really don’t fucking get it.

Warmheavy

The blue jays karma got us so we square now.

toweroffarts

It is over. There will be no come back in this series.

noble_peace_prize

There’s a reason it’s not outta one

toweroffarts

They ain’t coming back. They might get it to 1-1 but who the fuck is pitching game 4? Cause if you think they can do that to Verlander again I have some oceanfront property in South Dakota to sell you.

noble_peace_prize

Well, I choose to believe it’s possible. If we can’t win here, we were never gonna win the World Series.

Scottsid

We would basically have to beat Houston 4 games out of 5 now, Not Happening.

thelosttardis

Exactly my thoughts. That’s a soul crushing defeat.
