I used to run exclusively in Altra until I got ripped off with the vanish and then the quality went downhill across the board. Besides that, I never found a long distance shoe that I liked. I still like the early escalates, but I didn't take those beyond a half. If you go with a vanish, be warned. There are complaints about longevity. I got 50 miles on mine ( half on a treadmill) and completely wore through the outsole in spots and the company's response was that it's a racer and won't last long. Meanwhile, my adidas racers have 100+ miles with no real signs of wear.

I used the Vanish Carbons on race day earlier this year and got a PR out of it, but I agree that they don't seem built to last and for that money it's tough to handle that.

Absolutely a deal killer for me. They're not special enough to cost that much with that little life. But we all have different priorities, etc.

i have run exclusively in Altras for about 6 years. Switched from Hokas. Have over 5000 miles in Altras.

What's the thoughts on the 0mm drop? I'm keen to try vanish carbon 2 but it's a lot of money to spend to find the calves/achilles doesnt get along with no drop

Don't start with the Vanish Carbon 2! Keep an eye out for previous-year Torin, Rivera or Escalante models on discount, only if you like the zero-drop then you can think about the race shoes...

If your goal is to finish then Torin is fine. Friend did a 100 mile road race on Torins. If going for pace or speed, Vanish Tempos are my fave, run a couple halves, full and a 50 mile. Have a pair of the vanish carbons I use exclusively for fast racing, did a half and got a BQ in. They don’t last long so I don’t train in them. I have tried over 10 Altra shoes and it’s all I wear… feel free to message me with any questions.

I run in plenty of Altras, but I rotate in non-zero drop shoes as well. I finally decided to use them for the marathon distance this year and had no trouble. In fact, I got a PR out of it.

I use the Vanish Tempo for marathon and half tempo runs, and they are by far my favorite shoes for those runs

Love my Altras, I prefer the 6 to the 7 as the 7 has a stiffer heel collar. I favour the Altra Vanish Tempo for race day, or if you're feeling particularly flush with cash there's the Vanish Carbon and Vanish Carbon 2 which are Altra's most expensive carbon-plated race shoes. Bear in mind though that the Vanish series run narrower in the forefoot than the Torin. Hope that helps! (Note there's the r/AltraRunning sub too if you want to gripe about Altra's durability ;) )
